Finally got to check off this place right before they ended
Finally got to check off this place right before they ended on their journey. It's my first time to have Russian food, I've had some variation of pelmeni and borscht at a friend's home, but never had it professionally made, let alone a modernized take on Russian cuisine. I was hoping to try their tasting menu, just so I can get a bit of their best dishes, unfortunately that was not available on their last day. I went and tried their borscht, beef cheeks, duck fat potatoes, and donut with caramel and Siberian sturgeon caviar. I was hoping to try their horseradish martini, but some of their ingredients were gone by the last day. I ordered their Princess Anastasia instead, which featured their strawberry-rose infused vodka. Basically tried to create a tasting menu for myself. My favorite has to be their potatoes. They were thinly sliced and cooked with wild mushrooms, then served with sour cream and fresh dill. Something about their sour cream being very airy made it a great combo to the rich potatoes. Beef cheeks were extremely tender and flavorful. The presentation was a bit unexpected with these crispy sticks as branches, looking like a nest around the wrapped cheek. The borscht was very rich due to its wagyu broth, but I found the texture a bit more watery. It was also served with a dollop of sour cream on the side. After seeing the sour cream in the soup in Google images, I gave that a go, it helped thicken the soup a bit, but it's still too much broth for what it's worth. Lastly, that donut was so simple yet so exquisite. I usually do not like caramel at all, found the stickiness too bothersome and it usually leaves a weird filmy aftertaste in the back of my throat. I didn't have that feeling with this one. I'm not so sure about the pairing with caviar. The caviar was great alone. I had thought to eat it all together, similar to the sweet and savory combo of chicken and waffles. Bad idea! It had brought out the fishiness of the caviar and did not pair well. It's great to have it separately though! The Princess Anastasia cocktail had a beautiful coral color, you can't taste any alcohol but I definitely felt it. While the ingredients list made it sound like extremely sweet, the natural flavors and sweetness of the infused vodka made it like a juice over a cube of ice than anything else. While I had enjoyed most of my meal, the service was not consistent. I see some reviews mentioned the server would spend time to explain each dish, mine had not. While I was still working on the soup, they've brought my main dish out. Food was just presented to me with their title, nothing else. How should I approach certain dishes, that part doesn't seem to exist. While the food was great, service is still an important part for a restaurant to win awards. After speaking with the manager, it seems like they were short staffed for the last day. Well, not like my complaint would do anything, it was their last day of business. Either way, I'm glad I've come to experience the meal.

Well worth an Uber ride to this joint! Exquisite food and delicious drinks. The service was professional, informative and impressive.

Tried Sunday Brunch--menu is excellent, coffee delicious but cup burned my fingers (no handle), einkorn crepe is served chilled (meh), petit rye w/smetana butter (not my favorite). On the other hand, the Buckwheat bowl was exquisite, and the Birch & Rye breakfast was outstanding (duroc bacon & duck fat potatoes do not disappoint). Pleasing interior design & wonderful service.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent.
My husband and I both chose the vegan tasting menu. We very much appreciated the vegan option. The dishes were beautiful. Our absolute favorite was the Crispy Zrazi! The host was lovely. The service seemed a bit chaotic in the beginning, but improved as the evening went on. Looking forward to trying another vegan tasting (or more crispy zrazi!) in the future.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent presentation of traditional Russian cuisine.
High quality ingredients and special care in preparation of authentic traditional recipes based on wholesome foods and fermentation. Beautiful presentation and a very creative menu !

Maรฎtre D was very friendly but our waitress was either new, lost or ambivalent. She disappeared for ages while tables around us were getting sometimes two attentive servers. Apologies were being offered elsewhere for delays in food arrival and complimentary snacks were offered to others but our table seemed ignored. Drinks were very good, mushroom noodles were good but duck was dry and they ran out of lamb at 7pm on a Friday. Beautiful decor and I understand it's highly rated but our experience did not warrant the high prices.

My husband and I went on a date for the first time in long time to Birch and Rye. It was such an amazing experience we both had! The food was exquisite, and the service we were given was exceptional. Everyone was lovely and professional. They even explained in much detail about the food that was made and what it was made of, as well as the wine that was accompanied along with each meal. I would love to come back again !!

It is very pleasant and very satisfying to arrive at a place where they serve you with that professionalism with which the staff of this beautiful restaurant treat you and I mention this because I have had the opportunity to go to different four or five star restaurants but they serve you in a normal but here they serve you in a very professional manner, educated and very knowledgeable about everything, offering you every detail of each meal as well as the knowledge of each wine that they give you every detail.. it is impressive, I am impressed.. I thank each of the staff who works in that special place, its owner who is a very very nice, humanitarian and very charismatic professional person.. my wife and I were impressed BIRCH &RYE

This place is not just Russian food - it is an incredible sampling of Russian, Ukrainian, and Uzbek food updated for a sophisticated San Francisco palate. So good! I am Ukrainian and my father was born in Uzbekistan so the food was familiar and also surprising. If you've never had great food from these countries, or if you've only had the more traditional versions of these cuisines, I highly recommend visiting Birch & Rye.

Without overstating my frustration, I have never witnessed such poor service and disappointing food in San Francisco. Six people, each with their own starter and main, all agreed that their food was bland and uninteresting. For russian food Cinderellas bakery is magnitudes ahead at a third of the price

Pros: The decor is beautiful, and there is a nice back patio. The presentation of the food is lovely. The infused vodkas are fun. It is unusual to have Russian food, so they get points for originality. Location, on a quiet block in Noe Valley, is lovely. Cons: The service was very poor. We entered the restaurant at 7:30pm and did not receive our entrees until around 9:00pm. We were at the restaurant for almost 2 hours, and all we had ordered was a round of drinks, an appetizer, and our mains. It was shocking how long we were waiting for our food. We think they simply forgot about our table. because other diners that arrived at the same time or after as us paid and left before we even got our entrees. No one ever checked with us on how the meal was. No one ever came by our table at all after we placed our order for over an hour. It was really the worse service I've ever experienced. The food was overall mostly bland and not worth the high price. I understand mistakes can happen. If the server had just acknowledged it and had apologized and offered to comp our entrees or something like that, we would have been fine with that. But there was never so much as an apology for the wait. When we finally flagged someone down to mention we never got our food, we did receive a complimentary vodkas (which we did not actually want or imbibe, given it was getting late and we both had early mornings and we had already had a round of drinks). That said, I will probably try it again someday, just to see if it was a one-off, since it is close to home.
Be the first to ReplyA really wonderful and unique restaurant, traditional
A really wonderful and unique restaurant, traditional Russian food with an upscale twist. Every dish was thoughtfully prepared and delicious. We started with a caviar flight, which is hard to mess up but the restaurant nailed the details with the blini and the pearl caviar spoons. We moved on to the house made pickles and and rasstegai, both excellent. I know it's odd to hype up pickles too much but they were phenomenal, with each veggie having its own brine. Then I had black cod, and my wife had vegetarian stroganoff. Cod was good, but the stroganoff stole the show, very hearty and tasty. Then the rye donuts with caramel sauce and caviar for desert might have been star of the whole meal, I could eat them every day. On top of all that, the service was great, and they have a very cool cocktail and wine list. A little too pricey (for us at least) for this to be a regular meal but I'll definitely be coming back in the future.
Be the first to Replywe had a very nice dinner at Birch and Rye.
The team was professional and well trained and the food was tasty and well presented. my friend and I experienced both chef's tasting and vegan menus
Be the first to ReplyEating at Birch and Rye was one of the top dining
Eating at Birch and Rye was one of the top dining experiences I've ever had. My girlfriend and I shared the tasting menu, a caviar flight, and dessert. Chef Anya brought out our caviar flight, our fabregรจ egg, and took the time to teach us about the Russian and Georgian influence behind these dishes. It was clear how passionate she is and how much TLC she put into each dish. The food was amazing, as you would expect a James Beard nominee to be, but Chef Anya's kindness and humility in describing how much she cared about her plates and her restaurant was the experience that set this night apart for me. Go here before this place gets too popular to get a seat.
Be the first to ReplyWent with the infused vodka flight - most of the selection
Went with the infused vodka flight - most of the selection was pretty strong and reminded me of just vodka. The pine infused vodka was unique and apparent. Tried the tasting menu which a nice selection of their popular items. The perlovka was an extremely flavorful broth served with mushrooms - of which the texture was a bit off for me. The monk liver pate was balanced with the caviar. The dumpling soup was good, the squid ink pelmini was beautiful but was more of a garnish than anything else. Went with the cod as my main which was perfectly cooked Lastly the donuts with caramel...I mean you can't really go wrong with donuts and these were no exception. Overall, a unique creation of dishes, very creative and def outside of the box for me. Great to try and least once.
Be the first to ReplyI have been meaning to leave a review since my first visit.
Oh boy, they did not disappoint at any level. Visited them back in December with friends out of town, their stellar service and knowledge on the wine selections, presentations of the food, and stories and insparations behind each single dish was memory I will never forget. I came back for the Vegan menu this time and I couldn't believe it. I joked I've decided to become a vegan if Chef Anya keeps surprising me like this. We had same server as the last time (Asian lady with beautiful smile and knowledgeable about the menu). Planning my next visit in spring when the new menu is ready! Thank you everyone at Birch and Rye!

What a marvelous food and dining experience! We eat and cook very well at home, and when we go out we cherish food and preparation that we'd never think to cook at home and, even if we did, would be a galaxy or two beyond our imaginations and abilities, not to mention our pantry. I had the tasting menu and wine pairing and am so happy I did so. Some dishes were elegant simplicity and some were complex dishes that nevertheless came together into a unified flavor pop of "Wow!" We also greatly appreciated the flexibility and willingness to accommodate special requests, such as pulling an item or two from the vegan tasting menu and serving them as part of my partner's a la carte selections. Staff and service were also impeccable, and in particular the estimable Josephine. We can't wait to bring friends with us next time!

Wow what an incredible experience! Chef Anya is incredibly talented and has such amazing passion for her food. I was so impressed with how much she focuses on the feeling that her food creates. The service was outstanding as well. The food and the environment were incredible as well. I will be back for sure!
Be the first to ReplyWaited for 40 minutes even with a reservation.
Worst customer service ever and the food is not even good! Way overpriced! Had a reservation at 8:30pm, got there at 8:26 and we didn't get seated until 9:17pm. They also got my order wrong and the servers had an attitude. 1/5 stars. There are way better restaurants (for the price) where you can get better service.

I've eaten at Birch & Rye twice and each time has been spectacular. The service is unparalleled and the in-depth knowledge not only of the food but the Georgian wine that we had was exceptional. Who knew Georgia had such fabulous wine?!?The first time I went I had the beef stroganoff and it was divine. The egg noodles were silky and the sauce so rich and balanced. The second time I went it was equally delicious, however just a touch more acidulous. Turns out they turned the dish vegan with mushrooms and I while having no idea, enjoyed just as much!I do miss that khachapuri was not on the menu the second time and the first it was very tiny compared to what I've had at Bevri in Palo Alto, which serves a larger portion. Who doesn't love bread, cheese, egg & butter?Birch & Rye is a must and was nominated for a James Beard best new restaurant 2022. Go, you will have a fabulous experience and enjoy an uncommon cuisine worth experiencing.
Be the first to ReplyI got to try out this place at a WCK fundraiser for Ukraine.
I really loved the ambience of this places, serene, calming and classy. Chef Anya has a big heart - she is always exploring new ways to do recipes - and when the time calls for it, she also uses her privilege as a well trained and well connected executive chef to perform her role as a global citizen. Chef Anya is amazing! Your honey cake is delish and I will come back to order this dessert again and again.
Be the first to ReplyWhat a wonderful expression of elevated Russian favorites.
If you go expect the unexpected! ย The inside was very comfortable and not noisy at all! This place is a gem and I am sure they will continue to advance known Russian food favorites.

We enjoyed dinner ย Friday night at this new elite restaurant. There are so many positive things to say about it. They greet you with a smile and very warm atmosphere and the ambiance is spectacular. We had already paid for the tasting menu but could not resist having some caviar from their great selection. They also offered several infused vodkas and we enjoyed two of them immensely. Their food was very fine and inventive, on the level of Atelier Crenn. The flavors were exceptional for every course and the presentation was very beautiful. This was my first introduction to Russian cuisine so I did not know what to expect but was definitely amazed at the quality and flavors that I was introduced to. I can recommend this special restaurant to anyone who enjoys fine dining and is wiilling to pay for it as they automatically add a 24% charge to cover health benefits for their staff. This was a spectacular meal that my wife and I will remember for a long time.
Be the first to ReplyBirch and Rye has easily become my favorite place.
Growing up I ate a lot of Russian food so before coming to I wasn't sure what to expect according to the reviews. After dining there however, I can clearly see the only reason for bad reviews is because people are expecting russian food to be colloquial and cheap which is often the case. This is definitely not what it's evoking since this is on par with other michelin star restaurants I've been to in San Francisco. If anything I think it was on the cheaper end of the spectrum. So if you don't want to pay the price for a good quality experience, then I suggest cooking at home.Good restaurant these days want to take care of their staff so I'm more than happy to contribute- especially after th pandemic.Anyways....I went with a big party so we tried most of the things on the menu. The highlights were definitely the Pilemi, duck mousse, stroganoff, and salmon with rye bread. The cocktails were amazing as well.Thank you for such a lovely experience!
Be the first to ReplyWas invited to the Birch & Rye by a friend.
Was told it was Russian food, so this would be my first time eating the cuisine. After a friendly greeting, we were seated at comfortable and cozy table for the four of us. It was immediately apparent that the staff was very knowledgeable about the experience we were about to embark upon. We started with cocktails from there fine selection of spirits and wine. The house made infused vodkas were the obvious choice. For the meal, we started with some caviar. Seemed like the right thing to do and it was, In a word, wonderful . Not being a caviar aficionado, I was delighted. ย We moved on to the newly introduced tasting menu with wine pairings. Not knowing the menu, thought it best to let the chef make the decision on what is best from the kitchen and the bar. Good choice! Got to taste a number of things I was unfamiliar with. All of the items were superb. Portion of food and wine were generous. Often when eating a prifix menu, portions are small. Not the case here. Plenty of wine to accompany the delicious bites as well. Not only was the food prepared to perfection, all of the baked goods/breads were baked in house. The way it's supposed to be. Even though we were pretty much full, we decided we were on a roll and had the doughnuts for dessert. Like all of the baked goods, freshly made, in house. All in all, exceeded my expectations given I didn't really know what I was getting into. We will be going back. Just one last note, given what is going on in our world. This is a Russian restaurant in American. Need I say more??If your looking for a taste experience like no other, stop in, you won't be disappointed!!Did I mention the staff is wonderful? I think I did but it's worth repeating!
