Chez Black Positano Reviews
Overrated
Overrated and overpriced tourist trap, easily the worst food I ate on my trip to Italy and would recommend anywhere else in Positano.
We always have the best time
We go back to Chez Black every year and we are always treated like family!! The experience is always literal perfection! I love how Mr. Black is always sitting at his table during lunch and always greets us with a smile, year after year!!
SALTY PIZZA & EVEN SALTIER STAFF! So rude!
DO NOT EAT HERE! This experience ruined our time in Positano! The waiters were rude and pompous. As it was super warm we weren’t too hungry but knew we needed to eat so we decided to get a pizza to share. We’d looked around and the pizzas were quite large so we knew this would be enough. Our pizza arrived in the shape of a heart. At first we thought cute, but then we realised it was half the size of everyone else’s. We had 3 small pieces each. It was €18 for a Margherita so we felt very mugged off. When trying this it was so so so salty. honestly a disgusting pizza. Once finished we sat waiting for our bill while everyone around us was leaving and being attended to. We were completely ignored by all the staff and as the restaurant was clearing out no one was coming in our direction anymore. No one even asked if we wanted another drink, dessert, nothing. Finally we grabbed a waiter after trying for 20mins. They would make eye contact look like they were coming over and then go talk to their colleagues. He said of course then just didn’t do anything. We waited 15 more mins for the waiter from our section to stop chatting to his colleagues and actually sort the bill. The price was outrageous and the coperto very high. It was disappointing to see everyone get better treatment than us.
Tasty food
A beautiful culinary experience, we had the most amazing dishes full of unique flavors. Love the food and the ambiance is priceless.
Must visit in Positano!
Chez Black has an amazing history and story. It’s right on the Positano main beach. It’s vibey. It’s chic. It’s special! Food and ambiance are great! Make a point to visit if you can!
Magical
Magical to dine in a location from the book “One Italian Summer” Delicious food! Service was great and the View was AMAZING
I must say the location was great and it's a very romantic
I must say the location was great and it's a very romantic setting. However I was not too impressed with the food. I had high hopes for the octopus but it was very chewy ... worst part is they didn't even provide a sharp knife. I had to use a butter knife to cut it which felt like a work out. By the time I finished they gave me a sharp knife... oh well! Otherwise the gnocchi was great! Spaghetti and pesto... terrible. Definitely much better options close by if you're looking for some better quality food.
Very good for a tourist restaurant I'm recommend The fish
Very good for a tourist restaurant I'm recommend The fish is fresh , the restaurant is beautiful , the staff is very organized
Cute place, but total tourist trap!
Pros: This is an adorable little beach restaurant that feels like a movie set. Cons: Sneaky hidden costs? My daughter and I were walking up the boardwalk after we had already eaten pizza at another place when we saw Chez Black and were wanting a salad after days of carb-loading, as one does in Italy. We ordered two salads (8 + 10 euros) that were not dressed, still water, and a mocktail (13 euros), which ended up being just a glass of juice with mostly ice. The bill came to 47 euros?!?! Tax should have been 10%. The server flashed me the receipt (all in Italian obviously) and I naively tapped my card. So we paid $75 CAD for two bowls of salad and a glass of juice. We got totally taken advantage of. I would NOT recommend, unless you like wasting your money. The whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth.
Salvatore Russo “ what would he think”
Walked in without booking, they sat us at the front of the restaurant in the bright sunshine and we asked to be moved to the air con area but just didn’t quite make it, it seems if you are draped in Gucci you are shown to the air con area with no hesitation. Food was nice, table service good , cost €140 for a pizza, couple of plain salads, 2 Coke Zero’s , 1 bottle of water and a bowl of strawberries.
Meh generic at best.
I saw them take the whole fish that were on display and THROW them like they were nothing into a big plastic bin arguably to put out the next day. Pasta wasn't anything special. Eggplant parm was okay- cocktails good. All in all i would go back
Cooler then cool - & don't forget to snap a shot! I
Cooler then cool - & don't forget to snap a shot! I checked this off of my bucket list and it did not disappoint the spaghetti zucchini the second to none. The ambience and service was pure perfection. Beyond dinner with a view!
Heard good things but was very disappointed with service
Heard good things but was very disappointed with service and food. Ordered the lobster pasta and was very underwhelming.
Ah, the Amalfi Coast -- Enter this once-glorious,
Ah, the Amalfi Coast -- Enter this once-glorious, now-glorified cafeteria, coasting on a 75-year-old reputation and the Instagram dreams of unsuspecting tourists. I made the mistake of ordering a green salad. For €8, I was presented with what can only be described as an elegant bowl of shredded disappointment -- iceberg lettuce. Just iceberg lettuce. No tomato, no cucumber, no dressing. Not even a rogue crouton. It looked like something salvaged from the back of a Furr's Cafeteria in 1996, minus the charm and the neon Jell-O. The rest of the menu reads like a love letter to mediocrity, with pasta dishes that taste like they were prepped by someone who heard of garlic once and seafood so uninspired it could only have been grilled with resentment. Yes, the view is stunning -- which is probably how they get away with charging double for half the effort. But don't be fooled by the linen tablecloths and the old photos of celebrities on the wall. This place is less "classic Amalfi elegance" and more "cruise ship buffet in disguise."
Chez Black is one of my favorite spots in Positano!
Chez Black is one of my favorite spots in Positano! Perfectly located right across the beach, with great food, a lively atmosphere, and the best people-watching. We ordered grilled fresh shrimps , bocconcini mozzarella di bufala & grilled octopus , everything was excellent and you can really taste the sea !!! A must-visit every time I'm in town and don't forget to tell them Flavia sent you!
The ambience was nice, but incredibly touristic.
I enjoyed the dish I got. The prices were definitely high for the quality of the food. The arugula and tomato salad was refreshing, but I wouldn't eat here again. The service was great. I wouldn't suggest this for anyone looking for a quick eat on a larger budget. Otherwise, it is very expensive.
I kept seeing this place as a must go to when in Positano
I kept seeing this place as a must go to when in Positano so I made a reservation. We came on a Monday around 7 PM and it wasn't that busy yet. We ordered a pizza and the prawn pasta which was pretty tasty. The food was great but I will say it wasn't the best food I had while in Italy. I think you're paying for the location which is nice since it's right on the beach, perfect for people watching.

We decided to have lunch there because it was fully reserved for dinner. The restaurant is beautiful, but honestly nothing stood out. I didn't get the hype.
I've been visiting Positano for 40 years and have been to
I've been visiting Positano for 40 years and have been to Chex Black 25 times. I am sad to say they have just gotten sooooo lazy with their cuisine it breaks my heart. Flavorless pizza dough, tastes like canned tomato sauce, just a shame. Also had the lemon pasta which was served 40 seconds after we ordered. Of course it was premade and tasted as such. I mean that's the ONE thing you can't screw up in Positano - lemon pasta. Fried calamari came straight from red lobster - not the delicate hand battered calamari you can buy virtually anywhere. The owner wanders around our front flirting for most of the day. Perhaps he should flirt in the kitchen. Try Tre Sorelle instead. It's exactly what you hope for.
Tourist Trap
Food was ok. Saw quite a bit about it on social media. Not very synthetic. Tomato and Arugula salad almost inedible, overly peppery. Overpriced for quality of food
Great Nautical Theme & Amazing Meñu
Loved the theme of this resto. Just like the interior of an old ship. The seafoods we ordered were all fresh ( fried calamari, mussels in tomato soup & grilled lobster) Leandro our server was friendly & very effiicient. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Visually and Gastronomically Pleasing
Simply amazing, Yuri was our waiter and he was very good. The food was outstanding, and we will return. My only regret was not having more days in Positano to try different dishes at the legendary Chez Black🖤
Worst Italian food I’ve ever had.
Do not waste your money here. Sure it’s on the beach and might have history (??) but it’s so bad. Service was rude and terrible (were made to feel like we were doing the waiters a huge favour just being in their presence. Food (pasta) was just awful and waaaaay overpriced.I ordered a boring spaghetti and meat balls - it came with 2 small meatballs only - it was €45 ! / they could even throw me an extra meatball !! Lucky they just made it to the plural for the meatballs otherwise I would have grounds for false advertising!! I get it’s on the water in Positano so it’s not going to be cheap and cheerful - but the meal was so poor it was disgraceful. There are so many other good places in Positano - seriously I wish I had of gotten a tip like this before we went there - please dont waste your money dining here. Look around there is other pma es that you will enjoy - (think it’s the worst Italian I e ever had !)
Terrible
Chez Black was recommended to us, unfortunately it was underwhelming on many levels. The service, we waited 15 mins after sitting down. The food was disappointing and given what we got overpriced.
Delicious little French seafood themed place
I got a very distinct French seafood food vibe from this place and it is located right at the beach. Looks like the inside of a ship and they have the coolest dishes and flatworms. So cool that they sell it should you want to take a souvenir home. We ate there only once and I wish we’d gone more so we could try more dishes.
The bread is stale and not very good.
Worst bread I've had in Italy. Food was average overall. Pasta was ok. Service was poor.
Heart shaped pizza!! Even though it was not the best pizza
Heart shaped pizza!! Even though it was not the best pizza i've ever had, the heart shape made all the difference. Located right on the water, this place is a great stop for lunch. Outside of the beautiful heart shaped pizza, the mussels were pretty good. They were okay in size but tasted yummy!
AMAZING!
Absolutely delicious meal. Pasta and Pizza were amazing. You have to visit. Wait staff were so lovely, especially Roman!!

Came here with no reservation which was nice being that most restaurants in Positano require one. It has an amazing view and amazing service but the food was very mediocre.

Stay away- Tourist Trap I choose this place due to recommendations in advance. However, they lacked the luster of their prior notability. Just sad. They lost my reservations and had to show my reservation on my phone to get on the list. Then we still had to wait a while. The guy at the front was very busy and he told me he was an owner. He needs some lessons in being kind and helpful. The food was bland and way overpriced. Only the eggplant parmigiana was worthy of eating. The rest tasted liked canned spaghetti. The cocktails were watered down versions of what you could get elsewhere. The service was very poor. When you wanted something, you had to make contact several times and maybe they would help. I am so disappointed in this experience.
Pricey but good food! Average service.
Relaxing location on the water. I recommend this restaurant
Seated immediately with no reservation.
Very good service. Food came in good timing and was quite good. A bit pricy but it was tasty. Not great enough to be 5 stars but still good. Nice ambience right by the beach.
This doesn't matter because location is king but our server
This doesn't matter because location is king but our server was an asshole. I suppose he wasn't pleased with our pizza order so he scoffed and purposely brought out only one dish. 75 Euro for two cocktails a water, a pizza, and a 40 minute late salad.
I don't know who is giving this place all the 4 and 5 star
I don't know who is giving this place all the 4 and 5 star reviews? This was the worst meal I had in Italy. Totally over rated. The only reason I gave it 2 stars was for the location and the nice girl who seated us, despite the crowd. Everything else was awful; from the tacky, low end decor, to the attitude from the wait staff, a lackluster menu full of American dishes (what Americans think is Italian), and the food was less than ok. Vegetables tasteless and hardly enough to pass for a side or appetizer. Pasta lackluster, seafood was really nothing special. People, there are better options on the same strip, just a few feet away! Less crowded, prettier and nicer!
Had lunch during an afternoon trip.
Very crowded but a really nice spot to eat and people watch. I had Pasta Carbonara, which was the daily special and it was on of the best Carbonara dishes on our entire trip to Italy. Tomatoes and mozzarella was delicious.
Look for the cheapest bar along the beach.
This place is an absolute rip-off. Me and partner after a couple Affogato and guess what they charged us 40 bloody euros absolute joke €6 cover charge €4 bread 15 each for the affogato. Going back to the bread, there were four thin slices and there was nothing special about it, looks nice on the outside, but the prices are a joke.
Not worthy the try
Overrated place with slow service. No value for money. Quality and quantity of food was nothing relevant other places in Amalfi Coast. Lastly, my coffee was burnt, after 400 steps to reach this place and they couldn't even serve us a good coffee.
Best Italian food
I literally am dying to go back there I would give up my life savings to get a single slice of pizza from chez black again you have to go there
Perfect spot with great atmosphere and fresh food.
The location and buzz to this place is unrivalled. I wanted the food and service to match those standards but I can imagine it's a tough ask for a busy place with as many tables as this. It wasn't bad, just not as good as I'd hoped (still lovely though)
always a highlight of my Amalfi holidays!
this is perfect beach restaurant! great place to get out of the sun and relax. the food is always spot on and has been for years. I have loved this place since the 80's and it never disappoints! highly recommend the italian experience! busy chatty and chic!
Our last night and we wanted to be in with the crowd.
It was busy, but we were seated pretty quickly. However, placing a order was another story. It felt like we were being skipped over, but I'm sure they were just busy. The ambiance is nice as it is facing the ocean, but at night you cannot see too much. Just people watch and enjoy the hustle and bustle. The interior was full of photos with famous people and people that I don't recognize. We chose a good place I suppose. Our food came out pretty quickly. I had the clam linguine while my friend had the eggplant lasagna. Perfect dinner to end our trip, no complaints here. Prices weren't too bad, but if you think it's expensive, you're most likely paying for the views/location. We didn't mind it at all. They do have a lot of desserts to choose from, but we opt to get ice cream near our hotel.
This was one of our best meals in Italy period.
Sure it may not be your average posh restaurant, however it's serene views of the beach are sure to make up for it. It also doesn't hurt that it's close by the boats which can take you off the coast. Unsurprisingly, the venue was packed when we first arrived, however we waited less than 20 minutes to be seated. As soon as you come in you see piles of freshly caught seafood on display in the back portion of the restaurant. We ordered the margarita pizza, which was crispy and to die for (5/5). We also ordered one of their seafood platters. Everything was delicious and bursting with flavors and dare I say a 6/5. The next time that I come back to Italy, this place will definitely be on my list.
lots of fun
wanted to try squid ink spaggetti. was a bit disappointed with it but drinks were great and we had a great time
Tourist trap for sure.
The food was mediocre and overpriced. Service was poor. The only perk was the ambiance of the restaurant and proximity to the beach. Def avoid if you want an authentic experience!
Avoid this tourist trap!!!
We dined at this restaurant on Oct 27th. The food was overall OK. I ordered pizza, which was very good. My wife ordered lobster ravioli, which she was not thrilled with - said contained very little meat. The gelato was excellent. The problem was the charge. When the waiter first asked us if we would like white or red wine, we asked for red and just a half bottle. In hindsight, we should have asked the price and brand, but we had been doing this all over Italy with fantastic results and very inexpensive prices. When the bill came, that half bottle of wine had a 140 euro charge. the entire bill (wine, pizza, lobster ravioli, gelato, came to 240 euro. I did not question it at the time, thinking maybe this was some kind of special wine and it was my fault for not asking the price up front. I even left a generous tip. Later, I came to find out that a full bottle of this wine sells for about 9 euro. I emailed the establishment. They quickly replied asking me for a copy of the receipt. I sent them the receipt copy and picture of the wine at the time of our dining. More than a week later there has been no reply.
This is what pasta dreams of made of.
The vibe is so fun since it's in the busy area in Positano where the boats take off and people hit the beach. Their tomato flatbread was life changing, simple ingredients but it packed so much flavor. Wanted to go back everyday just for that flatbread. Great service and drinks also.
Mediocre
We stopped in for a light lunch so I ordered a tossed salad(12€) and asked for some grilled shrimp as I wanted some protein in the salad. The salad was fine. The 5 shrimp were served on a separate plate, and were small, greasy and not flavorful at all. Imagine my surprise when we received the bill and was charged 50€ for the 5 limp shrimp. Caveat Emptor, I should have inquired as the cost - 5€ per shrimp is a high price to pay for mediocre shellfish

You're definitely paying for the ambience of being in a tourist trap. I feel the prices are to be expected when visiting Positano. You're right there by the water. The food was good, but definitely not worth the overall price that you're paying it was just based off of quality of food. Everything was freshly made. Nothing beats homemade pasta. The staff was very nice and helpful.

Tourist Trap!! We were so hungry we decided to take a chance and eat at Chez Black. We regret the decision. The food wasn't good and the pricing was insane. 27 euro for spaghetti that tasted straight from the can. Also they charge a cover charge ..what?? Service is not included either. So after 2 drinks a plate of bad spaghetti and a so-so seafood pasta the bill was 111 euro for lunch without the gratuity. Staff didn't seem happy to work there. These types of places should be boycotted in my opinion. I wouldn't go back if I was starving
Had an amazing first experience here and wanted to go back
Had an amazing first experience here and wanted to go back but I forced myself to try other places... after a few decent spots I decided to head back to chez black. Francesco is the best waiter with the best recommendations. I was hesitant because of the mixed reviews but after a week in Positano this is the only place I've returned multiple times.
