Wow! What a colossal disappointment. Olive Garden would have been so much better. It was our 33rd anniversary. The lady that took our reservations was super nice. We arrived about 30 minutes before our reservation and had a nice Manhattan and glass of chardonnay in the bar. Then we were seated at a nice table in the upper room. So far, so good. Our waitress was a bit gruff, especially when she dumped our $18 pichet of wine into our glasses, but OK. Kind of like Berta on Two and a Half Men. Our calamari was good and well-seasoned. So far, so good. But then the train went off the track. My wife had the gnocchetti with sun dried tomatoes and I had the gnocchi with Bolognese sauce. Bolognese is never really deep in flavor but this was just on this side of OK. The gnocci was OK because it wasn’t too dense. The dish was a 3 out of five. However, the gnocchetti was a different matter. It was just a big bowl of glommy, sticky pasta in a salty goo of pesto-ish sauce. As stated above, Olive Garden would never serve such a heaping bowl. Home-made? When and in whose home? When we declined dessert, Berta (the waitress) seemed to take it personally. Then, then worst moment arrived. Along with our bill, Berta put down a votive candle cup (think Dollar Store), filled with little glass beads, a birthday candle, and a Party City Happy Anniversary thing onto our table. Geez! If that is what you are going to do, just don’t do anything. Cheesy doesn’t even begin to describe this. Even the people at the next table were laughing. When we have celebrated our anniversary in Vail the last six years at other restaurants, they not only served up some good food, but also some recognition that they appreciated us spending our special night (and some bucks) at their establishment. As we were leaving, the manager (?) asked if everything was fine, my wife (as she is wanted to do) let her know what a joke the meal and the anniversary thing was. Of course, no apology was forthcoming. The bottom line – there are much better restaurants in Vail, especially for the price that you will pay. If you are out for a special occasion, you can do much better that La Nonna.
