Berenjak Borough London Reviews from The Last Year
A real Iranian chef and a more thorogh Michelin inspector would have known better❣️
I am blessed with being born and bread in Teheran 12 years before the revolution to parents who loved cooking and preparing feast for their family. I remember as a child sitting in the kitchen looking at my father sitting on the floor, marinating the lamb and the judje (baby chicken) 3 days before the friday feast. The meat melted literally in our months. My aunt was famous for her Ghormeh Sabzi and I know that she spent hours in the kitchen stirring into the pot with the perfekt mixture of fenugreek, cliantro, chive and parsley. I decided to visit Berenjak under my visit in London. It is not every day that a persian restaurant gets a Bib Gourmand and I have already eaten in Kateh before they got theirs. Visiting a more down to earth “Kebabi” sounded refreshing. The place itself is quite a surprise, it looks like a hole in the wall from outside, but as you come in, you get quite overwehlmed with all the pictures of Iran at the wall and the persian Musik. The style and music continues even in the bathrooms 😌. The menu is different compared to other persian restaurants, they have integrated humus in persian cuisine and with offering chicken wings, Jigar and balal bring Barbecue and street feel good food under the same roof. Unfortunately as it comes to the quality of the food and sitting arrangements can Berenjak not holding the expectations. If you do not sit at the high chairs around the barbecue area, you donot get the atmosphere at all. The staff were not persian and didnot know anything about the persian cuisine. The jukes kebab was couloirs yellow but didnot smell or taste of Safran and was not tender enough. The Jigar was definitely overcooked. The Lavash bread was for away from the original in Iran, which is as thin as paper. The Torshi was far away from being enough fermented. Worst of all which I choose to call a crime was “ Kababi’s (= Barbecue place) unforgivable attempt to offer “Khoresh”, which is a homemade speciality. I cannot imagine that there was a real Iranian Chef or waiter who knows the recipe and the secret of a good Ghormeh Sabzi in the kitchen the day we visited the place. No real Iranian chef with respect for himself would have send this tasteless mishmash of far too many mexican beans, old mutton and some not authorised herbs ( apparently mint and Tarragon 🤦🏻 ♀️) out of his kitchen❣️ That would be a suicide ! I appreciate that the restaurant chef took the dish out of our bill, but such a dish cannot come on a menu in a bib gourmand restaurant unless it is made by a real chef who has the know how . A khoresh is not a quick fix. If you ask me it is a barbecue neither, but there are so many bad barbecue restaurant around the world that one can get away with it❣️ Please show more respect for the cuisine of our country and if you are experimenting at least change the name of the dish of your imagination to avoid misunderstanding and disappointment . The costumer is the king ❣️ Thank you for Kask E by the way . It was very small but delish ❣️ and may be so come back to have a feast and a balal one day 😌
Second time in a year, really good food but nothing special
Second time in a year, really good food but nothing special for a Michelin star restaurant. Had to book a few weeks before, hasn't changed much except for the new dessert that has soft serve included. They could do better with the kitchen staff wearing gloves and hair nets to be honest
Food is amazing.
We went with course menus and it was delicious. Service also is great. Highly recommend to book in advance since the place is always busy. Location next to the market makes it very trendy and cool. For sure next trip we visit this restaurant again.
Assembly line restaurant
First impressions - every available centimetre of space is used to seat diners, mercilessly tight. Our seating was facing a wall, and our glasses did not fit underneath the overhanging cabinets.....the servers squeezing between the diners could not avoid bumping into them constantly. The menu had limited choices, further reduced by half of the mains being for multiple diners only. No coffees available. Cooking was competent, service was quick and friendly. Portions were small. Atmosphere was lively and friendly.
My favorite dinner while traveling in London (2023).
We opted for the tasting menu and chose the chicken and lamb kababs and enjoyed all of the different mezze options immensely. Trying the tasting menu let us explore options we might not have otherwise ordered. A meal I'll wish I could relive
Awful place! Poor Service ! Never again!
We booked this restaurant as we thought ton have a nice meal in a Persian restaurant! Although we booked this long before they gave us counterfeit chairs ! these chairs has no back rest and you arrive they offer you these seats just next to the heat of the kitchen oven the other side if the top work! No where to hang your jackets or leave your bag ! Then I checked there were empty tables upstairs! they did not offer us until I said we will leave and they asked us to wait 10 min so the table be ready! Upstairs they had a few empty tables but I guess they know no one likes to sit on counterfeit chairs but many might not say or complain so keep proper table and chairs for in case they get a few coming from street! The kitchen close at 3 pm and our booking was 14.30 so why not offering empty tables? anyway they charge you 15% for service too as well as you should check the prices as they put it wrong then when you complain they fix it. food is not enough I ordered Mirza( aubergine salad) they brought like 2 spoon Mirza Ghasemi for 8£ totally ridiculous ! And it should have had eggs in it that was missing. the koobide was like plastic couldn't cut it easily but chicken was ok. The bread was the only think I really liked and for that I give them 2 stars.
One of a kind
Exceptional food, romantic and wholesome atmosphere. The restaurant Is Just outside borough market and It s walking distance from London bridge station . We booked a table on the counter as when i try and book It was the only tablet available . However as soon as we got there we got offered to move upstairs on actual table and that had defently and impact on the night as upstairs It s a Little bit more spacious. First thing : i was so impressed by the lights . The care for details and the amount of staff on the walls make you feel like you re somewhere else. The music Is loud enough to create a nice vibe but not enough to cover your voice and for my standards that s allready a great thing. Second thing : The food. Incredible. Me and my girlfriend are both vegeterian and we didnt go out disappointed. The dishes we had were some of the tastiest food we ever tired and we were blown away . We also asked for the pour of the week and got offered a very delicate, fruity Red wine which made us both Happy. The service was quick enough and kind. A note for the meat eaters. The meat dishes are considerebly more expensive then the veggie options and that Is something to keep an eye on because our bill was very reasonable for what we ate but i m not sure It would have been the same if we are meat . That said considering how great the veggies dishes were i can t Imagine the meat to be not worth the price. The Place itself Is tiny so if you love a lot of space the Place Is probably not for you. If you re kind of Person the like dim lights and magic vibes you got to the right place
Iranian must food
This restaurant is a must when I visit London and specially the branch at the Borough Market. We were served by Mahmoud whom helped us to get the usual order/dishes. This restaurant has the most delicious Iranian food in the town..I guess the Chef must be a PRO cuz when ever I visited ghis spot..the food quality is always the same. We enquired about the take away service and it was available so we made sure we don't leave any tasty food waste. I recomed you go eith the set menue so you have a state of everything.
Tasty food - slightly over priced for what it is
Went here for a group Christmas lunch - and the food is tasty but have to agree with other posters when they say it's over priced for what it is. The dips and meat are very good quality - the poussin and lamb was exceptionally good quality. Ate of the "£45" set menu - but the tastier mains are supplements so it was actually a £70 set menu. Wine list could have also been better. Would I return? Yes probably
Absolutely amazing! I showed up at 5:15 on a Monday night
Absolutely amazing! I showed up at 5:15 on a Monday night and lined up. They opened at 5:30 and they sat folks who had reservations and then I got a seat at the bar which was a great experience seeing all the action. I was immediately packed but organized. I ordered Persian white cocktail which was meh but then the food immediately caught up. I ordered kashk e bademjoon which was great and Olivier salad. I got a taftoon bread which they bake there fresh and you can watch them baking the bread. I ordered the lamb/ barreh for my entree that was also perfect. I ordered too much but also shared with the person sitting next to me at the bar. Keep it up Berenjak. I'll come back.
I could eat here daily and I'd never get bored.
The hummus!!! I mean all of it's just so so good. The staff are always beyond accommodating with dietary requirements. My husband & I live in New York City but are from England & Egypt and every time we come back to London this is our first stop. It's almost become a bit of a ritual. James the manager is so wonderful and always remembers us. Can't recommend this place enough
I really wanted to like this place.
Pricing was kind of ridiculous for the quality. The kebab was not tender & very elastic, and the service was almost nonexistent. They forgot to bring out a few things that we ordered and ended up having to cancel them. Didn't understand the hype at all, unfortunately disappointed.
