Killer Pancakes.
Chez Ma Tante, a neighbourhood eatery in a Greenpoint block, serves European inspired dishes. Ironically, it swiped it's French name from a Montreal hot-dog shack....but a hot-dog shack it is not. Rather its menu of classic foodfare boasts items like: pigs head terrine, great chips with aioli, mackerel with horseradish and lets not forget the smashing pancakes. I selected the Pork Shoulder (with salsa verde and lentils).......quite savoury. For a sweet, my palate went for the Maple Creme Brûlée all washed down with a tantalizing Banana Hammock, a rum and banana liquor concoction Chez Ma Tante is a meek looking restaurant but it concentrates on making simple straightforward food that tastes very good.

The food was good. A bit on the spicy side. Nice selection of small plates for appetizers. Enjoyed the beans. Wine list is a bit off beat and not very extensive. Vintages were all very recent. Service was good.

While on vacation in NYC, we made reservations based on the wonderful reviews from the restaurant. We are foodies who love to try great restaurants. From the moment we arrived on a rainy, day, the hostess was very unwelcoming, as soon as we got there, I made a comment about the weather and she gave me a blank stare. Not very friendly/weird vibe. We ordered the
Chips/alioli as a starter and they were great. Crispy and fresh. I ordered the Kedgeree with cod and it came cold, it had maybe 4 tiny pieces of cod and lots of celery and parsley, it was flavorful; but it had very little fish. My husband ordered the swordfish which also came cold. When he told the waitress about it, she said that it came hot from the kitchen, but by the time it got to our tables, it had reached the perfect temperature; that was the way to eat it. Same with my fish. We were blown away with the answer, and just ate it at her “perfect temperature”. I also had asked for a side of fava beans, and the chef said No ??!!!!!
The rest of the food was ok, nothing out of the ordinary. I found the place mediocre with very pretentious and rude service.
Very special
What a wonderful dinner!! The menu was top flight and Emily, our waitress, was friendly and knowledgeable, gently guiding us through the many new dishes available to us. There was both an abundance of unusual ingredients and a nice mix of the familiar. We had the eggplant and freekah salad (light and refreshing), duck with bearnaise sauce (absolutely perfectly seasoned and cooked), and the best lemon tart I've ever had for dessert. The setting is friendly and warm. Even though we live in Boston, it was worth the trip and we'll be back!

We enjoyed a Sunday brunch, unfortunately sitting at the bar due to the long wait for a table. The service was excellent nevertheless and we enjoy a boudin noir with a single fried egg (very good but a bit minimalist given the absence of bread). the kedgeree with rice and cod was very tasty but not worth 22$, as the 2 pancakes for 15$ felt too much. The quiche was instead excellent, abundant and value priced a 16$.
Orange juice (small portion) at 7$? Again too much
Nice
Another highly rated NY restaurant. This one lived up to the accolades. Atmosphere and food and service.

...to find a more intimate, comfortable restaurant with some of the best food and service I have ever experienced. I would recommend menu items but myself and 4 other family members ordered almost everything from the menu between us and everything was simply great. I would say this is a $$$ place but I have never spent my money more wisely than here. Great experience; great variety; great service...don't miss this one!

We decided to take a ride to Brooklyn to try a restaurant that had been getting very good reviews and we made a reservation and off we went. It's a small corner store front that seats maybe 36 at most. No elaborate furnishings just a nice, clean and simple local restaurant. This is were all of the boring stuff ends. The restaurant was absolutely wonderful, the service was spot on and the entire staff couldn't have been more gracious.
Being that the point of our visit was to sample the cuisine, we basically ordered 5 of the 7 starters along with 4 of the 6 mains and a couple of deserts just for the heck of it. For the starters we had the Pighead terrine, don't get taken back by the name of it, it was flavorful and had a country flavour, this was a perfect segue into the country pate with prune and pistachio another winner. The steak tartare with potato chips was phenomenal, it makes you wonder how anyone can eat a steak that's ever cooked more than rare. We could have had plates of this serving. To close out the starter round we had the Boudin noir, fried egg and parsley salad and at the same time a plate of the Stracciatella with Marcona almonds and preserved lemon. This 2 offerings were excellent as well, but to me the first 3 were just a notch above.
Being that we were sharing everything we were sipping our wines, (they have a reasonable corkage policy, so for us we're always bringing our on bottles!) now came the 4 mains, Fennel sausage with dijon and lentils, it was much better then i anticipated it would be, This was followed with the Monkfish with fennel, olives and pine nuts. The next plate was the pork shoulder with a "blow your socks off," horseradish cream and potatoes. As that was placed on the table another server was putting on the table duck breast, with carrots, turnips and tarragon. The mains were worth the drive alone, if I could have only gotten a container of the horseradish cream to go, I'd have felt like I was in pig heaven.
For deserts we had the apple sorbet with Polish vodka along with a chocolate cake that was out of this world. Everything was truly wonderful and to have the hour drive each way was meaningless considering how great the restaurant is.
Go for the Food, Stay for the Attitude: Don't Miss Chez Ma Tante
This place is popular. And for good reason. The food is good and very unique. The room is small and was packed on a busy Sunday. Nothing special for decoration. But I have to say, the crowd is very young, as I suspect is the neighborhood. I’d label them hipsters, but they seemed far too hip for that. This is not a criticism. The crowd is great. Good people watching. The service was good. The room felt a touch understaffed but the crew worked through it. They are pros. The food was the star here. Not huge portions. But very good flavor. I enjoyed my egg sandwich a bit more than my friend’s croque madame. The superstar was the famous pancakes. Stunning. We’d return all the way to Brooklyn just for the pancakes. All in, we enjoyed Chez Ma Tante and if you are interested in an interesting food experience I suspect you will too.

I will go back everyday to Chez Ma Tante just for their fries and aioli. I loved the cozy ambiance and the friendly service. The food was very good and they had plenty of gluten free items for me. We shared a couple of appetizers and we each had our entree. My monkfish was ok, however not the best I had. My friend had the kedgeree and loved it. Overall its a cozy little restaurant with great food and friendly staff. I give it my GoldnAdvice seal of approval.
