We visited Hawksmoor on Air Street on a Sunday evening. We knew that our 6.30 booking time meant they couldn’t guarantee that the Sunday Roast would still be available but we were happy to have steak or fish instead. We arrived early so settled in at the bar for a pre dinner cocktail, the ‘Reformed Pornstar’ cocktail was very tasty. It got to 6.50 and we’d been forgotten about even though we’d let our drinks waiter know we were waiting for our table in the restaurant. Finally after enquiring about our table a second time we were taken through the the dining room. The restaurant is huge and nicely decorated. We were sat in a booth which was comfortable but very warm. As the Sunday roast wasn’t available by the time we ordered we went for 2 rib eye steaks medium rare, one fillet steak medium well and one Dover sole as the monkfish was also sold out. One of the rib eye steaks was quite fatty in parts and the fillet rather dry. Disappointing as this restaurant is supposedly renown for great quality meat. I went for ‘buttered English greens’ as my side dish and as it was £5.50 I was really disappointed when a dish of greasy cabbage came out! I expected a mix of green beans, broccoli, peas? I guess I should have asked the waiter exactly what was in the dish but yes it was rather underwhelming. My husband had the mac and cheese which had a nice crumb top on it, our other sides of sweet potatoe and triple cooked chips were nice. We had 2 desserts and 3 espresso martinis to end. We’d had a bottle of red wine during the main course. It ended up being £240 per couple. It was a special occasion so we knew it was going to be expensive but the service was slow and meal wasn’t ‘wow’ so didn’t feel the high price was quite worth it I’m afraid. I appreciate we went at a busy time but they looked to have plenty of staff working but none focusing on our area.
