Superb and Perfect sushi experience
Absolutely perfect on May 19, 2023 at lunch for 3 persons. Sushi chef was very attentive and watched us enjoying everything. The staff was perfect. Enjoyed all the courses. We were a family party of 3 persons (one had the slightly smaller menu and the other two had the full menu). The chef helped us choose the sake bottles personally.

This was quite an experience in all parts of the dinner. We sat at a bar with six other people eight in total. At this restaurant because of the way, they serve it’s incredibly important to be on time. We were a few minutes late and we were ready two or three courses behind everyone else I read the number of the other reviews and I’ve absolutely no idea what they were talking about, we had one of the top sushi chefs in the world. Maybe they were there in the night when he was off. The experience was incredible and perfect service along with absolutely incredible sushi.

Seventeen wonderful tastes---all presented beautifully with great skill and care. This is a small restaurant that seats approximately 12-14 people at a counter. The counter is broken up so that there are two groups of approximately 6-7 people, each with their own chef. Our chef was very pleasant---although I am pretty sure he spoke little to no English. We knew going in that it would be expensive, so we were not surprised---the bill can be a bit confusing, but it was explained to us. Check out my photos for more details.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Sushi and Friendly Chef
Had lunch here with family and friends.
This is a really small restaurant.
We were seated in a L shaped bar counter.
We had the omakase course.
Some previous customers had reviewed this place negatively saying the Chef was rude and not foreigner friendly.
Our Chef was very friendly, explaining to us what each piece of sushi was. I joked with him in my limited Japanese which Japanese Actress I fancied (much to my wife's disappointment ....shooting me an I'd kill you later look). And would you believe that he told me this actress has patronized their restaurant before... bingo.
I guess my foolishness caused some amusement to a few Japanese lady diners sitting nearby to break out laughing at me.
Anyway back to the sushi... this place is good. And you can compare with my other sushi reviews to see if this place suits you. As I have learnt from watching too many sushi masters say on Youtube... no good if sushi is just fresh...its the rice that's important. And the rice was good:)
Do book in advance as seating is limited.
Would I come back..... sure in hope of bumping into my favorite Japanese actress.
Extremely overpriced for tourists
Sushi Kanesaka was, in truth, a let down, especially for the price point and in comparison to other restaurants of this caliber. Like many of the reviews say, the food is quite good and the fish quality is excellent. Most of the positives end there, unfortunately.
The service was poor - and at times worse than poor. Many elements seemed to lack attention to detail. We didn’t find the chef’s expertise to be worthy of that price either. He might have been in his late 20's or maybe 30 years old. So you're not paying a premium for experience or mastery. But then the service is bad, and worse than bad during stretches, so you're not paying a premium for service. What exactly are you paying this premium for? We weren't sure.
For the TL;DR crowd: you can get sushi this good at dozens of other places for much less money. Maybe even half the price. We felt ripped off because we were tourists.
Good food overly expensive
We arrived at this restaurant 10 minutes earlier as we were told that you get punished for being late.
The place, to our surprise, was very simple and half empty, they seated us in the far corner of the table.
The chef spoke basic English but was not very welcoming, once a Japanese couple joined, he started talking to them and laughing with them and we noticed they got additional portions, that we and the other foreigners didn’t get.
The food was good but was just place in front of us with no explanation, we asked and then he answered, we had to request ginger and soy sauce .
Overall the food was good, but not worth over $600 for a couple, we had very good sushi at other places for the fraction of the price.
It was a wonderful experience.
The chef was very friendly and knowledgeable with quite unestandable English. The sushi quality was just excellent and very fresh/ The chef's detailed explanations helped to follow the process and understand the ingredients. Regardless the high price it was a worthwhile experience!
