Don’t!
Worst restaurant ever! 4 items on menu for appetizers and main courses each. Four people ordering different items, all uneatable. Prices outrageous. Staff very well trained in overselling. Service very slow. Do not fall into their trap!
Be the first to ReplyAn Intimate Setting for Friends or Romance
Friends and I made early dinner reservations at this lovely restaurant on a residential street based on Yelp reviews. We were not disappointed. The setting was inviting; outside tables in an Italian inspired courtyard with 100+ year old wisteria vines as the roof. A farm to table approach dictates the daily menu. On the day we went we enjoyed tasty goat cheese bruschetta and yummy desserts of carrot cake and a strawberry parfait. There were several options for entrees but be aware that everything is a la carte. A pricey but perfect setting for intimate dinners or gatherings of friends.
Be the first to ReplyGood food. Service OK
Mezza plates were good. Greek and Italian. Octopus, swordfish, mushroom and gnocchi dishes all tasty. Drinks good. Menu limited "by the pandemic." A little overpriced. Service was slow. The introductory pandemic lecture on wearing of the mask at all times except when your fork is moving to your mouth is a bad first impression. The hard sell for the Chef's Table option (quite expensive) is off-putting. Servers were nice enough. The crowning blow from "the service" though was the presentation of the check some 15 minutes after we had to ask for it with an automatic 22% tip, despite a party of only four, slow service generally, and a propane heater that went out when we sat down and wasnt replaced until well after the main course was service. I would have left 15%, but 22% after all that?
Be the first to ReplyReally Bad Service that Ruined the Rest of the Experience
The restaurant setting is very nice. However, when we first sat down our host told us there is a 1 hour and 15 minute time limit. We were like OK seems short, but that should be enough time. Our server comes by never gives us his name or appears interested at all in conversing with us. It took 30 minutes for our food to come. When it finally did we had 20 minutes left on our time to order anything else. Our server would keep passing right by us and never asked how our food was, never asked if we needed anything else. We would actively look around like we needed something and our table was right next to the kitchen, so it should have occurred to him to check in with us. but he didn't. A very nice gentleman saw that we were looking around and asked what we needed and he brought it. Our server never returned to our table except at the end to clear our table and bring our check (we kept thanking him, and he had no response). When we do get the check we see a 22% automatic gratuity (I think for COVID). In any other setting it would be fine, but our server did not come over more than once. So the fact that they put an automatic 22% for next to no service was annoying. I asked to speak to a manager and she did accommodate us . But my intention wasn't too get free stuff, it was to say that time of service is absolutely unacceptable for a place that is so highly regarded. Overall, the service alone would probably make me never go back. The food was pretty good, but the experience was so bad that it was completely overshadowed.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Food and Service
I was fortunate enough to eat here right before DC closed all its restaurants. We shared a few small plates (Beet salad and Focaccia - both great) and the Greek Style Half Chicken for two - Delicious! The ambience (we sat inside near the fire) is cozy and inviting. Our server was Jenny C. - who is absolutely amazing! She was patient in helping us select a bottle of wine, offering samples to make sure we were 100% happy with the wine we selected. Additionally, she was friendly, humorous, and made the evening more enjoyable.
I look forward to returning to this restaurant when I return to DC.
Nice lunch in a unique place
Were visiting Washington (just as the city was shutting down for Covid19) and sought lunch between Dupont and Logan Circle. Iron Gate has a narrow entrance and requires a bit of paying attention to find it. Once in, the setting has a courtyard for good weather and somewhat intimate inside dining areas. On a Friday it was not crowded, but that may have been due to virus concerns. The food is Mediteranean, with emphasis on Greek. The wine list has many Greek offerings. Crystal provide nice service. The food is flavorful. The serving sizes where adequate, but not large. The roasted carrots were notably good. We had hoped to find the octopus on the lunch menu, but it is apprently only on the dinner menu. We recommend this restaurant and if in this part of DC, would consider returning. If this is your first time to DC, quality dining is expensive relative to many other American cities. The cost of Iron Gate's items may seem a bit high, but relative to other dining venues of this quality and uniqueness, it is modest to lower price for a finer dining restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyReally deserves a top rating for the stellar meal, service, presentation
Wanted to catch up on the Iron Gate's well-thought out menu selections so went with friends who enjoy sharing a variety of dishes. Wasn't disappointed in anything. Food was a standout, from oysters and beet salad, to focaccia, gnocchi, and octopus, everything was well presented and freshly prepared (at the right temperature, not cold or heated over). I seldom give an excellent rating and this was well earned. My colleagues much enjoyed the wine selections and the guidance form the wait staff, as I enjoyed my sangria! Thumbs up on the semifreddo.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent gnocchi
I had the gnocchi, which were excellent. My wife had the shrimp scampi, which were not to her liking. The dish was rather bland--not what we expected for shrimp scampi. The waitress recommended a nice red wine. We will probably go back and both have the gnocchi!
Be the first to ReplyFood was great, service not so much
Food was great, the service was average.
The menu is diverse enough to have a few small plates and a substantial meal. The ragu and the pork tasting had great flavors presented in an interesting way. While the food was great the service was average at best.
We had a reservation but had to wait a while for our table. The server didn’t review the menu, and wasn’t helpful at all making recommendations or clarification of the dishes. New plates and silverware were slow to come out with new dishes, if at all. It could have been so much better with great attentive service.
Enjoyed it
My wife and I last ate here 36 years ago, for our rehearsal dinner. It’s still going strong! It is mostly small plates with a Mediterranean focus.
We started with bruschetta with goat cheese, butternut squash, pistachios, pumpkin and sunflower seeds. Very good.
The gnocchi with sausage ragout was to die for, and I usually am not a gnocchi fan because it is so heavy. But these were small and the sauce so tasty, i really enjoyed.
We had grilled lamb sausage -excellent; a beet salad with grapefruit, and a couple of other plates. Though this was “small plates,” there was enough food to make you feel like you got a good taste of dish, and neither of us went away hungry.
The food was very good, as was the service.
The restaurant has a great patio, but it was too cold for us. Lovely service, as well, and a good beer and wine list.
Best brunch in DC
I came here for brunch with two other friends. We ordered some dishes from the menu (mainly vegetarian sides and a meat burger) and everything was delicious and super well cooked. We paired our brunch with a Vermentino orange wine, which was also a pleasant discovery. Great find!
