🤮 1/5 - Pretentious / Inflated prices / Go elsewhere

“a restaurant that …instead of a lecture at every course” I thought of this comment by restaurant reviewer Grace Dent (The Guardian UK) after eating at La Vara which was totally pretentious and overly expensive. My friend had been to the restaurant 8 years previously was keen to see what it was like. What a change from the more neighbourly place he knew, he said. Whatever it was like in the past they now serve tiny portions which are hard to share, at inflated prices- about 25 or 30$ a plate. We had tongue of beef, octopus- frail slithers in a tomatoey sauce, some beans and other plates I can’t recall. The most laughable aspect was indeed the lecture at the delivery of each dish- especially the beans. The waitress telling us at great length, their provenance. Sure it’s nice to know, but no need for a lecture whereby they lean over the table and dominate. So pretentious and yukky. The place though was full - so maybe Broolynites have a ton more money than sense. I’d love @jayrayner1 of The Observer (UK) to review here if he’s ever this way. This small place is very much ‘up themselves’ as I described it to my US friend. None of us will be returning
