France-Soir South Yarra Reviews
Traditional French Restaurant
Love this restaurant, l have dined there many times and have never been disappointed. Itโs noisy and chaotic, but it adds a good vibe. I would recommend the steaks, beef bourguignon, snails, sardines, and any of the desserts on offer. I would recommend this restaurant, but be prepared for a noisy environment.
Very disappointed dinner ๐ฅ
After not having been to France Soir for several years we were so excited to have the opportunity to go again. We were actually sat at the exact same table, which had our anticipation of a great night enhightened. Whilst the service has improved, the quality of the food has deteriorated. Small serves, dry or over cooked meats, salad dressing was tasteless and fries were cold. The wines were ridiculously priced. All five of us were extremely disappointed. None of us will go again but the place was packed. I suspect for many of the diners, it is a place to be seen.
Disappointing.
Initial impression was a vibrant place with a French atmosphere, from then on it was all downhill. The service varied from patchy to downright rude. One waiter spent more time talking to his friends than looking after his tables, when asked to help us his reply was,โ canโt you see Iโm busy.โ The food varied, the escargots were good, the salad excellent but the duck was light on the sauce. The crepes were dry and again had little sauce. The wine service was slow. To top it off we had to ask twice for the bill, needless to say there was no tip!
Always a winner for 'Best French Restaurant' in Melbourne
One of my favorite French restaurants in Melbourne. Fantastic food, excellent staff, great wine and drinks, and an overall feeling of an authentic French bistro. You'll feel a bit like you are in Paris. Great spot and always a winner. Highly recommend!
Absolument Parfait!
Perfect in every way. First quality food, cooked perfectly and exceptional service. Terrific ambience. Just like a Parisian bistro. Looking forward to our next visit.
Food and wine, excellent. Venue, fail.
Great food and wine. Shame about the venue and the staff. This pokey hole-in-the-wall restaurant is very popular. The food is truly superb. But cramming so many tables into such a tight space is just plain ridiculous and greedy by the proprietors. The waiters kicked, bumped and brushed past me at least a dozen times during my lunch. Hardly an apology was offered. To be fair, there was barely enough room for the staff to squeeze past me and the next table, even though I could not sit any closer to the table (and I am not a large man). Please France Soir, take a couple of tables out and give your patrons a more comfortable setting to enjoy your wonderful offerings.
What a disappointment it was, we were stuck between 2
What a disappointment it was, we were stuck between 2 tables who clearly new each other, 6 on one and four on the other so they moved between the 2 with our table of four stuck in between them. They were obviously regulars as the staff were set on looking after them before anyone else. The place was horrendously noisy to the point we could hardly hear each other speak. The service was ordinary leaving far too much time to clear the table and to present the main course. We have been there before and didn't have the same amount of disappointment. The meals were ok but I would only rate the a 6/10 ,duck was rare and not edible for one on our table. We all agreed when we left Franc Soir that we would never return. As a group we have been to most of Melbournes best restaurants, I owned a successful restaurant some years ago so I think that I and we are more than equipped to provide this review. France Soir was extremely busy last night as I expect it is on every Saturday night Clearly the acoustics need to be addressed, solid timber parquetry flooring , walls and ceilings do nothing to address the issue of acoustics. There are so many excellent restaurants in Melbourne with many newcomers displaying great menus great presentation and excellent food. Sadly last night France Soir lost it for our group. No doubt it will continue to be listed as one of Melbournes best but not for me.
Not Rushing Backโฆ.
What to say about France Soir. Iโll start with the good, which is the food. The scallops with saffron sauce was creamy, rich and delicious. The veal chop with wild mushrooms and calvados was cooked to perfection. However there were a lot of things that let the night down. Seating was very cramped. It felt over-booked and over-crowded. Perhaps this explains the service. Side-dishes did not arrive until several of our party had already finished, one of the mains was the wrong order (but was never rectified), and wines were served in the wrong glasses. Some, or all of this, could have been chalked up to an off night but disappointingly, there was no attempt to address any of these things. Overall, the atmosphere is lively and fun and the food is good but one thing Melbourne is not short of, is fabulous places to eat so Iโm not sure that the food on its own is enough to make me return.
Noisy and needs more staff
Unbelievably noisy and understaffed service. Food was good but it was so hard to get a drink. We asked for the red and it came after two of our party had finished their mains.
Amazing!!
Would love to come back here again. Absolutely amazing staff who obviously take pride in taking care of the customers. Beautiful food.
Another great lunchโฆ
Another excellent lunch at France Soir.A place to see and be seen.First rate food including scallops with a dash of wasabi as starters and pork cutlets for main course.Always listen to the daily specials which has some very original dishes.A big plus that its BYO for lunches on a week day. Finally very attentive service.Regrettably there arenโt more restaurants like this.
Over-rated, Over-priced and past its use-by date
France Soir has been skating on its reputation for decades. I dont care about being placed at a table in between the toilet & the door to the kitchen; I can ignore the smug wait staff; I can forgive the ridiculous wine selection; but the food here is simply awful: A Pate en Croute that tasted of feet. A handful of gristle in a watery gruel they tried to pass off as Beef Bouguignon. We will never return. A much better bet is either the wonderful Entrecote in Greville St or L'Hotel Gitan in Commercial St. Both serve consistently excellent French fare - and are a lot friendlier to your wallet.
Tip or prepare for abuse
Food is great but the experience is spoiled by the wait staff, especially if you don't tip. Had the unfortunate experience of the worst of the waiters serving us. No assistance with the food descriptions, no assistance with the wine selection, no topping up of our glasses, nothing other than bringing us what we ordered. Despite this he created a scene when we didn't enter a tip when paying. More embarrassing for him than us as we returned the attitude in spades at which point he stormed off muttering in French. Spoiled what was a good meal and ensured we won't be back, especially with so many other French options in the area.
Over priced French Bistro
This is a typical French bistro. Food is good typical French rich sauce heavy in butter and cream. Service is good and has a good atmosphere however seating is very cramped. Found it overpriced for a French bistro meal. To top it off there was an automatic 10 per cent tip if youโre paying by card that is added to the transaction. I found this a little bit scurrilous as I was not given the choice.
An absolutely horrendous experience
Birthday dinner with my partner. Everything was good up until our mains. We arrived at the same time as a party of 4 sitting across from us (they had their entrees and mains and left before us while we were waiting for our mains). We ordered four entrees, two mains, two glasses of wine and a cocktail. We only had three entrees and one main. Our drinks arrived first as usual. The entrees were great, we had the special scallop dish with beurre blanc, oysters and escargot - all delicious. It was about 45 minutes of waiting for our mains before the waiter went to check on the kitchen. We knew it was a busy night and some delays may happen. We were okay with that. We waited another 15 mins to be served one of our mains - entrecote. My partner followed up with our second main and fourth entree. The waiter told us he didn't put through the second main because he thought we didn't want it. He also said our fourth entree is up on the bench waiting and can be served now.... one hour later. At this point we didn't want to wait any more and asked for the bill. As my partner was paying, another waiter came to clear our table. I was still eating. There was wine in my glass. He did not ask us if we were finished. He just came and cleared our table. This is what disappointed me the most. I rang the next day and spoke to a manager, told him what happened. In the conversation, he says "we have a rule if you ask for the bill, we clear the table." Even if that were the case, the waiter did not ask if I had finished my meal. It was just horrendous.
Brilliant French Bistro
Really enjoyed our very early dinner here. Tucked into window table watching the world go by. Great French standards - steak tartare, steak frites - amazing scallops, loads of bread and butter. Really good service - great value - canโt praise highly enough.
Delicious food and one of my favourite French restaurants
Delicious food and one of my favourite French restaurants if not the fave, in Melbourne. Located at the top of Toorak road always packed. The food is super tasty and excellentX loud. Bussing service. The cocktails and drinks are fantastic and I've been coming here for 30 years so definitely worth putting on you must have list, cause it's an experience.
Bistro
Not a bad place to get a pricey steak and chips with a wine I guess. Or a duck l'orange if you like it Can sit at the bar or at a table Busy restaurant but very good food and wine and cutlery and decor
