Cosy high-end sushi escape.
Small upscale Japanese restaurant with very limited seating. Full mostly of visiting Japanese tourists from the Ham Yard hotel across the street. Set lunch menus and a la carte available. Menu options are quite limited and fresh, so check the season menu. Bento boxes are fun and beautifully presented. No real ‘wow’ moments with the food (with the exception of their vegetarian miso soup) but restaurant team are friendly and there is a calm and lovely escape from the Soho/West End hustle.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful sashimi…
From walking in, the chefs greeting you, you feel how cosy it is; with only around sixteen seats, you feel treated that you have a place. Being shown to our table, we were given our menus, and whilst the menu is small you by no means feel limited. We went for the 3 course omakase; for us, the perfect amount of food. The first course, the fish in egg roll, with spicy mayo, highlighted the fish, but married it to other flavours without it being overpowering. By looks alone I was very impressed. The second course - to me - was the star of the show. Our tray with bites from salads, to sashimi, to deep fried elements, we’re exceptional. The salads small but each concentrating on key flavours; the sashimi high quality, cut to perfection - notable mention goes to the toro; the deep fried elements, the rice cakes and croquets were texturally wonderful and had rich deep flavours. The soup after, to me, was confusing. A wonderful potato and dashi soup but felt marred by sharp elements of lemon pulp. Finally, we had what we thought might be the star of the show. For our mains we all ordered the Wagyu; however, I was slightly underwhelmed. Served on a hot stone, I just left thinking I’ve had better Wagyu. That wasn’t to say it was good - but compared to the rest of the meal? I would have stuck with fish. That said, it came with a wonderful salad and dressing, rice cooked with mushrooms cooked to perfection, and charred vegetables. I left dreaming of the fish, but the meat? Not so much.
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding — adding to my list of best London restaurants
We paired the tasting menu with a nice French Chablis. Outstanding! The sampling was delicious, artistically presented, harmonious, and left us wanting more. The friendly staff were attentive and took time to describe the dishes. The main was a mix of black cod and wagyu beef served on a hot stone — perfectly prepared and astonishingly good. We finished with a wonderful dessert. Put it on my favorite list of London restaurants.
Be the first to ReplyTruly outstanding
This remains the most outstanding Japanese restaurant which my wife and I have visited. The food is perfectly prepared and the set menu which we chose was ideally balanced. The service was both discreet and attentive. I could not recommend it more highly.
Be the first to Replypoor service and rather disappointing experience
Booked Engawa for my wife’s birthday dinner. We both really like Omakase and have tried various restaurants in London and also visited Japan for 3 weeks prior to the pandemic so we’ve had some great authentic Omakase experiences in the past. Our favourite Omakase restaurant in London is Kikuchi which we’ve visited plenty of times but unfortunately it was shut at the time for holiday. Read some reviews about Engawa so decided to book it instead. We had a table booked for 7pm and were seated promptly and given menus. We both knew we’d go for the 5 course Omakase with the sake pairing and upon ordering we were asked about allergies. They advised that the dessert contains nuts and when asked if they can swap it for something else or give my wife a nut free dessert that this was not an option, the restaurant only had one dessert on the menu and aren’t able to do anything else. We were disappointed to be told that they couldn’t accommodate a very common allergy so it wasn’t a great start. My wife therefore had to go for the 3 course Omakase menu. The sashimi was great and some of the side dishes were well prepared. However, the rice used for nigiri and the small tomato mozzarella katsu dish was genuinely unpleasant (and that’s a nice way of saying it!). It was extremely mushy, all stuck together and really claggy, it’s the sort of rice you sometimes get from prepared sushi rolls at wasabi or itsu. My wife is Asian and has been eating rice her whole life, I myself eat a lot of sushi and it was genuinely some of the worst rice I’ve had. The squid nigiri was really poorly prepared, it was so tough and rubbery, clearly had not been tenderised and you’d have to spend some time chewing it. We’ve had squid nigiri many times and it’s usually lovely but it was really was not great at Engawa. The sake pairing was however lovely and we enjoyed this very much. When my dessert arrived (which I could have but not my wife due to her allergy) it was a nice touch they added a candle. However as it was her birthday and not mine it was just a bit unfortunate. The waitress said that although my wife can’t eat the dessert, at least she can blow out the candle which seemed like an odd comment to make but I guess she wanted to lighten the mood. When she served it, it was 8:25 and she informed us that she needed the table back in 5 minutes. I was surprised and asked if that meant I had 5 minutes to eat my dessert and then had to leave and her response was yes. Now I understand that there are reservations made, however, surely they could have told us this when we arrived and also planned the food to come out earlier and not serve dessert 5 minutes prior to the next booking? I was appalled by this to be honest, we’ve been at the restaurant for less than 1.5 hours and spent £400 which was frankly a really disappointing and bad dining experience. Service was poor due to the inability to accommodate for a nut allergy which frankly isn’t uncommon and them telling us we had to leave when dessert was served. Also the food certainly did not match the price tag, I am genuinely shocked by how poor the overall experience was and would certainly not go back or recommend it to anyone. If you want a great Omakase experience, you don’t find this at Engawa.
Be the first to ReplySome very good food, others disappointed
Restaurant is in a nice area and has stylish, minimalist decor, with the staff being friendly and helpful. The meal started out great with a varied and sumptuous bento box with excellent small bites. The second course of somen noodles then started to disappoint where the broth was practically flavourless and shiitake mushrooms tasted raw. There was a slight improvement in the main course but the wagyu did not have much flavour. The plating decisions seemed off as they served miso soup in a basic white coffee cup you’d see in a canteen, an odd contrast to the beautiful wooden bento box of the first course. This isn’t a cheap set menu and 2 of the 3 disappointed. Not sure I’d return as the main draw of wagyu did not live up to expectations.
Be the first to ReplyA delicious and memorable Japanese meal
Had a great birthday dinner here with a friend! We tried to Omakase 3 course meal, all dishes that involve colour and taste. The seating area inside is limited but still comfortable. Service was very friendly as well. I'd come here again to try more dishes, a great place to take family and good friends for a memorable meal.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing experience!
Staying in London for a couple of nights and on our last night we went to Engawa after I searched on Google for sushi places in London months previous.
Everything about the meal was great! 2 course appetiser was incredible and I had the 9 piece sushi for main and it was lovely! My partner had the Wagyu beef for main and he loved it.
The service was on point and would highly recommend a visit!
Wonderful Japanese dining experience
The food and service were excellent. We had the 3 course Omakase menu. We arrived a little late at 1740 but they held our table and were still able to enjoy our meal and make it to the theatre after, due to there good service.
There was such a big selection of different dishes, it made a perfect choice for our wedding anniversary. The yuzu yuzu cocktail was delicious and they had a great selection of sake.
The restaurant is quite small and there is not not a huge amount of space at the table but it didn't really detract from our wonderful dining experience.
Most the tables were for 2 people so it would be a great place for a romantic date night or as a pretheatre meal. 5stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Family lunch gathering
Great lunch experience, had so much fun and food was good.
Huge thanks to Adrian, the head chef and waiters for the exceptional service.
Best bento outside of Japan - but terrible front of house.
We went for a belated birthday celebration, and were really looking forward to the occasion. It was a lunchtime booking, which specified 90 minutes per booking - understandable as it’s a tiny restaurant. The two of us ordered Wagyu Bento, drinks and dessert. The food was absolutely outstanding - the best we’ve had outside of Japan.
Minutes after we finished dessert - 45 minutes into the booking - the front of house person came over and asked if we’d like the bill as the next booking was waiting for our table. It made us feel incredibly uncomfortable and actually quite embarrassed, as if we’d outstayed our welcome. There were other tables (who had been seated before us) who were still eating, so I’m not quite sure why we were spoken to in this way.
The waiter and waitress were so friendly and accommodating, so I regret that this one man let them down. It has put us off recommending the restaurant when friends have asked, or returning ourselves. Shame, since the food is wonderful.
Fabulous food!
I was persuaded by some amazing photos on Instagram - I am a sucker for an Insta opp! On that front it didn’t disappoint. We had the sea bass ceviche (not enough fish), the tuna and sea urchin crepe (fabulous) and the box of 14 (very special). We really enjoyed all the different tastes & textures.
I also enjoyed the plum cocktails.
Four stars because it’s over-priced, the enormous service charge is not justifiable, and the restaurant is very cramped. But none of that will stop me from going back - and I can’t wait!
Poor Service/Disappointing
It was very poor service and the food was not good apart from the Wagyu Beef dish either.
Sushi came before the starter so we asked to have “the starter first ”.
They agreed to serve the Sushi after the starter but they didn’t make new Sushi and they served a bit of dried sushi which they kept in the kitchen for more than 20mins.
I couldn’t see any Japanese staff in the restaurant when I was there (sat/dinner time)
So I understand they may not know how important serving “Fresh Sushi”.
It was a very dissatisfied experience overall.
I hope…. don’t take “This is a typical Japanese food and service” from people who had bad experiences here.
Horrible customer experience
The senior manager (Japanese lady) was very rude and we felt that she wanted to rush everything. Waiter always looked at your table which was very uncomfortable. Overall unsatisfied, horrible and disappointed experience.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious Japanese food in Soho
Well...let's see! If you're into Japanese food, that's the place, if you're into quality, you've come to the right place, if you're into high-end cosy atmosphere and to experience a test of Japan and wagyu beef, Engawa is your stop.
We booked the place in early December for a girls night out. We've been looked after by Adrian. What an amazing night we've had. I personally tried the assorted sashimi selection and the Saikyo Black Cod. Delicious! Then the drinks pairing recommended were stunning, making it an exquisite experience overall. We'll make the place one our favourite places when in Soho. I highly recommend.
Poor Service and weak food.
Was here for a birthday despite telling the restaurant that it was for a birthday they made no special attempt to accommodate this. Waiter and waitress were indifferent and seemed to just be in a rush all the time with no attempt to offer any intimate service. Food was bland and mediocre for the price - will not be coming back everything seems rushed .
Be the first to ReplyOpposite of Omotenashi
From the obviously stressed and rude waiter to filthy cushions this place does not remind you of Japan. To add insult to the injury they flatly rejected to accommodate the most basic request outside their lunch menu such as cutting the sashimi just a little differently and putting it on some sushi rice. Their excuse: we are too busy! Had to settle for the sea urchin which was of course stale. Avoid.
