Taco in Chicago
Hi there
From my impression the Food from south of our border is becoming more and more popular, a simple observation, and that is fine it’s delicious and nutritious.
This review is mainly about DOS URBAN CANTINA but it will include a comparison with two other Taquerias that I frequented this time.
So Ándale
As you enter the kitchen is in front of you and you can choose to sit along the bar or along the wall facing the bar, at the hour I arrived I Chad the choice of the bar and so I did.
The restaurant is specious is clean and safe to sit-in with the proper mesures for social distancing.
The bartender Dylan friendly, drops the menue and immediately brings a pitcher of water, asks me what do I drink I choose. Shoot of Herradura Anejo ( apparently in the 10 most drinkable Tequila now, I learned about it From another place I like Broken English in the loop)
An observation and as I said comparison to other establishments I frequented.
The shot of Tequila was served in a glass and the water in a plastic cup ( I guess do to the pandemic, or no dishwasher at the time of visit) both Broken English and Cruz Blanca serve water or water from glass.
Along the food I chooses ( patience ) I chosen top shelf tequila margarita( their named the margarita, and I had a craving, besides what else goes with Tacos) very smooth to bad it was in a plastic cup.
The food
Guacamole with chips as a starter :
A nice amount of Guacamole with onion and cilantro on the top, fresh avocado delicious again served in plastic, guys I’m not in a picnic, ample nachos fresh and crispy.
Now here it comes Neither Broken English or Cruz Blanca come close to this guacamole, although it was served in small clay dish in both places it was crowded with unnecessary pickled veggies like radish and so on, the avocado didn’t do such an impression neither taste or freshness.
This is to say plastic dish or not when it’s fresh it’s good never mind how it’s served.
Tacos
They have a choice of six types I had 3 types:
Fish
Chicken
Carne Asada, all 3 are recommended at any time of the day especially when you are hungry.
I will not go deep over ingredients, I’m not a food critic and not familiar with all the jargon etc,
All I have to say the fish taco was excellent ( I’m a carne asada aficionado) This taco is to die for.
So it’s my first choice, success.
Than I moved to the Carne asada well it had black beans in it and to my opinion it’s to much I love black beans and it’s always preferred on pinto beans but not in a taco as a side yes. It fills you to much.
The meat was not so warm and a little to dry but tasty I will ask for it but ask them not to over do it and next time I will ask it just with cilantro and onion my preferred choice.
At Broken English I always ask it only with cilantro and onion, this time it was a little over done they are in the last place regarding the Carne Asada tacos.
Cruz Blanca serves the tacos like fajitas style and it’s fun to make your own tacos on the table, I guess it’s a question of taste.
Their meat was the best in all the 3 places the serve the tacos with Spring onions and poblano peppers that they grilled.
So Cruz Blanca first place, Dos Urban Cantina second & Broken English third as it goes for Carne Asada.
As for the third kind of taco at Dos Urban Cantina, it was chicken , the chicken melted in the mouth it had jalapeño peppers in it and a sauce that I don’t remember now but all fell in place one more success, order it.
At Dos Urban Cantina Fish, chicken and than Carne Asada.
An observation Mexican food is a hip now or always was who cares THE PRICES FOR THE INGREDIENTS YOU SERVE IS TO HIGH !
In general the prices are high for this food in all 3 places.
Although I received a good explanation as why the 20% is included and that I don’t have to pay it, know one thing rewarding or leaving a tip for good service is a choice you don’t add it to the bill, whatever the reason is.
I left it there do to the service, and the reason of it, but it’s a little embarrassing to refuse when it’s presented like this and the service was fast and good.
Any how enjoy and eat tacos they health add Tequila !
Everyone was very Happy
It's first important to note that Dos Urban is NOT Mexican food. It IS primarily tapas inspired by Mexican dishes. We had a group of 7 who had a wide variety of plates from including smoked pepita & almond enchilada, charred broccoli & pork chorizo, and sweet corn tamal. It is pricey in an up and coming part of North Chicago.
Be the first to ReplyA Cut Above
The menu is designed to share. We had 10 people stretched out down a long table. Our hostess of the group ordered many dishes, some in multiples & they were delivered to the table. All of the dishes were excellent, flavors refined and pleasing. some items had a bit of spice, but none was overwhelming. You may recognize some of the menu terms from other Mexican restaurants but the flavors are a cut above.
The owners previously worked for Rick Bayless & Charlie Trotter, two well known Chicago restaurateurs, they learned their lessons well. they've developed a great restaurant and dining experience.
Don't forget dessert. The chocolate cake & date pudding are superb.
LOVE this place!
This is an update to a previous review of Dos -- My husband and I have eaten here approximately 20 times. We love the food, people, drinks and atmosphere. If. you can get the halibut, that would be my #1 recommendation. The fish that comes out is always perfect! Chef Brian is incredibly creative and spot on! My husband and I are always asking him for his recommendations and they don't disappoint! We have brought family and friends with us and they have all enjoyed Dos! They have a fantastic happy hour too! The location is easy to reach from the California blue line L stop (8 min walk)- or there is street parking on Armitage if you drive.
Be the first to ReplyStill going strong but need a bit of change
This was my third visit to the property, each time has been a different experience.
The food has not been the issue- really terrific. Seems like the bar and its offerings need a bit of evaluation. A draft Marguerita is $10-$5 at happy hour Tuesday-Friday which is about what it's worth.$3 for a mescal float (hum). So then you switch to a delicious handcrafted Marguerita at $16. Originally everything was great and so was the value At $90 pp including 3 cocktails I might expect a bit more on the. bar side of prep and value.
Intimate evening
Four of us had a delicious time at this restaurant featuring Mexican regional dishes. We started with fantastic mussels, roasted cauliflower with crema sauce and the beet salad all to share.
The entrees had an assortment of delicate sauces that did not overwhelm the food: chicken tacos, scallops, crispy stuffed chili’s and trout.
Best of all the margaritas! Dessert was figgy pudding my favorite even though the chocolate cake is to die for and my husband had a wonderful light flan.
Although the restaurant has a large dining room it was cozy enough to sit and chat with old friends without the shouting! It was a great evening.
Refined and creative latin fare
The portions are not large, but they are really delicious. The sauces are unique, and dishes are carefully prepared. The mussels came with a savory brown sauce, and the sweet corn tamal came with a tomato salsa that was perfect for the delicate texture of the tamal. The masa ricotta dumplings were fantastic, made with spaghetti squash, house cured pancetta, chile pasado sauce. The Beso de Angel dessert had hibiscus ice cream and a crumble bottom...very creative and satisfying. The place is modern and yet inviting, and the staff is welcoming, especially our server, Kiah.

Very cool place on W. Armitage - excellent drinks. Tried lots of dishes - pork, chicken tacos, salsa and hummus - all was very good!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Mexican Food
Great surprise. We really had fun with my family trying 50% of the dishes of the menu. We shared, we compared, we argued. Margarita and Micheladas were like in Mexico. Bib gourmant from the Michelin guide is well deserved!

Delicious food with a twist on classic Mexican cuisine, keep in mind that the plates are to share sort of a tapas experience. There are some plates that are huge and 1 is more than enough - ask you waiter before you order.
