[Highly variable] pp (mains range from ~$30 to whatever you are willing to spend) This is a nicer meal. I found it through Michelin and Tripadvisor as a top rated steak house. As a frequent consumer of steak, I can say without a doubt that Bavette's has earned it's Michelin rating as a top Chicago steak house. From a service perspective, there were a few subtle halmarks of their excellent service style: my favourite being that the server went out of their way (or so I thought) of learning my name and addressing me by it at every interaction (having been to three star Michelin restaurants, I have never experienced this before... including at nice restaurants where I was relatively "regular"). Turns out he did this with everyone. I'm embarrassed to say I can't reciprocate. I want to say my waiter's name was "Joe". There is an old adage that American's ask their waiters (especially on the west coast) what do they aspire to be (often expecting the answer to be "actor") where as French waiters will lift their noses in disgust at the question (they've achieved their personal pinanacles). I felt like that probably would have applied here. As for the food, I would say it is the unhealthy (sarcastically) best of both worlds situations: American portions with French quality. I ordered the gargantuan shrimp cocktail expecting three, maybe four shrimp only to recieve seven or eight (I lost count). I think I would have struggled with this even if my wife was with me. As a result, I was (further) embarrased to say I was unable to finish my Chicago cut ribeye (... I've NEVER not finished a steak). Good thing I "settled" on the button mushrooms and didn't opt for the loaded baked potatoe (which would have resulted in a complete gastrometric disaster on my part). For drinks, the night started with an Elijah Craig Old Fashioned, where the barman's artful preparation resulted in an especially aromatic orange citrus flavor. I paired the steak with a mid-range cab sauv (Turner if I'm not mistaken) and ended the night with a calvados VSOP. The night was mildly celebratory (and the bill reflected it) but it was worth every penny and I was not disappointed by the Michelin/Tripadvisor recommendations.
