I live in NYC so I don't usually get sticker shock but this place is way overpriced. $26 for a tequila and soda. inattentive service. food average at best. weird tasting foods - I think there was curry in cocktail sauce & ketchup? the space is beautiful but I'll never go back.
Be the first to ReplyGreat variety of food options.
Bread basket had a great assortment and spreads. Brussels sprouts and rice sides dishes were flavorful. Nice atmosphere and not too loud.

Hav and Mar is another Marcus Samuelsson outpost and while this is my first time eating at one of his establishments, I can tell you I've been itching to try any of his restaurants. Hav and Mar is so unique and the incredible menu showcases his creative mind. The menu is Ethiopian meets Sweden...a nod to his roots. You wouldn't have known it since the flavors work so well together and he's incorporated other tastes from cuisines that otherwise you wouldn't have expected. Pete Wells from NYT coined the phrase Swediopian and mentions the gravlax dish that is an example of this perfect match up. For my dining experience and company in mind, I chose the classic comforts and a recommendation from our lovely server, Don. He was very attentive, explained the outline of the menu options and noted my allergy. He asked the right questions and gave us great suggestions. Appetizers: - scallop and sunchoke was excellent, seared to perfection. Beautiful presentation, a touch of heat with the red pepper on top and a tumeric based sauce. The chips added texture to the dish. - the signature Hav bread basket, super popular and highly recommended so of course I had to try. A delightful assortment of biscuits, blue cornbread, and injera crisp. The condiments to match were even more outstanding - tomato chutney and the shiro hummus. Best hummus I've had. It was so good, I had to Google it. Entrees and Sides: - banana leaf snapper was topped with a dill salsa Verde. Yum. It was a hearty fish portion and equally delicious coconut rice pairing. The salsa Verde didn't overpower the fish and all the flavors worked well together. Chef's kiss on this. - wild mushroom curry, I love mushrooms and this was a beautiful presentation from plating multicolored cauliflower, vegetable medley, a few varieties of sustainable mushrooms, and that gorgeous golden curry was just delectable. Totally recommend. - Hav yucca and sweet potato fries had a sprinkling of spices on them; packed a zesty and sweet flavor combination. Fantastic. More of that shiro hummus - yes! - oxtail rice was the best side for me. The meat was pulled apart and set on top of fermented bean and rice. The fermented bean is often used in Asian dishes so that was fantastic to see them use it. I was pleasantly surprised. I would totally order this again and not want to share it! I was too full to have dessert but it's totally worth a look. Photo attached. Fun fact, Hav means Sea and the standout menu showcases plenty of seafood dishes. It really is their specialty. Cannot wait to return!
Be the first to ReplyI came here Thursday night for happy hour and I must say it
I came here Thursday night for happy hour and I must say it was great. I ordered the lobster rolls and the lemon drop. The place is quite spacious and nicely decorated a great place for a date or dinner. I came alone so I sat at the bar and I loved it. I forgot the name of the bartender but she was really nice. The drink I ordered was the lemon drop and that was quite delicious and strong. It tasted fresh and had the right balance of flavors. The lobster roll was good the bun was toasted and it came in small rolls and the lobster meat was flavored and had a spicy flavor. I liked it very much. I also had the aquavita which was good and I liked it very much. I would come back and get the flight of the aquavita. Then as I was leaving I was able to taste the daiquiri which is a special item for black history month. The daiquiri is quite delicious. I will definitely come back to have dinner here. The whole staff worked in sync and I could see this because they were all very friendly and helpful.

Just like Marcus Samuelsson's other restaurant Red Rooster, Hav & Mar delivers on all fronts--food, service and ambiance. As a seafood focused restaurant with a creative spin, their menu is quite unique and exciting. The Hav Bread Basket was an unexpected hit, very well paired with various spread options. Queen's Ribeye was perfectly cooked but probably not as exciting as some of the other items on the menu, like Addis York, and I'll likely pass on it next time. The interior of the restaurant is beautiful with a large bar at the front, a few large high top tables right in front of the open kitchen (BEST SEATS in the house) and many tables for different party sizes. Servers are personable and very knowledgeable and the overall service was timely. Hav & Mar is a perfect spot for a date, quick drinks or group dinner, and the price point is actually reasonable considering the ambience and quality of food and service.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best experiences I've had in a while.
We were greeted with warm welcomes, seated in a good section with ease. Very accommodating staff! Our server Kwame was awesome. He was very knowledgeable, friendly and honest. The choices on the menu are appealing and several options to choose from. Reminder it is a seafood focus establishment. Back to food , our starters were scallops, Caesar salad, and a bread platter. All of it was very tasty. The plates were empty, I should have took a picture lol. We ordered several dishes for entree options. Snapper, whole branzino, bucatini, fried rice. Again all very tasty . We wanted to order the ribeye but they didn't offer well as an option. No sweat. Honestly we couldn't t stop eating lol. A good feast. The job was well done . We had a dessert which was similar to crème brûlée I didn't get to taste it. I was full comfortably full. Wonderful experience !

Hav & Mar's elegant atmosphere drew me in, with low lighting, cozy vibes, and stunning attention to detail. While a 15-minute wait wasn't a huge deal, the complimentary sparkling at the bar softened the blow. Service was excellent throughout - friendly, welcoming, and always attentive. Now, the food. It presented a mixed bag The bread basket was a dream, featuring heavenly fluffy biscuits, slightly sweet cornbread, and a delightful tomato chutney that had me wanting to lick the bowl clean. However, the trio of crudo was a major letdown, lacking flavor and failing to impress even with the hamachi offering a glimmer of hope. The uni Caesar salad was similarly underwhelming, simple, and pedestrian with missing uni and prawns saving the day with their good seasoning. But there were bright spots! The Grand Lobster Jubilee was fantastic, easily serving three with generous protein and an incredible oxtail rice base bursting with flavor. The crispy Brussels sprouts were another winner, perfectly crispy and a delicious complement to the entrees, although their price felt a bit steep. While the portions weren't as small as some pictures suggested, the food itself had room for improvement, especially considering the "Food Network tax" reflected in the prices of a celebrity chef's restaurant. However, the stunning service truly elevates the experience. The service was attentive and quick, even though the restaurant was busy. They fixed a mistake with our order promptly and apologized. They also checked on us frequently and made sure we had everything we needed. The hospitality was the highlight of the experience. Overall, Hav & Mar offers a beautiful dining experience with top-notch service. I think the food can be improved, especially for the price point. But the service and the atmosphere were excellent. I would recommend this restaurant if you are in the area, but I would not go out of my way to visit it. It's a good place for a special occasion, but not a regular spot.
Be the first to ReplyWhat a fantastic New Year's Eve experience at Hav & Mar!
What a fantastic New Year's Eve experience at Hav & Mar! The ambience set the perfect tone, and the service was excellent. The food was a delightful journey - the tuna tartare was not only delicious but left me longing for more. The fried chicken was a standout, making you want to savor every last bit off the bone. The crispy fries and Brussels sprouts were amazing sides that added to the culinary delight. And to cap it off, a great chocolate cake brought the evening to a sweet conclusion. Hav & Mar is definitely a place worth visiting to indulge in a memorable dining experience!

We enjoyed our experience here though I wouldn't say I was totally blown away. The menu looked very interesting however very limited. Ambience is beautiful, chic and modern. Their service is also great. I wasn't particularly pleased with the alcohol options, very few that I liked and mostly cocktails on the sweeter side. Not my preference but I still went ahead and ordered a Paloma. Tuna tartar was delicious as the app. Loved the softness and sweetness of blue corn bread However I have to say I was totally impressed by banana leaf snapper as the mains. The coconut rice was actually served as a rice cake which I found very interesting and the snapper was laden with delicious dill salsa, with side of Brussels sprouts. I will highly recommend this dish and would definitely reorder. Two of my friends ordered portions of Havatini each, which is basically bucatini with sea food. They enjoyed their dish but found it a bit too rich and on the heavier side. We were tempted to try the dessert but stopped ourselves. I think we got the limited menu coz we went for weekend brunch. I would not go out of my way to visit this restaurant but will definitely recommend you give it a try.
Be the first to ReplyFABULOUSNESS through and throughout.
This seafood forward restaurant really left an impression on me. I was dazzled by the open kitchen and ceilings. Service was above and beyond. The attention to details in hospitality was apparent and greatly appreciated. The food was marvelous. Standout dishes for me were the Scallops & Sunchoke, Havatini, Aunties Greens and Blue Cornbread (the greens and cornbread combo was IYKYK ). I did find the Snapper being over cooked but appreciated the crispy rice. I was completely underwhelmed by the Queens Ribeye. The Steak was cooked perfectly but didn't have a "wow" factor. I also started with the Hummingbird cake that was on special and although it was good it lacked layers. The cake was sweet on sweet on sweet, nothing to break up that sweetness. Overall Hav & Mar was a great experience and I'll def be back. Also let me shoutout Ariel our server who was a complete delight and took great care of us.
Be the first to ReplyHav & Mar was amazing.
I have to give credit to Sheena and Eleno behind the bar. They made our first visit a wonderful and well rounded experience. The quality of the drinks served.... Their knowledge of the menu, couldn't have asked for better customer service experience. My boyfriend had the chicken dish and he legit said it was the best meal he ever had, along with the drink Eleno made him which was christened "the David" We will be back to try the dessert and can't wait to hear what Sheena suggests to pair with it I appreciate when the service team makes you feel special and at home .... So this is a well deserved shoutout!
Be the first to ReplyWe felt very welcome from the moment we walked in.
The staff is so friendly and courteous! Our server, Sheena was VERY knowledgeable and recommended drinks and dishes that hit the spot! We sat at the high top chef's counter, and kitchen staff was very real and down earth. You could tell that they all loved what they were doing. Sous chef, Aries, made us complimentary deserts. She was awesome! We even had the honor of having the infamous Marcus Samuelsson come to our table and struck up a conversation. The overall experience definitely made our night! I would definitely recommend!
Be the first to ReplyThey got everything there.
The food, the ambience, the drinks and the staff are all top notch. It's a Marcus Samuelson restaurant so you already know what to expect. I loved everything about it. The regular menu items all taste amazing. I don't even like Brussels sprouts but everything the touch tastes exquisite. Just go.

Service was so so had to wait quite a bit even with a reservation, also after sitting the server did not show up for 10 mins and did not get us water for a while. Food was so so Havatelli was really good! I recommend :) Everything else was very small portion and lawful neutral. The dessert donut was overly sweet and not very good despite enthusiastic recommendation from server. Ambience very loud I couldn't really hear my bf across the table Drinks were pretty bad My drink tasted really watered down and my bf's drink tasted like robbing alcohol on rock Overall For the price of roughly 130-150 per person i wouldBe unlikely to return but I don't regret giving them a try...
Be the first to ReplyTruly a memorable meal.
Unique dishes - there were 6 of us and we all had different first, second, and third courses. All were totally unique and utterly delicious. Service was friendly and not rushed - we were there for 3 hours on a Saturday night. Lovely decor. The bread basket is a must. Foodies-run to this place if you can get a reservation.

I'm from Chicago and saw the chef on the Today show a week before. It was perfect timing for my upcoming trip to NYC. One the best meals I've had in a while...everything thing was delicious and the Sancerre was the perfect compliment.
Be the first to ReplyThe food was delicious, a wonderful focus on seafood.
The havatelli, tomato chutney (comes with bread basket) and the shiitakes from the scallop dish were favorites. I suggest not being thrown by the odd suggestion of family style ordering and just order regularly, for singular portion dishes. Was confused by the server's different suggestions and comments about format when we were ordering so maybe we misunderstood her. I thought the service (server) could be better (clearer; more relaxed, while still attentive) and that what they say when the server greets you and tells you about the ordering format should be re-evaluated. The staff delivering dishes and clearing the table were perfect.

We went on a Friday for a date night and I would say the overall experience was just okay. The most noticeable issue was the service. We arrived around 15 minutes early to our reservation and opted to wait at the bar. It had people at every seat but it was still odd that not a single bartender noticed as just standing there without offering a drink menu. We were however seated timely so that's good - the space is certainly lovely and has a nice energy. Our waiter alternated between extremely "on" when explaining every aspect of the menu and then vanishing for a while. Eventually we were ready to order every item quickly to avoid him disappearing again - and even then it took a very long time just to get our drinks. I realize it's a busy night and the restaurant hasn't been open that long, but our experience did not reflect the reviews that others have been leaving specifically about the service. The food did come out timely though after that, but once we had finished our drinks, no one checked on us or asked if we wanted another until much later - again just a bit odder than I would have expected.Foodwise, we got the bread basket, ceviche, and scallop small plates, along with mermaid black rice, snapper, and brussel sprout side. All of them were well made and very flavorful but nothing that I would necessarily dream about going back for.
Be the first to ReplySuper delicious, interesting food and very warm ambiance
Super delicious, interesting food and very warm ambiance and decor. Music was noticeably all bangers. My only critique and the only reason I'm deducting 1 star is that I solo dine very often, and it was a bit of a weird service experience here. They don't take reservations for 1 on Resy, so I emailed them. They said I can eat at the bar, but I like to insist with restaurants that I eat at a table like a normal party. I understand they lose money that way, but I prefer not being pushed aside to a bar section just because I'm a solo diner. So I asked for a table.I should've taken a picture, but my table was at quite an awkward location. 90% of my view was just a wall, shelf, or a pillar. I barely got any ambiance or people watching like I love to do at restaurants haha. Similar to this, my back was to a walkway/intersection in the restaurant. I had to turn around to get a server's attention. Further, one of the server's admitted she straight up forgot to check on me. I kind of timed it, and it was about 30min (!!!) without a single server checking on me. As I said, it was also awkward to have to fully turn around in my chair just to try and get a server's attention. So I'm glad I tried this place, and the food was delicious. However, based on my experience, I don't think I would recommend it to solo diners.

Hav & Mar is a fun, exciting new seafood venture in the western-most part of Chelsea. Though it's a bit cumbersome to get to, it's worth the extra crosstown mileage. You'll find food and beverages that are inspired, creative, eclectic and tasty, with strong influences from both Ethiopian and Swedish cultures. Not to mention, the decor is also gorgeous. Hav & Mar is equal parts date spot and a restaurant to impress out-of-towners and/or parents. Upscale but without pretense, Hav & Mar is a fabulous addition to the Manhattan dining scene, and a dream come true for seafood lovers.Came here at around 8pm on a Saturday night. Though I had read a bit about the restaurant prior to making a reservation, I did not realize how big the space was. Grand and sprawling, sophisticated and chic, with walls adorned with impressive installations by Black artists. It's an immersive experience of the best kind. Drinks are where the Swedish influence shines through. Many drinks feature aquavit, which is a Scandinavian spirit with notes of caraway and anise. I've long been a fan of aquavit, yet it seems few people outside of the mixology enthusiasts have heard of it. Many are wary: obviously, it is quite different than your vodkas, rums, gins, whiskeys and agave-based spirits. But if you're going to try it, this is the perfect place for some experimenting. In addition to some of the signature cocktails featuring aquavit, there's a list of house infusions that can be served straight and chilled, as a highball, as a shot with a chaser, in a flight. If I could do the experience over, I'd love to sample one or two of the house-made spirits just to get a sense of their essences. We ended up sampling a good chunk of the cocktail menu, though, and most of it was excellent. To start, I got the Skål-Skål (mint & dill aquavit, green apple, aloe vera, cucumber, yuzu-lime soda), which was a bright and refreshing highball that had spa-like vibes thanks to the aloe and cucumber. My husband started with the Jet Set (caribbean & indonesian rum, hibiscus, yuzu, swedish punsch, pineapple, lime), which was bright, floral, fruity and citrusy, super well balanced. I then got the Hav & Martini (vodka & gin, lemon oil, sea salt, dry vermouth, house-pickled garnish) which was super clean and hit the spot. My husband got the Black History Month special, which was the We Are From The Water, Too (uncle nearest 1884 tennessee whiskey, jack from brooklyn sorel, uncle waithley's ginger brew, lime juice, float of equiano rum). Kind of like a sexed up dark and stormy. And to end, I got the Milk & Honey (dill aquavit, cocchi americano, salers, carrot, distilled honey, whey), which was spirit-forward but impeccably smooth, slightly sweet and slightly vegetal. As expected, much of the food here comes from the sea. If I could eat one type of protein for the rest of my life, it would easily be seafood. The variety here is fantastic, and it's hard to narrow the choices down. I'd highly recommend sharing here, as we did. The menu is fun and creative, equal parts comforting and exciting. Eats, below:Hamachi with Black Ceviche w/ cippolini onions, granny smith apples, fennel: A+One of the stars of the night. Superbly fresh fish, sweet and earthy with a little sourness, really expert interplay of flavors. And beautifully presented. Swediopian w/ berbere-cured salmon, mustard seed caviar, buckthorn: B-This one looked exciting but it fell flat in execution. An innovative concept but overall, pretty bland. I think if approached properly it could be transformed into a star dish. Endive & Bok Choy w/ grilled baby gem, charred grapes, toasted hazelnuts: AEndive salads in the winter are my favorite thing. Really cool to see it paired with bok choy, which is a combo I've never experienced before. Nice blend of raw/cooked, with the perfect amount of cheese dusted atop the whole thing.Corn Wrapped Snapper w/ crispy coconut rice, salsa verde, radish: A-I expected this dish to be a bit more exciting but it was still solid. The fish was fresh and seasoned well, though it could've packed some more flavor. I also thought the fish would come out wrapped, but it was just served atop a corn husk -- I suppose it might've been wrapped when cooked. The salsa verde was yummy and while I tend not to like going overboard with sauce, I would've loved more of it in this instance. Brussels Sprouts w/ aji dulce, pearl onions, suya: ADon't sleep on the sides!! These were so yummy and definitely flexed some subtle creativity.
