I know I'll sound like a grumpy old man, but I hate it when a place is too loud and you almost have to yell so the other people at your table can hear. Having said that, I really liked the modern decor. It was bright inside and not like the traditional New York Italian lit by candlelight. The food was pretty good. We stared with the grilled octopus appetizer. The octopus was cooked nice and tender. I'm usually not a fan of garbanzo beans but these were marinated and pretty tasty. The rib-eye beef capriccio was another hit. Thin, tender slices topped with something crunchy. The kids meal was huge and she enjoyed it. The rigatoni bolanase was OK. Not that flavorful. Some garlic and oregano would help. But the star was the lamb gnocchi. The other daughter had the starter as her meal. The gnocchi was perfectly shaped and soft. The pesto was delicious. Now I would have given this place 4 stars based on the gnocchi alone. But the added a 3.95% charge to pay their employees. I believe they should be paid a fair wage but the restaurant is responsible for paying their employees right. I would be OK paying higher prices but charging a surcharge because your too cheap to pay your employees is a slap in the face. Minus 1 star for you screwing your employees.

I've tried this place twice based on the raving reviews online and from others that have been. Twice I have been pretty underwhelmed unfortunately. It's not bad but it's not great either... I had their giant meatball appetizer which was pretty damn dry and their Bucatini Amatriciana pasta which was simply alright. My friend ordered the Short Rib Papardelle which I sampled as well and again only okay. I've tried so many Italian joints in San Diego because pasta is my absolute favorite and this just wasn't it. I'm not sure what all the rave reviews are about but maybe many other dishes I have not tried.
Be the first to ReplyDinner here was delicious.
The octopus and focaccia bread were great starters. We especially enjoyed the pork chop. The wines by the bottle were reasonably priced. I especially enjoyed the butter cake with a 20 year old tawny.

You are definitely paying more for the atmosphere than the food here. The jight we went out was a bit busy on a weekday, but the service was particularly slow. As a place with so much reviews, I was excited to finally try it out for my birthday. To put it simply, the pasta dishes were bland. No flavor on the pasta, not even a hint of salt. I had to keep going back to the short rib to add some flavor and salt to make the pasta palatable. The saving grace to the dinner were the appetizers. The focaccia had great texture and saltiness. The best thing of the night were the brussels sprouts with their homemade "hot sauce" (which was peppery). The Brussel sprouts were extra crispy and had tons of flavor.Lastly, we had their tiramisu for dessert and it was by far the densest tiramisu I've ever had. It is great if you like a thicker texture, but I always preferred a more lighter and more coffee flavor in my tiramisu. It tasted more like eating buttercream of a cake with a spritz of coffee.

I would've given them a 5 star rating if it wasn't for the outdoor dining area. Food and service was excellent! Had an outdoor reservation for 7 people, I was expecting a large outdoor patio. Instead we were under an overhang on the sidewalk. I should've looked more into the outdoor dining area. It is what it is. Next time I'll book an indoor reservation

This place has been a 5 star place for me even from my first visit years ago. If you have not been do not sleep on it, well worth the visit especially if you are a wine lover. Some friends and I went last night for our monthly girls night and had the best time, thank you to our stellar server Matt who dealt with all of our shenanigans and gave great suggestions for us. We started with the squash blossoms of course, do not skip out on them they are still my absolute favorite squash blossoms I have ever had and that lemon sauce below it is perfection! We ended up sharing a pizza and pasta which was perfect for the 4 of us. Such a great spot and I love sitting by the window area when you first walk in. Will always be at the top of my list so I highly recommend.

Things I Like:- Happy Hour Tuesday to Friday from 4-6pm at the bar- Fried Squash Blossoms - probably one of my favorite items on the menu- Charred brussels sprouts + ivan's hot sauce - another favorite item. We order this every time we are here in recent years.- Cacio e pepe pizza - really flavorful, would definitely order again- short rib pappardelle - really can't go wrong with any of the pasta dishes, but this is my personal favorite. It's definitely gotten better over the years.- House made focaccia + whipped butter - another must order every time we are here- Tiramisu - great to share, a solid favorite of mine. I will purposely save room for this dessert - Service is always friendly and attentive - Amazing wine list - lots of old world selections. Probably one of my favorite places to get a bottle, hang out with an old friend, and just talk the night away.Things I Didn't Like:- Not much... Overall Rating: 10/10 Would definitely recommend!
Be the first to ReplyI will admit.
. I'm writing this review before even receiving the entrees I just ordered. BECAUSE efff the entrees I was SOLD immediately at the Lime with Tito's appetizer! IYKYK.. ask Matt (our fabulous server. Even though he cut me off of limes)Luckily, in the midst of my app consumption, the squash blossoms came out and blew my mind! Please do yourself a favor and order extra sauce on the side because . Carving into the Foccacia as I type.. looking promising! Anyways- 10/10 recommend! (See pics below of the lime Tito's app).
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food and excellent service.
Th is my first trip to San Diego and I'm off to an amazing start.
Be the first to ReplyBest pasta I've had in San Diego.
Order the Short Rib Parpadelle. That's it. The meat is incredibly tender and the flavors were through the roof. If there is the option, opt for the polenta board too. The octopus was average. I didn't feel like the fixings in the dish pair well. The only downside was the service. We sat at the seats near the entrance and it took 10-15 minutes for service.

Visited Cuchina Urbana on a solo night in San Diego and had the best meal of my trip. Located in the Gaslamp Quarter, Cuchina Urbana was fairly busy on a weeknight. But, happily, it wasn't too difficult to find street parking close by. They have plenty of outdoor seating if you choose, and the inside is open and spacious. The waitress was super friendly and helpful with suggestions. I enjoyed an asparagus and burrata appetizer that was amazingly refreshing, and a very good portion size to share! I also had the short rib pappardelle which was absolutely to die for, especially with some fresh grated Parmesan on top!I didn't save room for dessert, but the menu looked amazing. Can't wait to return on my next trip to San Diego!
Be the first to ReplyLegendary restaurant in Bankers Hill next to Balboa Park.
Outstanding, friendly service from Kevin. Front of house was also welcoming and provided a lovely large indoor table for our party of 5. We went family style and adored everything we ordered - the salad, rigatoni, and Milanese all stood out. Beautiful decor and fantastic experience!

Don't bother with Little Italy! Cucina Urbana has the best Italian food in San Diego. Cute location, plenty of indoor/outdoor seating, and some of the most delicious food I've ever had. The bucatini dish is to DIE for! Extensive cocktail/wine list, all very reasonably priced with fun happy hour deals. The best part about the Cucina experience is the service! I've never had a bad experience here as all the servers are extremely attentive and polite. I bring my partner here for every special occasion we can think of! Shoutout to Kevin, who brought us a complimentary glass of bubbles to celebrate her birthday, he's the best! Amazing experience and I would eat here every single day if I could!

Ashley was our server and she was prompt and friendly. Food is so fresh!!! Great vibe. Glad we found this spot on our staycation. Wish we lived closer.
Be the first to ReplyI think the first thing about this restaurant that needs to
I think the first thing about this restaurant that needs to be acknowledged is its layout of it. It is very welcoming, and the ambiance is great there. Lots of natural light and not loud which allows for conversation at the table. The appetizer we ordered (forgot to get a photo of it) was the Lamb Sausage, Potato gnocchi with herb pesto. The gnocchi was delicate and probably the best that I have ever had in my life. It was so refined and melted in my mouth. Also, as a certified sucker for pesto, it passed the rigorous standards that I have for it. Next, we decided to order the Short Rib pasta. The wide noodles tasted like they were made in-house because it was that good. The Short Rib was present but wasn't noteworthy. It felt apart which traditionally short rib should do but the sauce did not wow my tastebuds. It was not bad by any means, but it was average. First off, any resentment or judgment about pineapple being on pizza is childish. If you don't think that it belongs there, you'll mature and understand one day.So, as an advocate for Pineapple for pizza this was a must-order. Also, I have a soft spot for habaneros, so this was a no-hesitation order. I know that the title of the pizza may seem daunting to order but the jam on the pizza complimented the pepperoni and pineapple on it. The Habanero Jam was subtle and had a slow burn that was not overbearing by any measure. I would go back to this place and get this pizza again in a heartbeat. I would go back to this place again. I had a nice glass of Cabernet that tied the whole meal together. The pizza and gnocchi sold me in this establishment. If you are in San Diego looking for good Italian food this is worth checking out.
Be the first to ReplyStopped in for dinner on a weeknight without reservations
Stopped in for dinner on a weeknight without reservations and they were able to accommodate us within 10min. The food was great - shared the mushroom and goat cheese pizza with the corn agnolotti pasta entree among the two of us. Both dishes were great, but the pasta entree was the standout dish with its delightfully light filling and savory sauce. The interior is beautiful and makes for a great date spot.

I kept begging my husband to do a date night here because we've been on the hunt for good Italian food in SD. He was born and raised in an Italian family in New York where delicious Italian foods are everywhere. We must have came on an off night because everything except for the appetizers were horrible. We started with the focaccia with whipped butter and this was amazing! The focaccia came out warm, baked fresh, and the oil/butter bottom was exquisite. The giant meatball in polenta was also tasty. It was rich and flavorful. Now the pastas were disappointing to say the least. My bucatini Amatriciana was extremely overcooked. The bucatini was soggy and the sauce was watery! The guanciale (pork jowl) was all minced and nonexistent. How could a dish be messed up this bad? My husband's rigatoni bolognese had a better bite to the rigatoni but the sauce was also bland. The main pasta dishes took over 30 minutes to come out. Long after our appetizers were finished. Our server kept apologizing for the wait. It made me think they were behind on orders and just threw our pastas together half-assed. Also, since the dining room is below ground level, the echo was intense. It was very loud inside with the music and people talking over one another. Forget coming here for a nice date night. At least Extraordinary Desserts was close by and made my night better.

Our server Jason was a 10/10, he was what made our meal so great. The ambiance & interior is very modern + clean, but definitely gets crowded pretty quickly. I think they utilize all their space, which is why when it gets packed people congregate at the door without an area to sit & it gets crowded really quickly. Food is a 3/5. Everyone here is incredible, but the food I'd say is decent - as you can definitely get better Italian food nearby or in Little Italy. I say this because Italian food is supposed to be extremely flavorful & taste like you're eating a whole lotta carbs, but the food here is borderline bland. Pizza tasted almost like saltless sauce, & the dressing for all the dishes were not very well distributed in the sense that they had very little flavor, it was like sauce with added water. I still think the effort was there & the food still was good, just not GREAT.Our favorite dish was their special, it was a pork belly in mashed potato with plenty of flavor because of the sauce the pork belly was marinated in. We still had a great experience, but would we want to come back a second time? Maybe just for the ambiance and our server, but not much else impressed us too much.
Be the first to ReplyFood is absolutely amazing, the pizza especially.
Drinks are yummy and the service was very friendly and fast!
Be the first to ReplyThe food is 3 stars and the atmosphere is 5.
I would take a date here but I wouldn't go alone. The staff was also very respectful and friendly. Full disclosure I'm hard on chefs.
