Class. Top Quality Ingredients, expertly executed. Wonderful winelist and service.
We ate at the restaurant. It's a special place. Full of history and heritage. Perfectly executed, top-quality steak and chips. Magnificent, reasonably priced wine-list including a good range of mature vintages. Will stay over next time as the rooms also sound splendid.

Fabulous lunch venue, easy access, wonderful food and lovely staff. What's not to like? Also, not forgetting the best house red wine I've ever experienced.

What can I say once again The Champany didn’t disappoint us! From start to finish the food was sublime (no other words) I can honestly say hand on heart this was the finest meal I have ever had the pleasure of eating. The Chateaubriand just melted in our mouths, absolutely exquisite. Thank you for making our 28th wedding anniversary meal one to remember. Always love coming here and love the warmth of the staff and owner x

Friendly staff bit early accommodating food was excellent had fantastic chrimbo venison burger chips are quite unique then a subtle not too heavy Christmas pudding lovely
Be the first to ReplyPerfect place for a lazy lunch with family and friends!
Staff are friendly and welcoming and offer great service, food is of very high quality….would recommend the venison burger with Brie and cranberry, delicious! Couldn’t manage a pudding but others enjoyed the apple crumble which looked fab and apparently tasted delicious too. Restaurant is really cosy with loads of interesting features, will definitely be back soon. Thank you!

We've been to the Chop&Ale (scruff part of this establishment) many times and thoroughly enjoyed the meals there. As a result of Covid(?) this closed down and the only option is to go to the main restaurant 😐 the food was ok, the service poor. When the food arrived it was plonked down without asking if we wanted anything else. Which we did i.e. Vinegar for the chips. It was almost impossible to get anyone's attention to request this, resulting in one of the guests shrieking 'excuse me'....No one checked to see if the meal was OK or if we wanted something else. At that price thats the least you expect...
Be the first to ReplyBirthday meal.
Went to champneys on Sunday, we had been given a lovely voucher for a birthday. Hadn't been in some time. First impressions, not good, very scruffy outside, weed's everywhere, chipped paintwork. When we got in, I said to a gentleman we had a reservation for 3.30, he looked at his list, turned, walked away, apparently we were just to follow him! Not a word spoken. Pate, undecided on if it's bought or made, bland, tasteless. Burgers came, both raw in the middle, horrible. Second burgers arrived, obviously cooked quickly, charred, burnt and horrible smell and taste. Extremely overpriced poor quality food, and you are eating in near dark, small candle on the table, impossible to see. Avoid.

We had a lovely experience for a family birthday. Service was excellent and my 6 year old nephew couldn’t have been treated better (compared with some other reviews about kids). Food was all delicious, we had a mix of steaks, burgers and the beetroot tart tatin then for dessert the crumble, cheese board and the most delicious rice pudding. 1 bottle of fizz, 1 bottle of wine, 2 glasses of wine and a few soft drinks, the bill came to £277 which we thought was very reasonable.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day at the Champany was first class. Two grandchildren aged 5 and 7 loved the food - and the service. Ambience and setting unique. Steak so tasty. A credit to all involved.

Went to the champany Inn on Sunday and it was superb. We visited 3 years ago and due to civil haven't made it back since. The chop and ale House was closed so we dined in the restaurant. Lovely setting. To start hubby had prawn cocktail which was a generous portion and I had the Pate, both lovely. Hubby had bone in ribeye which was superb, cooked over charcoal which was incredible. I had the champany burger which was great. Food amazing quality. A bit surprised it was so quiet on a Sunday and no music so not the best atmosphere Also recommend the waitresses outfits are modernised. Overall lovely meal
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, great atmosphere
Had business dinner here and it was special. The food, the wine, the service and the atmosphere/decor were all wonderful. The owner still helps out with service and she runs a great and enthusiastic crew. We had a special request for haggis, nipps and tatties so that for those of us who had never experienced it could take part in this unique Scottish dish. Its not a menu item so must call in advance to arrange. I must say I'm a convert as it was delicious. The haggis was nicely presented to us in the stomach before it was taken away to plate. We all went for steaks and I've had many over the world and must say this was world class steak perfectly cooked to our individual tastes. The house wine was also very nice and affordable. Of course they have an extensive wine list catering to all budgets. Will definitely try to go again when in the area.

Excellent restaurant, friendly staff and wonderful food. I was really happy with my meal, the atmosphere and the service. I’ll definitely return. We got burgers which were cooked perfectly.
Be the first to ReplySimply put "fantastic"
My wife and I treated our uncle to a birthday meal this evening. Shown to our table immediately in a nice relaxing environment. Drinks came first, for various reasons we all had soft drinks. We were put under no rush to order unlike chain restaurants and anything regarding the menu we asked about was answered properly and concisely. Three starters came, pâté, soup and black pudding, all excellent. Decent time between courses to make some room and chat. The main event... The mains were the chicken dish, fish dish and I had the ribeye from the butchers block, I asked for this to be cooked as recommended by the chef, medium rare, cooked to perfection. Only two of us managed deserts and enjoyed every bit of the cheesecake and the creamed rice. Let's sum it up, Environment, service, food quality, staff, price and experience first class. Visiting the Champany is an experience and a privilege, is it for everyone...no, some people prefer the real buzz and crowd noise with fast food, I can enjoy that also but once in a while its a great change enjoying this type of service. Let me finish off by commending all the staff who served us and all the ones in the background who go unseen but are equally important, at the point of leaving the restaurant even the boss herself was chasing us down to thank us for the custom. We will be back. Thank you very much to all at The Champany for a wonderful evening. Have a Merry Christmas
Be the first to ReplyI shouldn’t have worried !!!
I’ve been coming to Champany for years. Once you come you will always come back but people rarely spread the word as it’s a jealously guarded secret. During COVID they merged the Chop House and Restaurant and reduced the menu, as did many places to survive. I went last night and it was MAGNIFICENT. Ok the menu changed and was reduced but I had the best ChateauBriand ever … the chef was a wizard. Almost burnt outside but pink inside. Beautifully done. (My normal haunt is Hawksmoor … this is better … sorry Air Street London) On the back of the menu was a small wine list … they used to have a huge book of wine and when I asked it appeared again !!!! Wonderful. A bottle of Pinot Grigio for the wife and for me an American gem called Duelling Pistols …. Perfect. The waitresses were all liveried in their old school frilly aprons, the ambiance was there as well with candle lit dining. If I was being picky the 2 steak dressing were a bit bland (Peppercorn and Bernaise) but everything else was great. So glad to see it is still amazing and the lady of the house is still at the helm (40 years now?) guiding your dining choices and making sure everyone had a good time. I imagine it won’t be long before they open up the chop house again. I will definitely be coming back and maybe stay over this time. Thoroughly recommended if you’ve never been … treat yourself so some old school hospitality and not being a process one of hundreds.

Be the first to ReplyTerrible experience
AVOID AVOID AVOID/ Absolute terrible customer service , woman who I presume owns the place has a terrible attitude. NOT child friendly wot so ever , my 2 year old was good as gold , had a iPhone with his cartoons on and immediately was told to turn it down (it wasn't loud) and because he had 1 outburst at the end of were meal , the old lady leaned down to him and Toled him he would have to leave if he kept making noise because she had other paying customers, actually couldn't believe it , two other people who were dining across from us couldn't believe wot she said either , she gives off utter horrible vibes . Stakes are completely black and all you taste is charcoal/ burnt, cost £323 for 4 of us , better getting steak and cooking it at home would off been far better, at least you could taste it because the steaks here are completely burnt , charcoaled beyong utter belief, (that's the way they cook them apparently) the full place needs a re vamp , no lights , candles instead haha it's a utter joke of a place go to MIller & carter is honestly a 100 times better than this , Owner needs to learn respect for paying customers

Champany used to be my go to for all things from celebrations to business. Now it’s only average. As much as it pains me to write this I have to be honest. Also, toilets are very tired and frankly not very clean. I could pick the food apart but I won’t. Overall as I say , it was average

Continues to excel I have reviewed this unique restaurant before and can only compliment it. Dinner on the 28th was once again first class. Steaks perfectly cooked to order. Service as always was very attentive. Great consistency. A credit to all

Invested in new steak Knives which made a huge difference, not a place to visit if you are watching your wallet. Really liked it the house wine most pleasant, smoked salmon from their smokery superb and subtle, and adored the highland cheeses and wow the big bottle of port I could have taken home. The steak platter we shared, and the staff were most accommodating and didn't mind whatsoever the bit we couldn't eat to take home with us.

We’ve now been to The Champany twice recently and cannot fault the food or staff. First time it was just the two of us and enjoyed it so much we returned with the rest of our family. They also thoroughly enjoyed it and said they would return. The piri piri king prawns are delicious, the steaks were done to perfection and the chips are the best ever 😋. The actual restaurant is lovely and the staff are very helpful and pleasant. We will certainly be back for another visit. Highly recommended.
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced, underwhelmed
We didn’t have a reservation so walked in and were put next to the front door where no one else was. There was no music or ambience, food overpriced (£6.75+ for a couple of pieces of carrots each, a few green beans and 3 pieces of broccoli). I don’t mind paying high prices for good quality food but it was actually underwhelming. Dad ordered a steak medium rare and it was tough to get into - and more medium. He said it’s was flavoursome though. Sauces were absolutely delicious and the chips were some of the best I’ve ever had! My beetroot tart as a veggie option was delicately flavoured but on the sweet side and again, at about £17 alone with no sides, I didn’t think that was of value. What was really disappointing though, was when I went exploring to find the toilets and discovered a wonderful dining room overlooking the garden where other customers were sat in candle light and there were plenty of empty tables, yet we were stuck by the front door on our own?! A friend of mine happened to walk in and said she has been before and loved it. We both talked about it again post-visit and I shared my experience and she said it wasn’t as good either. Won’t be back and I can’t recommend it. Had we been treated the same as other guests that decision might have been turned around, as it’s as much about the ambience and experience in a place like that just as much as the food itself. But it’s a no from me.
