Wow. Such a cute place, it definitely gave me New York vibes but in the heart of London I felt so spoiled coming here. The service was super friendly and outgoing. They had live music playing which is always a nice touch and really decent deals like champagne and oysters for a decent price. We ordered a variety of plates the the dressed crab was absolutely amazing, and I'm really not a huge fan of pancakes but they were so delicate and flavorful topped with fresh jammu fruit it was the most perfect bite I've had in a while for breakfast. I would recommend this place for anyone looking to treat themselves for a a good time.
Be the first to ReplyOne of my worst experiences dining out in London lately.
We booked a table for four at 7pm on 10th February. We arrived on time, said hello to the host, and asked for our table. She told us it wasn't ready, to which I replied it was fine and that I would wait. I waited outside, but since the doors were mostly glass, I kept looking at the host (who also saw me) to see if she would call us. After 10 minutes, I entered and asked if our table was ready, to which she replied, "Yes, but you disappeared." I explained that I was outside looking at her, to which she responded, "Since you were outside, I didn't think you wanted the table." I ignored her rudeness and another lady took us to our table. For starters, we ordered oysters, onion soup, wine, and snails, which were all good. Then for mains, we ordered risotto, steak, salmon, and chicken. I asked for my steak to be cooked medium-rare, but when it arrived, it was completely cooked. My friend's food was good. I called our table waiter and asked if she would mind to please replace the steak. She called the manager, who came to my table and asked me what was wrong with the steak. I told him, and then he asked me to show him the steak to prove it wasn't cooked the way I requested. Unbelievable. After seeing the steak, he apologised and agreed with me, and took it away to be replaced. The new steak was perfect. The waiter was so nice -- and probably embarrassed -- that she even gave me a new set of fries because she thought the others were cold.As soon as I finished my steak, the waiter brought the bill and said, "I'm sorry," without even asking if we wanted it. But apparently, we needed to leave the table at 9pm. Considering the host didn't call us for our table and I had to wait for another steak, this was the rudest thing they could've done.We paid, and they didn't even take the steak off the bill or offer any compensation for the experience. I went to speak with the host, but she was not only arrogant but dismissive and blamed me again for the experience. She offered to call the manager, but I wasn't going to continue this ridiculous conversation. I just wanted an honest apology and an invitation to come again with a promise that my experience would be better. But no, she decided to be unpleasant and nasty.Someone like her shouldn't be working in a place like this. As someone who visits Balthazar New York weekly, this was, without a doubt, an experience that will make me never go to Balthazar London again. I hope the management rethinks the kind of person they have greeting and taking care of their customers, as well as the way they ask their clients to "prove" they are right about their food.

Extraordinary food and service, and ideal ambience for Covent Garden dining. This was our fourth visit, and our waitress Olga was a superb guide to the menu, and ensured that our evening was perfect.
Be the first to ReplyThe endive was good.
The sole (French fish and chips) and chicken were good -- better than the Baltazar in NYC. The chicken was a bit dry, but the mushroom cream sauce made up for it. The sauce was very good as was the tartar sauce for the fish. Service was good, as were the Manhattan and gin fizz. Lunch for two with drinks and tip was 92 pounds.

Extremely rude wait staff rushing us to order the entire time. Then when my friend came and joined us in the booth they told us we couldn't have 3 people. Overpriced and over rated.
Be the first to ReplyService is everything.
I guess someone forgot tonight.Friendliness is so important.

Food is ok, portion is not great but the rose is pretty good. Service is horrible and we waited for so long to order. Feels to me they prioritize anyone before our table and when we try to get their attention again, they acted annoyed. The table next to us got champagne and looks like they have far better service than us.
Be the first to ReplyWe had two great meals at Balthazar/Covent Garden.
The waiter were attentive, and we selected Jersey oysters which were some of the best we've ever eaten anywhere in the world. The restaurant is nicely elegant and we did decide to come back for a second meal, which was also quite good. I want to thank the team at Jo Malone's on King Street for their recommendation.
Be the first to ReplyThis was truly the worst meal I have had in a long time.
The salad came out with the entree when we asked fir it first. The steak looked like it came from a bargain bin and was painted with liquid smoke. The frites were very ordinary. I was so bitterly disappointed because Balthazar in NYC is a fave. The one star is fir the French Onion soup that was delicious.
Be the first to ReplyOn our recent trip to London, we found that almost all
On our recent trip to London, we found that almost all restaurants had a 90 minute limit on dining to accommodate other guests. Understood. That said, we had reservations & ordered our wine, appetizers and mains. A couple on one side of us came in 10-15 minutes later, no appetizers and were served their main dish and out the door before our main came. The couple on the other side of us had their appetizer and were brought the dessert menu before they even had their main course! We waited approximately 30 minutes to get our main course. We were just finishing our meal when we were told that our 90 minutes was up and we had to leave! We explained that we had waited 30 minutes for our food - this was not our fault! The couple still seated to one side of us had been there when we arrived, admitted they were walk-ins and were not asked to leave after 90 minutes. What a disaster. Especially because this had been a place we liked to go in London and had celebrated family occasions here. They continued to make the matter worse by offering us free dessert! We repeatedly told them we did not want dessert and they continued to offer it! BTW - we would have had to stay LONGER to eat our dessert! Staff running all over the place and no one seemed to be in charge. My husband and I have both been in hospitality and were amazed at how this restaurant was run! We won't be back and you know what - they won't even care. Hope it doesn't happen to YOU. Avoid this place.
Be the first to ReplyYummy veal rib-eye.
The pan friend sea bass was also great (although quite filling). Lovely Christmas cocktails and vibes
Be the first to ReplyLovely evening, not planned at all on a Saturday evening.
We didn't have a booking but managed to get 2 seats at the bar. Service was fantastic ! And so was the food would definitely recommend! 2nd time here as I tried afternoon Tea here years ago, which was also very nice!

I had an awful experience because of an extremely rude and unprofessional manager who yelled at me when I complained about the service and then refused to give me his name! I have not been able to get in touch with anyone at the restaurant because he would not provide me with an email address and was adamant that he did not have to share his name with me. I have never experienced such appalling rude behaviour by a "manager" in my entire life and will never set foot in Balthazar again!

This is my first Balthazar restaurant that I had event been to. ( I have also visited their New York location since). As a native Londoner, I've always enjoyed the varied options that London has for foreign cuisine...especially French. The cafe bistro style of French restaurant has always been a favorite of mine. I'll start it with the service...it's traditionally French. I'll leave it at that! (Abrupt and to the point wait staff in a fast paced restaurant). Besides that, the food is quick, correct and the wait staff are easily able to accommodate and knowledgeable on the menu. The food and drinks selection is great- all of a high standard. I've had mainly beef based dishes, steak frites, the burger, bad steak tar tar. All of which were exceptional, as is the clod fish bar too! The only downside/thing to watch out for? You're dining in tight quarters and it's always slammed. So if it was a quiet, sit down meal you were expecting, I would look else where. We were fully aware and expecting this so it was a great experience.Overall, an excellent place to dine in an awesome part of London!

My favorite go-to spot in London when I'm feeling indecisive. I love the garlic shrimp and pea shoot salad. The ambience is identical to the one in NY - although this has a second floor and may be a tad bigger - I cannot tell...

It's loud and crowded and you may get stuck in the melee that is the front room but the service and food will make up for it all. Balthazar serves up a great brunch. I had the eggs florentine which were perfect. Loads of spinach to make you feel virtuous and two poached eggs with runny yolks. It's one of the best versions of this dish that I have had. It's a little loud but that's part of the fun. Come and pretend you are back in New York!
Be the first to ReplyA bustling restaurant perfect for an afternoon lunch
A bustling restaurant perfect for an afternoon lunch meeting. I've only ever ordered the chicken paillard as it's a personal favorite, but the afternoon ambiance is a major draw as well. It's a busy, happening spot, but not overbearingly loud as some other places in the area tend to be. Highly recommend!
Be the first to ReplyThe food here was decent at best.
The waitstaff was pretty...mediocre. The most unimpressive restaurant we went to in London. We had reservations and tried to seat us in the middle of the restaurant despite it being virtually empty. We asked to move to a booth and they were pretty rude about it. The food, again, was decent. When we finished we were pretty ready to go. The bill took forever to arrive to us. I wouldn't come back here. Maybe the one in New York is nicer?

Walked to this restaurant at about 2pm and the decor on the outside was beautiful. It caught my eye. Not sure if this is what it looks like all the time since I went during the holidays! We only had to wait about 5 mins before sitting down. I honestly wasn't too hungry, so I got the garlic prawns. It was very very nice. It wasn't too salty and I enjoyed dipping the bread in the sauce. On the other hand, my boyfriend ordered the English breakfast and the egg was overcooked and the bread was hard as a brick...

preamble: This review is dinner for two at 7pm on a Monday night. I have been enamored by all things Balthazar for years. I'm the guy who has tried almost every recipe (except for Plateau ds Fruits de Mer, who makes that at home?) and read everything about Keith McNally and Robert Reid. This was the first night of a week-long foodie trip to London. My wife and I planned this trip to be able to eat our way through the Balthazar breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner menus. It pains me to say, we did not return. With that out of the way, as you can tell, we were not that enamored by Balthazar Covent Gardens. bar: We stopped at the bar for a Cosmo and a Manhattan before heading to our table. The head bartender was too engrossed in an in-depth conversation with another customer to help us, but one of the other bartenders eventually stepped in. Both of his drinks were amazing; beautifully executed. Later at the table, my wife's glass of Chateauneuf de Pape was good, but not £26 good. service: We made reservations online and Amy(?) called to confirm 24 hours prior. Let me laud and praise the maître d' and the entire host staff. They were exceptional! We asked for a booth and they graciously accommodated us with a perfect table. Once seated, Kuwar was our waitstaff. He was professional. Even though the restaurant was not busy, the service felt rushed. Perhaps Balthazar runs on one speed, whether busy or not?food: My wife had the kale salad and steak frites. The menu only offers a kale salad or a beetroot salad. The kale salad was well-executed but unmemorable. The entrecôte was cooked perfectly but - even for an entrecôte - not that great of a steak. The less we speak of the fries, the better. Perhaps we should have substituted potatoes dauphinoise, but then it most certainly would not have been steak frites. I had escargot and steak tartare. Prior images on Yelp show escargot in shells; my escargot were served on a snail plate. They were OK. The tartare was fantastic. Very high quality and amazing flavor. details: The space is classic upscale brasserie. By that, I mean absolutely beautiful. If you decide to go, I suggest making reservations.
