Baroo Los Angeles Reviews from The Last Year
This place is a dream.
A single tasting menu keeps it simple, but every bite was heaven. The nonalcoholic pairing is hand-crafted kombucha, and I think it's even better than booze because of its uniqueness. The starter snacks are amazing: a small bowl of squash soup topped with a seedy, puffy crisp and a mochi-like bread base with crispy edges with the most memorable chewy texture. A single seared Scallop is spectacular, the Ssam is a beautiful spread of leaves encasing a wedge of sole with the crispiest skin. There's a melt-in-your-mouth black Cod, with a lightly pickled radish and crispy fried green papaya, and the Pork Collar is impossibly tender, in a savory red jjigae sauce. The show-stealer is the creamy dollop of white kimchi. A small supplement gets you Beef Short Rib instead of pork, and it is the tenderest you'll ever eat. A delicious dish but not as creative as the rest of the menu. With these meaty mains, you get the best rice bowl in the world. Every grain of rice is dotted with bits of aromatic mountain greens. A pickled paste of perilla leaves with lotus and sunchoke are fragrant from fermentation and a dollop of XO sauce brings on a fishy umani that makes every other flavor explode. This may be the best thing I've EVER eaten. Dessert is a melon panna cotta on one side, a smooth ice cream on the other. The topping is a bitter sorrel bingsu that almost mimics matcha. Wow, this is amazing. Forget all the Michelins, Baroo just might be my new favorite (and BEST!) restaurant in LA.
This is one of the best restaurants in LA right now.
Food and flavors are creative and original. Service is welcoming and relaxed. I would go before it gets hard to get reservations. Went here for a special occasion and was glad we decided to go!

Decided to try Baroo out as my friend raved about how good it was! Baroo offers a decent-sized tasting menu that is a modern twist on Korean food. I appreciated the creativity a lot! Really enjoyed the Hokkaido scallop and the Soy-Braised Wild Black Cod. And you must take the upgrade to the Brandt Beef Short Rib, it is absolutely delectable! I will note that if you're expecting to be super full after this meal, this isn't the place for you. Service is pretty good here. They took their time to explain every dish to you, as I would expect from a place with a tasting menu. They also cleaned off every dish promptly and made sure you had the right utensils for each course. Good attention to detail. Ambience is alright. It's in the Arts District in one of those brick buildings, so it had a rustic feel to it. Only thing I would quibble about is that the tables were spaced pretty closely together, but they have a pretty small space so it is what it is. Overall, I really liked Baroo. And not just myself, as they already got Michelin recognition even though they have been open for less than a year. Perhaps a prelude to them getting a star in the next Michelin Guide?
Absolutely stunning experience.
From start to finish - it was curated with the utmost thought and care. We can't wait to return.
BOO BAROO.
We spent over $1000 there last night for five people including friends from Amsterdam, one of whom was a chef who owns a popular restaurant w Bib Gourmand Michelin rating. We were there because our chef friend wanted to try it and we were all excited for the preset courses. Take it as a bad sign that the first thing I'm doing while still lying in bed this morning is writing this review because I cannot get over what a disappointment it was. This is the first time I've ever given a bad review. Not one thing stood out on the menu is particularly good, or even good. Maybe the dessert. That's it. A few things to know before you go. The Space. It's industrial modern with high ceilings and sound travels badly. It's hard to hear the people at your table but you can hear every fork and dish around the restaurant and in the kitchen. This made it hard to hear our server, which leads me to. THE SERVICE. At Dish One, the soft spoken yet stern server explained the first dish to us with a lot of words in a monotone, it was some pumpkin cappuccino thing that's like one bite of a creamy pudding type dish and you are supposed to use a special wooden spoon and crumble in these crispy seeded things on the side. I asked one question and this mean school marm server says woth consternation --"LIKE I SAID.... " And proceeds to - I guess repeat herself..?-- in an aggravated tone that i still could not hear. But that set the tone for our "Fun" evening. Of course no one dared ask a question about anything else after that. And it would have been nice to be able to since the menu is intentionally obtuse with buddhist "cycle of life" names that don't really tell you anything about the food you are eating. The other server, a guy, was nicer but not great. He stumbled, didn't really seem to know all that much about the food he was explaining, had no stand-out personal skills, seemed like a new server at a third rate restaurant like Houstons or something. (Meanwhile an hour earlier we had all literally hugged goodbye our server who served us cocktails on the rooftop of The Proper hotel - Nicole- she was smiling and kind, charged my phone at the bar, gave us recommendations, we felt welcomed, even I dare say-loved. Go there!!) which leads me to - The Drinks. Stinking soju. Not clear on the "cocktail" menu that the $16 Negroni is not actual alcohol. I guess they don't have a liquor license beyond wine and beer. I would have ordered a beer had I realized that. Cloudy rice water pretending to be a Negroni felt like a misrepresentation. This review autocorrected me to capitalize Negroni for a reason. Words have meanings. But the wine was not much better. Two of us got the wine pairing menu for $65 - nothing was great. No one told us anything about the wine. Unless we didn't hear them. Who was going to ask after the LIKE I SAID witch shut us down when explaining the first course. The Food. I have no idea what we ate. I literally do not remember. Something was pork. It was forgettable. No flavor packed a punch. We've had much better food there past few dsys at lowkey spots. HOLBOX where we had lunch was incredible and not expensive- so memorable I want to go back today. I would have paid Baroo prices for HOLBOX and would not pay Holbox prices for Baroo. Also Malibu Farms was delicious on the beach and much better value than Baroo. LIKE I SAID -- BOO BAROO Edited to add- I remembered some of what we had. The scallop was overcooked. I could have used a knife to cut it. The cod was flaky and cooked perfectly. The pork was okay. I did like the pumpkin cappuccino starter. And the dessert was unique and pretty delicious.

We had the pleasure of indulging in Baroo Los Angeles' Korean tasting menu priced at $110 per person, complemented by Korean sool pairings. Each course of the tasting menu was a masterpiece, carefully curated to showcase the depth and complexity of Korean flavors. We opted for the "왕 -- 旺 -- WANG " dish , which presented a choice between peads & barnett pork collar with goulash jjigae, baek kimchi, and ssam, or brandt beef short rib with burdock jus, baek kimchi, and ssam. For my main course, I savored the delectable pork collar, served with a rich goulash jjigae, tangy baek kimchi, and the perfect accompaniment of ssam. Equally impressive was my partner's choice of the brandt beef short rib, elevated by a velvety burdock jus, alongside the refreshing baek kimchi and ssam. Each dish presented was not only visually stunning but also a delightful explosion of flavors. The menu's theme left a lasting impression with its gorgeous presentation and incredible flavors. The setting was relaxed yet warm, creating the perfect ambiance for a culinary adventure.
Very good omakase in a beautiful space in the arts district.
I'm in between 4 and 5 stars. Only reason I'm not giving 5 is the service and presentation (how dishes are delivered, not the food) was okay and more like a traditional restaurant and really nothing special. Some of the dishes were just dropped off with no real explanation to the dish and even how to eat it properly. Either way food is great and innovative, worth a try!
Overall a 4/5: Food 5/5 Great tasting menu.
Every dish was fantastic! Got the upgrade to beef ribs, it was the one of the best of the entire menu. Service 5/5 Portion Size 2/5: Went hungry and wasn't full at the end of the meal. Had to go for tacos after. If you're expecting korean bbq kinda food, this is not your place. Worth trying but do note weekend reservations are gone pretty quickly so book in advance. They've only been open for 3-4 months so the menu hasn't changed yet, but I heard it will soon so I will definitely come again.

Baroo was one of three restaurants I booked as part of a weekend extravaganza to celebrate my husband's 55th birthday. Not every dish was entirely successful but Baroo surprised us in ways that a restaurant hasn't in awhile and for that reason, it was our favorite of the three places we dined at. We loved the combination of flavors, the beautiful presentation, the introduction of some ingredients we weren't familiar with, and how the courses progressively told a story. At $110/pp for the tasting menu, it is an incredible value. With all the Korean restaurants in LA, I'm surprised there aren't more modern takes on fine Korean cuisine. Baroo fills that hole and does it admirably. We're looking forward to seeing how the restaurant evolves.

I had a wonderful experience here! Service was great, food was fresh, beautifully presented, and the atmosphere was cozy. I love that the kitchen isn't closed off completely and you can see that they are working back there. My favorite drink was the banana milk punch. Perfectly balanced. I can drink that every day if I could afford it . Every dish was so well balanced between taste and texture. I will note that the owners had their child there. He was adorable. Adorable in the sense that they let him be him at an upscale restaurant. It reminded me of my cousins who's parents owned restaurants it they were always kept in the back or manning the cash register or doing homework if they were ever in the presence of customers. This child made noises and the staff did their best to keep him calm - but he's a kid. Not sure what he got worked up over but I enjoyed the fact that they didn't scowl at him. He went around and showed the customers his artwork on a banana. And when the staff saw he might have been bothering one table, they quickly scooted him elsewhere. Well done all around to this family and the staff.

Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
