Hmm I couldn't wait to try this place and was sooo disappointed! Super expensive - $25 for sinigang that was just ok, barely had any vegetables and lechon kawali in bite size pieces in a tiny plate - sheesh !!! Also had the eggplant salad, fried chicken and pancit. Flavor was just OK. Nothing special. Portions were small and flavor to me didn't taste authentic. Honestly the only thing I enjoyed was the halo halo. There were 4 of us and bill was almost $250 and felt ripped off actually. Granted we each had cocktails but still ... would pass on this place if you want real good tasting Filipino food.

Second time visiting and I had to leave a review because I was once again blown away by both the food and cocktails! I will be back, and am ready to push towards regular status! It was a tough night for the team- they shared that their printer for online orders had issues, and at once point a fuse blew. That said, the staff did what they could, kept moving forward, and the food was exactly as tasty as it had been the other time I visited. The manager offered my table a free dessert to make up for any inconvenience, and we left full and with a great meal. If we'd been in a hurry we might have been frustrated, but this was a casual Saturday dinner and the slow down wasn't an issue for us. If you aren't in a huge rush- and assuming the fuse doesn't blow out of the blue- I highly recommend checking them out! Make sure to get the Eggplant Omelette as it is totally delicious, distinct, and beautifully prepared!

Finally got the chance to visit this Michelin bib recognized Filipino restaurant in Oakland. It's located in a small plaza in a little corner, there's parking in it but there's also street parking. Came here on a Thursday afternoon and I had to drive around twice, it's next to a taqueria and a lot of us went into the wrong spot. It's cute and aesthetic inside with tons of plants and Filipino decor. We were a party of 5 but they don't seat you until your entire party is there so I sat at the bar when we all slowly started arriving. I asked what was the most popular cocktail and the bartender said blow the whistle and fresh off boat. I started off with the Feelin myself (mescal, guava, grapefruit, and fino), because I like mescal, then blow the whistle (rum, tamarind, chili liqueur, and lime). And my friends got beers and a michelada. We got some appetizers (pulutan (snacks for drinking in Tagalog)) the pork lumpia and lechon kawali (friend pork belly). Then when our entire party came we all ordered different things, 2 bowls of garlic rice, friend chicken, pork adobo, tortang Talong, Pancit sotanghon, daing na bangus, and the special beef steak. I live and grew up in a Filipino household so I am used to my mom's Filipino cooking so this is like your home cooked meals but a tad bit elevated. I didn't try any dessert but I think this is a good spot if you're looking for some Filipino food or trying it out for the first time.
Be the first to ReplyMy wife and I came to FOB kitchen on Friday night March 3rd.
We had a reserved table and were seated immediately. After sitting down I noticed there was a group next to us that was sitting there before we arrived that hadn't ordered yet. It took about 15-20 minutes before a waitress asked for their order and then got our order which I thought was kind of slow.I will say the vibes here are on point! We loved the plants and the really cool light fixtures. They did a great job decorating the place.I got the Pork adobo and my wife got the Daing an Bangus. The sauce in the Pork Adobo is really good and the meat was so tender. I was disappointed that all it included was pork with a side of rice. The fish my wife got was kinda dry and left her feeling hungry afterward.I also order a drink called the Palawan Sunrise which wasn't that good. It came in a skinny glass and was completely filled with ice. I was shocked at how little drink I got on top of the fact it wasn't anything special. The prices are pretty high for what you get. The Pork Adobo was $18 and the fish was $26. Honestly I was expecting more from the reviews, but I'm not the only one leaving a mediocre review either.

I'm so glad we got to come and dine in today! My wife and I were so excited to try FOB Kitchen. Knowing this place was on the Michelin guide, I knew I had to come. The chef & owner, Janice, is an awesome person and really cool to talk to. The employees are nice and quick on their feet.I love the decor; plants all over the restaurant, vibrant bar with excellent bottles, exotic light fixtures, an open kitchen, and a music playlist that makes you want to dance and sing; oldies and smooth r&b. This place is the vibes! We started with their Shanghai lumpia ($13). Their lumpia is cooked perfectly and tastes wonderful. The lumpia sauce pairs great with their house made hot sauce; vinegar and chili. Their lechon kawali silog ($17) is great. I love the addition of the calamansi soy sauce and pickled onions on the side as well as the light vinaigrette salad. The lechon kawali are small pieces and cooked perfectly. The garlic rice is of course delicious and is topped with a runny sunny-side egg. We also enjoyed their longanisa silog ($17). Their longanisa tasted House made and very authentic with its light sweetness. I can tell the way they look, it looks handmade. I love how Janice stuck with the true authenticity of Filipino food. She didn't incorporate too much into the food; it wasn't fused with anything crazy. This is an excellent place for people to try Filipino food for the first time. It's simple and super delicious. We'll definitely be coming back again for more dishes and cocktails. I highly recommend FOB Kitchen!

Food, service, and cocktails all super tasty. We've been back 5+ times. Love the eggplant, tocino, adobo fried rice. Bomb.

LOVED the Pork Rib Sinigang! Would go back just for it!
Be the first to ReplyMy friends and I went in for brunch/lunch on Saturday.
This is my second time here. I really enjoyed my fried rice, last time I'd gotten the Tortang Talong and while it was good it wasnt something I'd come back for. Just not my thing! The adobo fried rice was reportedly yummy but my friend said the meat with her Tocino was really fatty. In addition to our meals, we had the watermelon slush which was super yummy tho it wish it was more liquid and less ice for the price. It wasn't crowded and our food came out quickly. The one upset was that we ordered a Halo Halo and it took over 20 minutes to come out. We paid after ordering it and our waiter came by us several times as they set up for the dinner service. They looked at us a bunch so we assumed it was on the way. Finally we asked and they'd forgotten to make it. This wouldn't be a big deal, but we were the only table left so it seems odd that they just let us sit there for so long without checking on it. A minor upset but it wouldn't keep me from returning.I'll also note that the last time we came it was much more crowded but the food was pretty speedy even then! It's a cute, well decorated little spot, just wish it had better parking.

I didnt have a change to take a pic of my Adobo, but everything is really good here.My best friend Luanne brought me here years ago, she knows the owners and I fell in love with this place. The vibe and the food it all works, I was able to also tried a Watermelon margarita and it did not disappoint. While in Oakland I started visiting at least 4 or 5 times a month. I appreciate the queer inclusivity. Thank you I recommend this place.
Be the first to ReplyIf I can give zero - I would.
I came to this place for take out - and as I was waiting for my order by the bar, I have witnessed how the eggs were placed on the silog dishes. One instance, the guy prepping the food had a blue rag on his left hand - as if trying to catch the egg from falling. As he placed the egg on top of the rice, loosed threads from his blue rag got caught in between the rice and the egg and he pulled it out - swiping the whole entire length of the loosed thread between the rice and the egg. The second instance, he picked the egg, using his bare hand/fingers (no gloves or anything sanitary at all) from the pan and placed it on top of the rice. I pray that no one will get sick from the unsanitary practice that this person has been doing.

First time customers brought family and excited to try and support Filipino restaurants locally. First impression,Bad customer service, no acknowledgement of customers who comes in. Not welcoming, hello we're here to give you business? Second, looking forward to the Tocino and longanisa, they're out! What? It wasn't that late..huh? That's a downer. We were seated and forced to eat what they have left over.. overall, not worth the trip and most of all the money; support somewhere else; just a big hype, food is mediocre. Will not return and recommend.

The service was excellent. And small quantity for the price. Better go to Isla in Newark.

Came here on a Saturday night with my girlfriends to celebrate me and my friends birthday. We made reservations just to be sure, never know what to expect these days. We were greeted by the lovely staff- all super friendly and welcoming. Started off with shots at the bar and the nice bartender recommended the "Feelin Myself" drink and a shot of Tequilla. Then we proceeded to our table and ordered a bit of everything & it was absolutely delicious!! I will say my favorites were the wings, sotonghon, halo halo, and adobo! The adobo was, OMG good!!!!! They added coconut milk to their adobo, which was my first time having it this way. It's a must try! I want more just thinking about it. Before we left, the owner bought us all a round of shots! Such a kind gesture. I will say though, if you're going to go with 6 or more people I'd order 2 of each of the entrees. The portions are on the smaller side. I definitely want to come back to try their sinigang.
Be the first to ReplyCame here today for brunch.
We had the daing na bangus, singkamas ensalada and lumpia shanghai plus adobo fried rice and veggie fried rice. For me the dishes were mediocre. Even the veggie lumpia was plain. I was hoping to try the pancit and adobo in gata but they were only served during dinner. Our bill was over a 100 and personally it was not worth it.
Be the first to ReplyCame here for brunch near noon on a Saturday morning.
It was crowded when we arrived, but we didn't have to wait long for a table. The staff at FOB kitchen are attentive, friendly, and add a lot to the atmosphere. We started off with the lumpia shanghai and ordered a tocino and longanisa rice plate. I was excited to try each of these items because I heard they made each of the in house. I would say the flavor of each is fair, not too offensive, and something that everybody can enjoy. I've been here for dinner service and can't recommend it enough.
Be the first to ReplyI ate at this restaurant for a birthday celebration.
The service was terrible and the food was Americanized and over priced. One of the servers used curse words casually within conversation. There was a marble found in the pork adobo. The manager said she would replace the order and explained that the marble came from ticket holder and said it must've bounced off and into to dish. After we finished eating and the dishes were cleared from the table, we noticed all the other servers were getting irritated with us because we were taking up a big table and there was a line out the door, but we still were waiting for our pork adobo replacement which was never put in when the manager said it was. We had to wait even longer. The restaurant needs better management.
Be the first to ReplyCame here on a Wednesday for dinner.
The food was amazing, drinks too. Even the non alcoholic ones like the one in the picture. Delicious! Its a mix of authentic with modern cuisine. The environment is super cool too, nicely decorated and full of plants which gives the place a super comforting vibe. Food was good and service was good as well, only reason Im giving 3 stars is for the time that the food comes out. I understand when the place is crazy busy theres a excuse but it wasn't at the time we went. We found ourselves waiting for every single course quite a while. Besides that, highly recommend this place! Definitely should try!

*** Disclaimer*** 5 STARS for the food1 STAR for the serviceLet's start with the good? The food was absolutely delicious. The Daing na Bangus was ordered by the hubs. It had a fresh taste and I love how the give you the entire fish! My son ate up the vegetarian fried rice like he was starving! He's a little guy and very picky. I honestly don't think he would have stopped eating if It weren't for me to starting to eat my own order. He got some bites after I started eating not to worry but they weren't as frequent. My dish the tocilog. It's always been my fave breakfast hands down next to pancakes. This pork was not achingly sweet like most tocino which I usually drown in vinegar. The "in-house "hot sauce gave the perfect balance to the tocino. Lastly the service, dishes were coming late or delivered to the wrong table throughout our time there. My husband pointed out to the server my tocilog was missing and then they delivered a second veggie fried rice to us. It was good and bad in a way my tocilog came after my husband and son's dish because I could feed my son first. However the longer it took to came, I knew my son's threshold for "brunch" was running out. I ordered halo halo and turon for dessert. It never came, a box for the leftover fried rice and check came instead. I felt like they were rushing us out at this point. All I can say is I got my desserts somewhere else. At least it rounded out my Sunday Brunch foodie trip to OAK.

The staff was friendly and the atmosphere was great! Here's what we ordered: * Lechon Kawali - This dish featured deep fried pork belly, along with a dipping sauce and preserved vegetables. The waitress was also thoughtful enough to bring hot sauce to pair with the dish. Overall, the pork belly cutlets are amazing as they are crispy, chewy AND juicy!* Pancit Sotanghon - These glass noodles are great if you you're looking for something filling and comforting! I wish the noodles had a bit more flavor so I actually added the pork adobo broth to it.* Watermelon Slush - This drink was very refreshing and paired great with the meal. It can also be ordered with or without alcohol!* Tortang Talong - An eggplosion of flavor-- this eggplant omelette decorated with cherry tomatoes is delicious! For those who haven't heard of/had this dish before, this traditional Filipino food really offers an eye-opening rendition of the classic omelette! It's a unique blend of textures and taste that leaves you wanting more! * Halo-Halo - This is a remarkable rendition of the Southeast Asian shaved ice dessert that celebrates colors, textures and tastes! Buried deep within the dessert are rainbow jellies. Within the shaved ice, you'll find layers of condensed milk and at the top, you'll find a crown of ube ice cream decorated with colorful corn flakes and rolled wafer cookies! Each and every sip of the drink offers a different taste.* Pork Adobo with Garlic Rice - The pork was tender and soft, and melts in your mouth. They're also braised in a delicious and flavorful vinegar-garlic-pepperish taste. The garlic rice was a lovely addition, pairing perfectly with the pork. Overall, this is the perfect dish for a chilly night!

LIKE TEMESCAL THIS FILIPINO EATERY REPRESENTS MODERN TRANSFORMATIONLiving in the Temescal District during my college years the district was a "Sleeping Giant" about to wake up. I mean that really. Even though from the outlook the district looked sketchy at best I always felt safe in that district. The change in the district started happening in the 2010s decade, which was about more than 10 years after I graduated college. There were more modern, unique, and diverse eateries popping up. This made the Temescal District alive and vibrant. FOB Kitchen's modern approach to Filipino food represents the modern transformation in the Temescal District. The first time I came here was Saturday in March for brunch. The menu for brunch is different than dinner as the silogs are served during brunch. There were two dishes I was deciding about ordering - the longanisa hash or the lechon kawali silog. I asked my server what she recommended and she said the lechon kawali. I also ordered the crispy chicken skins and pandan ice tea. The crispy chicken skins at FOB Kitchen were similar to chicharrón, but much better. Whereas chicharrón can sometimes have an airy texture similar to rice cakes the chicken skins had that crunch with a slight oiliness that I like. I was excited about the lechon kawali. Even though this dish was delicious I wasn't blown away. I could have based my rating on the lechon kawali and that rating would have been 3-stars. I wanted to give this place another chance. Why? First this place is close to my apartment. Second they are layers in a restaurant. Those "layers" consisted of other dishes served at a restaurant. Even though sometimes I review based on one item I wanted to give this place another chance as it was listed in the Bib Gourmand in the Michelin Guide. The next Saturday I came here I ordered the daing silog, which is a boneless bangus over rice. When this dish was served I knew already this bangus dish was different from other bangus I've ordered from other eateries. Most bangus tend to be overfried due to the dark brown color of the meat that makes it too jerky. The bangus at FOB Kitchen is fried to a golden brown. After taking a bite of the bangus it was moist. However the best part of the bangus is the fatty belly. I wasn't disappointed at all with the fatty belly of the bangus served from FOB Kitchen. Bar none the best bangus I ever had due to the combination of the fatty belly and moist meat. After eating the bangus I began this "rollercoaster ride" of items I ordered from FOB Kitchen. The next time I came here in was April when I ordered the fried chicken silog. This might be a small detail what I noticed was the fried egg. In traditional Filipino cooking meat, vegetables, and egg are cooked well done. Fried eggs in Filipino cooking tend to be way overcooked. When it comes to fried egg I like my yolk runny as porn not a chalky texture. The fried egg on the fried chicken silog was served sunny side up. Two weeks later I came her again for Saturday brunch. This time I ordered the longanisa hash. Generally I don't like hash items for breakfast because when all the items are combined this dish turns mushy. The longanisa hash at FOB Kitchen is different as each item is cooked separately - the sweet longanisa, crispy diced potatoes, and sunny side fried egg. Eating this dish provides different flavors and textures.Due to a different menu I wanted to try dinner at FOB Kitchen. I came here on a Saturday night in June to mainly order sinigang, which is my favorite Filipino dish of all time due to the tangy sour taste from the tamarind. If I'm going to pay for a dish I don't want a taste from home due to the price. Something unique has to be special to justify the price. The sinigang from FOB Kitchen has a meaty broth that I never had in a sinigang before with a touch a slight tamarind seasoning. I won't say this is the best sinigang I ever had but this dish is still thumbs up in view. The next time I came here was on a Saturday evening during the July 4 Weekend. I ordered the bistek. I ordered this dish to test the traditional approach versus the modern technique in Philippines cooking. Traditional bistek in Filipino cuisine is thinly sliced and cooked well done. In addition the type of cut is sirloin. At FOB Kitchen the steak is not thinly cut yet the meat is grilled medium rare. This bistek dish still pays homage to the traditional bistek due to the tangy, sweet onions. What makes this bistek dish stand out is the use of the picanha, which is the cut of steak you see at a Brazilian steakhouse buffet. The picanha adds the fat that is missing in traditional bistek. If I had stop going here after my first visit then I would have missed out a lot of dishes that I enjoyed especially the bangus, which is the best dish at FOB Kitchen. For any cuisine to preserve it needs to be modern yet pay homage to tradition. At FOB Kitchen you can see the modernization of Filipino cuisine.

It's solid Filipino food but at prices that would make your lola's eyes water.FOB Kitchen was a recommendation of numerous people who knew I was visiting Oakland and it just so happened to be the first place my friend took me after I arrived at the airport and challenged him to show me his version of The Bay. With the large, concentrated Filipino population, my buddy wanted to make sure I got a taste of meryenda East Bay-style.Located in the trendy Temescal neighborhood of Oakland, FOB Kitchen shares a plaza with a pawn shop and a check cashing place. The menu for food is split between Pulutan (Bar Snacks), Ulam (Main Dish), Gulay (Vegetable Dish). But before food, how about the drinks? The beverages here range from colorful rum, gin, and tequila cocktails to tropical slushees. My friend and I opted for a refreshing guava frosé slushee, full of tropical vibes that made us forget about the NorCal cold. For dinner, we got the Shanghai Lumpia ($13), the Crispy Chicken Skins ($9), the Daing Na Bangus ($23), and Pork Rib Sinigang ($23). Everything tasted authentic and delicious, with the Crispy Chicken Skin catching me off guard because it was done like Mexican chicharrones. However, nothing caught me more off guard than the portion-to-price ratio.Maybe I'm just not used to NorCal prices, but for the price of the Bangus and Sinigang we had, I expected at least double the portion. A big reason why I ordered the Sinigang was because I was craving soup and the amount of liquid in FOB Kitchen's version is more akin to a puddle as opposed to the small swimming pool I'm accustomed to eating in Cerritos and Artesia down in Southern California. Not to say the flavors were off; everything tasted good. But the price! THE PRICE! Ano ba 'yan! Maybe if I drank more I wouldn't have worried about it as much. Thankful for my friend's generosity but for my money, find me at Señor Sisig if I'm craving Filipino food in Oakland.

I will not be able to stay away from this place!!Went on a Friday for a bestie brunch and the place was actually pretty empty. Grabbed a seat on the side walk patio setup. Had the Pandan Iced coffee to start. It had a good roasted coffee flavor with a medium sweetness. Next up, Fresh of the boat cocktail... literally transported me back to my Punta de Mita vacation last year... beach relaxation in a glass. Might be cool if they served it in a coconut on special days! The Tocino Silog with garlic rice was soo good! The pork was balanced with meat and fat (not chewy at all) and seasoning- a tangy sweet flavor which went to another level when you add in the house hot sauce. I was so full with still 1/3 left to go... my stomach was full but my mouth was hungry for the fireworks that were happening so naturally there was not one grain of food left on the plate. Ordered the crispy chicken skins to go... I wish they would sell this in bags! It is so crispy and savory, perfectly cooked and even better when enjoyed with the house hot sauce. Literally drooling as I'm writing this... going back asap!

I stopped by FOB Kitchen yesterday afternoon for lunch with a group of friends and didn't have to wait long to be seated at a table. The restaurant was definitely short-staffed so things took longer than usual - getting our orders taken, drinks, etc. That said, once we got our food in front of us, we quickly forgot about the wait. My wife ordered the fried pork belly dish while I got the fried chicken dish and both were delicious, and incredibly filling. The chicken is very moist, and the skin outside reminds me of how KFC prepares their chicken. However, the crunchy pork belly is probably my favorite bite of the meal. You'll definitely want to take a nap after lunch here since the dishes are so hearty. I wish the drinks menu here was more expansive and flexible. Overall, I would stop by here again; perfect food after a long night of drinking.

We wanted to try a new place in Berkeley area, so we decided to come here for brunch to try some Philipino food. Parking was available since they have their own parking lot. There is both outdoor and indoor seating if you are worried about COVID. The restaurant is relatively small, so the place is usually decently packed with people. There is a proudly waving Pride flag at the front, so you cannot miss the place! We decided to sit indoors, and when we were seated I immediately noticed the interesting wall patterns behind us. The menu also had a great assortment of dishes and cocktails to try. I ordered the Lechon Kawali, and for drinks, I got the Golden State of Mind. The pork was packed with so much flavor, and the taste was unique to this cuisine. They also provide their own hot sauce to add to the food, and that adds a kick that compliments well. You can even buy some to take home if you want! The drink was very interesting, I never had matcha with egg white and gin. It was a combination that you would not think would work on paper, but it was delicious!Overall, great place for Philipino food in the East bay, definitely worth a try if you are thinking about it!

Went here for brunch with friends and they had a great silog and brunch selection! I got the longanisa hash and there was a great flavor. I also got the pandan iced coffee and an ube affogato. The waitress was so sweet and amazing, she was accommodating. They also had their house made hot sauce which was sweet and vinegar tasting that it complemented their dishes well. I definitely recommend going here to eat Filipino food!
