Jean-Georges at The Connaught London Reviews
Fantastic service doesn’t manage to save the day
At first appearance everything is there to make our visit an evening to remember: great decor in one of the world’s legendary hotel names and amongst the most friendly staff on the planet. Unfortunately as you sit down it dawns on you that the comfortable looking armchairs and low tables are, in fact, going to make eating a meal a somewhat less than pleasant time. The menu reads ok, with pricing to match the location (and London’s reputation as one of the most overpriced city on earth to eat out), which I don’t even mind. Where I do draw the line however is at the appalling execution of the dishes: the criminally overcooked sea bass with an exceedingly peppery skin tastes quite indescribable whilst the mash potatoes literally begs for the mere thought of butter or cream. I just didn’t have the heart to prolong the experience with desserts. The whole affair was seriously underwhelming and literally saved by the staff’s attitude. Jean-Georges - if I may be so bold as to call you by your first name - if you somehow do read this review I suggest you jump on a plane and come and salvage the aura attached to your name (as evidenced by your New York restaurants) ASAP.
Hmmmm…..not great, distinctly average
Champagne afternoon tea at the Connaught. Would I recommend? Mmmmm, it was ok.....unremarkable, distinctly average given the cost. We were seated promptly, then approached by no less than 3 waiters over tke next 20 minutes or so taking our drinks and tea orders then nothing.....we waited.....and waited. when eventually the champagne arrived it was good. The tea was nice but let's face it, it's tea. The sandwiches came up on our own individual plates and were well, ok. The bread was like supermarket sliced bread, really nothing special and the fillings didn't have a whole lot of flavour. The scones were warm and were good. The other pastries weren't very inspiring. There was a young toddler running around the whole time dropping scones everywhere (not the fault of the staff but you would think they'd ask the mother to contain him). The tables were all very crammed in and the whole thing just seemed very busy. Would I go back? No
Great wine service and professional team.
An excellent dinner and great service. Particularly enjoyed the wine list and great recommendations and professional service from our Sommelier Harshal. He was terrific- That was our second visit to the restaurant in the past year. We were visiting London. We look forward to another visit in the summer.
Average
Invited here for the Valentines afternoon tea, we both felt it was not as good as in other hotels. Firstly, the tables are squashed together, and you feel on top of the next guests. No privacy. The room layout, table setting, crockery are all disappointing. I think it looked like IKEA. Pretty pastries, basic sandwiches, nothing to make you think wow what an experience. Other places have more finesse and create a superior experience. It's all about the details and feels like not much thought has gone into the style here. Good service.
Simply amazing
The service , food and menu and the selection at JC at the Connaught was a dining masterpiece was amazingly good. The dishes some were the classic JC like the egg caviar was great.
Excellent staff!
I have gone to the Jean-George at the Connaught frequently over the last few weeks with clients from out of town. While the food and drink selection is great and the setting impressive, what stood out to us the most was the incredible staff. Everyone from the waitstaff to management were incredible, accommodating and welcoming. My special thanks to Vincenzo, Martina, Fabrizio and Edward who all always went above and beyond to make our visits special. They exceeded my expectations and we will definitely be back.
High Tea!
We went here for high tea. As Americans really no concept of this but wow. What a way better mid afternoon tradition than a siesta. The restaurant is very nice/contemporary. Service was top notch. Everyone gets to choose which tea and champagne they'd like. The "tray" of sandwiches and sweets/cakes available was superb. I wish I had one of those sandwiches now!
Afternoon tea.
Afternoon tea on New Year’s Day. Warm welcome and taken swiftly to our table. Comfortable seating and table presented well. The first food was brought to the table with no explanation as to what it was. We did wait a while for our chosen tea which arrived after the sandwiches and half way through the pastries and cakes. In total we were served by 5 different members of staff who seemed a little busy on the day. We had to ask for additional tea which we didn’t expect we would have to do. Overall an enjoyable experience, but a little disappointing compared to other 5 star hotels in the city.
Really fabulous
Afternoon tea was super. Lovely sandwiches, with the truffled egg mayonnaise a total winner. Beautiful & delicious cakes. Only snag was the scones were a bit dry. Gorgeous setting & good service.
Overpriced average quality food
I had seabass as my main course. Menu promised it in herb crust, but it arrived in a crust of black pepper which was so strong that it completely overpowered the fish and I could not taste what I was eating. Desert (pear tart) was much nicer. Friendly and attentive service, but poor lighting, I don't like to dine in semi-darkness. Also tables are not very comfy, too low and little leg room. Overall, I felt the food was very overpriced for its quality. Will not go there again.
Chic spot
Ideal spot - beautiful setting with holiday decorations in the Hotel and throughout the restaurant. Chic tables and design to the dining room. Slightly loud in the space but smart casual dress and really fantastic food. Wine menu by the glass is limited; however, the sommelier was very helpful and didn't push high priced wines. Food and experience was wonderful.
This was the nicest afternoon tea I had.
The sandwiches are substantial and I overheard someone ask if anyone ever finished. Apparently me. Sandwiches are much larger than anything I've had at other places. The desserts portion was definitely the highlight for me, but I would recommend you go with someone who enjoys desserts because my bf was not a fan of the pistachio or the carrot cake. I didn't like the 70% cacao chocolate fondue but I've been told some people straight up eat it with a spoon. The teas were fragrant. The area can be a little crammed but we went on a nice summer day so the AC was welcomed. Service gets nicer. I guess they start to warm up to you? And it felt very casual here. Just pray you don't sit next to a crying baby. The hotel it's attached to is very nice and there is a bar they recommend you to wait at if you're early for your reservation. It is going to cost a pretty penny though.
Exquisite!! Deserving of more stars.
We had a full 3 course dinner here. Everything was thoroughly exquisite. The service was fit for a queen and the food was of the highest quality and presented beautifully. I have dined at a number of Michelin restaurants and this one is right there at the top. We were treated with grace and dignity, in the best of traditional friendly service. There is something for everyone on the menu. As vegetarians, we were spoilt for choice. And the desserts were heavenly - don't miss out on the candy floss one! Of course, the ambience was second to none - set in the beautiful and stunning Connaught hotel. You feel like royalty from the moment you step into the hotel and throughout.
enjoyed a lovely weekday celebratory meal
We came here for a quiet celebratory dinner together on a weekday. Had a pretty table in the conservatory (not chilly at all) where we sat side by side to enjoy the meal. Our waiter was friendly, helpful and unobtrusive. He served the wine we opened from the bar and made sure w had a nice meal together. The egg caviar toast was perfect as always with generous dollops of caviar. The beef carpaccio and lamb were also perfectly done whilst my husbands truffle pizza was indulgent and delicious. The all day dining menu was very relaxed and not too stuffy which is what we needed after work. We always enjoy little celebrations together and the Connaught has never let us down. Parking in the area is generally easy for a weekday and you can have a relaxing drink in the Coburg bar before or afterwards. The reception team is also pretty amazing noting your preferences or special occasions (discretely in our case). We will certainly return.
WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE
Went here with family for a big birthday. From the moment we were seated for drinks in the bar to being moved to the restaurant we felt so looked after. The service was 10/10 as was the food and drinks. Karim our waiter was attentive and friendly. All the staff we met were so polite and friendly. We had a WONDERFUL meal. Every dish was amazing and all 7 of us (mixed ages) were happy with our choices. The bread basket was a lovely addition. Thank you Jean Georges - we will certainly be returning. And thank you Karim for looking after us so well.
Very disappointing
I had lunch at Jean Georges today with my husband, I was excited because I have been to the same restaurant in New York and I had a wonderful experience. The location is nice, lots of light coming in from the big windows overlooking Mount street, but it requires a bit of freshen up (sofas look a bit worn out). At the first bite of their "signature dish" (crispy salmon sushi) I realized that I was about to have a disappointing lunch: the sushi was infact totally tasteless. After that I had a 40 pound black truffle cheesburger which had a fast food taste, the black truffle that was supposed to be the explanation of the price consisted in nothing but a sauce like the one you buy at the supermarket. For that outrageus price I was expecting at least half truffle on top of it! My husband was disappointed as well with his chicken that I can make at home. We like nice restaurants and go often out, unfortunately this one is a place exclusively for people who want to show off their money, not for someone looking for good food. It is such a pity because the Connaught is a wonderful hotel that should offer only excellent experiences. Service was good, staff was friendly, there was a kind waiter that took care of us. I wont go back.
What a lovely afternoon tea
My best friend and I havent been able to catch up much in the last few years so it was such a treat to have afternoon tea here. I do sometimes struggle however as I don't enjoy traditional tea and prefer fruit tea..never fear! There was a selection here for me. The staff were attentive to my tomato allergy and they were always so helpful. It was excellent value for money and I enjoyed it. I shall be returning with my significant other as he has experienced some mixed bags at other venues and I feel he will enjoy this experience.
lunch
My husband and I had quite an underwhelming lunch here yesterday to celebrate a special birthday. The restaurant sits to the side of the hotel's lobby. As we entered the lobby we were hit by the strong musky perfume of a number of large candles that were burning. This smell wafted into the restaurant and mixed with another strong odour of fish. It was quite overpowering and not very appetising. I'm not sure if this is always the case. May be there was a problem with extractor fans. We were sat in front of a window on a low marble top table. It was very casual and would have been ok except we had a large shed outside our window blocking any view out. I don't think this shed appears on the restaurant photographs. The staff were very friendly but after being sat at our table with a menu and offered water, no-one came with a wine list or to ask if we'd like anything else to drink. We waited fifteen minutes and then I had to ask for the wine list myself. My husband did enjoy his steak although it was cooked more than he had asked for . I had a shrimp salad with salmon. It was just ok. The salmon was also overcooked and looked like it had been sitting around for a while. So having gone to somewhere where we thought we'd have a special time. We came out resenting the amount we'd spent for such a poor experience.
Candy Floss Hazelnut & Pair, a dessert from the gods!!
This would’ve been a 5star had it not been for a small quibble. (Read on) Having dined at many of it peers I had expectations and knew what to expect from Jean-Georges . Despite it being a culinary extravaganza it’s very relaxed and almost informal. We made a night of it and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. The food is as you’d expect. For starters my partner had the butternut squash and I had the blue fin tuna . We both had the Turkey and Ham Main and were surprised at the mix of flavours on our plate. The dessert … wow .. the dessert , I’ve left it till last however I will say without any exception anywhere that the candy floss hazelnut and pear desert is the most delicious thing I’ve ever put in my mouth , as I’m writing this I’m licking my lips , absolutely gorgeous, from the drama of its presentation to the taste . The staff were friendly but not in your face . I have but one complaint , whilst I appreciate the relaxed atmosphere I did not like the very low flung seats which was an issue for me as I’m leggy and struggled to seat comfortably. Incidentally the Christmas decor in reception is as beautiful as you’d expect from a luxurious hotel like this . I will say that my partner preferred this to a meal we had at the Dorchester earlier on in the month . Wow that dessert!!
Left to figure it out!
Arrived for a festive tea, no one in reception actually approaches you to ask you anything, so we stood around like lemons for around 5 mins waiting, not sure on the protocols around where to go. Finally a young lady approached us and when I explained re festive tea, she said you just go straight into the Jean-Georges room, pity no one tells you that upon arrival or when booking! Once settled, the festive tea was outstanding and the service too, however not sure we will return. The Jean-Georges room is contemporary as compared to The Ritz and no background piano playing either. When arriving at the The Ritz, the doorman greets you and opens the door, very quickly establishes you have arrived for tea and directs you, none of this happened at The Connaught. The doorman was there but said nothing as we walked past him. We do this only once a year and it is a significant spend for 4 persons, close to £400, and the whole experience matters, sadly The Connaught fell fractionally short of 5 stars.
