ADEGA San Jose Reviews from The Last Year

We went for the final night of service on 12/31/2023 which had a special tasting menu for New Years. My husband and I really enjoy trying Michelin starred and higher end restaurants and Adega came to us through word of mouth of high recommendations. We were honestly disappointed from the moment we walked in. We were not greeted for quite a few minutes even though there was a TON of staff standing at the bar taking pictures and videos of food items for social media. Once we were greeted and sat at our table, service continued to be quite poor. It took 5 hours for us to have 10 courses - with most items taking over 30 minutes to arrive to us from when our last plate was taken. The plates were scalding hot, while the food was moderately warm - felt like the food was sitting under a warmer for too long. One of the courses was a soup and a film had been created on top of it because it sat so long before coming to us. We noticed that the tables around us were also waiting increased times and nearly every patron was on their phone trying to pass time. While the food was decent, it was underwhelming especially considering the poor service. I was truly hoping to be wowed, but instead my husband and I left disappointed after spending nearly $1,000 for the meal. I truly hope that with the closure and change of venue that the service is also reviewed. Our server apologized about the long wait time and that it took longer than the staff expected when she handed us the check even though we hadn't made a single complaint.

ADEGA really knows how to go out with a BANG with their prix fixe menu on the final night - New Year's Eve no less. The food was decadent and creative. All the courses were well spaced out and included the best octopus I've ever had - the chef's specialty. The wine pairing was creative and worth the cost with several generous pours. The service was great and I loved the NYE decorations, plus the hats, headbands and noisemakers they provided the customers to celebrate the new year. We're sorry to see it go but can't wait to try their casual restaurant that will replace ADEGA.
Depends.
...bar area is cool...service is good...food is good....but it seems they only do fixed tasting menu now

AFTER MICHELIN I heard the news in June that Adega would be closing after this year. At that time Adega lost its Michelin Star, but this restaurant was the first in San Jose to win a Michelin Star. I've never been to this restaurant. Also I never had Portuguese food. Since the owners of this restaurant also own Petiscos I wanted to eat over there first before I decide to come to eat at Adega. Since I thoroughly enjoyed my two weekend brunches at Pesticos I knew I had to come to Adega before it closes forever. When I made my reservation the two choices tasting menu were 5-course or 7-course. I decided the 7-course tasting menu. I'm glad I did because when I had dinner I overhead a server informing a customer who ordered the 5-course meal that she could only get one of the two items available for a certain dish. I came here two Thursday nights ago. Olives and bread were served as compliments to start the meal. I'm a sucker for bread, but not so much for olives as I find them to be too salty and tart. The olives at Adega were marinated in olive oil. I'm not sure if it's the olive oil, but the olives I ate at Adega weren't salty at all. I was so addicted to olives I kept on eating. Three types of bread were served. My favorite was the cheese bread with the soft, gooey texture inside. Before stating the tasting menu the first item was a compliment dish consisted of three types of sardines. The first paid item was polvo, which was roasted octopus served as a carpaccio. The octopus was delicate yet meaty in texture. The second item was lagosta. I've had bad experiences with lobster bisque with its dirty taste. The lobster bisque on the lagosta tasted clean. The texture was simlar to a pumpkin soup. The third dish was pombo, which was smoked squab. I liked the taste of this squab at Adega as it wasn't gamey but had a medium rare steak texture that melted like butter. The fourth dish was tomboril, which consisted of monkfish and monkfish liver. I've never ate monkfish liver before. I don't like liver because of the iron taste. The monkfish liver at Adega was creamy like foie gros. The fifth dish was cozido. This was for me the best dish of the night. The broth tasted like beef nilaga, which is a Filipino beef soup. With the mint wrapped around the beef terrine this dish had a refreshing taste. The heartiest dish of the night was the boi, which is oxtail with quail egg. As quail eggs are small a sign of a great chef is to not overcook them. With the quail egg served sunny side up you can see the talent of the chef. Eating the runny egg yolk with the oxtail made the dish enjoyable. There were two compliment dishes one of them was a pre-dessert that consisted of coconut rice with sorbet. The fried dough complimented well with the coconut rice. The last paid item was the dessert ovo. It was clever to have lemon mousse inside an egg structure. Prior to this dish I already had a filling meal, so it was nice to have a light dessert. Granted there were three compliment dishes for my dinner, but the seven paid dishes were filling and satisfying. I enjoyed my only dinner at Adega. Even though this restaurant will be closed forever I'm glad I dined here before the doors will close.

We had amazing service, everything came out in a timely matter! Food got better as the course went on
This was supposed to be our best and nicest meal of the
This was supposed to be our best and nicest meal of the trip, so there was a bit of hype before going to it. The interior has a nice and inviting feel to it. The meal started out well with the cheesy bread and Jamon (ordered on the side). The service was friendly but not as attentive as I would like it as we had to fill our own waters a few times. Halfway through our meal, the food got more salty to a point where none of us could finish the entree. It was a nice gesture that our server tried to fix the dish and bring it another one for us, but it was more like watering down the broth. We were told that traditionally, the dishes are on the salty side (I normally eat salty foods, but this was very salty). We ended the meal with a few dessert items, with the egg tart being really good. Overall, I expected this experience to be better, but it was good that our group got to hang out together.
I'd give it a solid B.
Overall, given the price tag, food was okay. I think for $450 id expect more better taste and flavors. Most of the dishes were bland/non memorable except the OVO (more on that in a second). All the proteins were bland, shrimp gazpacho bland, pork (in the rice dish) was too chewy and not juicy at all. Duck itself was bland (the sauce was flavorful but overall dish was ok). The desert (lemon egg tart type dish) however carried. Unique, great notes, flavor profiles, textures. So that was the only A. They didn't have the wine by glass that I'd selected either. Service was not bad (our server was sweet). But what I didn't appreciate was the tip was preset to 22% and - I thought there'd be a separate page for tip - and basically I'd get to input my own. But I guess in a rush, I just ok and there I was giving a $75 tip. Not saying that I'd tip less or more, just I'm not a fan of this "tipflation, tip entitlement" type establishments. Anyway, all in all, I support local business establishments and I'd want these guys to continue staying in business so that's why I'm giving it 3 stars. But I do feel they could either add more flavor/texture (almost like a fun spunk!) to their food to do justice to Portuguese culture OR lower their prices.

We had a fabulous tasting menu here for our wedding anniversary in August. They definitely deserved their Michelin star. The desert was possibly the best I've ever had.
