Fun, West Village Italian
Extra Virgin Cute, West Village Italian place with good food and service. Nice bartender, with limited bar options, but good cocktails. The frito misto and mozzarella appetizers were good. The cod, salmon and fish composed entrees were fresh and good. They accommodate substitutions with no attitude. The restaurant was very crowded, yet, they were attentive. Well located on West 4th street. This is a fun little spot to meet friends for dinner.

Stumbled across this restaurant while strolling round the west village on a visit to NYC from the UK. Was a lovely sunny October afternoon so asked for a table outside. Great atmosphere, was nice to sit & chill. Food and drink delicious - highly recommend the hanger steak.. free wifi..
Be the first to ReplyCharming ambience and good pasta
We sat outdoors on the street which was lovely and had great views of the streets of West Village. However, the seating was a bit cramped. Our Negronis were excellent and I was a fan of the lobster pasta โ it tasted very fresh and I loved the summer vegetables. However, the actual chunks of lobster were tiny, and the dish was honestly a bit overpriced for what we got.
Be the first to Reply20% TIP ADDED PLUS ASK FOR MORE TIP ON CHECK!
This restaurant automatically adds a 20% gratuity to your check even if the service is terrible PLUS they leave space on the check for an additional gratuity. If you are not paying attention you will double tip. AND they do not inform their customers so be aware of this. Maybe this is why the waitress never came back and asked if we needed anything. You will have to get up and go inside to ask for another drink. The tables are so squeezed together you will be very very uncomfortable and the chairs sit half in the curb and half off. It's terrible! Food is only okay and def not worth the money in my opinion. Music is horrible and deafening which must be terrible for the neighborhood residents trying to enjoy the peace of their own homes. But who cares about them, right??? Not a nice experience.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent dining venue in NYC
My wife and I ate here on Saturday 28 May, the last night of our visit to NYC from the UK . From the charming and elegant manageress to the very friendly and helpful waiter John plus great food and wine this was our favourite dining venue during our 6 night stay in this great city. We would return if we are lucky enough to come here again. A lovely atmosphere too in its Greenwich,West Village location
Be the first to ReplyTerrible Management
I'd like to start by saying I reached out to Extra Virgin over 3 weeks ago directly to discuss my concerns, rather than leaving a review, but never heard back.
I've lived in NYC for ~8 years and have never had an experience as terrible as this one. I had been at Extra Virgin twice before this time, several years ago. One time it was great and the other the service was terrible. Since so much time had passed, I wanted to give it another shot.
We were seated 20 min. after our reservation (which is understandable given it was a Sat. night but no apology). When seated, the bar was so backed up that it took us over 30 minutes to get our drinks and place our order. For an 815 reservation, we did not eat until after 10. As we were waiting for our drinks, I went up to the Manager at the front to inform him of how long we had waited to be seated, to get water, bread and cocktails and asked him if he could check on the status. Our drinks happened to come while I was speaking to him and the Manager said to me "well, your drinks are there now" and stormed off without apology or concern and acted like I was bothering him. It was very hostile and extremely rude. I had never experienced that type of poor customer service in NYC - not at a fine dining place and not at a dive bar. He then proceeded to tell me I was a terrible customer. I have never been treated like that by anyone, let alone the MANAGER.
I will say our waiter was super personable and clearly committed to making sure we had a great experience He was fantastic and it was very clear that the delays were out of his control. If Extra Virgin employed Managers with the personality of our kind waiter, it would be an excellent place.
The food is decent at this restaurant, but certainly not nearly good enough to warrant being berated by the Manager. Watch out for the guy in the vest! I will not be back and I will share this experience with my network in the West Village.
Think twice about eating here
I live quite nearby this restaurant and my husband and I decided to try it this evening as something different. The waitstaff were very nice and the outdoor seating was just fine, though the music was stupidly loud. We started with frito misto, which was very good, and we both had decent cocktails. The trouble started with our entrees which were both tasteless. My husband's chicken was on a bed of the most unseasoned and bland sweet pea risotto and his chicken was almost aggressively overcooked, the thigh being even drier than the rest of it. I ordered the seared tuna which came to the table absolutely stone cold. The tuna was cold, the whipped potatoes were cold, the accompanying few brussel sprouts were lukewarm. The tuna itself was rare, the way I like it and had ordered it, but it was like eating cold shoe leather. But the kicker was when the bill came, they had added on a 20% tip without telling us...on a table of two. This is NOT New York protocol for a restaurant, and if you weren't paying attention you would have tipped again. When we talked with the maitre'd about it he was super defensive. Instead of wanting to know what was wrong with our dinners, he gave us a patronizing lecture about how HE thought, during the pandemic, that it was important to make sure essential workers were paid properly--making an assumption that New Yorkers were somehow not aware of this and would not tip appropriately. So, he managed to insult us as opposed to engaging in a dialogue. And then he said that, if we insisted, he would remove the tip and so we asked him to do that. We, of course, left a 20% tip as we always do, regardless of service, because we know that restauranteurs don't pay their staff livable wages. But it was OUR choice to leave that much of a tip, not the owner's choice. This review will, I'm sure, not change the popularity of this place and that was implicit in the way the maitre'd treated us. He knew that we didn't matter one iota in the success of the business and let us know that. But I just want anyone out there who has ANY interest in good food at a particular price point to know that this is a place to be avoided. Too bad--as neighbors, we were hoping for a new regular place!
Be the first to ReplyA lovely al fresco dinner on a relatively quiet Village street
My wife, daughter and I enjoyed our first restaurant meal in ages. Despite the fact that only 2 of the three of us arrived early, we were seated immediately; our waiter was charming and helpful. He didn't scowl when we ordered non-alcoholic beverages (impact on tip!).
The pumpkin risotto and the goat cheese salad were both delicious (and the latter was big enough for the three of us). The hanger steak (with fries) was tasty and ample.
The only disappointment were the shrimp tacos - not only were they "off brand" in this Euro-Italian place (they specialize in pastas), but the spicy, tasty salsa did not impart any flavor at all to the shrimp (which must have been added at the last minute). While there were only two tacos (it was a starter), the number of shrimp and amount of salsa was ample.
Oh, the Boylan ginger beer? While local (Brooklyn), it was very disappointing; I favor Fever Tree.
Bottom line: we'd go again.
Sad. Just so very sad
This was always one of my favorite village restaurants. Unfortunately this meal was wrong food terrible service and huge price. Wish I could have sent the food back to the kitchen but the server never showed up again after taking our order.
Be the first to ReplyNightmare dinner
Hello, I am still in shock about yesterday dinner. The 3 of us girls met there. One of my friend ordered the fish, the second one the raviolis - specifying she has a big allergy to carrots. I ordered the truffle fusilli. My order came first. There was no truffle of any kind nor any flavor of truffle (I asked my friends to try and they agreed). These were flat butter fusilli. Then my friend received the raviolis. There was carrots in the ravioli!!!! So we had to call again the waitress. By that time we are starving and the fish was not out again. So itโs almost having dinner at three different instances. After the dinner the bill came and to my surprise they had added 20% tip!!! Worst experience ever. And the food is tasteless. Wines good though
Be the first to ReplyGood for brunch
Visited Extra Virgin with 2 friends for brunch. Highly suggest you make a reservation as the place was full!
Service was prompt and friendly... we had the turkey burger and chorizo omlette. The portions were large and the food was good but not amazing. My fave thing was the pomegranate martini!
Excellent Pasta
Lobster Ravioli and the Butternut Squash Ravioli are the best in th city. The location is very cool, small restaurant, crowded, but very affordable and great food
Be the first to ReplyNot the "Special" experience it once was..
Very disappointed in recent lunch. Service was poor and food was uneventful for the price. If you like a sleepy neighborhood location this is def that! Unfortunately the menu looks good and the food doesnt live up to the price point. Maybe dinner is better?

Love having brunch here every time Iโm visiting NYC. Always very tasty and portions are pretty big so sharing entrees is great here. Perfect location in the village where you can sit outside and people watch on a nice day. Cozy inside and excellent service all the time.
The French toast is always a must for brunch!! Good drinks too and friendly staff keeps me coming back.
