Excellent and Pricey American Restaurant
The location is beautifully decorated. The bar makes excellent drinks. Service is very professional. The menu has several sharing options to start, and all are delicious. The main courses for the price are a bit meager. Wine list is good however extremely pricey and marked up. I would return and most likely eat at the bar. I recommend the restaurant; however, the prices are high considering the amount of food received although everything we ate was excellent.

This place is the most happening spot in SD. A nickey duke must dine....Julio and Cristina blew our mind, freshest drinks and incredible food. Whoever left a 3 or 4 star totally Karen's out. 5 stars all day!

We went for $1 Oysters on Monday and it was such a great experience, we had tuna tartar 4 dozen of oysters and side of fries which was a bomb, drinks were delicious as well, please try their Margaritas and their bubbles selection 💯 Our server was attentive and ambiance is great! I made reels about my review, check out my IG @andreazzbayu Verdict: I WILL COMEBACK :)

Be the first to ReplyFort Oak misses the mark for customer experience
My wife and I returned to Fort Oak for another helping when we were looking to celebrate her birthday this past weekend. Reservations secured, we looked forward to a Friday out as a couple, sans young children. Upon arrival we were alerted that the restaurant was quite busy that evening and that our patio reservation would not garner us a seat on the featured patio from website photos, but rather another patio around the corner. The kind hostess did offer that we could “sit on stools at the bar if we preferred a more lively scene.” We conveyed that bar seats were not really in line with my wife’s birthday expectations, so we followed the hostess out to the sidewalk to access what will here-fore be labeled the “Afterthought Patio” where I can only imagine the rubbish bins had stood prior to Fort Oak needing three additional tables that evening. We were pleasantly greeted by our server for the evening who efficiently took our cocktail order and we were off and running. Selections from the raw menu, greens, and shareable sections all graced our table, leading up to the star of the dinner, the $75 wagyu strip steak. All the food was quite tasty with meticulous presentation, though we did feel 2 hours from seating to entree delivery was a tad long. However, food does taste better when you’re hungry! Apparently our server didn’t get the message that we were celebrating a birthday because after our entree, the check arrived and the kitchen lights that had previously been illuminating the Afterthought Patio through large windows, were extinguished. Our time was up, so it seemed, and it only required a quick search inside the main part of the restaurant to find our server so that we could pay our bill. I can see why Michelin awarded Fort Oak a Plate Honoree, it’s just too bad that everything else about the customer experience beyond the plate has yet to catch up. At this price point, Michelin Star restaurant Jeune et Jolie in Carlsbad is the better choice and where we will head for future celebratory dinners.
Be the first to ReplyTough to review as lots of plus and minuses
Ambiance is casual, nothing special. Service was super slow. Took about 20 minutes to get our wine opened. After 1 hour 20 minutes we had one appetizer and that was tuna tartare. Super frustrating. We also ordered another appetizer which was the cauliflower which was excellent but it came out with our entrees, not cool. The menu items are well thought out, very well thought out actually buy the execution was off. I ordered a pork chop which was overdone and came out barely warm. After waiting that long this is inexcusable. My wife ordered the NY strip which also wasn’t hot. Tables are very close together. All in all, the potential is there for an amazing dinner but we left very frustrated. We voiced our opinion and someone came by but other than comping the cauliflower which we said we didn’t want any longer since the entrees were being delivered nothing else was offered. To me, all talk and no action. Too many other choices.
Be the first to ReplyVery tasty supper
Great atmosphere but itI was disappointing to have ibeen forgotten by our waiting’ staff at the moment when we had sat down and really wanted a drink. Food was excellent and yes it was also innovative. The smoked carrots were really good as were the other shorting dishes. Yes it was high end, and so was the quality of the ingredients

Street parking here is a pain but worth it. It’s San Diego so dress code is pretty casual and laid back. We made reservations for 8 and ordered 7 sharable plates and just drank a lot. None of us got an entree and the bill came out to be almost $500. Pretty steep for the wallet but delicious food and we were still hungry afterwards..lol. We ordered: Fairlane ($14) - gin and Prosecco with lemon grapefruit and elderflower. Sour and refreshing. Roadmaster ($15) - old fashion Stingray ($15) - blanco tequila, not as sweet or refreshing as I liked compared to Fairlane. For food we got: -Sourdough bread ($9) - bread was so soft with pacific sea salt cultured butter. Great starter when you’re hungry. -Little gem salad ($17) - the whipped feta was everything! Hazelnuts, raisins, everything spice, sumac ranch. This salad was so refreshing and light. Even the guys who don’t normally eat greens loved it. -Squid ink bucatini ($27) - my favorite, it’s tuna belly puttanesca (from the word whore, google it!), crispy garlic but a bit salty. -Broiled oysters ($23) - cooked oysters with espelette butter, bacon and lemon. So delicious. I wanted more. -Steamed clams and mussels ($21) - salty with Spanish chorizo, white wine, herb butter, grilled bread. -Nectarine and Persian cucumbers salad ($18) - the guys loved the gem salad so much and wanted to try this. Not as good but still refreshing. The falafel and green tehina sauce. -Chicken fried quail ($23) - corn bread, red beans, red eye gravy, dates, sweet and spicy. The entire food experience was amazing. If you don’t mind the price, this is great place for drinks because they don’t cheap out on the alcohol and the food is just scrumptious.

Had dinner yesterday with family. The place is nice (but noisy) and the service too. The food is ok, too pretentious perhaps, and pricey. SD is not NYC. When it comes to the wine list, prices are openly ridiculous. Margins of 400-500% in every bottle.
Be the first to ReplyWay way over priced and many dishes were too salty
The food was unbelievably sub-pared. We ordered a number of small plates - chicken fried quail, steamed clams & mussels, goat milk cavatelli and for dinner grilled branzino, duroc pork chop and NY strip. Overall - each of the dishes was way, way over salty. The only decent items we ordered were the quail, pork chop and NY strip. The presentation was good. Service was really mixed - water was filled nicely but only one time the server asked us for drinks and that was at the beginning! Price point is insane - NYC price & just terrible taste

Excellent service and delicious food. We especially enjoyed the ahi crudo, roasted carrots and charred caulilini. Many reviewers recommended the bread, which was good but nothing unusual. I particularly appreciated the attention paid to my shellfish allergy

I ate here for a business dinner and the food was amazing. The service was excellent as well. We started with raw oysters, beef tartare, and scallop ceviche which were well exquisite. For the entree, I had the barbecue duck and it was exquisite. I have never had duck done like that. To finish it off, I had the bread pudding with sour cream ice cream and it was an excellent meal.
Be the first to Reply(Over)Hyped Hot Spot in Mission Hills
Listen, this place is a big hit among the yuppies and wealthy hipsters of the area, so I doubt anything I write will cause much of a stir. But for those who may be 55+, this may be more valuable for your as that's my generation. Let me start with the positives. It's on a hip corner in one of San Diego's wealthiest residential neighborhoods, Mission Hills. Much of it is open air and they have a high traffic happy hour. The crowd is about the best looking group I've seen in years outside of L.A. or N.Y. and it's a mix of young, upscale families, gay couples and tons of fit, successful 30-somethings. But it was not what I had hoped for a 70th birthday party. Almost impossible to have a conversation due to the design and stark décor reverberating the sound of the guests. It is extremely expensive with one steak going for $105 and a glass of wine in the high teens. Service was good, although it was so loud she needed to repeat everything she said. Tables are uncovered and the whole vibe is very hip and informal. The menu is very limited and they push the raw seafood and shared plates, some of which seemed odd choices. The prawns hors d'oeuvres was coated with a semi-hot spice reminiscent of a Bloody Mary. It didn't work for me the shrimp themselves seemed mundane. We shared a salad that was delicious with mixed greens, beets and other items that just made for a perfect course. Baguette was served warm with fresh butter. We both had the fish entree which was served whole, not my fav ever, but it was wonderful. For dessert, we opted for a wonderful peach cobbler, but marred by an oddity of an ice cream that was dark grey and unappealing. Vanilla with ash or something absurd. The bill arrived and we were both blown away at the size of it. We could have eaten at just about any fine restaurant in the world, with quiet, chic ambiance for the same. Neither of would recommend this place for a fine dinner. But for the target market who want to have a martini and a couple of shared plates, it may be a good choice. For seasoned foodies of a certain age, however, there are too many other options for that price point that don't provide such a challenge to converse or hear the server.

we had a wonderful dining experience. Tasty, elegant yet casual. The dishes are presented in a very attractive way.
Be the first to ReplyGreat brunch on a patio with our well behaved puppy
Puppy loves to eat out so we're always on the lookout for places to take him. While this cute place has special Sundays with meals for doggies, this was not one of those times. While we all devoured our fabulous French toast with deep fried quail (unusual combination but fabulous) and the super eggs benedict with the best potatoes, our hungry friend quite happily settled for a scrambled egg. We all had a great time!
Be the first to ReplyMuch improved over the last 12 months , almost as amazing as TRUST
Location - in Mission Hills area , a short Uber ride away from little Italy or gaslamp or mission valley area .
Ambience- I’d call it casual elegance . Chic, but not stuffy.
The food - much improved compared to a few months ago. Previously, I was not all that impressed by Fort Oak, but maybe they have finally got their acts together . Most of the dishes I sampled were very very good . Starting with small plates , I sampled the scallops which were fresh though a little blend - the slightly spicy sauce it came with was unique and refreshing. The charred caulilinis were great , as was the cavatelli dish ( the pasta was very tasty - though slightly greasy ). My favorite was the duck cassoulet dish though - the pieces of duck were tasty and cooked just right , while the rest of the stew was hearty and tasty.
I thoroughly enjoyed my meal at fort oak from a few nights ago . The quality has much improved since it first opened . I can’t wait to go back !
Super burger
Stopped in unexpectedly for a Saturday evening drink, from the street it’s a pretty spot with great design so our interest was peaked. We sat at the bar, as we didn’t have reservations, and got great service. The cocktails were fresh and tasty. We ordered the artichoke, the chipotle dipping sauce was awesome (somehow it tasted like it was a little carbonated). Then we split the burger and I have to say, it was the best burger we’ve had in San Diego in a very long time. That burger alone will bring us back.
Be the first to ReplySeriously Disappointing
Could this be a work in progress? It seems to fall short on every count: the food sounds better than it tastes, the cocktails combine rarefied ingredients with cheap canned crap, the venue seems more interesting from the outside than from the inside, the acoustics ensure that you hear every sound except those directed at you. The kitchen needs to learn that salt is for enhancing flavors not obfuscating them (and leaving you thirsty for days). The whole experience seemed like a good idea poorly executed—and overpriced. I would not go back but I feel like they’ll get it right, eventually.

Definitely one of the new hotspots in town. There is indoor seating in a beautiful dining room, outdoor seating on a quiet patio and a wonderful bar area for more casual dining. All 3 have their place and are beautifully decorated with excellent service. The food here is fantastic. We particularly enjoyed the vegetarian items including the roasted carrots, roasted baby beat salad and the goat milk cavatelli. I loved the venison sausage and also the duck cassoulet. Everything we ordered we shared among the four of us, which I highly recommend. Pricing is to be expected for exceptionally seasonal and fresh ingredients, so I think the other reviews are totally off base in this area. The wine list was also diverse and price friendly, and they have some wonderful nonalcoholic alternatives as well. I look forward to coming back!
