Dinner
Terrific ambience. The food could hardly be considered Greek. Chocolate and powdered sugar on Baklava? The Moussaka was unlike anything I've had at a good Greek restaurant or in Greece. Served cold didn't help.

It was a very delicious experience. You get as authentically Greek as it can get here. Definitely recommend the Chicken Gyros, it is fantastic!

We dined there last Friday. The food was mediocre and overpriced. The waiter was pleasant but had trouble with understanding English. I would have given a three star review. However, when we tried to apply a $15 credit the restaurant had sent my wife, the manager refused to accept it. After several minutes of her making excuses, I said that I would either pay the bill with the discount and tip the waiter or pay the bill without the discount and leave no tip. The manager became irate and insulting. She refused to give the discount and I paid the full bill with a credit card lining out the place for the tip and re-writing the amount of the full bill so there would be no dispute as to whether I was leaving a tip. A couple of days later, I checked my credit card account online and saw that the restaurant had fraudulently added $18 to the charge. This is completely outrageous. I have reported the restaurant to the BBB and disputed the charge with my credit card company. Iโll never return to this restaurant. If you go, I advise you check your bill carefully and pay in cash!

Music playing is very loud nightclub head banging music. Quite unsettling while trying to dine & enjoy conversation with friends. I politely asked Manager in the tight sweater and blazer, rolled up jeans and ankle boots if the music was this way all night or just a happy hour thing. The response was they love the loud nightclub vibe and that there are other restaurants to go to. Wow! Extremely unprofessional and rude. We were diners early on at the river north location and excited to share with friends so as you can imagine, this managers behavior was quite the shock.
Food that followed played into this vibe. The lamb was a thin cut and severely over cooked with no flavor, seafood orzo entree was missing cinnamon, pulled pork was completely inedible having way too much salt. One could not have more than one bite. Seafood platter also a disappointing affair. The only good here are the starter spreads. It falls into a dumpster after that. And to the manager last night, you should be fired for that kind of behavior. We will happily never return.
Rude and rushed
I am very sympathetic to restaurant owners, managers and staff who have struggled and survived Covid. This was my first return since just before the 2020 shutdown. The food was as good as I remember, but the service was rude and rushed. We barely sat down for a early reservation when we were approached by our waiter. This was good. We ordered wine. The normal service inquiries were made and we politely said we needed a few minutes to look at their on-line menu and discuss. From that point things slid downhill. In fairly short order we agreed to share 3 plates. We ordered clearly indicating that we wanted the dishes staggered. They came in quick succession and it became clear they were in a hurry to turn over tables. We were asked if we wanted plates that were half full removed. We politely and firmly expressed that we did not and felt rushed. This was after we were there only 30 mins total. This was repeated. Then we were asked if we wanted the food wrapped up and we told them we were still eating. Then before we were finished we were twice asked if we wanted dessert. The waiter and bus staff circled like vultures. It really ruined the taste and enjoyment of the food. Within an hour if arriving we paid and left. This was unacceptable behavior and definitely NOT "service." This place is off my list for this reason. I'm also sharing the experience with my friends, warning them away. I understand there is a desire to bring in $, but sadly they may get tables turned quickly by intimidating and harassing their diners, but they better be looking for a short term run.

Very good food, excellent chef, with knowledge of Greek cuisine. It is worth visiting and trying Mediterranean - Greek food.
Be the first to ReplyExceptionally good food, and a great choice for people with gluten sensitivities.
This is a great Greek restaurant. Food and service are superb. Particularly impressive were two things: 1) the grilled seafood platter. My wife and I love octopus and squid, but itโs hard to find places outside of Europe that really know how to cook it well. Ali Tavernaโs beautifully grilled octopus was right on the mark. So much flavor, and cooked perfectly so as not to make too chewy; 2) This place has many gluten-free offerings, including gluten-free pita bread. We had never seen that at a Greek restaurant before. Portions are very big, and prices are very reasonable, especially for food of this quality. People in Lincoln Park are very lucky to have this as one of their neighborhood restaurants.
Be the first to ReplyHave you tried Astakomakaronatha?
My wife and I are 80-year-old retirees who are just beginning to establish a taste for Greek cooking. And we are discovering that there are more quality Greek restaurants in the Chicago area beyond the celebrated and traditional eateries in the Greektown neighborhood on Halsted Street in the city's Near West Side. Avli has four locations and we have dined at each of them. At Avli Taverna, located at 1335 West Wrightwood Avenue in the Lincoln Park neighborhood, we decided to sample everything Greek, even if we didn't know how to pronounce the name. The waiter and the online menu provided excellent translations. A hip, comfortable restaurant, Avli Taverna is open from 4:45 to 10 Tuesday through Friday, 11 to 2 and 4:45 to 10 on Saturday and Sunday and 4:45 to 9 on Monday. We started with Avgolemono, a traditional egg-lemon soup and chicken stock and rice; Tarama, a traditional cod roe dip on pita bread; and Greek Village salad with tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, peppers, olives and feta cheese with chicken. We also sampled two small plates--Kataifi prawns, four prawns wrapped in shredded filo with pepper mayo and Soutzoukakia, smyrna-style beef and lamb meatballs with yogurt dressing and herb tomato sauce. For an entree, my wife chose whole Branzino with olive oil, oregano and lemon with Greek fries and broiled vegetables with olive oil and lemon dressing. We have loved Branzino, a tasty and meaty Mediterranean fish, since it was introduced to us in Florida a few years ago. I couldn't resist ordering a tempting creation I couldn't pronounce, Astakomakaronatha, a traditional Greek lobster spaghetti. The main element of this exquisite Greek dish is lobster meat that is coupled with a flavorful tomato-based sauce and served over pasta. Filling and delicious. For dessert, we shared two scoops of caramel Baklava ice cream with a large portion of traditional hand-stacked Baklava with nuts and honey. Viva, Avli.

We sat in the terrace. Very nice place, good food. The background music was a bit loud I couldn't hear what my friend was saying.
Our server was extremely nice and patient with us when we ordered. He is a tall guy. Sorry I forgot his name.
I recommend the place we loved it.
Love, love this place!!
This place is packed for a reason!! The service, staff and people are number one. My favorite place to eat is at the bar with Mac, the bartender taking care of everything!!!
Be the first to ReplyYou lost me at the saganaki and tzaziki
Let me start by saying the ambiance, service and staff was stellar. Thank you for that. The food was beyond tragic and the worst meal I may have ever eaten. Covid or not. I went to the opening of the Wells restaurant and it was bad but wanted to give them a chance again. I canโt believe they have a second location and I want my money back. The saganaki was cold and inedible. Itโs flaming cheese. How do you screw that up? The tzaziki was sour cream. Throw in some garlic, cucumber and olive oil and your done. Zero effort made. The gyros, chicken, and seafood dishes were not only bad but inedible. Inedible. At least one of the owners of this place is Greek! You should be embarrassed for yourself. Send your chef to Greek Islands so he learns what Greek food should taste like or even down division st for a gyros. Reach out to give our group a full refund. Iโm waiting.

Be the first to ReplyFabulous Greek food
Our family recently had dinner here again, and we're very impressed with both the food and the service which was impeccable. The chef really knows how to prepare authentic Greek food. The ingredients are fresh and well seasoned. The seafood platter was outstanding. An excellent selection of Greek wines and craft Greek beers is available. There is an extended outdoor patio for dinning. We felt like we were back in Greece.
