AVOID
AVOID. I’ve been to Hutong in London and had a great experience. I’ve been to the NYC location once before and also had a great experience. I revisited last night and was completely shocked. Firstly, I made a reservation through their website at 8:30PM. About two hours before, I called and asked about pushing the reservation back to 9:30PM, as I had the inclination that we would be running late. On the phone, there were no problems. My party and I were able to wrap up what we were doing earlier than anticipated; so we arrived at the restaurant at 8:30PM instead. We checked in and were informed that we could not be seated until 9:30PM. The restaurant had been fully committed. On second-thought, I’m not even sure how we were able to make an 8:30PM reservation in the first place—or a reservation at all—as the restaurant was jam-packed. In the meantime, we were led to the bar to have cocktails—which was also on a first-come first-serve basis. We were not told that the main dining room was closed for a private buy-out and also not told that we could order from the food menu at the bar. Simply, we were told someone would be with us at or around 9:30PM. Fine. My mother was starving; we ordered a few cocktails. We indicated to the bartender that we were waiting for a table; he was nice enough. At around 9:20, I started to inquire what the status was of our table. At this point, my entire party was ravished. All I was told was that we would be notified when the table was ready. 9:30. 9:40. Nothing. 9:45. Nothing. Okay. So I ask the bartender again and he grabs whom I now know is the General Manager—a gentleman with a French accent. He comes over, absolutely unapologetic, and says “we will make it right; I will send appetizers” in a condescending tone. Okay. It’s busy. He then asks again, in a condescending tone, if there are any dietary restrictions and walks away. I then realized that if appetizers are coming, we could have ordered from the food menu while sitting at the bar the entire time. So we start to. At around 9:55PM, the GM flies out with the appetizers. He places them in front of my mother and she mentions that we had been waiting for a long time. In what appears to be the twilight zone, he starts to belligerently yell that it has only been twenty minutes since our reservation and we are complaining; he starts to ask my party what else he can do—in the most disgustingly mocking tone. He starts talking about us to the wait staff RIGHT IN FRONT OF US. At this point, hungry and absolutely turned-off by the petulant behavior of a child masquerading as a grown man, I cursed him right out. I asked for the check for drinks, which he said again, condescendingly, not to worry about. At this point, diners were engaged in the unprofessionalism and sheer inability of this idiot to do his job—a large part of which is service recovery. We left without any food. In hindsight, I will return today just to pay the bill for four cocktails and get details for further escalation. Nobody in my party needs a hand-out; the lack of empathy with this individual is jarring. He felt as if throwing food at us for free would have us roll on the floor; he addressed us as cattle. I don’t even have the words. Avoid.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food and excellent service
Par Excellence was an understatement to the food taste and service met the waiter Mr Alex though a veteran but his knowledge to dishes and service was a great help for Hutong Been to Hutong in uae but in New York if you have not had a meal your trip to USA is incomplete
Be the first to ReplyFamily Xmas eve
I was there with my family on Christmas Eve, very tasty dishes well prepared, really good, the fantastic duck as tender as butter. all perfect. dishes like at a Micheline Star restaurant. Very elegant and welcoming place, excellent service. I highly recommend it. Amazing experience
Be the first to Replyorder the peking duck
Superb peking duck, both parts. And the saute chicken dish. Skip snow peas. Saute noodles excellent also.
Be the first to ReplySimply Fantastic
Especially coming from a Chinese food desert like the one where my wife and I live (think all-you-can-eat crab rangoon and sweet and sour pork) the food was nothing less than amazing. The service was not simply on-point - it was warm, welcoming, and friendly. This was a real highlight of our brief NYC visit!
Be the first to ReplyFood lets it down..
I can't recommend this restaurant as the food really wasn't that nice. Service was fine, it is very pricey but then the food arrived and it was tasteless and not that hot. Table next to us sent theirs back as it was cold.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, slow service
Suggested by the hotel concierge as it is a tradition in NY to eat Chinese on the 25th of December we booked a table for our Christmas lunch. The food was really really good and made up for the slow service and the rude hostess that welcomed us.
Be the first to ReplyWorth the splurge!
The food and service were fantastic. Be prepared to drop some $$$. -Only thing was that they were slightly off on the timing of the meal. We received our rice and noodles after the 7 of us had devoured our meal. We declined their offer to compensate. Note their offer was done proactively! All 7 of us highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyWorst food and worst customer service! Overpriced
Worst Chinese restaurant! The food is so terrible and very expensive. We got a chicken dish and they brought us a huge dish , we thought it’s so huge but when we look at it , it was full of chillies and a half breast of chicken cut so tiny and so dry with no sauce . We brought our 16 years old child for his birthday, we had a cake for her , they refused to have it unless we pay them 30 dollars to cut it ! It was a joke !!! A very expensive restaurant with mediocre food and lack of good customer service!

Service was disconnected and relatively poor for this standard of restaurant. Booked the flaming duck but this was disappointing overall and in my opinion was overpriced. The other dishes were mediocre at best. On a positive the venue is nice and the rum cocktail I had was lovely. To conclude it was overpriced for what we received.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing Sezchuan food - impreccable service
We went to Hutong for our Christmas lunch. They had their normal menu. What a treat! We loved the dim sum platter, the eggplant tempura, the pea shoots tossed, the red lantern (soft shell crab) etc. We ended up paying 120$ pp (excl tax and tip) with half bottle of wine each. A bargain for this quality of food and its execution. There are some real cooks in the kitchen. Our waiter was excellent and very helpful in assisting in the choice of dishes. I will certainly go back for lunch or dinner.

Expensive for what it is. May have liked/enjoyed more if I hadn’t been to the Hutong in Hong Kong - which is amazing. Food in NY is average, cocktails mediocre, decor average, service average. There is just nothing exceptional- which was super disappointing as I was so looking forward to dinner.
Be the first to Replyover priced and under whelming
Booked the 'flaming duck experience' for my son's 21st birthday. Sat on a table in the corner of the restaurant and two of us were facing the wall. Restaurant so dark we struggled to see our food. Flaming Duck experience very under whelming, especially given the price. The cooking process looked dramatic but wouldn't bother doing it again...just watch it being cooked for someone else's table. Restaurant lacked atmosphere. Waiter nice enough but not very attentive. Might be better if you didn't have the flaming duck, but to be honest i think you could have a more exciting time else where and spend less
Be the first to ReplyNice food
Food is good, with a wide range of options. Recommendations from staff were good. Sizes are small which allows to share plates, a plus I would say. Recommendable.

We were a table of 4 on Saturday 15 October 2022 The initial service with Nick was great. He was lovely but he disappeared at 10pm & the rest of our evening service wasn’t great. Food wise: the whole flaming duck at $125 was very disappointing - not crispy enough, very fatty & very under seasoned & even the table side experience was lacklustre & not worth the exorbitant cost. The shrimp rolls were tasty. We also ordered shrimp kung po with side orders of rice & noodles which arrived first & were eaten before the shrimp arrived. No one wants to eat sides without the mains. We ordered dessert. 30 minutes later it still hadn’t arrived. We asked for the dessert to be cancelled & for the check. The very moody maitre d’ / floor manager immediately appeared with the dessert even though we cancelled it. We assumed it was an apology & on the house so we ate it while paying the check only to notice it was charged. The total bill for 1 appetiser, 1 duck, 1 main & 2 sides was almost $500 (we also had Coke & 3 glasses of wine) and was sadly not worth it. Only Nick the wonderful Server made me leave a more positive review.
Be the first to ReplyNot worth it
I had meat puff pastry and there was cartilage inside I showed it to the waiter and manager apologised but still this isn’t the quality you expect from this restaurant Other Hutongs in Honk Kong orLondon will never serve such low quality food and the rest of the food wasn’t impressive at all
Be the first to ReplyOur favorite Chinese Restaurant in NYC
The food you get here is not the normal chinese fare. The tastes are quite different & the presentations are also very nice. The Crispy Prawn Rolls ( $23), Mushroom Bao ($22, & looks like a mushroom, but isn't) are excellent. The Wagyu Beef Millefeulle ($22) is spicy but very good and the pastry does flake off nicely. The Red Lantern softshell crabs are also spicy but wonderful ($57) and plentiful and magically presented. The Mapo Tofu ($18) is nice & spicy & have it with plain rice ($3). The Pea shoots Wok tossed ($18) are also quite good. Ambiance & service are excellent.
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced and so not worth it!
I feel like I've been scammed. The food was so expensive and not even tasty. Sichuan Shredded Beef appetizer was basically crispy noodles, no hint of beef anywhere in the dish or in the flavor. Kung Po Prawns entree had very mushy prawns; Sanchen Spiced Chicken entree was a bowl of diced chili peppers from which the pieces of chicken had to be hunted down and extracted, and even then, the chicken was quite flavorless. (To the restaurant's credit, they did not charge us for the chicken when we complained). The overpriced entrees did not even include rice. A bowl of fried rice (FRIED RICE!!) cost $17. Wow. At least the fried rice was good. Maybe this is a new variation of Chinese cuisine that we're not familiar with, but we did feel quite foolish spending so much money on Chinese food that could have been half the price and much tastier elsewhere.
Be the first to ReplyUnpleasant atmosphere, very unimaginative selection of food, over-priced
It's more of a night club with house music, rather than a pleasant place for dinner. Lighting totally inadequate, 6 people shoved into a booth wide enough for 2.5. The menu was very underwhelming...lots of spicy, no sweet and I can't remember seeing sour. It was advertised as Northern Chinese, but was really Sichuan (lots of spicy dishes). The flaming duck was good, but a long ways below my Beijing duck experiences. The server tried to be as responsive as possible, but the manager was unresponsive except to say he was sorry.

I came here with my family for dinner based on my dad's previous experience eating here, and we were all thoroughly impressed with the quality of the food. We all have different food requirements (I don't eat shellfish and my SIL is allergic to carrots), but the restaurant accommodated us very well! The mushroom bao, the vegetarian spring rolls, the kung po tofu, and the roasted spiced cod dumplings were all sublime! My dad forgot his card here, and they immediately called him so he could return to get his card. There was slight confusion with service - our waitress would ask if we needed a menu, and then a separate server would stop by and ask the same question - but otherwise, everything went smoothly.

I am a foodie and thought the food was amazing. We ordered the dumpling sampler, duck(must order) and duck fried rice. The duck fried rice was just ok. Only complaint was we were seated really close to someone who was pretty loud and distracting. Felt like he was seated at our table.

Just had dinner tonight at Hutong. Can’t even explain how good it was. Really outstanding. Maybe the best meal ever. Congrats!
Be the first to ReplyBEWARE
While the food and decor at this place is great, the customer service is absolutely atrocious to the point where it’s laughable! First of all the hostess was the most cold, unwelcoming person I’ve ever encountered at a so called “5 star restaurant.” Secondly, the meal that I requested (according to their website) needed to be prepaid in order to even book the reservation, which was all fine until they brought the check to the table and I saw that not only did they charge twice for the same meal BUT the price on the check was drastically different from what was prepaid. We brought the issue to the waiters attention (whom we had to interrupt another server to instruct him to come back to our table after he ignored us for about 20min while pretending to be “busy” running to other tables) and instead of explaining the huge difference in price and correcting it he had the biggest, nastiest attitude, laughed and pretended it wasn’t a real issue and that this habit of switching menu prices is something that happens all the time and he even stated that “it’s not fraud and they can charge any price they want.” At this point we requested the manager, explained the situation and he seemed to be just as clueless. The manager didn’t even understand that their restaurant requires the meal to be prepaid in order to book, he was also unaware of the booking agent that handles their restaurant reservations and he could not explain why the prepaid meal was way more than the amount presented on the check.
I personally think everyone involved in this situation should be fired. This restaurant needs to close for a few days and the staff needs to take a field trip to an actual 5 star restaurant (i.e. Peak in Hudson Yards) and observe their team and the way they run their business and treat customers.
Stunning
Stunning. The dumplings, tasty. The food quality superb. But the service was outrageously great. Highly recommend. May Emblem Award winner!
Be the first to ReplyTHEY WILL DO ANYTHING FOR A CLIENT.................THEY'RE THE BEST
Having recently had OPEN HEART SURGERY, my cardiologist has been telling me to eat a LOW SALT diet. He's a very thorough man and asked me what my favorite restaurants are. Naturally, at the top of the list is Hutong. He suggested that I speak with the manager.....which I did. Pam huddled with the chef and he/she started me with asparagus and then halibut and a green vegetable. Everything was wonderful and didn't interrupt Dale and our friends who ate off the normal menu.....also wonderful. True to the way this restaurant is operated, staff kept assuring me that they were looking out for me. THEY'RE THE BEST.
