Flour + Water Pizza Shop San Francisco Reviews from The Last Year
This is some great pizza.
My favorites have been the seasonal corn pizza and the burrata pizza. Amazing combination of flavors with a crispy crust. Most pies have the right combination of sweet, sour, spicy, umami, etc. My main complaint is like many restaurants in SF, their menu pricing is bogus. They add in fees like a 6.5% surcharge for the SF mandate and another 1% for a Zero Food Print program they have. I calculated how much I paid in tip if you include those and it's close to 30%. Restaurants really just need to raise their prices and stop playing these ridiculous games with hidden fees. Why are you forcing customers to do the math for you? Just increase the price of the food and tell me what it costs all in. It's not a $22 pizza, it's $22 + 6.5% + 1% + 20% tip at the end.

Had a great time here with a large group of friends in the private dough room. Large groups get to pick 6 pizzas, get two types of salads, meatballs and mozzarella sticks and a soft serve dessert course for $45 per person. Overall, all the pizzas were great and the apps too! I had to take off a star because of the annoying pricing scheme - each bill has a 6.5% SF Mandate tacked on (higher than most restaurants I've been to) and an additional 1% Zero Waste fee. Of course this is before tax, so your end bill is roughly 16% larger than posted on the menu. Seems rather silly to me, at least the two fees should be built into the menu prices.
Did a walk in and was told an hour.
Ok sign us up. Oh, might be an hour and half. Fine. We were in from out of town and really wanted to try it. While we waited overheard the host tell the next walk ins that they had a counter order area. We then asked about that - "oh yeah you can do that." So we go and order from the counter area and literally the moment I hit submit on the order we get a text our table is ready. Mind you this is like 15 minutes later, not an hour and a half. So I go to the host and ask if we can eat in the restaurant so we can order drinks, etc. "Let me check." He goes over to another area and says to someone (my wife was there and heard him) say "yeah, so there's this guy who ordered..." kind of annoyed and then sees my wife and mumbles something to the other guy. Then he comes back to me and says "can't do it." So the food was good (not great but good), but the service was horrible. Really made us feel like we were not wanted there.
Pizza is burned consistently.
As you're walking up, you actually smell burned crust. Also... 7.5% mandate charge is ridiculous. Service is pretty good. Wine list ok.
Discovered Flour + Water Pizzeria on Instagram promoting
Discovered Flour + Water Pizzeria on Instagram promoting their new gluten free crust. Being celiac, I am always on the hunt for the best GF pizza! I'm so happy I found this spot because the gluten free pizza was outstanding. It was thick and fluffy (almost like focaccia) and had crispy edges. I wish we could have tried every pizza on the menu because they all sounded great - but we chose the sausage white pizza as well as the chopped salad. Both were delicious. Visited with a group of 5 friends on a Tuesday evening. We had a reservation and it was packed! The restaurant is open, bright, lively, and had good vibes. Service could use a bit of an improvement though - our waitress didn't know what was in the spritz and had to go find out, brought a salad ordered with chicken without chicken so we had to send it back for them to add chicken, and brought a soft serve with cherry when we didn't order toppings on it so had to bring out a new one of those too. The good news is that everything was fixed quickly. Can't wait to return for more GF pizza! *They do mention that the GF crust is cooked & handled separately but still in the same kitchen they are making the regular pizza dough so they can't full guarantee.
I visited the Flour + Water Pizza Shop last week on
I visited the Flour + Water Pizza Shop last week on Stockton Street. It's the place you can buy slices and whole Pizzas for take out. The entrance to Flour + Water Pizzeria is on Columbus Ave. My playlist running around my head when I was walking up Stockton Street was early Van Halen. I'm your ice cream man - Stop me when I'm passin' by - See all my flavors are guaranteed to satisfy. Wow. This was my first time at Flour + Water.... what a lovely experience. The nice lady in the PIzza Shop was super accommodating and helpful. I ordered a Pepperoni with mozzarella, tomato sauce, pepperoni and mama lil's peppers and a Margherita with mozzarella, tomato sauce, fior di latte, basil and parmigiano. I'm a big thin crust guy... think Tony's Pizza Napoletana across the street. But both slices were just perfect. The crust....... ohh the crust was coated in a perfectly crusty cheese, you know the kind that oozes out of your grilled cheese sandwich onto the hot pan? The pepperoni's were dime size little jewels of beauty that were rich in flavor and texture. The Margherita was more sedate and elegant but still a perfect work of culinary art. I loved the basil influence. What ever your play list is on any given day, Matt says hop, skip and jump up Stockton street to Flour + Water Pizza Shop for your own personal slice of Pizza heaven. David Lee Roth wouldn't want it any other way.
We strolled in late on a Saturday night.
All staff that greeted us were polite and friendly. We were seated at the bar promptly, even though there were tables available, but we didn't mind. Just found it curious. We ordered a gluten free pepperoni (not listed on the menu but they have gluten free available) and a meatza pizza. Also ordered a caesar salad, iced tea and coke. Both drinks came in bottles accompanied by short glasses of ice. I preferred this because our drinks were fresh and we could pace the drink and top it off as needed. The caesar salad had too much pepper for my liking as well as too many edge pieces, but was overall okay. The gluten free pepperoni looked amazing and was cooked to perfection. Crispy, soft, and spongy. I didn't see or taste enough peppers, but the amount of pepperoni was decent and most of my bites had something other than crust and sauce. The meatza pizza was one of the best pizzas I've had in north beach. Super flavorful but not overpowering. The pizza is a bit greasy/thin/floppy, but nothing a couple of folds couldn't fix. You also can't beat the price! $23 for a delicious pizza is a steal compared to some chains that overprice their goods. I would definitely recommend this spot and look forward to my next visit.
Very good pizza.
Love the ambiance. My wife and I visited for the first time while in town from the South Bay. Wonderful cocktails, pizza, and wonderful waitstaff. The only downside was the restrooms. They were not very well kept up and after seeing the sight of them, I decided to forego it altogether. My wife said the ladies room was clean. SF men, keep our bathrooms clean!

Everything we had was delicious! We had the Margherita, Burrata, and Meat pizzas and they were all excellent. The burrata and pea appetizer was fresh and zesty. I usually hate mozarella sticks, but the kids ordered them and I have to admit, they were delicious.

The space is beautiful but I was confused when I looked at our check and we were charged a fee for not ordering food, it was a 1% fee but I've never seen this at an establishment and it seems uncalled for.

They seated us very quickly and the food was amazing! They also have gluten free options and it was equally as good. Really kind and helpful staff!!! Thank you so much:)
Was with my Dad in North Beach and we wanted some dessert
Was with my Dad in North Beach and we wanted some dessert so stopped by for their soft serve! Service was quick and we walked out in ~5 mins. I got the salted caramel & fior de latte swirl w/ brown butter crumb! It was super yummy and creamy yet refreshing! Great place if you're ever looking for a nice little sweet treat.
Very, very good pizza.
We tried the Margherita and the Burrata. The Burrata was spicy. Both were excellent. We also split the chopped salad and a soft serve swirl dessert with chocolate cookie crumbles and chocolate sauce. Cool, modern buildout. Nice bar seating. Great service.
Excellent all around.
The crust is better than most complete pizzas. Top notch service. A little loud but it's a pizzeria in North Beach, if you want quiet stay home and consult one of the various Papas.
Pizza is great, Mozzarella sticks delightful, Caesar salad
Pizza is great, Mozzarella sticks delightful, Caesar salad delivery was shocking small, was a half-empty box filled with $1.50 of chopped Romaine for $16 (they need to fix this, embarrassing).
Poor customer service.
I received a gift card for Flour + Water Pizzeria as a gift after having a baby a couple of years ago. I tried to use the gift card at Flour + Water restaurant, but at the end of the meal was told that I needed to go to the Pizzeria to use the gift card (which was annoying, but not a huge deal). Then I went to the Pizzeria and at the end of the meal they told me that the gift card was too old so I'd have to contact customer service the next day and request that my card to be credited the value of the gift card (which again was annoying, but not a huge deal). So I contacted customer service and they would not accept my gift card because they told me that the Flour + Water Pizzeria gift card is now only valid at Yellow Moto Pizzeria due to chance in ownership. The pizza was very average, I wish I would have waited the 2 hours for Tony's instead! If just for good, I'd give this place 3 stars.
Absolutely delicious pizza in a warm and beautiful space in
Absolutely delicious pizza in a warm and beautiful space in the heart of Little Italy! I loved dining at Flour + Water Pizzeria and would highly recommend it for your next (slightly elevated) pizza craving. I came here with a couple of friends right at the start of dinnertime on a Thursday. It wasn't our first choice to eat at 5 pm, but it was the only available reservation before 9 when I was booking the day before. However, there was a ton of space during the entire course of our meal! So I would feel relatively safe walking in on a weeknight; you'll probably get seated. The actual space is amazing. I loved just sitting and admiring the benches, tables, tiling (so good), lighting, pizza oven, the whole setup. There's even a cute, more casual area at the back with an arcade game. Also, why is their bench the most comfortable restaurant bench I've ever sit on?!? Like, the back is perfect. I would tip that bench. Onto the food, we decided to skip apps and go straight for the pizza. Though the server recommended the mozz sticks and meatballs, which I see is recommended here too, so that's for next time! We got the Hawaiian, Burrata, and Mister Jiu's (a special collab pizza for one week only!). All were BOMB. Hawaiian: I've previously been a Hawaiian hater. Flour + Water may have converted me. Like yes, bring the thin pineapple slices that actually meld well with the cheese. And the ham and the chili oil are perfect compliments. Would 100% order this again. Burrata: Might have been my fave. I mean, put burrata on anything and you have my attention. But ugghhh, they were generous with the burrata and the sauce was saucing and the lemon oil was crazy!! Love!! Mister Jiu's: This didn't end up being my favorite, which I kind of expected, but I was too intrigued to not try. And it was still good, let me be clear! It tasted like Chinese food while also being pizza? Kudos to the chefs. All our pies were delicious in their own way, but what they shared was that banging -- to borrow the term from the Brits -- crust!! Like !! The bubbles?!? The thinness, crispiness, AND chewiness??! YES! The roof of my mouth was a little torn up at the end of the night lol, but it's not that deep (rather it was delicious), and I think that can be avoided with a more conscious chewing style. Finally, the service was attentive! So all around, I loved my experience and will come back at some point when my pizza craving inevitably rears its head again. Check it out!
So on one side of the restaurant, you can order to go
So on one side of the restaurant, you can order to go slices and grab an open table. While the other, you can have a proper sit down service (would def grabbing a reservation if you can if you opt this route). Since we were on a pizza food tour that day, with this being our second place to visit - we opted for the Big Slice to share. At first glance, this pizza loooked goooood. But with our first bite, we were immediately disappointed. The pepperoni was crisp, but the entire slice was near burnt at the bottom. I should've took a photo to show y'all but the leoparding wasn't even leoparding. It was just straight up charred and burnt. The dough didn't taste doughy at all, and it was almost like a large pizza chip. There were some parts of the middle that was a little less burnt but it didn't redeem the overall pizza. It also felt like it needed more marinara & acidity to help balance the fattiness from the cheese and pepperoni. Needless to say, I was quite disappointed and had higher expectations for Flour + Water.
Great food, service and ambiance.
The manager was very on top of things and made sure we were taken care of during a busy time. Pizza was delicious and it was definitely the crust that was outstanding. Also split a large salad with my wife that couldn't have been better. Will definitely return.
Perfect stay
Got a seat spontaneously. Great and diverse service. Good pizza and very good selection of wines. Prices were reasonable for SF.
Simple, authentic pizza
Really comforting and modern decor, friendly service and authentic pizza. Delicious! Smoked eggplant pizza was to die for. No one flavor outdid the others. Margherita pizza also fab. Highly recommend for a laid back pie.
Lives up to the hype!
This restaurant definitely lived up to the hype! Had a party of four so did the pasta tasting to try a little bit of everything family style. The pastas were better than the pizzas but the chocolate bundino dessert stole the show - so good! I was surprised that the bill was not significantly pricier than their Penny Roma restaurant down the street.
Heaven in my mouth!
It was so good we went two nights in a row! The food was absolutely amazing! Do not miss going to this place. I don’t think I would bring my little kids here, but definitely a night out with your significant other or friends.
Good pizzas at any time
Restaurant in the Italian neighborhood that caught our attention on the way to Union Square, on the way back KO was convenient for us in Chinatown and we came back to this restaurant. It was late and there was only one table occupied, we asked if they would feed us and the answer was affirmative. We ate very well and as time went by it became full again, for some reason it must be
American-style pizza
Very good pizza, friendly staff and pleasant surroundings. We had the peperoni pizza and the ham and mushrooms and were not disappointed. Pay attention to the bill which increases significantly not only due to the tip but also ecological taxes.
