Contento Restaurant New York Reviews from The Last Year
I loved this place under Chef Oscar and am thrilled to say
I loved this place under Chef Oscar and am thrilled to say I can still wholeheartedly embrace it under Chef Asia. The new menu slaps. The pernil is amazing and the strawberry tres leches was the best tres leches of my life. We enjoyed the roti so much, we got a second one. The crab was delicious too. The famous ceviche recipe is still the same, except the Peruvian corn had been replaced by sweet corn. Gotta bring the Peruvian corn back!
I was pretty underwhelmed by our meal here.
The only thing I can really rave about was the roti -- which was very very good, just that perfect combo of fried dough and salt. I ordered the jerk mushroom, which was fine; husband had the pernil, which he enjoyed. He also ordered the cornbread, which he didn't like (and didn't finish). I ordered the collard greens salad, which honestly felt like a kale salad with minimal watermelon (was it pickled even?). Husband ordered the banana pudding for dessert, which was sort of an ice cream cone situation: the pudding wrapped in a wafer shell cone with two slices of brûléed banana and some cherry jam on top. The cherry didn't really work flavor wise, and while clever and "different," I'm not sure banana pudding in a cone is really banana pudding enough. Service was good, and food came out very quickly. But I feel like it was pretty expensive, particularly the two "large plates" considering what was on them. I mean, my salad -- half the price -- felt like more food than the mushroom dish I ordered. I really wanted to like this place, and was looking forward to Peruvian meal. But I'm not sure what the flavors were supposed to be now with a new chef -- everything was sort of all over the place, even within a dish. Other tables all went with the whole fish -- which was $130 as the server said these particular snappers were larger than normal. They looked amazing -- a whole fish is always a stunning plate. Maybe we just chose the wrong dishes. (And yeah, we didn't try the ceviche.) But with such a limited menu, I feel like -- statistically -- we should have fared better.
Forget the past.
New chef, new menu-----no longer Peruvian but some combo of southern/african/who knows what. Very limited choice of mains---five, of which one was veg and one was steak. Very extensive wine list seems silly now. Overuse of garlic in every starter. Used to be a go -to place where I took NYC visitors. Now off my list. Nice people is nice to have but that's not why I go to a resto. Too bad.
Tried the Prie Fixe.
Room for improvement: use Peruvian corn instead of canned sweet corn for the $26 ceviche. Burger didn't stand out: could use some texture and acidity like crispy fried onions or pickled onions. Overall, expected more for the price point. Service could be more attentive: we had to ask for more napkins twice. Ambiance was good though and there seems to be regulars!
Not great anymore
A lot has changed in the 4 years since we were last at La Contenta. They, take reservations now, although the hostess was unable to locate ours but "squeezed" us in anyway. The cocktails are okay, not the best but certainly not the worst. The food however, has gone majorly downhill. We ordered the Enchiladas Suizas, which were delicious. We also order the Chile Relleno which was inedible. The inside was still uncooked, all the veggies were still crunchy. We told 3 separate people who all in their various ways, just shrugged or said "oh really?" Not one apology, offer to remake, offer to replace, or even take it off the bill. We ended up sharing the enchiladas and left hungry after paying for 2 meals. I likely won't return and no longer recommend.

We looove Contento! Food was super delicious, ambiance cool and unpretentious, although the restaurant was very busy, our table was ready on time and service was impeccable. We had a wonderful time and intend to come back!!!

The food was creative, delicious and inspired! The soft shell crab had the most amazing lightly curried coconut broth, and the pulpo was perfection. The plantain gnocchi and oxtail was meltingly flavorful, both comfort food and an elevated experience. Our server was knowledgeable, unobtrusive and helpful. We were there to celebrate my and a friend's birthday and while I won't spoil how the staff helped make it a fun end to our festive evening, suffice it to say it was truly pitch perfect. Absolutely recommend!
Woweee! This spot is incredible! It's pricey but worth it.
I love that it was started by two guys in wheelchairs and has a wonderfully accessible bathroom and adaptive utensils available. My partner also uses a wheelchair and we were very excited to come by. The staff were very kind, very knowledgable, and also very patient when half of our party was late to our reservation. The food was magical, I can't recommend the Arroz Con Pato strongly enough! It was fantastic and I'm still dreaming about it weeks later. Definitely come by and check them out. The wine pairing is superb!

I really wanted to love this place but it was just ok for me. It's supposed to be Peruvian inspired and I've heard nothing but great things from friends, however, I felt things fell a little short flavor-wise during my visit. My friend booked a reservation for us which we ended up having to move to a later time, thankfully the staff was very gracious and allowed me to sit at the table while I waited. I wanted to try one of the N/A cocktails but was told they had ran out, the bartender was nice enough to prepare an alternative for me which I appreciated. I cannot recall the ingredients of that drink but it was enjoyable. Now in terms of the food, for starters we had the ceviche clasico - no notes as it was delicious, the yakisoba noodles with crab - very tasty, and the crispy yuca which was just ok. Sadly, I did not enjoy much of what came after. For mains, my friend ordered the short rib udon noodles which she seemed to really like. I ordered the roasted dorado and it was disappointing - it lacked flavor from the fish to the garlic rice and I did not eat much of it as a result. For dessert, we had the lucuma mousse tart which was good. I'd love to come back and try some new things. Perhaps that will change my experience but I'm not sure that it will be soon.

Extremely rude and unwelcoming staff - especially the hostess (I believe her name was Jackie?). Very unsanitary place and in a sketchy area too. Would not recommend this place

Just happened upon the place for an early dinner and had an excellent meal-- ceviche (yum), yuca, (yummer), Peruvian caesar (too acidic for me), roasted dorado (perfectly crisp skin and sweet/tender, and the rice with corn very tasty but slightly overcooked). Cocktails were delicious! Go!
I went during restaurant week and I loved it so much.
I went back a few more times lol. The food was high quality and the service was spectacular. I would say it's on the pricey side but 100% worth it. The inside is romantic and there's an open kitchen. Love the paintings on the walls too. Highly recommend this gem in east Harlem. such an extensive wine menu too. The steak entree and the scallop ceviche appetizer is my favorite.
Place looks nice and cozy, but service sucks.
The most of the dishes you can taste butter. Had like 7 dishes, didn't like it... scallop ceviche is so bad and comes with a bunch of whip cream or butter on the middle doesn't make any sense to mix a ceviche with whip butter in the middle, the typical ceviche comes with the american white sweet corn instead of PERUVIAN CORN, came here for the PERUVIAN EXPERIENCE, but this is not, the hostess/waitress so happy ( being sarcastic) not even a smile, or even ask if we needed something, i was afraid to ask for something... and on top OVERPRICED for really bad dishes, the ONLY attentive person was the bartender/ waiter/busboy.... (Dan) happy and hard working.......drinks were good and the cancha they give you to start (toasted maized) is the only thing i enjoyed...
~4.5 Star (read to see why) I visited Contento for Winter
~4.5 Star (read to see why) I visited Contento for Winter Restaurant Week 2024 with my friend and it didn't disappoint. We've been doing restaurant week every season for several years now and I'd say this was a memorable dinner. VIBE: This Peruvian spot is a seemingly hidden spot located in Spanish Harlem. One step inside brings your into a modern bit still warm and cozy inside dining area. It's a smaller restaurant and has both table and bar seating inside and heated seating outside. I'll admit that I did make a reservation for indoors for 2 but when I got there the only available seating was at the bar or outside. They let us step into their heated outdoor dining area and we ultimately decided to sit out there. It was a surprisingly cozy ambiance in their outdoor area and they included blankets on every seat (which I did utilize towards the end of our dinner). I should note it was 20 degrees the evening we were there so our toes did get a little cold but the extreme cold should be taken into account. With their heaters I was comfortable thought the dinner. APPETIZERS: ROASTED CARROTS (w/ ricotta and spicy tahini, algarrobina, crispy shallots) - Absolutely delicious. The carrots were nicely canalized and the ricotta tahini spread was delicious. Paired with the crispy shallots, I really enjoyed the various textures and flavors. If you like savory and sweet you'll enjoy this SCALLOP CEVICHE (w/ cauliflower mousseline, leche de pantera, corn, scallions) This scallop ceviche took us both by surprise with how well balanced the flavors were. The lime flavor was light and balanced so it was a very clean and refreshing flavor, not at all overwhelming. The corn added a nice texture and soaked up the ceviche sauce and the scallops were nice and tender. I honestly forgot the sauce was made with cauliflower because that taste also wasn't overwhelming. I also appreciated the use of squid ink in the dish which gave it a unique color. If you like scallops and ceviche you'll love this. MAIN DISH: STEAK FRITES (hanger steak, peruvian crispy potatoes, huacatay & aji limo, maitre d'hôtel butter) This item wasn't on the standard menu when we went so it was a restaurant week specific dish. FIRST...I'm a bit unsure of what steak cut we were supposed to receive because our server said for that evening they were replacing their usual skirt steak with a NY strip but the menu said hanger steak. I'm also just realizing that the menu listed that it would have huacatay & aji limo which when I looked up sounded like a mint and spicy pepper which were not incorporated into the dish because I didn't have anything minty or spicy but I definitely had the maitre d'hôtel herb butter. Now as for the actual dish, the potatoes were exceptionally crispy and lightly salted. Think it's when something is double fried. That crispy. I did enjoy my steak with the butter on it and my friend did too, but I think I just have gotten terribly unlucky with the cut because my steak had a thick piece of gristle (that chewy rubbery hard stuff) along the entire long side of the steak which unfortunately made it very hard to eat and cut around. HOWEVER, my friend's steak was clean and easy to slice and eat so not sure what happened there. It's unfortunate because I love steak but it was hard to fully enjoy it while trying to cut around a very thick tough chewy piece. I wish I could have gotten a different cut. DESSERT: ARROZ CON LECHE CHEESECAKE (w/ mazamorra morada sauce, cinnamon rice crisp) This was a unique dish that we both enjoyed. It was thick kind of like cheesecake but not too rich and not too sweet. It had a texture that is reminiscent of how textured rice pudding is due to rice but it wasn't liquid at all. The marzamorra morada sauce was a delicious complement to the mild cheesecake. I would describe it as sweet and a bit tart like a berry type sauce but it actually gets it's deep color from Peruvian purple corn! CHOCOLATE FLAN (w/ coffee, whipped cream, tonka beans, caramel) I definitely enjoyed this dessert but the texture definitely threw me off. I'm Filipino so when I think flan I expect a creamy custardy texture but this was much more like a mouse. It was kind of light and airy. Although I would argue this is not flan, it was none the less delicious. I enjoyed the coffee flavor in the desert and would recommend it for those who like that mocha. SERVICE: Dan was our server and he was fantastic. He answered all my question and made some excellent recommendations. We were the only ones in the outside seating area for a while had he checked in just frequently enough which is great because we were initially worried they'd forget about us out there. So overall I would say it's closer to 4.5 stars. Flavors, food, and vibes were all great. The hiccup for me was the quality of my steak. Considering that my friends' piece looked amazing, I would give them a second chance though so you should check them out yourself!

Finally got to try this "Peruvian-inspired" restaurant in East Harlem! My friend and I did their Winter 2024 Restaurant Week $60 pre fixe dinner last Thursday, and we both loved it. First, shout-out to the staff for letting me just hang out at my table (yes, I made a reservation) for an hour and slowly sip on a drink while waiting for my friend. I arrived around 6:30 PM, and by 7 PM, the restaurant was full - all indoor bar space and tables (note that they have some heated outdoor seating as well). Thank you for never making me feel rushed! I ordered a daiquiri and the waiter kindly let me know after I had nearly finished that he realized that they had made me a non-alcoholic one, so they gave me one with alcohol on the house. The drink was very smooth and sweet, so I never would have noticed otherwise, but I appreciated the conscientiousness! While waiting for my friend, I appreciated the Latin music playlist and reading all the facts about the state of disability in the US sprinkled throughout the wine list. One really cool thing about Contento is that they have made it "barrier-free," as two of the co-owners use wheelchairs (look up a 2021 NYT article about them :) ). Love to support a space in NYC that values accessibility! On to the menu: my friend and I decided to split a bunch of different dishes so we could maximize our experience - definitely they way to go. We tried the roasted carrots and scallop ceviche small dishes. Already plenty of food! The carrots were good, but the ceviche was fantastic - I haven't had ceviche like that anywhere else in NYC. Next we had the steak (medium rare) and the mussels with focaccia. The steak was wonderful, but the mussels and whatever sauce they made was next level. Finally, we split the flan and cheesecake. The flan was my personal favorite between the two, but both were divine. I also ended up having a pisco sour, which was also excellent. They have cocktail specials for $16 but a "regular" cocktail will run you $20+. Overall, it was ~$100 pp if you include a cocktail, tax, and tip. Absolutely worth it. Definitely a highlight in my first month of 2024 restaurant outings!

Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate |
Yes unfortunately they are finding more and more ways to lock up sellers money. Sell thru rate, refund rate, limiting withdrawal amounts ler day and per month (which for me are the same number which makes no sense). Lot of sellers leaving as you can see from the lifetime sales not really increasing. Most posts on here are frustrated sellers which is not a recipe for success

Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.

Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it? |
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid? |
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted. |
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from? |
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered? |
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
Reservation transfer issue
Purchased double chicken please for two hours from now and no response from Appointment Trader regarding my name transfer request which I paid for yesterday. I believe the original reservation holder is a bot as it seems like it when i tried contacting directly. Do I have any recourse if they won’t let me in the restaurant?
