The views outside the restaurant at sunset are amazing as you can see it set just over part of the golf course - you can catch parts of the north and south courses out on the balcony. The food isn't anything necessarily spectacular but it wasn't bad either. We were there on a business dinner so the prices didn't scare us. Still, $46 for a plate of spaghetti seemed a bit excessive (no one ordered it so we couldn't try it).

Such a lovely place!I came here for dinner on Friday night and everything was perfect. This is for sure somewhere to go when you want to impress your company or celebrate a special occasion. Our server was so kind and friendly. He made great recommendations. The manager also stopped by our table and gave me an extra glass of Prosecco. Such a nice staff.I had the prime rib and mashed potatoes and they were delectable.Come here for a classy and memorable experience. There's nowhere else like it in San Diego.

Went to ARs for an anniversary dinner and had a wonderful dinner. Had an early reservation so the sun was still shining over the golf course and we really enjoyed the view. Took our own bottle of wine and the somm was great about decanting our wine and we had a great chat about wine and our favorite wine regions. Maria was our server and she was delightful and made sure everything came out right. Food was delicious across all three courses. Looking forward to our next visit!!
Be the first to ReplyWe only came here for breakfast.
Not inexpensive, but it was some of the most unique experiential breakfasts, in a beautiful dining room, overlooking the Torrey Pines Lodge's pool and golf course. Along with five star service, you're paying for all of the above. The Ancient Grain Bowl, poached eggs on ancient grains, with broccolini and fresh shiitake mushrooms was beyond heavenly. The bowl with poached eggs, spinach, and pine nuts amongst other things was exquisite. The bacon, coffee, etc also were divine. The only fail were the croissants. Hommage Bakehouse, just down the hill, blows their pastry supplier out of the water.Service was every superlative that you can come up with. Beautiful places are nice. Exceptionalism in service is so rare, these days. The staff is cast well.

Highly recommend it. My wife and I will definitely be back!

The food was excellent, but what I remember most about the evening was this incredible waitress name, Maria. I just moved to SD she made the dining experience very special. I have not once had to wait on anything she is a true gem paying attention to details without overwhelming herself with her presence. The kind of person I would want on my team that leads by example if I had a restaurant. It was my first night in SD. I would go back to the restaurant to have her service us.

Decided to have breakfast here as we were dissatisfied with the Grill. Breakfast was superb, as was the atmosphere and the service. We ordered the Lemon Ricotta pancakes and the Frittata dish. My husband and I shared both and they were both delicious and plenty of food. The pancakes were so light , very atypical for pancakes and absolutely delicious. The Frittata was packed with flavor and very hearty.

My family really enjoys eating out at higher end restaurants and without a doubt this was definitely one of the best meals we have eaten. For Father's Day i had purchased two stay & play packages at Torrey Pines golf course and when contacting to make reservations for our lodging the receptionist said "she heard AR valentien was good".Understatement of the year!Everything was so good, I almost don't want to come back because our first visit was so perfect. The staff was attentive and knowledgeable. Each course had significant variation on flavors. The cocktails were perfectly mixed. Everyone wanted to try what each other had ordered because it was so good. All of the appetizers were so phenomenal we had to ensure to order different main courses so we had less things to miss out on.Honestly can't say enough good things about this restaurant. I would give 6 stars if I could...

Maria was wonderful! Such a warm presence; she really made us feel at home! We have been to this restaurant many times, and the thing that always stands out is the service. Paul was great as well. Thank you for another great experience!
Be the first to ReplyGreat customer service.
Everybody that worked there was so accommodating and friendly! We were seated immediately when we arrived. Do note that we had a dinner reservation and did not try to walk in.We came for a birthday celebration and they had a nice "happy birthday " menu for the birthday person to use. It just says happy birthday at the top, but hey, it's a small but thoughtful detail. When ordering, the waitress who took our order was well informed and was able to answer all of our questions. I am lactose intolerant, so when I mentioned that to her, she actually told the chef and asked that my scallops be made dairy free. I was very appreciative of that. I loved their scallops, I believe it was everyone's favorite with whom I dined with. Trout, halibut, all the seafood. Even the duck confit was well done. They are a farm to table restaurant so they do source locally. I loved knowing how fresh all the ingredients were. Would come back here. 10/10
Be the first to ReplyWe celebrated our 25th anniversary last weekend.
It was amazing!! Excellent food and service with a reasonable price. We've spent a fortune for restaurants in our previous anniversaries, and these restaurants were inferior to A.R. Valentien. Even from the beginning, I felt like they seated us in the best spot in the restaurant. All the people who served us knew that we were celebrating our anniversary. "Happy 25th Anniversary!" was printed in our menu. I almost cried looking at that. The other restaurants in the past did this for a birthday, but not for an anniversary. When they brought desserts, one of the plates had the same message. They were through and through. We've traveled many countries, states, and cities, and we were never satisfied by food and service this much. We talked about it while we were there and afterwards, and I posted on Facebook to share our experience with families and friends. We are not really wealthy people, so we only tip people 20% at most for any place even when we were happy with the service, but we tipped 25% here. We will never forget this restaurant. We don't normally go back to a same restaurant to celebrate, but we might for this restaurant. Our already memorable anniversary became unforgettable. Thank you!!

Great food, amazing service, and a lovely ambience This place has it all and I would 100% come back. I came with a party of 5 for a friend's birthday and was seated immediately, as we had a reservation. The staff was super friendly and provided very good service. The food was delicious and they even gave us complimentary dishes, as well as complimentary dessert for my friend's birthday. Overall, it was a great experience and I would definitely recommend it for a nice meal on special occasions.
Be the first to ReplyI went for my 30th and the service, food, and view/ambiance
I went for my 30th and the service, food, and view/ambiance were stellar. Firstly, all of the staff wished me happy birthday throughout the night which I appreciated the attentiveness to detail. They even printed on the menu "happy 30th birthday" which I thought was sweet. Our waitress, Grace, was absolutely wonderful and had the best recommendations throughout the night. She recommended we start with the charcuterie with the chicken liver pate and it was so flavorful, yet light. Everything from the bread to the complimentary amuse bouche made for a perfect evening. For our entrees, we had the Duck Breast Gnocchi and the Rack of Lamb which were both perfectly cooked and had so much flavor. The outdoor patio overlooks the greens and the coast as the sun sets. We ended the evening with the Hazelnut Financier, as recommended by Grace, and it was the perfect end to our dining experience. It was a wonderful experience through and through for a special occasion. From the attention to detail to the service and food, I have the upmost praise.
Be the first to ReplyWe had a wonderful dining experience here.
The ravioli appetizer and ribeye entree were to die for (5/5). I believe it was one of the best ribeye's I've ever had. The rosemary biscuits are heavenly (5/5)! The shrimp appetizer (3.75) was alright, and the halibut was delicious (4/5), The service was fantastic and we also loved the old rustic feel of this place.
Be the first to ReplyBest duck I've had.
Beautiful restaurant with art to match. Views are pleseant as well.
Be the first to ReplyThe room ambiance & food quality were good.
However, the service was BAD. Things we ordered NEVER came (and WERE billed for) & things we did not order (& do not prefer to eat) were brought to our table. In order of occurrence:1) the table top cloth was pretty WET ALL OVER upon arrival & x 1.5 hours while there. So odd, so gross! Yuck! My wife thought that the undertable surface was washed prior to our sitting & I thought maybe the roof was leaking, but 30 mins into our meal we saw a young man bus boy clean & then prep the lover's booth just across from us, with him SPRAYING water from a plant mister onto the just applied new top white table cloth. I called to him after & asked him WHY he did that, with his response: "it removes wrinkles in the tablecloth." Omg, so THAT was why our tabletop cloth was VERY WET ? Come on, totally gross;2) The requested gourmet bread selection never came after our order or before or with the delivery of our yummy appetizers, so I asked a passing bus boy for it again, with it finally brought as we were finishing our apps & as the main courses were being prematurely delivered by a young man food runner;3) yep, as we were enjoying & finishing our 3 ordered apps, a young gentlemen food runner came with our 2 entrees. What? A cafeteria or taco shop? Correct, I asked for our Server, the absent "Grace", & explained to her that no one seemed to coordinating our service at all. Removing our just cooked dinners "to keep warm in the kitchen" while we finished our apps & rested a bit & chatted more seemed not best. Re-heated gourmet food? Come on. We rush-finished our apps to make way for more the next course. Not good;4) my very expensive lamb entree ($60.) was served medium-rare, not as ordered, medium-plus. Yuck. Yes, I ate the more cooked ends & asked the bus boy for a take-home box so I could cook the near raw inner meat more at home & have tonight (correct, Grace was not around then too);5) non-ordered brussel sprouts were given to us (correct, we do NOT eat them & did NOT order them) but NOT our ordered (& later billed for) $11. snap peas side dish. They never came. We just watched to see IF Grace would notice...but she did NOT. Huh. What? And she placed that ordered item on our final bill? Yep. Come on. Charging for things NOT given? A crime;6) and as above, a FALSE & OVERCHARGED final bill handed to me by Grace, with me having to later find her ("where is our Server") & tell Grace & then re-calculate the bill in my head - $11 + - tax, about $12. They charge customers for things NEVER ordered or delivered to the table?;7) yes, the gourmet restaurant dinner experience SHOULD have been what they advertise & charged for. It wasn't.

Amazing every time we come here! We love staying at the Lodge over Christmas time since it is really festive. This time we went for my birthday and it was delightful. Our server Andy was so helpful, knowledgeable and friendly! The menu changes daily. We had the scallops, duck, heart of palm and we were so impressed yet again. Will be coming back for years to come!

This review specifically goes got to the manager with glasses and slicked back black hair. He noticed that I was freezing cold on the patio so he was able to move us inside. He even offered blankets and an extra heater. Then with dinner he let us sample another Pinot Grigio which just added to our wonderful experience. Wish I remembered his name, he made my birthday dinner perfect.
Be the first to ReplyTLDR: Excellent food and service, well worth the price.
Even before you enter, the restaurant graciously offers free parking in the hotel facility, unlike other properties that charge. We had a short wait for our table in a historic lounge. We were not pleased with our two top right in the middle of server traffic, but were soon moved to a more comfortable banquette.I started with a double charcuterie plate - the chicken liver pate and the short rib terrine. The silky pate is better than your Aunt Sylvia's chopped liver, the short rib terrine was a bit more subtle and reminiscent of one I ate in rural Normandy. Daniel Boulud sometimes offers a similar one at his market in Lincoln Plaza - A.R.'s is a bit less vegetal. La Portena plumped for a sort of custard of parsnip, creamy and delicate. Every bit as good as the charcuterie. For some reason, the bread guy skipped us and we had to ask. Do not omit les pains, they are excellent. The biscuit is the best of a great lot.We moved onto the main course. I had the duck and confit leg. The duck was perfectly cooked, the breast being closer to medium than medium rare and was all the better for it. It came with a sort of spaetzle. When my wife's rack of lamb arrived, she must have given it the side eye - it was full on rare, rather than medium rare as requested. Still she accepted it. The maitre d' (Humberto?) must have spotted her expression, as he swiftly gathered it up, took it back to the kitchen for a correction, and returned with so quickly the pace of our meal was not interrupted. One of the most extraordinary, well executed, and professional gestures from FOH staff in my experience. ย She greatly enjoyed the results. Humberto ย also comped her a second glass of wine. I believe the lamb came with squash. Not realizing that each plate was enough food, I had also plumped for the beets with pistachio butter. These arrived in a portion that would have fed four. They were delicious but unnecessary. They are a little sweet and if you're a Brit you'd call them a pudding. My Negroni was spot on, and not over priced at $15. La Portena's Quintessa Illumination sauvignon blanc was a cut above the usual wine by the glass. Unfortunately, I don't have a handle on the glass of pinot noir I enjoyed with the duck.We were too full for dessert. My well made double espresso was accompanied by petit sweets, not to worry.Go here.....
Be the first to ReplyWe had a wonderful dining experience.
The setting for the restaurant is lovely. The service ย was relaxed but attentive The food was incredible. We celebrated a birthday dinner, enhanced by some special touches such as the menu printed with happy birthday wishes and a beautiful dessert. ย We started by enjoying the roasted bone marrow with salad, roasted garlic and toast points. ย The mushroom, chestnut soup was good but single dimensional. The medium rare Roman duck breast and confit leg was incredible. The caramelized sea scallops and lamb were also excellent. ย The sides of roasted beets with pistachio butter was creamy and fantastic. The Brussel sprouts were crispy and delectable with pomegranate and five spice seasoning. The bread offerings were terrific, especially the sourdough and the biscuit. Overall an excellent dinner!
