The service was excellect.
Devon was very personable and very attentive. The rest of the staff seemed excellent as well. The food came out fast, hot and without sacrificing quality. They will get you to your b'way show on time.
Be the first to ReplyThe highlight of this restaurant is definitely the service.
It's excellent, they are always checking on you to see if you need anything so you'll never be lacking. The staff is very personable and kind as well. The food came out within MINUTES of ordering, too. It's the fastest I've ever received my food from a restaurant before, and the quality of the food was still so great. I got a cheeseburger and fries and it was perfectly done and tasted amazing. It's a great place if you want to get a quick and quality meal before seeing a broadway show! They get you there on time for sure.
Be the first to ReplyThe interior is fascinating with all the historic posters.
I wish the food was as interesting as the posters. I don't even know how some food is so flavorless and some is so overly salted. The service is good and friendly. With so many great restaurants in New York I would look forward to trying other places for future Broadway shows.

Unfortunately Joe Allen's is not at all what it once was. This neighborhood stalwart known for being a "theater hangout" was once open late enough for post theater dining where you could enjoy a drink and a meal after seeing a Broadway show. You could meet friends, run into old ones, and even make new ones late into the night. I recently saw MJ The Musical on a Saturday evening with an 8pm curtain. The show runs 2 hours 45 minutes coming down at 10:45pm. I had an 11pm reservation for 6 family members I had in town. All was well until a mutual friend arrived for just a quick drink at 12:05am. The doors were locked. When I explained to the waiter and manager that my friend didn't want food (as the kitchen was closed), and just came to say a quick hello, they acted like it was insane for anyone to show up at midnight. We were told the bar was hard closed at 12am. We basically had to finish up and leave as my friend had come from a different part of town and I couldn't just send him away. In the old days you used to be able to stumble into the bar at 1am no problem. I do see now on Google that they have changed their hours to closing at 11:30pm. This review is just a word to the wise that this is no longer the Joe Allen's we knew. For shows that end near 11pm (remember Les Miz) this is not a restaurant catering to the theater crowd anymore. When the proprietor Joe Allen died a few years back, I believe his restaurant died with him. My recent experience was a good reminder that nothing lasts forever. Side note: When the restaurant came back after the pandemic, they took away the white tablecloths they had since the restaurant opened. A server told me that management did this as a "safety precaution." I suppose everyone but me knew that you could get COVID from a tablecloth. Color me naive. Again, Vanishing New York.

All around great! The food is always hot and good, and the staff are always super personable and provide excellent service! I'm a creature of habit, and almost always get the meatloaf, which comes with mashed potatoes and sautรฉed spinach, but tonight I went for my mom's fave, the grilled half chicken. It was piping hot, and tender and juicy. It's de-boned, so makes it super easy to eat! No strange sauces or spices, but still quite flavorful. It comes with mashed potatoes. My aunt and uncle both got burgers which they said, and I've heard, are very good! A solid pre-theatre dinner spot, which empties out a little bit before curtain time. Occasionally, you will have celebrity sightings if you're into that. Reservations are a must and cannot be made before 1week in advance.

A pre-Broadway show institution, I made my requisite reservation seven days in advance. That morning, multiple availabilities opened, which has me wondering if they take reservations on a few tables on Open Table for visitors, as the place was packed when we arrived. We were seated in the corner near the service station by the door. A terrible table, perhaps solely for those out-of-towners like me thinking a reservation means something on Restaurant Row. Skip Open Table and call directly, perhaps? The saving graces were Matthew, our charming server, and my strong gin & tonic. Our meals were very average for such a highly touted restaurant. My Caesar salad was overdressed, and dotted with supermarket quality crotons. The salmon was nicely cooked but the ramekin of rice lacked complexity. Surely the food could be improved upon, but I suppose with Joe Allen's reputation, there is no need. The diners will continue to flock to it, both locals and visitors alike, even though its heydays are long past.

So we have gone here after the theater about a million times. Last night about anniversary. After mistakenly charging us for a drink out adorable and amazing waiter had it removed. However the manger thought we wanted the anniversary dessert removed and came over to tell us "we don't give desserts away for anniversaries." Cool. Incredible tacky and totally wrong as it wasn't the issue. Wow. Like embarrassing.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent place to stop for a pre-show snack and drinks.
Our waiter was delightful and the vibe was great. Very old school, cellar bar New York. And very convenient location. My friend and I shared a veggie quesadilla and Cesar salad. Great light pairing.
Be the first to ReplyThis place is overrated and we were disappointed.
We were rushed to order (she came back at least 3 times in 5 minutes) only to have our waitress disappear and table be taken over by someone else without any introduction or comment. Our food was rushed as well - salad came out as soon as order placed - Caesar salad nothing special. Burger was undercooked. Don't recommend the banana pie. Nobody even acknowledged us as we left yet they were all standing at the entrance - I've never had that unless I'm at a fast food restaurant. We definitely were flagged as just being in for a show. Won't go back and won't recommend.

Everything was very tasty! We enjoyed the vibes and the service was fantastic. Highly recommend the shrimp and the liver (if that's your thing!)

My server was Brian-- attentive and professional.I went for lunch between conference workshops. A little getaway with my journal and a cup of joe. I had the Grilled Chicken Salad with trevisano and currents.Delicious.

If you're looking for dinner before the theater, after the theater, a quick drink, or a quiet business lunch, you simply can't make a better choice.
Be the first to ReplyJoe Allen never lets us down.
The food is always delicious. Service is a high priority. We started off with black bean soup. It was delicious. There were four of us. We all order something different. We were not disappointed. A lot of tourists go there. More now than before. But hey if you're going to do the New York thing go to Joe Allen. It's a must. And hey, you never know who you might see there. We've been there for lunch. We've been there for dinner. You can eat light or you can have something a little heavier.Mangia!! You can't go wrong. It is all delicious

The classic spot to go to pre and post theater (for patrons and cast alike - I was brought here by a friend of mine that was starring in a show at the time). It's the perfect ambiance and vibe to go along with an evening at the theater. Food is nothing spectacular but it is good and probably among the better that you'll find in the area.

Joe allen was a fun cute spot to get a drink and some snacks after a Broadway show. It wasn't crowded and the service was amazing! I highly recommend Patrick as a server, he will take care of you and all your needs! The escargot is amazing here, melts like butter in your mouth and is definitely worth every penny! Don't eat it too quickly because it's hot hot hot fresh from the oven!

We stopped in for dinner, right after the 8 o'clock curtains for the local theaters. So we got a table for the four of us quite easily. The food was fantastic. And then a particular pleasure, our waiter, Drew, made the whole evening. Highly recommend this restaurant. Ask for Drew as your waiter!

Twelve years later and of course I went on my latest trip a few weeks ago. Nice to see it so crowded. I love it there, it feels like home and always has. Some of my favorite dishes are no longer on the menu, but I'm always happy to have the Caesar salad with chicken - it's fantastic. But everything on the menu is great, the servers are friendly, and so are the hosts. And despite the crowds, it never really gets to ear-splitting noisy, which is great.

The best - Do yourself a favor and order the burger - even though you might be tempted by the other items - order the burger at least once. It is amazing. Cooked perfectly with a bun that is out of this world. This is such a comfortable spot to visit when I'm in town on business. Sit and the bar and you can not only count on great food and service, but usually some lovely conversation with other diners.
Be the first to ReplyReally good food.
Nice waiters. Decent price for location, and great ambiance! I had a lovely time.

The bartender and staff were so professional and efficient. I have recommended Joe Allen to all of my friends that travel to NYC.
Be the first to ReplyNice spot for a late dinner after a show.
Very dim lighting and cozy atmosphere. Service was attentive and friendly. No extremely unique or different menu offerings but mostly everyone can find something to order here. The guacamole starter was good. The passion fruit tiramisu was tasty too to finish the meal.

This place was absolutely wonderful and delicious! ย We truly enjoyed everything we ate. Server was wonderful and very attentive. ย Mussels for appetizer were so tender and delicious they were the best we've had in a long time. Branzino entree was crisp yet tender with such a full flavor. ย NY strip was tender and juicy with perfectly seasoned fries. ย Drinks were generous and delicious. Will definitely come here again. If you are in the area don't miss out. It was a fantastic meal!

Very good solid bistro with very professional staff and great food. Oasis in the chaos of NYC. I've put this place on my favourites list.
Be the first to ReplyWas super disappointed.
Came for a coffee and famous banana cream pie at the bar. The crust was so tough that it was impossible to eat - I'd try and stab it with my spoon but couldn't break it off. Not sure if it was prepackaged crust, stale or what. The coffee was fine, but it took a long time to come out - I think they forgot about it.

Classic NY restaurant with good menu close to theater district. Food is American at fair price and food.
