Best Japanese in town
Having seen Tokyo, this place hits the spot. You get that Japanese feeling right from the entrance. Waiting room may be a bit small, but got quickly seated at the table - not overpriced and great sushi. Second time there was at the counter and the sale of the day (£8/pitch) made the night!

The food was good however the service left a lot to be desired. They brought all plate at once even though there was no space on the table anymore. We ordered a miso cod, which was supposed to be a main but came before all the sushi plates had arrived. They just dumped everything on the table as and when, while it was clear that there was no space on the table to put the plates anymore. I asked the initial waiter for cutlery and he totally forgot so had to ask a second person. Despite of having clocked up a bill of £200 for two, the waiter came to our table exactly 59 minutes after our reservation time to inquire if we wanted something else as they had another booking in 30 minutes. There was plenty of space inside and a couple of tables empty outside as well. We felt rushed and just dumped on. Totally incommensurate to the excessively high prices that they command. Disappointed... I really did not want to leave the service charge but they just keyed in onto the payment machine so I did not want to go through the hassle and embarrassment to ask them to take it off. If something is optional it should be left to the guest's discretion upon keying in the amount....Felt a little extorting as I do not think that there was any service. they just brought the plates.

Every time that I'm in London I eat here. I have also brought many guests and friends. It is good value, consistent and, for me, a must visit.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Surprise
I went to two pricey sushi places on my trip to London and was pleasantly surprised that this was the best food wise.

Great atmosphere and tasty food. Came here with friends and family. We all ordered different dishes, I picked a sushi-special from the lunch-menu. We all enjoyed the stay, and will for sure come back if we have the opportunity.
Be the first to ReplyVery good Japanese
This is a very good Japanese restaurant just off Oxford street . The sushi and tuna were excellent and the quality of meat fantastic Very good fresh food at every course There is an outdoor eating area and if you choose inside it’s a bit tight but does have a very good atmosphere Reasonably priced too for a good restaurant in london ! If you want a good Japanese then this fits the bill
Be the first to ReplyExcellent lunch
Set on a quiet side street off a busy Oxford st, the location is great for a chilled Japanese lunch. The staff are friendly and the decor is a nice minimalist Japanese look. The food is excellent and presented well. The set lunch menu is delicious and offers a wide variety from sushi, sashimi, eel and all sorts.
Be the first to ReplyAlmost £60 lunch for two left me hungry.
The service and atmosphere is lovely in this restaurant and, as a coeliac, they had a decent range of gluten free options. I chose a grilled salmon lunch set (miso soup, salmon with salad pickles and rice, plus dessert). However, I didn’t receive my miso soup, and my salad didn’t turn up either. The salmon, whilst tasty, barely touched the sides and the dessert was three bites of fresh orange, albeit beautifully presented. Not at all value for money and I left hungry and disappointed with only a nominal bill reduction upon complaining as compensation.

The best Japanese Izakaya experience.
Food, service and sake were amazing. Make sure you try the tuna.
As for the sake, my favourite was the 50 Stream - felt like fig flavoured water.
Can't ask for much more
I visited Chisou as a guest of a friend who had visited before and it was a great choice; the food, service and ambience were top class and whilst the food isn't cheap - with Japanese it rarely is - from reviewing the menu it wasn't excessive.
I'd be delighted to return her eagain.
First time
Wow never usually have Japanese food or any sushi. First time to try it but very tasty. Surprised at how little can fill me up very quickly. Will try some more again
Be the first to ReplyTop quality sushi & exceptional service
Best Sushi we have ever had and exceptional service. The thinly sliced beef fillet in ponzu was delicious. Would recommend and will definitely be returning. Thank you for the special meal.
Be the first to ReplyBest sashimi outside of Tokyo
I have been a lifelong fan of Japanese cuisine and went most recently went to Tokyo in 2019. Chisou stands above the crowd of all fine dining Japanese restaurants I've been to outside Japan. My mum had been there one time prior and had an amazing experience, my father and I both went for the first time tonight with her. The menu is a complex and interesting overview of all Japanese cuisine highlights, including a comprehensive menu of Sushi/Sashimi, Noodles (Udon/Soba), Teriyaki/Tempura, and some delightful takes on the traditional izakaya offering. They also offer an extensive sake menu, with some very unique items that complement whatever you choose to order.
Beyond their superbly cultivated menu, the service at Chisou can only be described as exceptional. The entire staff truly care if you are having a good time, and are happily there to provide advice on guiding you through your meal. My dad is not a huge fan of raw seafood, and the sushi chef took an interest in challenging his hesitations- he offered us an incredible smoked mackerel as an amuse-bouche to test if my dad would like it, and he did.
We ordered a number of starters- the gyoza, fried oysters, uni, and chuuka seaweed salad- all were superb. I was extremely impressed at the freshness and quality of the ingredients, as well as the beauty and care with presentation. For his main, my dad ordered the tofu steak, which was the most velvety and flavourful tofu we have had outside of our favourite place in Tokyo (called I <3 Gyoza).
My mum and I had the sashimi omekase for 2, and the consideration from the chef was beyond exceptional. He asked us our preferences, my mum is a fan of ami ebi, I love tako and ika- all 3 were of the highest quality I've experienced. He also took a great interest in how we were enjoying things and continually provided advice or information about what we were eating.
The waiting staff was also extremely caring and fun to speak with, and really were happy to see that we enjoyed ourselves. The manager also gave us a wonderful recommendation of an undistilled sake to go with our desserts, that was simply fabulous.
Chisou is not just truly fantastic dining in terms of quality of food and service, but a theatrical experience that will make you feel as if you've teleported from London right into a Japanese izakaya. We have already booked a reservation to go back tomorrow and I cannot wait.
Excellent sashimi in a comfortable room with good service.
After the excellent sashimi meals I have had in Los Angeles and Paris, I have found London very disappointing in this regard. I have been searching for a good sashimi experience.
I hesitate to review a restaurant after only one visit, but I had such a great time at Chisou tonight and the fish was so spectacular, that I can't resist.
It's a pretty, but modest room. The service was excellent. I sat alone at the sushi bar and everyone was very attentive.
I started with the fried oysters which were delicious, crispy on the outside and wonderfully creamy in the interior, served with both a semi-sweet sauce and a spicy mustard and excellent pickled shredded cabbage.
Then I opted for the omakase sashimi. Never in London have I had the itamae ask my preferences, but he did. I said I liked white fish better than salmon or tuna and that ama ebi was my favourite. I received a magnificent array of white fish- sea bass, sea bream, yellowtail, butterfish, and five pieces of ama ebi, which I had asked for specifically. I was charged the regular price for the 5 piece sashimi selection. The butterfish could not have been more buttery. All the fish was clean and fresh and beautifully prepared. The ama ebi was as good as any I have ever had.
I had a pickle thin roll to finish, and I am so happy to be able to get this-- they also have a sour plum roll-- as I have found them hard to find.
The service was excellent: attentive without being obsequious.
We will definitely be going back.
Thanks to itamae and everyone at Chisou for a lovely meal.
Love it - visited twice in a month
Being Japanese, it's really hard to find a good Japanese restaurant in London and to trust the quality of fish in sashimi. We love Chisou! The staff are so lovely and their lunch sets are very good value. Plenty for non-fish eaters - the beef teriyaki was delicious.
