Don't miss this restaurant - if you can get in!
What a great restaurant! The food was magnificent. Expect only fish becuase they only offer fish - but in so many varied configurations! We had the most delicious tuna tostadas - the very best dish we have had all week! We had king fish tacos with pineapple and cilantro. We had fish cerviche. We had shrimp with angel hair pasta perfectly blended with just enough butter. We had the most amazing desserts too - A fig tart, a beautiful meringue cake with fresh strawberries. YUM. And a helpful and highly attentive server. Could not have been a better experience. Be prepared, the restaurant is lively and very loud.

Place was packed. Our server was quick to recommend some items. We had the tuna tostadas( good but one of the tostadas had a stringy piece on it), scallop ceviche which was great. Our entrees were great, we did order the fish with green and red sauce. Desserts were nice as well, although we couldn’t try the merengue because it was already sold out for the night. Definitely would come back here.

This place is amazing. The food was great. The service was fabulous. The wait staff were so attentive. Great recommendations on what to try. I cannot say enough good things about them.

Could not wait to try! I was so excited to get a table after a friend highly recommended. My husband and I sampled everything that had the best praises. We loved every bite and wanted more! Sadly, I later got food poisoning from what I suspect was the tuna tostada since it hit me pretty quickly and was the only thing I had seperately from my husband the entire day.

This place was outstanding. It was super busy and noisy but I understand why. The food was incredible and worth the wait to get in. We started with the ahi tostadas. This dish has me dreaming about it. I could eat this over and over again. Next we had the pescado al pastor tacos. These were also outstanding and interesting flavors. Finally we had the pescado alla talla. It was really tasty and offered two different sauces. Overall a great meal and must have stop to Mexico City.

It’s been eight years since I first ate at Contramar and I’d say this second visit was on par: You’re going to get really good seafood. What’s changed since then are your alternative eating options. We had meals elsewhere that outshined Contramar. So if you’ve got time for choices, this place still is a good choice. If not, you may want to skip it. The tried-and-true tuna tostadas were amazing. Simple yet packed with flavor. The flounder was delicious thanks to the sear laden with Adobo and spices, although it was on the edge of being overcooked. This meal’s crowning achievement was the grilled octopus. The texture of the meat was amazingly soft and without any chewiness that I typically encounter when I order octopus in the U.S.
Be the first to ReplyGood food, but not a pleasant experience for the price
We have eaten at Contramar several times over the years visiting Mexico City, but after this experience I would not go back. Tables seemed even more jammed than before into the huge open space and the decibel level topped 80 (shouting necessary at a table for four). We were lucky to be in the back corner by an open door to the sidewalk, so at least we had a breeze. About halfway through the meal, the restaurant started setting up a table for 20 right next to us. Started by pushing our table closer to the corner (they did warn us) then the waiters were squeezing by our table carrying heavy chairs over our heads. Nobody apologized and the waiters seemed intent on getting us out of there as fast as possible. Yes, the food was good, but Mexico City is full of great seafood restaurants; we had a more flavorful seafood stew the next day in a fonda at the Xochimilco market hall.
Be the first to ReplyGood food, but...
The food was delicious, but the experience was lacking. Very crowded, noisy and we felt like the waiters were trying to rush us out.

Everyone I know highly recommended this spot for us to try during our CDMX trip so we had high expectations. The wait was 2 hours even at 4pm but we were able to put our name down and walk around. Ambiance/decor felt a little dated for such a popular restaurant. The food was okay, really nothing spectacular. We got the tuna tostadas, large fish, and some other various tacos. Honestly, nothing really stood out to me except for the octopus tacos. I don’t even usually like octopus but these were delicious paired with the salsa it’s served with. The rest of the food was good but really nothing special, and the fish, which I was most excited about, was a little bland. Overall everything was decent but I don’t understand the hype surrounding this spot.

We stopped by , without a Res ( although it’s highly recommended), hoping to get in. Lunch time , as it opens seems to be the best time . There’s seating outside( not our preference, it’s a busy street). Indoors , it’s ample and bustling with Activity. Our server, “ Faban” took our drink orders ( they have a full s service bar , as well as nonalcoholic beverages) Their selections are varied, fr soup to nuts. They can address most “ allergies” . I preface this because, after securing a reservation for a “ highly” popular “Michelin “ rated restaurant, We were informed the night before , that they could not accommodate “ allergies”!! So bear that in mind, if someone in your has allergies We started with “ toastadas de atún” Faban made sure that each food item was safe for our family member, never felt left out. He went beyond expectations. The food , was delicious, well executed, beautifully presented. Pescado a la talla( whole fish), tacos esmedregal, There’s an assortment of sauces, spicey, savory ,that you can sample. We ordered one dessert, postre de higo OMG Great service, fantastic food!,

This place is run very professionally. The waiters are caring and fast, the food is excellent, the prices are reasonable. It was full of guests and a bit noisy when we were there. Not a place for a romantic dinner, but a good option for tourists.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent seafood Mexico City
Contramar exceeded our expectations. The seafood was so fresh and delicious and the service was excellent too. We gobbled up every morsel and considered trying to go back just for the tuna tostadas! Don’t miss it if you can snag a reservation.
Be the first to ReplyCame twice. While service was mixed, food is great and high quality
Came twice and while service was excellent the first time around, it was haphazard and sloppy the second time. Despite this, this establishment is high quality. I didn’t love the octopus taco as much as other people did but looooved the fish taco (“al pastor”) and the fried shrimp taco. The fig tart is truly excellent— crust is yummy and the figs are fresh and flavorful. Didn’t need a reservation although many people do recommend it.
Be the first to ReplyOMG seafood Mexican style - THE BEST!
Seriously world class service and food. Can’t miss spot in Mexico City. The ahi tuna tostadas que incredible! Great service attentive and Uber competent - strongly recommend
Be the first to ReplyTop fish restaurant in Mexico City.
Our wives had visited the restaurant last year and insisted that we return. The restaurant did not disappoint!! It was amazing. The tuna tostada was fantastic. We needed a second order. The whole fish prepared 2 ways was excellent. Others had shrimp and different types of fish. Everyone enjoyed. Even though the restaurant was very busy the service was excellent. Clearly a top choice.
Be the first to ReplyA bit of a let down
This place definitely caters to Americans. You can tell because when they bring you the bill the first thing they ask is if you want to tip 20% or more! :) Most of the customers seem to be tourists. The food is good, fine, but nothing out of the ordinary if you've had access to decent seafood restaurants before. As everybody has noted, it is on the more expensive side for the city. Service is also okay. I'm not sure I would recommend this as a "must" as everyone seems to say!
Be the first to ReplyIconic restaurant, a must when in Mexico City
We loved everything about this place! Food is amazing. Save some space for desserts! Perfect service. Great people watching too…
Be the first to ReplyOverrated food with a side of food poisoning?
The food was overrated in my opinion - the octopus was oily and didn’t have much seasoning and despite ordering shrimp tacos I got fish tacos instead (although I didn’t mind too much as I love fish tacos). Had the shrimp pasta for a main and the shrimps seemed a bit ‘off’ and the pasta was over cooked, mushy and clumpy. The food also had zero seasoning and was extremely bland. A few hours later I experienced stomach cramps and I’ve had them ever since (5 days and counting…) For the price there’s definitely other seafood restaurants I’d suggest. I’m so disappointed with the food, particularly when you’re talking about ‘one of the best seafood places in Mexico city’ and you’re paying extortionate amounts. The staff were absolutely fantastic though, so I’ll give them that!

Had the most amazing lunch at Contramar. Food was amazing and service was impeccable. Our waiter Ivan was so great and helped us decide what to order.
Be the first to ReplyGet the Tuna Tostadas
Clean and modern with a lively atmosphere. We sat outside since it was a pretty evening and the people watching was good. They had their own security personnel standing outside nearby at all times. Everyone recommends to get the tuna tostadas for a reason - they're amazing. Get an order for each person because you won't want to share. We also enjoyed their extensive mezcal list and fish tacos. The service was also great - our server and others were quick to refresh drinks and clear plates. My only disappointment was that they were out of the incredible looking Strawberry Meringue cake for dessert. Next time! Oh, and if you have trouble getting a reservation via Open Table, just email the restaurant directly. That worked for us.
Be the first to ReplyWorth the hype. Join the waiting list. It’s worth it.
Yup. It’s all that. It is worth all the hype. We waited for an hour to get seated, grabbed beers at the place next door while we waited. The food is truly joyous and the service impeccable. I feel like we need to eat here several more times as I noticed the meals around us coming in were gorgeous. We had ceviche, sopes and salads since we were craving salads and just something light. Then I went for the fish tacos Al pastor, just because it seemed like an interesting concept. Wow. It really was great. The only downsides is the wait, the beers aren’t cold, and the service is so on point that it feels rushed for someone melting into a slower pace. Either way, we’re going back.

Possibly my favorite seafood restaurant in the world. Tuna and octopus tostadas were unbelievably fresh and the fig cake dessert was out of this world. Fantastic spot for a fun, boozy lunch.
Be the first to ReplyBest restaurant our trip!
Contramar was maybe the best meal I had in Mexico. Yup, it totally, 100%, completely, absolutely lives up to ALL the hype! My wife and I disagreed on the best dish of the evening: Aguachile with scallops? Hers. Or shrimp tostados? Mine. We ordered so much other stuff too, the rest of the food was a blur. But it was all so darn delicious. Nom. Nom. Nom. The restaurant is almost entirely seafood and I don’t think you can go wrong with anything on the menu. We had trouble with reservations but our hotel pulled through at the last minute. I suspect if you go on a normal weeknight (not Friday or Saturday) you can get in if you are patient. There are a lot of tables and they turned them over quickly. They also seemed to empty out a little at the end of the shift. Go to Contramar. Don’t debate. Go there now!
Be the first to ReplySolid meal!
This was a good spot for dinner. It wasn’t my favorite but it was good food, good service and I’d go back eventually. We had the tuna tostadas-delicious. The fried fish tacos were pretty good, ceviche was very good. the house specialty fish with two sauces was unique and tasty. The strawberry merengue dessert was fantastic!
Be the first to ReplyA bit too loud and rushed but food was fantastic
The seafood was fantastic! Perfectly cooked, seemed very fresh, very well flavored. We did feel the place is a bit rushed, no real attention to anything. Also the place is very loud, too many tables for its space. Terrible acoustics, some simple measures could probably be taken against that. Given the price point very good value for money.
