absolutely loved this place !! food was great, and staff super nice with really made our day, everyone enjoyed it
Be the first to ReplyLovely food, ok service, expensive drinks
Food was excellent, service was just about OK. What was least enjoyable was the payment system being set up to encourage diners to leave a tip on top of the already generous 12.5% service charge that is added to the bill by default. That, in my book, is trying to rip customers off, and it reflects very poorly on Bala Baya's management/owners.
Be the first to ReplyCramped seating but good food.
Sat in the first floor- just, all tables were taken. Seating area very cramped and tables had to be moved to allow to be seated on the bench.chairs were wooden and uncomfortable. Had the Mezze aubergine mess- good but small. Mezze beef with hummus - good but small. Fire and heat was 3 piece of pitta with small chilli and tomatoes dip- ok. Fish cloud basically a fish croquette heavy and average. The brunch Malabi was similar to a deconstructed panna cotta with cherries- again small and overpriced. Service was ok. Ambience- too busy, Didn’t like the cramped seating- to close to the next table and felt claustrophobic!

From the moment we entered, we were made to feel welcome by the warm and friendly staff. Our waitress explained clearly how everything worked and gave some great recommendations. We had the brunch feast and everything was delicious, especially the mezze and homemade pittas. The midnight malai dessert was an absolute taste explosion!! I look forward to returning to try the dinner menu!

Simply incredible food! I was dining alone which always feels a bit odd but the staff were so great and even though busy really made me feel welcome! I had the sweet butter hummus which was simply one of the best things I’ve ever eaten in my life. I followed this with aubergine mess and the brisket donut…both absolutely divine. For dessert I had the malabi and a glass of lavender, blackberry and dill gazoz. Every single thing that crossed my lips made me want to cry it was so good. I spend a lot of time in Tel Aviv and Bala Baya is the closest I’ve got to that Tel Aviv feeling in the UK. I can’t wait to go back!
Be the first to Replyeverything was average, I left disappointed
Atmosphere was pleasant however the food let this so called haven down and I wouldn't recommend it. I adore Israeli middle eastern food, however this was a very unfortunate experience due to the food lacking the flavours one would expect. Maybe Ill try it for breakfast one day!.
Be the first to ReplyBusy atmosphere but average food
Uninspiring food… starters weren’t too bad although fairly small portions - lunchtime mains weren’t particularly tasty.. felt like mostly pre-prepared basic items made to look a bit more appetising by putting a poached egg on top .. ie not much cooking involved just assembly. Won’t be going back anytime soon

Had the brunch feast menu and was really good. The selection of meze was tasty and came with their homemade pitta which was excellent. The lamb shakshuka had depth and flavour which went well with the pitta too. The salmon shawarma was a little bit of a let down with salty salmon. The trio of desserts was soo good especially the one with sesame crumb. Service was a little slow to start with us waiting a log time just for water but overall will be back.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Food, Lively Atmosphere
We were a party of five, were greeted and treated very pleasantly from the moment we entered. We tried a selection of the smaller and bigger dishes. I loved the Fish & Fennel, a whole sea bass grilled with well, fennel... Not for the fish-shy, and not cheap at £42, but truly outstanding with very satisfying and complex flavours. The cauliflower steak was very good too, as were all the other dishes we had. I had a glass of red wine called Jezreel Castel, a blend of Syrah, Argaman and Cabarnet, very full-bodied and fruity. We finished with fresh mint tea. I recommend Bala Baya warmly, and will defo be back.

The food here is absolutely amazing. Friendly service, comparatively quiet location just over ten minutes walk from London Bridge. Good drinks menu too with interesting wines and lovely cocktails. I definitely recommend it. I do find the each dish coming out when it’s ready a bit awkward, as because of dietary restrictions my friend and I didn’t share plates as recommended. To be fair, we didn’t ask if the timing could be changed. I felt a bit guilty eating my two plates while she waited for hers! The delicious food made me forget my guilt fairly quickly though!

Everything was absolutely delicious. Can’t recommend Bala Baya highly enough. Friendly service. We will definitely be returning.
Be the first to ReplyExpensive and very disappointing
Nice ambience and very friendly and helpful staff. Went with two friends and we ordered the 'sharing menu'. It was mostly vegetarian, just one meat dish (minced beef) and one fish dish and very disappointing. At £58 each we thought it overpriced for what it was. We had in addition 2 glasses of wine, two cokes and a soda. I was expecting a bill of £200, but with VAT and service charge it was over £237- outrageous for a mostly vegertarian meal. More expensive than some of the best restaurants in Mayfair, but this was Southwark!
Be the first to ReplyDelicious but super slow
Had a wonderful meal here with my colleagues. Beautiful venue, we got to sit inside but with the big patio doors open. Very nice and relaxing. All of the food was top quality and very filling, but it was extremely slow. For a business meal it wasn’t ideal as it made us very late for our next appointment. But overall we loved it and I’d certainly return when not under time pressure.

The food was really really excellent. Inventive dishes (ever had a prawn baklava?!) with substance to match the style. I was really Impressed and will definitely return.

Can’t recommend this place enough, food was delicious and the staff super friendly. We loved everything about it 😊

The best experience ever. The restaurant is lively and truly has an amazing atmosphere. All the waiters have big smiles on their faces, and the food is simply delicious. Definitely, definitely will come back here!
Be the first to ReplyPerfect for sharing
Delicious food and friendly staff. We shared the hummus, aubergine, cauliflower, dumplings and chicken - all so good! Will come again
Be the first to ReplyAuthentic Israeli cuisine
Beautiful service and excellent food. The wine choice is really nice and truly Israeli. Perhaps one of the nicest Israeli restaurants outside Israel.

We booked here at short notice. A little hard to find under the arches off Union Street but well worth it. Lovely decor, really good atmosphere in the evening, friendly staff and delicious food. We ordered 5 dishes between two of us which was just about right. Roasted cauliflower was the best.
Be the first to ReplyEverything wonderfully superb
From the moment we walked in everything was superb.. the welcome, the fun, the ambience... and then.. the food! The food was awesome... cauliflower and cabbage dishes just sublime... New tastes, great flavours. There was something on the menu for everyone. Our waiter was so knowledgeable about ingredients... went out of his way to make sure our 'gluten free ' friend was equally catered for. Can't wait to go back... thank you.

Finally managed to visit after the third attempt to book (every other time it was fully booked) and totally worth the wait!
Had an amazing experience with a friend, delicious food (Ottolenghi on steroids!), great atmosphere and excellent service (thank you for bearing with dietary requirements so wonderfully, be knowledgable of all the ingredients and providing alternatives and additions for no extra charge).
I’ve noticed a few comments here re prices but you simply cannot expect quality ingredients and fair wages for all employees for less than £60pp, even less so in zone 1!
Will definitely be back soon!
Good food and good staff
Lovely restaurant. Staff were certainly friendly. We had the.taster menu which was definitely worth £47 including a drink.
Never had food from Tel aviv before. Definitely worth a try.
Very good restaurant
Overall, a very good meal in a very atmosphere with good service. However, none of the elements were top notch. Two dishes arrived within minutes of ordering, even before we have received our drinks. Then a large gap before the next dishes arrived.
The food was ranging from excellent (Aubergine Mess) to odd (Venison Shank). Some of the dishes were inspired, but the Venison Shank did not fit in as it was served with gravy on a rösti with a small herbal salad.
Given the location in an arch, the acoustics are not great. We were seated upstairs and it seems that their open kitchen downstairs lead to our clothes smelling of cooking after our visit.
To summarise, similar to ROVI or NOPI, but not as refined.
Memorable family birthday evening meal
Thank you for a memorable evening celebrating my wife's birthday with family. The food was excellent. Most of all really appreciated the care and attention taken by Michael with regard to food allergies by some members of the group. The advice was detailed and the ability of the kitchen to adjust dishes where they could be was appreciated. Would definitely recommend Bala Baya and will plan to return soon. Andrew G.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Middle Eastern food
We went here for a special occasion and were delighted with the food on offer. We got through our first plates so quickly you could tell we were amazed. The aubergine dish was terrific in particular. Small plates came out very quickly and the waiters were very relaxed and friendly. Price was a little high given the relatively small portions (we had to order an extra dish to fill us up).
In general though, highly recommended for meze style food in London! Can’t wait to try other dishes next time.
