Inedible food
The food that was served was barely edible. We ordered the simplest dish, pasta with mushroom. There was no salt, the mushrooms were uncooked. The pasta was greasy. As a disclaimer, we used the bathroom for a change of cloths as we had just landed to New York. And the waiter warned us rudely that we could not do that. I guess he was upset with our feedback about the food.

Great French cuisine. And, they left us alone to have a leisurely dinner. The live music was a treat and the decor both upstairs and down are worth the visit.

The food was delicious and the Alfredow were spectacular.. The lamb chops melt in your mouth and the escargo was the best i have ever had.

I brought my girlfriend at Josephine for her birthday and we got one of the best dining experience ever. Although we waited some time to be seated, they quickly caught up by offering us a cup of champain. Once we got seated, everything was flawless... the vibe was smooth and romantic with the pianoman playing, the food was exquisite, some of the best filet mignon ever and the service was on fleek. Not to miss their delicious cocktails as well. All in all, this has been a huge highlight of our visit in the big apple.

This place was a great surprise, amazing!!!! The french toast was unreal, the service impeccable! We had a wonderful time, the live music made the whole experience truly wonderful!!! The benefict eggs were ok, but the overall experience very very good!! The place is decorated very cute, very french!! Highly recommend

Excellent atmosphere, excellent cocktails, the food was right decent but nothing to write home about (we ordered the French onion soup, the Bolognese dish , and the Salmon dish). For a Saturday night, they were understaffed so the service was slow. For example: we waited 10 minutes before our drink order was taken, then another 20 minutes before we asked where our drinks were, and then another 10 minutes til they arrived. We were never asked if we wanted wine with dinner, but our waters were consistently refilled (so we had water instead with dinner). Too frustrated to order desserts and had to flag down the host to get our check. Amazingly, we were out in 1.75 hours though, plenty of time to get to our show.

I've passed by before but could never remember exactly where it was. It is a tiny place and if you blink you might miss it. Back in November I stumbled upon it again and visited for just a drink at the bar before the theatre. This time, I went back for a full meal after my evening's theatre. Both times I sat at the bar, which is fine. I will talk to anyone. There was someone playing the piano both times and the decor is very unique making for a fun atmosphere that you don't find at many places.
I had the excellent French Onion Soup to start, followed by the Roasted Amish Chicken Breast, and a Red Wine poached Pear with ice cream that was not on the dessert menu. I was impressed with all of it. Every thing was perfectly prepared. The chicken was juicy with crispy skin and with zucchini and spinach, The pear was an unique and sophisticated offering (just like this restaurant) with just the right touch of sweet to end an excellent and memorable meal. I will go back and suggest it to others going up to New York City.
Poor service - very disappointing
Very slow service, we booked for 7.15 at 8.45 we still hasn’t received our main course.
They simply had too many people to serve as the tables are soo crammed together you may as well be sat with the table next door, they were only interested in turning the tables around quickly rather than serving the customers that were sat down.
The food was nice, however the service dampened this greatly.
Some staff we found to be rude, again I don’t think they had a minute to give the customers time of day as they were so busy.
We have visited many other establishments in NY and have received second to none service, unfortunately this place does not match this. Terrible service.
I would avoid based on this unless you enjoy waiting so long for your food and having very poor service.
Never Again.
I met my mother in law here for dinner after her broadway show date. If I had to think of ONE possible “pro” it would be that the minimal staff of 4 front of the house staff, including the manager, were really working hard. Other than that, it was completely awful.
My drink- French margarita = was too sour and too strong
My appetizer- Tuna Tartare = super bland. Not even a squeeze of lemon could save this.
Filet mignon au poivre = cold and forgettable. The worst I’ve ever had.
Profiteroles= hard as bricks. Inedible to say the least.
Check - it took some chasing down of ANY staff member to get our check. And then….it’s wrong. They added an extra drink. It was corrected immediately with no questions asked.
We will never go to Chez Josephine again. And we will tell our friends and visitors the same. Disappointing.
Unique Atmosphere
We loved the atmosphere here, the excellent piano player, but especially the Josephine Baker memorabilia. She is a wonderful historic figure, recently elected into the French Pantheon. Sadly the food quality did not match the decor with some dishes like the duck and onion soup very good, others like the profiterolles barely edible. And it's an expensive place. Extremely slow service as they were under-staffed.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Food, no mask!
This is an intimate restaurant, with low lights and interesting art. There was a piano player for most of the time which was nice. The food was wonderful but none of the employees were wearing mask! (Height of the Omicron variant) Also the restrooms are up a steep set of stairs

Before my screed, one positive comment: the French onion soup was good. But it didn’t begin to atone for the other atrocities at Chez Josephine. We waited over an hour for three of our lunch entrees to arrive (two were undercooked trout, complete with rubbery skin and raw potatoes). The fourth, Croque Monsieur, came 10 minutes later. The kitchen clearly had forgotten the order and hastily assembled a ham and cheese sandwich on cold toast. The waiter presented it without explanation or shame. Perhaps he had sized us up as bridge and tunnel naifs, which we are not. We left five minutes later for our matinee — stomachs empty, spirits dampened. We were charged full price for what one companion described as “the worst meal” he’d ever eaten in New York City.

Went here with my granddaughter for lunch before The Lion King. The ambiance was wonderful and the food delicious. Our waiter was the best. We can’t wait to return.
Be the first to ReplySo disappointing....mediocre food and worst service ever
Chez Josephine is a rare restaurant that has piani every night. Not bad, albeit uninspired. Kudos to the management for offering live music.
Food was acceptable but nothing special. Service was beyond bad. Many mix ups, and we had to ask for items 3x times. Clueless....and it was not that crowded.
