Langban was pretty good and the service was very friendly
Langban was pretty good and the service was very friendly and down to earth. Me and my partner did the tasting menu and I thought that Kanom Krok with the scallops was easily the best dish of the night. It was so flavorful and creamy that I regretted that I finished the bite so fast. I think that the appetizers were the star of the menu and that all the other dishes were quite forgettable. Not bad, but not phenomenal as I didn't really feel that there were any particular stand outs. For the final main dish, there was a curry for "family style" but while it was nicely presented, I just didn't think there was anything special or out of the ordinary for something that commanded the price of a tasting menu. It was also a bit too spicy for my own palette. Regardless, it was a fun experience and might be worth it if you are a fan of Thai food in a slightly elevated context.

Well I've waited a long time to finally eat at Langbaan and it definitely lived up to the hype. The food was fabulous, they change the menu every couple months but you can read about it online at their website. It was too complicated for me to remember the names of what I ate, but each dish was better than the last. First time I've eaten octopus and it was wonderful. There wasn't a single mediocre plate. The servers were also great, took their time to explain every dish fully and they're wine selection for me was great. I'm also very impressed that during our terrible ice storm last week they cooked meals for the homeless rather than throw away the food they couldn't use since no one could get in to eat.
Be the first to ReplyIt's no wonder they just got a James Beard nomination.
The space, service, and food were top notch! From the first course to the last, every bite was a party in your mouth. If I had to choose a favorite it would, without question, be the lamb belly curry! O. M. G. Melt in your mouth. They also run two restaurants out of the same space on weekends and they were so on top of everything, you would never know. Cannot wait to visit their sister restaurant Phuket Kitchen.

Langbaan: Blown away by this experience and the omakase, attention and care put together by this team. Entering Langbaan is like journeying to a traditional Thai home. The dimly lit greens and wood beams provide an intimate setting for your meal experience. The staff is attentive and wonderful; they take care to explain the menu and enjoy the experience. Each course is inspired by Thai cuisine and local ingredients. You will have a hard time deciding which standout plate tops them all. Thai food to me is very flavorful: coconut milk, nuts, spices. I particularly enjoyed the "Jook" - an amazing multi-textured, multi-flavored dish using octopus and pomegranate. It was an experience I'd never tasted before. It's not strictly Thai, but honors the innovation and palette of Thai culture. It's a sensory feast. Langbaan is a can't miss, if you're in Portland and want to taste something unique, but familiar- and yet, distinctly Portland. Food: 5/5 Value: 5/5 Experience: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Ambience: 5/5 Good for: Fancy dinner. Celebrating. Authenticity: 4/5 Recommends: Giving yourself over to the experience. Notes:
Be the first to ReplyI was not a fan, at all.
I will add the caveat of, when it comes to Thai food, I'm no expert, but my favorite dishes are larb, and pad kee mao. I am really not fond of foods that are both sweet and savory, peanut used in a savory context, sesame, fish sauce, and lemongrass. So, don't let this dissuade you if you like these things. Besides the fact that the menu nearly entirely featured flavor profiles that I dislike, almost everything was super gelatinous and goopy, with no textural variation. The Kanom Krak, which they claimed was a beloved dish amongst their customers, was a mucosal catastrophe. Perhaps I am a philistine for my inability to enjoy homogeneous and slimy foods, but I found myself leaving both nauseous and ravenous. The only thing I actually liked was the yum mama neua yang (the wagyu flank steak salad) One of my dining companions, who enjoys Thai food as a whole, also noted that the textures were too gloopy. The service was weird and kind of punk, for lack of a better term. The better the food is at a restaurant, the less I factor in service. If they are serving me the best food I've ever had in my life, I don't care if they spit on me or kick me or something. But, the less impressive the food is, the more noticeable bad service becomes. And the food was not good enough for the service to be that weird and punk.

Food was more on the spicy side even if they tell you upfront it's NOT spicy at all. For the price, I'd rather have some of the appetizers as the main meal rather than the whole 12? Course meal. Halfway thru the meal I stopped eating because it was way too spicy for me. I got so full drinking water. The service was great and quick. The little plates were plenty and they were cleared accordingly. The narrative of each meal was perfect but if it's not going to agree with one's tastebuds then only the ears got satisfied. It was incredibly dark inside too so you could barely appreciate the presentation. Sorry NOT for me.
Be the first to ReplyVery original.
The flavor combinations were outstanding especially with the sole main dinner and sides. I'm taking one star away. I know it's cliche to say fancy restaurants have small portions, but it's really true here. If you have a big appetite, don't expect to leave full. The last two items were a ginger ice cream that was about one tablespoon worth and a coconut flan that was about 1.5"x1.5". Why is dessert a one biter? Give me more. Especially for $125.

We have spent time in Thailand, dear reader, so it's fair to say that we know authentic when we taste it. Langbaan promotes, "Thai-style dining experience inspired by century-old traditions." Promotes, okay, but certainly does not deliver. *Reservations are not easy to get, and it's all hype, we assure you *Parking is impossible in this part of DT Portland *Venue looks like a summer camp mess hall *Bathrooms look like a demilitarized zone *Our server didn't have any when we asked for menu suggestions *Our server kept bringing us food that other patrons/tables had ordered *The Miang Soup was served with a human fingernail in it *The Nahm Tok was served on an obviously cracked and broken plate *When we asked for our coats the staff could not find them (WTF?!) *When we left no tip, a manager followed us to our car for a 20% gratuity If you have never been to Thailand please don't use this restaurant as a measuring stick for authentic food. A Thai frozen dinner from 7-11 would top this place any day of the week. Since we didn't eat much, we're stopping off at a local taco truck before heading back to the Cessna. Portland, you're getting worse and worse.
Be the first to ReplyCame here for a special occasion.
It is a fixed menu. And no modifications and 20% gratuity is added. We arrived right at 8:30pm, we got seated right away at the bar. We did have 2 different servers help and they were both great! Very knowledgeable about each item in the menu and the ingredients. The ambiance was very chill and casual. It was a bit dark and really hard to read the menu ingredients (luckily we had a small light at the bar). It wasn't highly decorated but a great mood overall. Food tasted good with a few hits and misses but we tried some things that we never tried before. Definitely come with people who have been to tasting menus before and won't complain about the price!

We went for the pre-fixed 11 small course tasting menu for $125 per person that they do twice nightly. While the food was quite excellent, although highly likely geared towards the non Asian patron, the space is not at all romantic. The three 2-top tables are very close together so that your servers bumm is right against your table when they are serving the table next to you, and all of those tables face the two bars that seat patrons for walk ins for their sister restaurant Phuket Cafe. High foot traffic. We went for a special occasion but received no acknowledgment or any thoughtful seating because of that. It felt rushed (because they were trying to get through 11 courses quickly). And the wine paring price (additional cost) was not disclosed upfront so when the bill came and it was twice the amount of the tasting menu, it was a bit of a shock. There was a added 2 oysters (delicious) for $8 or $10 and an added sliced wagu beef that was a 3 tiny slices (.075 oz) for $40. After $500, I went home still hungry and made myself a 3 egg omelet with a crab cake. I guess I felt like it wasn't worth the price. Tasted great and staff was knowledgable and efficient. But overall, Im not rich and I probably won't go there again unfortunately.
Be the first to ReplyIncredible night at Langbaan.
Each plate was like an explosion of flavor - so complex and piquant.Loved how knowledgeable the staff were in explaining their pairings. The service was exceptional and you can feel the passion they have towards making your experience unforgettable. The space is very intimate with around 8-10 tables in doors. You can really take your time with your meal and do not feel rushed whatsoever. My favorite part of the night was ending it with two of the most incredible desserts we've ever tasted - a sweet ending to the perfect evening.
Be the first to ReplyLangbaan means "back of the house" and is tucked away
Langbaan means "back of the house" and is tucked away inside the restaurant Paadee. It is a small space that is very intimate and cozy. However, our server informed us that after 7 years of being here - they will be moving to a more spacious location in northeast Portland (this upcoming fall) so we were glad we were able to check out the original spot. Our reservation was at 5:30 pm on a Sunday evening. We were the first ones to arrive so we were able to be seated right by the kitchen counter. Each tasting menu is priced at $105. They have a wine pairing option but I decided to get one of their cocktails and a glass of rose instead. The current menu was inspired by Yaowarat (Bangkok Chinatown). Being half Thai, I am very familiar with the traditional ingredients and it was interesting to see the chefs transform classic dishes into something so unique.Out of the 12 courses, highlights of the night were the first 3 "snack" items (miang som, kanom krok, and kanom pa na goong mung korn) and the chuu chee nuea. The layers of flavors in each dish was spectacular. However, I think they fell a little short in the middle. I wasn't too impressed with the khao tom or "yum". There was like 20 grains of rice in the rice soup and the Chinese doughnut was basically a large crouton. I felt like there was way too much going on with the yum goong sod. There was a deep fried prawn head, salmon roe, jellyfish, Chinese sausage, and an assortment of American vegetables. I understand that they are trying to be creative but it was way off and far from authentic. It lacked the sweet, spicy, sour taste that a traditional yum would have. The desserts were fine. First one reminded me of a pineapple upside down cake. Although the portion sizes looks small, it was actually very filling!Service was excellent. We had an overall good experience, would come back to try the other seasonal menus.

Outdoor early (outdoor) dining during the pandemic As always at Langbaan, the food was exceptional and very creatively prepared.
Be the first to ReplyHad an absolutely fantastic experience at Langbaan.
From the moment you arrive the amazing staff is friendly and welcoming and you can tell instantly everyone loves working there. I am not a food snob but have had the pleasure of eating at many, many very well reviewed restaurants in my life including quite a few michelin star restaurants in the US and many abroad. That list includes a michelin star experience in Bangkok early last year. I can say without hesitation the food and experience at Langbaan sits in the stratosphere for me as a few of my most fancy-schmanzy meals. How they haven't been awarded a James Beard here in the US I will never understand. I will say without question I am a Thai food snob and it's by far my favorite cuisine in the world. Any time I have a chance to step out of the standard Thai menus (which I do love) I will take it. Langbaan blew me away with the creativity of dishes, abundance of flavors even beyond what you normally expect from Thai food and the wine parings. And again, our servers were all amazing. Extremely knowledgable about the food creations and the wines. I am definitely not a wine expert, but the team at Langbaan does their homework and chose wines that were far from the ordinary which I think is a perfect compliment to how unique the food is at Langbaan. Why serve a run of the mill Sav Blanc if you can find a wine from Georgia (country) that uses grapes from a lineage of over 1,000 years? That's the care and creativity they use. If I get back to Portlan I will be going back to Langbaan as you might imagine. They change their menu regularly which makes me envy those locals who can go whenever they want.
Be the first to ReplyWe had a quick stop in Portland during our west coast road
We had a quick stop in Portland during our west coast road trip and wanted to have a nice tasting menu dinner. I heard about this from a friend who works in the restaurant scene so naturally was very excited for this. Reservations were easy online, you prepay ($105 per person) and there are 2 dinner time options per night and the menu changes seasonally. Luckily we were able to be the first to taste the winter menu. The meal was explained to be basically a thai+chinese fusion and while we thought you just pick a few items from the large menu seen online, you actually get all 12 courses. The appetizers sadly are bite sized but were definitely the star of the show for us. I can't even choose which of the three (lobster, hokkaido scallop, shrimp in betel leaf) I liked more. After the appetizers came a swordfish soup/rice dish, and even my husband who really doesn't like soup ate the entire thing. My absolute favorite, however, was the spot prawn with herb puree. The dish was perfectly balanced and spot prawn was so fresh and sweet. As if this wasn't enough already, after the main entrees come out with (fried rice, steak in curry, sole, and ground pork). They were all solid and at this point I was already stuffed, but I do have to say while the curry had a lot of flavor, it was probably one of the spiciest things I've eaten and I have a pretty high spice tolerance. Then we had 2 desserts to end the night.Overall, it was a great experience and I love how it showcased asian food as fine dining. I have literally never been so full at a tasting menu and we didn't even finish all of it. I highly recommend this spot and be sure to come hungry!

Langbaan is special, nothing else can be said that people have not mentioned already. The team is amazing, the food even better. The experience of eating at Langbaan probably has ruined Thai food for me. When we heard the server tell us that the team at Langbaan really enjoys and actually has fun with this restaurant, it shows how places like this can exist. It's a labor of love, passion, fun, and just plain talent and hard work. When people are the best at what they do and LOVE what they do, you appreciate it even more. Yea, go here, celebrate, and enjoy the company at Langbaan.I haven't said anything about the food yet, it's great. We had the fall and winter tasting menu in 2021. My favorites areGai Tom Kamin (fall 2021) -Roasted chicken roulade, shimeji mushroom, shallot, cherry tomato with turmeric brothChu Chee Nuea (winter 2021) - Dry aged New York steak, Thai cassia leaf curry, bok choy, yam, chanterelleKhao Tom Plaa (winter 2021) - Swordfish in rice soup, matsutake, ginger, chinese donut, Thai XO sauceYum Hang Wua (winter 2021) - Oxtail, tendon chip, mala spice, pearl onion, greens, golden and red beetbut everything is good.Looking forward to what the team will do next.

We came to Portland for a little babymoon, and a friend had recommended this place. We made our reservations online via their website for Friday night. The reservation was for a patio tasting, a 5 course predetermined menu by their top chefs. We had to prepay for the meal, and the gratuity at the time of making the reservation. We arrived at the restaurant and we were seated at the outdoor seating area right away. The ambiance was cozy with a few outdoor fireplace. It is an intimate setting. Everything had already been set up for us. Silverware, water already in our cups and a bottle of water in case we needed more. The waiters were excellent and made the experience that much more meaningful. They would bring out the courses and delicately explain the components of the dish, which order to eat the dish, and how well they go together. The food is delicious! Authentic ingredients used skillfully to create amazing dishes. Highly recommend!
Be the first to ReplyReally can't say enough about their tasting menu.
One of the best dining experiences we've had in PDX so far. Everything from the apps to dessert to the drinks were thoughtfully put together and had a story behind each choice. The servers were extremely thorough and helpful with each serving, and it added so much life to the already incredible dishes. The highlights include: Hokkaido scallop, coconut cream, crispy rice cupFermented pork, coconut creme fraiche, ginger, longan, taro chipGrilled pork jowl, japanese eggplant, pickled apple, fennel, chicharron, quinoaThe entire Main course was a fun experience/experiment in mixing flavors. Just a heads up.. the Fermented mussels got a kick to 'emPortioned perfectly, expertly curated ebb and flow of flavors and textures. Definitely recommend!

We visited Portland for a long weekend and out of all the places we ate at, this was by far the best. We were immediately and warmly greeted by a staff member who brought us to our table. Like many other restaurants in the area, the seating was outdoors. It was a chilly night but there was an adorable tabletop fireplace and to keep us warm, not to mention that it gave a cute ambiance. Our menu was preset, and the server wonderfully reconfirmed the food allergies of the members in our party and reassured us that all of the food in our meal did not include any of those items. I can't even begin to explain how amazing the food was. Every dish was prepared with care and had beautiful presentation. The flavors complimented each other, the wine pairings brought out the best of each dish, and each dish was the perfect size (tbh when the first course came out the appetizers were bite sized and we thought "maybe it won't be enough food," but we were wrong. By the time the main courses rolled around we were well on our way to being full!). The servers explained each dish with so much passion and excitement that you know the food was good. My favorite was the Gai Tom Kamin and I will forever crave this soup. Be warned thought that a lot of the dishes pack some heat so if you're sensitive to spicy foods you may want to ask about spice level ahead of time. This was hands down the best thing about Portland. I can't wait to visit again!

When we planned a last minute trip to Portland, I was told by multiple people to come here. Unfortunately, there were no reservations as it was re-opening after being closed for a long time.Lucky for me, we landed and I got a notification that a reservation was available. I loved sitting outdoors for this entire meal. We also did the alcohol pairing and I'm so happy we did. The food was so unforgettable, the food amazing, and same with the drinks. I never wanted it to end.
