Another Memorable Anniversary Meal
It seems that the greater the reputation of a restaurant, the greater the need for some to find fault, any fault. Thankfully, I was able to negotiate entering the premises without any mishap unlike another reviewer.. Sometimes you have to take responsibility for your own clumsiness. My wife and I attended for our 42nd wedding anniversary. We had wonderful food and wonderful service and were hosted by Carlo Grossi who was most affable. We had ample time to enjoy our ( sumptuous and generous) meals and the atmosphere of this venerable establishment. We had ample time to reflect and recall the many anniversary meals we had shared so far and this was certainly one of the highlights. Thank you Florentino for a memorable outing and the best tiramisu in Melbourne.

Two chef hats and most certainly well deserved. There is so much to like about Grossi Florentino. The menu is exciting with every dish served undoubtedly with the love generations have put in to the recipes. Modernly romantic and oozing so much passion you feel like you are nonnas prized guest! We had a fantastic evening and absolutely recommend ๐ฅฐ

The first thing I will say is that upon entry, you need to be warned that there is a step inside the door. I wasn't warned, and only for the fact a table stopped my falls, I would have fallen head over heels. I jarred my shoulder, but at no time did the door person or owner asked if I was OK. They seriously need to place a warning sign on that door. They do not offer ala carte. You now have a choice of two or three courses. We chose the three courses. For the first course, I chose the duck liver pate, and my friend chose scallops. The duck liver pate was disgusting, and I barely had two bites. I told the waiter. He apologised and offered another first course. I declined, and he said he'll give us one free dessert. The pasta course (Paccheri, Salsiccia, Sausage, Cavalo Nero, White Wine) was brilliant. Well seasoned and tasty. I could have had a second serving. We both had the scotch fillet (medium and medium-rare). As a side, we ordered the Potatoes, Rosemary, Garlic. Our steaks arrived, but the potatoes were nowhere to be seen. We waited a couple of minutes and called the server, who said they'd be there shortly. Side dishes need to come at the same time as the main. I had my steak as medium, but it was more medium-well. Wasn't happy but it was edible. Pretty ordinary. At the beginning, I asked for the wine list, which is a 60+ page binder. I thought a burgundy would be good, but at $2,500, a bottle that was a no. I looked at a merlot, and they were priced at $350 or more per bottle. We finally found an $80 red blend. The waiter was excellent, but what let thing down was the servers. They need to be on the ball rather than lacklustre. All up, it cost $400 for four courses, two cocktails, and a bottle of wine was reasonable. We'll definitely be back, but the servers need to be better.

This is our most favourite restaurant. We got married upstairs a couple of years ago. And we go back to the restaurant downstairs every year to celebrate. My family have been going to Florentino for years. Itโs lovely for my wife and I to continue this tradition.
Be the first to ReplyA tragic charade
I've eaten at Florentino since the 1980's. For many years I worked minutes away and had lunch there every day. It was one of my favourite places to dine After more than ten years away from Melbourne, last night my wife and I went there for dinner. Our starter was calamari and potato. It was 90% potato slivers with a scattering of little bits of dry calamari. We asked for some lemon to squeeze on it, which the waitress said she would get; it never arrived. My wife ordered pumpkin tortellini with a sage and butter sauce. The pasta should be silken, tossed in a pan with hot butter and sage, a classic dish. What she received was a bowl of tortellini so undercooked and tough that it resisted being cut (so, closer to raw than al dente). It had clearly been thrown straight from a pot into a bowl and had some butter and sage thrown in later. The tepid water from the pasta had coalesced in the bottom of the bowl with an oily skin of butter floating on top. It had clearly been sitting around for time before we had the misfortune of having it served up to us. It was visually disgusting and completely inedible. I was presented with an equally inedible melanzane parmigiana. The aubergine was at best bland but had been drowned with a huge ladle of a sugo that tasted as though a tin of crushed tomatoes and a jar of puree had been thrown in a pan, warmed and then slopped in great volume on top of the dish. Clearly no herbs, onion, garlic, salt or pepper had been injured in the making of dish. Had I received the dish at a greasy-spoon cafรฉ it would have been appalling; being served it at what had once been a good restaurant was simply saddening. We called for a bill, paid $190+ and prepared to leave. The waitress, seeing that we eaten almost nothing, asked whether there was a problem? We explained, as politely as we could, that it was cold, flavourless and inedible. Looking to defend the indefensible, she explained that the tortellini was 'al dente'. My wife tapped it with a fork, which bounced off the hard rubbery surface without leaving any impression. I pointed to the heaped pile of sugo which masked what might have been the dish I had ordered. The waitress ceased making eye contact and took the dishes away. Very sadly, nothing could induce me to eat there ever again.

Be the first to ReplySuch a fantastic night
This venue has it all. Great setting, outstanding service, and most importantly the food was perfecto. The restaurant is the perfect place for any occasion, special couple night, great group get together, or anything in between. The staff were fantastic all night, and truly a joy to talk to. We did the grand tour of multiple courses with matching wines. I could not have asked for better. The servings were generous and outstanding in taste and texture. The wine pairing was marvelous and well explained by the sommelier, who I must say, really made the night memorable. He knew his wines and was truly engaging at every tasting throughout the evening. Speaking of the night, it was not a rushed experience at all, and I felt the timings between each course was perfected to allow us time to enjoy, savour, and discuss each course. We truly love a great dining experience and this restaurant delivered on every level.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the very best Italian restaurants I experienced outside Italy
This institution in Melbourne propose one of the very best Italian cuisine I have experienced outside Italy. Excellent! The atmosphere, the professionalism of the staff, and the very rich wine list complete the picture and make your dinner a really great moment. Prices are at the level of the experience, not cheap but justified.
Be the first to ReplyVery expensive
The food was great and it showcased the skills of the chefs. We knew that the fixed six course menu we selected would be expensive. However, after the fourth course we were offered a selection from a cheese board, without telling us that it involved an additional cost ($50 for two of us). As the food we were served had already included some items not listed in the menu, we thought that the cheese was also included as part of the menu. We would not have done so had the additional cost been explained to us. When the bill arrived, we felt that we had been deceived and it reduced our pleasure in the evening.
