Kai Mayfair London Reviews
Well worth a visit
What a treat! Our first proper chinese fine dining experience and it did not disappoint. The presentation of the food is superb with the vegetarian scallop started being a work of art! The deconstructed bao buns were delicious, sezuan tofu main perfectly balanced and seasoned as well as the seabass. Thoroughly enjoyable and great service with some interesting wines
The best Michelin Chinese restaurant iโve ever visited!
I have to give this place a 5/5! After visiting Kai Songbird at the Corinthia Yacht Club in Qatar we had to try out Kai Mayfair. We were two at the table and Teresa was our most exceptional host. We had Prawns on Toast, Wasabi prawns (divine!!!), lobster&lobster and a plate of Chilean Seabass. Pics attached. The place is very close to Hyde Park Winter Wonderland so it is very central too. We will surely visit again when weโre back in London!
The Aromatic Crispy Duck was very dry, a poor choice,
The Aromatic Crispy Duck was very dry, a poor choice, especially as the lamb we observed on the adjacent table which was occupied by a famous US tennis professional looked scrumptious. At this level, one would expect every choice to be spectacular.
Michelin star?
A perfectly reasonable Chinese restaurant, but you'd be disappointed if you were expecting Michelin star quality food, presentation or service. I would recommend you go there, have a portion of the Wasabi prawns then go elsewhere.
It Doesnโt Get Any Better
My wife and I were not expecting this level of cuisine even though Kai had earned a Michelin Star! It was, in a word, extraordinary! We might have caught them on an exceptional day, but I donโt think so. Attention to detail at this level is not an accident but the result of years of practice! Kudos to everyone at Kai! Very, very impressive on all fronts!
Amazing!
Such a delightful evening at Kai. Superb appetizers beef, shrimps, squidโฆ to die for Peking Duck (a must try). Excellent service from Teresa, Enrique and Wynn. A true chinese culinary address to experience while in London. We will go again, and again! Bravo!
Unique afternoon tea
Went for the afternoon tea which was delightful - but a little underwhelming for a Michelin star restaurant. I could sing praises about the presentation of the meal; the tableware is gorgeous and the food is attractive and plated beautifully. However I found the actual amount of food a little lacking and left wanting more especially for the price point. If youโve had a lot of Chinese food the flavours will be very familiar as it was to me, so unfortunately I was not especially impressed taste-wise either. The restaurant decor is lovely and the staff are very attentive. This afternoon tea experience is still quite unique and the bird theme is very sweet so I would still recommend this for those interested. It is a fab setting for a catch up with girl friends or a first date. I would love to return to try the dinner menu.
Poor, poor and then very poor!!!
We returned to Kai for the 8th time. Previously, we - and various guests - we entertained at Kai had loved the food and ambience of the restaurant. This visit however, was very very poor!! A Michelin star??? We would have to say - How did they get that on this occasion?? The beef starter had changed slightly and was too acidic. The soft shell crab starter was acceptable. The sweet and sour pork was dry and chewy. The lamb cutlets (2) were small, dry, overcooked and not complimented by the sauce which was just โsplurgedโ onto the plate. The waiting staff that attended our table were very nice and tried very hard - although - reading people as we do, they were trying to overcompensate for the poor food. To say we were disappointed would be an understatement- to say that we were relieved that we didnโt take any friends or family to the restaurant would also be an understatement!!! We were asked by a member of staff if we had enjoyed our meal and we were honest with our answers, and were told that our feedback would be passed on to the chef???? Would we return?? No!! Would we recommend?? Most definitely not!! Very saddened that such a great restaurant has gone so far south!!! You really need to drag yourselves up by the heels!!!!
Easily one of my favorite restaurants in London.
Conveniently located in Mayfair. This spacious and moody restaurant does evoke the spirit of big Asian cities like Tokyo and Hong Kong. We came with vegans and vegetarians and service was so helpful in having us make an informed decision. We got wasabi shrimp which is a must get- nothing else like it. Also spicy chicken and the faux Peking duck which is absolutely sublime - I would eat it everyday if I could.
My favourite โค๏ธ!!
Fabulous restaurant with outstanding service, my favourite in London. Recommend wasabi prawns, aromatic duck, sea bass almost everything as Iโve tried everything . Itโs worth a visit
Honestly disappointed.
The service was a bit weird here. Outwardly friendly but not that helpful. What I remembered of the food - the wasabi prawn was good but it's not that unique. It tastes like wasabi honey mustard on a shrimp tempura. And the pandan creme brulee had little taste of pandan and was quite liquid, not as set as I would have expected.
My recent experience was not the first at this beautiful
My recent experience was not the first at this beautiful restaurant. I took my daughter to the afternoon tea. We arrived slightly early but we accommodated straight away as the table was already set. As I have a mobility issue, the hostess, very kind and polite found an alternative route which was a nice start. The waiter was very pleasant. However, the limited amount and variety of food was poor. The decor was splendid, we have awaited for the food for quite some time. 5 minutes after tea was served we were told that kitchen is closing, we had hardly a chance to taste anything we are asked what else do we want. We felt really rushed. The creme brulee was too similar with the cake served. In my opinion below average quality for a Mishelin star restaurant. Then waiter said goodbye as he had to leave. During less than 2 hours stay. Disappointing but it can happen. Also rose tea was a tea bag. We could not eat our money cakes, I asked to take them. Our waitress told us we cannot. I asked what do you do with these cakes now, she said we throw they away. I refused for the 1st time in my life to pay the service charge. She repeated it again So you refuse to pay the Service charge, Madam. Hm, I think something is seriously wrong with the Management. Poor experience and poor value for money. There are a number of places we have been and enjoyed more. It would be inappropriate to comment any further.
Top Notch!
I've been here twice, the food is fantastic and their sweet & sour pork is totally next level. It's a really beautiful restaurant and they are generous with their spacing and don't seat you on top of each other. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for. We got served by a gentleman by the name Desar, he was superb and really looked after us like kings. Will return asap.
Not worth while
Not sure how this restaurant achieved a Michelin *, ambience ok, nice enough surroundings. Starters again ok! Super small and hot & sour soup ยฃ29, 3 spoons, and finished. Middle course qtr duck , absolutely nothing remarkable in fact really dry, not crispy! In a nutshell would not recommend. Our meal for 4 people was ยฃ900
Absolutely fantastic food with brilliant service
The late Michael Winner, apparently visited this restaurant around 13 years ago and wrote a poor review. He must have got out of bed on the wrong side that day or perhaps he was very unlucky. Everything about this restaurant is 100% terrific. Every dish was amazing. We booked for lunch and the manager was brilliant. We enjoyed ourselves so much. We stayed for hours trying different dishes and he introduced to the lady manager when she came on later in the afternoon to take over. They were both charming, attentive, brilliant managers. We were given a great table for two, a large round table at the rear of the restaurant on the ground floor. The knowledge of all of the staff was as good as it gets and they accurately described every dish. The service was absolutely first rate, warm, friendly and intuitive. I am surprised they only have one Michelin star as everything about it was way better than one Michelin star and I do hope they receive a second star because they are that good ! The menu was so interesting and enticing that they were just so many dishes we would have liked to have ordered. My son took charge of the ordering and after advice he went through so many different dishes. Each one was a delight, beautifully presented, and absolutely delicious. The wine list was superb, and the manager and I swapped wine tips, I told him about a particularly excellent South African desert wine and he introduced me to a brilliant Canadian ice wine. We also had various other winds all of them brilliant. The restrooms are downstairs, and were in line with the rest of the restaurant, immaculate and as good as it gets. The tables downstairs are possibly in an even better setting than the tables on the ground floor. The downstairs room is beautiful and they have a spectacular private dining room. This is the most excellent restaurant, all of the staff are are wonderful, all of the dishes were brilliant, creative, and looked as good as they tasted. I canโt wait to return.
Disappointing
I have been coming here for more than 35 years, but this particular visit went off to a bad start: I wanted to book a table for 4 at 7.30 pm and was told that none was available at that time, but only at 6.30, which is a bit early for us. But we accepted this anyway, and when we arrived a few minutes early [to judge distance and time is always a bit of a challenge in London], we were told that the Restaurant is closed and that we should sit in a corner behind the bar. How embarrassing in front of my guests. We were then shown our table and given the Wine List. I chose a bottle of Laurent-Perrier Rose Champagne for ยฃ 195 a bottle. Without saying anything they brought the Champagne. Later we ordered a second bottle, which also came promptly. When it came to paying the bill, it came to ยฃ 1,650 for dinner for 4 and two bottles of Champagne. I thought it was a bit on the high side, and when I had a closer look at the receipt when I reached home, I realised that they had given a much more expensive Perrier Rose Champagne at a whopping ยฃ 420 a bottle. Thus the 2 bottles alone came to ยฃ 840. I then looked online at their Wine List and very much to my surprise, I could not find the Laurent-Perrier Rose Champagne that I had ordered. So evidently, the Wine List that is given to customers is different than the one that they really use. At least they could have pointed out that the Champagne that I have ordered was no longer available and I could have selected an other, less expensive one. But instead, they seem to have decided to simply bring a bottle which is more than twice as expensive without saying a word about this. That in my view is not very professional!
Staff have no clue about allergens-why do they have a Michelin?
Do you have gf soya sauce? - "Yes and no- we have both sometimes gf sometimes it has gluten. The supplier gives us both"?!!! So can you cater to someone with a gluten allergy? "depends how bad is your allergy. Some gluten free allergy is ok some gluten free allergy is not ok". What do you mean? "how much gluten free do you need?" Well, I'd like all my food to be gluten free. "Sorry we can't" HOW DOES THIS RESTAURANT EXIST IN LONDON? No point calling food standards on them as I'm sure they have the paper work but can't train their staff.
1st Disappointment In My Favourite Restaurant
Been Going To This Restaurant For Over 3 Decades . Dinned Here Over 200 Times. Yesterday Was The 1st Time I Saw Standards Drop The Industry Is Going Through An Awful Time But No Excuse For Having Uninformed& Untrained Staff On The Floor So Many Mistakes . 6/7 Soups Came Out Wrong Dry Pancakes Brought To The Table Twice Extra Noodles Ordered , Never came Worst Part Was No Apology Was Given I Really Hope They Pull Their Socks Up You Canโt Operate A Top Mayfair Restaurant & Get Away With Such Unprofessional Service. Hope The Management Take Note. Sanjay Anand MBE
Very nice indeed
We visited with my daughter for her birthday, to be clear it was not inexpensive. However the food was delightful, as with many London restaurants they do dick two ways which is fantastic, the belly port was divine and Lobster Lobster was just perfect. Very special and more intimate and quiet than the HaKasans of this world.
As usual amazing!
This is our favourite restaurant in London and we visit every time we are in London! Amazing! The Tiramisu Martini is to die for! And they have a great variety of Vegetarian dishes! Crown of Jewels is delicious!! Superb service!
Disappointing
A little bit disappointing, and not what I would have expected from a Michelin starred restaurant. The service was fine, except that they got one of our orders wrong (wasabi prawns rather than the vegetarian wasabi chai - perhaps this could be clarified when there two dishes of a similar name on the menu). We didnโt alert them to this as it was quiet in the restaurant and we didnโt want to draw attention. The wasabi prawns were just ok. Everything else was nice, but not particularly nicer than any Chinese food Iโve had.
Definitely worth a visit for a leisurely afternoon high tea with an oriental touch
We specially travelled here, a place obviously off the beaten path, to try their highly acclaimed afternoon tea. And we were not disappointed in the least. Items were exquisitely presented and very tasty. The ambience (in the basement is where afternoon tea is served) was cozy and enchanting. Decor is modern Chinese with a fetish for birds and birdcages. We enjoyed the entire experience very much. If the restaurant folks are reading this, my suggestion would be to have some modernized or jazzed up Chinese piped in music. I know youโve made this very hip, but itโs still a Chinese restaurant after all, so if you could do more Chinese items that would be super. If you are thinking of coming, please do - i have never eaten modern Chinese afternoon tea done in this way in my life. And hereโs a tip: you CAN order a refill of the food for one round, so take note of what you like so you can have an encore.
