Very overpriced for what you get. Pretentious and can't deliver on the food, which was mediocre at best. Only item I would recommend in the 5 tapas we ordered were the leeks which had a good combination of taste and texture. Stay away from the croquetas (absolutely awful, gooey and sickening). The Spanish tortilla was meh and kind of flavorless. Pan con Tomate lacked depth and was bland. The spreadable meat dish was good but was served with only 8 slices of bread cut so thin you couldn't spread anything on it. And we were charged for the extra bread we asked for. Finally sangria was absolutely terrible. No need to add hard alcohol to a good sangria. And it was bland and tasted watered down. While our waiter was friendly, there were long gaps between our orders and delivery of drinks (about 20 minutes). The only plus was that we ate outside and that was nice. There are many restaurants in DC with much better food and much better price/quality ratios. Avoid.

We arrived with a lot of illusion for a good Spaniard meal. Super well impressed with the decoration, music and ambiance in general. Wide and varied menu with great options. However, the flavor and quality of the food was mediocre, especially when you have lived and travel often to Spain. We felt everything was heartless and commercial. Great look - poor flavor. Waiters are pushy and tactless. Wine list is not impressive.

Ate here for a business dinner and found the waiter to be friendly, the food was excellent, the ambiance was nice, location right on the water. Excellent restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyMust visit. Do not miss it.
A delight! The paella, the blue crab tapas, the dessertsโฆ. Ufffff the best. The waiter who served us had excellent service, very smiling and very friendly, Between the kindness of the captain, the waiter and the food, everything is delightful! A wonderful experience

We decided on the spur of the moment to try this restaurant, a relative recommended, on the wharf after walking around seeing DC sights. Although we felt a little too casually dressed our waiter assured us we were fine, he said people come in, in shorts in the summer. It is pricey $$$$ but we were on vacation & treated ourselves. Loved the sangria, a carafe of course. In Other places it is often too sweet, this was perfect. Appetizer of Spanish bluefin tuna Carpaccio was sooo tender, we savored every bite. Then we enjoyed the seafood paella for 2. The atmosphere inside is very nice & it smelled delicious as well. Staff are very pleasant & checked on us but were not overbearing or rushing us. Best dinner out in a long time. We highly recommend

A celebration of Spanish seafood cuisine reins here. Del Mar is located in the trendy waterfront neighborhood of the Wharf District. The flavors were wonderful. I had the branzino with tasty oven roasted vegetables to complement my seafood entree. Staff was caring and wanted to make your dining experience enjoyable.
Be the first to ReplyWowโฆthis is expensive
The food is good, although the location and ambiance is great, however you will pay a pretty penny to eat here. I found it to be outrageously expensive and terrible value. In my opinion there are better restaurants at this price point and obviously cheaper options too. I could not recommend this place.
Be the first to ReplyAggressive Pushy Waiter
Nicely designed restaurant and good but very expensive food. My primary complaint was that we left feeling very uncomfortable after spending over $200 for three (including kid), because the waiter constantly and aggressively pushed alcohol and main courses, when we were happy to select a range of different tapas from the menu. I personally would not recommend it.

We had a disappointing 20th anniversary evening elsewhere on the Wharf until popping into Del Mar at the last minute - and a big thank you to them for saving the night! We had no reservation, but the gracious and welcoming Maitre D' ushered over to comfy seats at the bar. It's a pretty cool retro Rat-Pack vibe at the bar. Matt was our bartender and he took it upon himself to cheer us up. He offered to make us some custom cocktail creations, and they were like beautiful and delicious works of art. We also ordered one slice of their Chocolate Saffron Cake to share, which was delivered with a flourish and an extra pot of hot fudge. SO SO SO good! We'll be returning to Del Mar to do the full dinner experience soon, but in the meantime will have nothing but fond memories of how they helped ensure our 20th wedding anniversary wasn't our last!

Amazing dinning experience. Great food, wine, and service. Every dish was spectacular. Truly something to experience. Highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing overall dining experience
Restaurant Week is a good time to try out upscale restaurants such as Del Mar. It has a fairly typical attractive and modern interior - high ceilings, bright and artsy maritime decor, big open kitchen in back, large sparkling bar island in the middle, and colorful flowery uniforms for the staff. Not much of a view of the waterfront however as the windows in the terrace area are high up and the upstairs section not always open. The RW menu is interesting but rather limited. Basically the dishes you'd want to order will have a high supplemental charge. We had the potato soup, salad, tuna crudo, branzino and soft serve ice cream for dessert. The food is excellent in taste and presentation. The service however is spotty. Ordered a beer and had to ask for it three times before it finally came when we were halfway through the main course. As for seating options the row of two tops are too close together and highly undesirable. While we were there we saw several parties of 2 balk at being seated there and demanded to move (and did since there were plenty of other tables available). Kind of ruins the mood when you have to put up a fight in order not to be automatically given the worst table in the dining room. After all you are not at some roadside shack but easily paying $100+ for two for lunch so there are expectations to be met - and Del Mar definitely fell short on the overall dining experience.
Be the first to ReplyFine dining / exquisite details
Starting with the location, the Wharf in DC is the gastronomic epicenter. This restaurant stands out on the boardwalk, I had an amazing experience from the moment I walked in. The decor is very pleasing, the staff is very courteous and the food is exquisite. I sat on one of the private dining rooms on the 2nd floor, a very elegant and classy space. From the silverware, glasses and plates, to the restrooms, you will find great taste and esthetics. We ordered the cheese plate which was delicious (is not a an appetizer to share because itโs a very small serving), main dish was the branzino with a side of Brussel sprouts was to die for. My friend had the salmon with lentejas (chick peas) and said it was delicious. Our server was Michelle G. who seems to have a solid experience in The hospitality industry, she provided great recommendations and extraordinary service. Sheโs friendly and very professional. If you travel to DC and would like a Michelin Star dining experience, this place is highly recommended.
Be the first to ReplyI wasn't impressed -- I rarely write reviews -- but this place is out and out bad
My wife took me to this place to celebrate my 60-th anniversary. I've traveled in Spain a bit and am familiar with Spanish food. As a plus, the restaurant itself is very nice. It's not noisy. The tables aren't too close together. The service is very good. It was cold out -- the place would be nice to frequent in warm weather (if they get a new chef). If that's what floats your boat, then this is the place for you. A server wiped off our table a total of four times during the meal. But I go out to eat primarily for the food -- and this is where this place loses me. I don't know how so many people give it raving reviews. Freakin' Awesome? Do you frequent Appleby's? PULPO A LA PLANCHA -- $30 -- Galician Style Octopus, Smoked Potato, Spiced Black Garlic Sauce -- The Octopus was so tough and chewy, I couldn't cut it with the provided butter knife. I love octopus, but this was awful. Maybe the 'chef' ought to take a road trip up to Baltimore to the Greek place Samos to learn how to cook it. PAN CON TOMATE -- $15 -- Catalan Crisp Bread, Toamtoes, Garlic, Extra Virgin Olive Oil -- Add Jamon Serrano Mangalitsa 10 -- This was toast with what tasted like Ragu canned tomato sauce on it. They forgot to mention a couple olives also adorn this master piece -- which made it inedible for my wife. Perhaps i should have spent the extra $10 to have 1/100 of an ounce of hamon added. PESCADO Y MARISCOS -- $100 for 2 | $200 for 4 -- Maine Lobster, Prawn, PEI Mussels, Monkfish, Calamari --- It came with 2 huge shrimp, and when pulled from the pan, revealed very little else. The pictures from the website must have been taken in better times when seafood was cheaper and more plentiful. Would it really cost that much to add a few extra mussels and clams? The rice was overly spiced, and over cooked. A good bit of it was stuck to the bottom of the pan. Nothing like paying $100 for a pan of over cooked rice. The wine -- The sommelier came to the table as I was looking at the wine list. I asked if they had a dry rose. He got us one. It was your typical $12 grocery store bottle of wine for $80 -- but that's dining in the U.S. for you. Can't really criticize Del Mar for taking part marking up bottle of wine by 10X. I wish he'd just been honest and said no and offered up a decent white wine. OK, its in DC, so you pay $40 (with tip) to get parking. So with the cocktails (meh) and tip, we were closing in on $400 for the night. What a let down for my 60-th birthday. And my poor wife, who picked this place out, is feeling bad about such a lousy meal when its not her fault.
Be the first to ReplyPoor dining experience!
Poor dining experience. Should not serve in Terrazza room in winter, do not have adequate heating. Food was good, but menu and wine pricing were very high. Will not go back.

Loved the place . Fab decor, good food and more importantly excellent service !!. Was a great experience. They have a quite an elaborate cocktail and wine menu go gobsling with the food.
Be the first to ReplyWe went to Del Mar based on reviews, but donโt believe that theyโre real. The Paella was tasteless. Not worth one bit.
Big Disappointment! Very expensive. Terrible food. Tasteless paella. Misleading reviews. The only positive is a very nice ambiance, although noise.

We were prepared to host our friends, but they bailed out in the last moment. We went anyway. Great location in the Wharf facing the Washington Channel (better in the summer). The inside is spectacular. The staff is good, but some need to be trained more on details. Food: - excellent grilled octopus with black ink. Pan de tomate was great. Crystal bread - very interesting. I never tried anything like that. Finally, paella - crab, mussels, lobster and enormous langostinos perfectly made. My only criticism is about rice - not enough of it, a bit too salty, too moist and not enough socarratti.
Be the first to ReplyNice ambiance
This restaurant offers authentic Spanish dishes in a sophisticated manner. The ham and truffle balls are out of this world, but is only three come in a serving. The cheese platter comes with three slices and a small piece of bread. It is a pricey restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyGreat service for a birthday celebration
Great service and great food. Wine list available. Iโm one who enjoys a great restaurant but the only issue is I found the prices beyond the normal range. Pricey Tapas will get you every time.
Be the first to ReplyInwill never go there again
Crazy over priced and not worth going for those prices and on top of it they charge you $35 to valet and they do not validate. Spoke to manager who was absolutely useless.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful, flavorful, slightly gimmicky
We reserved a terrace seat, but when we got there, it was closed for a private event (they had tried to call). However, they were very kind and seated us at a table outside. It was very busy with all the passersby, and with music from the resto, it was noisy (for me). But overall, very nice atmosphere and people watching. Great wait staff, very attentive. An amuse- bouche (very flavorful) and a slice of bread (not as great) with tomatoes and olives were a sweet little surprise, and the wine list was nice. The food was excellent, with the exception of the bread mentioned earlier, and the presentation was terrific. The gimmicky part was the drink my spouse ordered (Angel Azul, see the pitcher!) but we were enthralled! Pricey place to eat, but worth it in my opinion. I'd love to sit upstairs at the terrace sometime.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent, excellent meal
My wife and I enjoyed a delicious meal at one of Del Mar's outdoor tables on a recent Saturday night. Please do yourself a favor and try one (or two) of their great cocktails as it will certainly kick off the night on the right note. From there, we enjoyed several small plates (seafood) for our appetizers and then shared paella for two for our main. Service was great, food was excellent and the energy and vibe of the wharf was the perfect accompaniment.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent place to eat or have a drink!
This was the highlight of my dining experience this time in DC, the place where the restaurant is located is fairly new, its The Wharf, the restaurant itself is extremely elegant, the food was amazing and we had our own private section/room as we were more than 50 people (it was a business lunch) but it was really great!! the sea food Paella is to die for!! Yummmmy
Be the first to ReplyService Lacking
The service is not commensurate with the price point of this restaurant! Had to wait a LONG time before being greeted by our server. Then had to summon him each time we needed anything. Had to flag him down to order a glass of wine, not once, but twice!! Then he overcharged us. Not a great experience. Food was good, but overpriced!
Be the first to ReplySurprisingly mediocre.
Experience not as expected from Fabio restaurant. Upon seating chair covered in food & waited 10 min for menu. Food good
