Came here for my bf & I's anniversary.
There aren't too many tasting menus in Philly so we wanted to try Laurel. It was a great dining experience over all, very intimate and attentive. Some of the tastings were a hit or miss for us.

What a nice dining experience! Our party of four landed a 5:30 PM reservation on a Saturday at Laurel. Some may argue that's senior citizen dining time, but I would much rather dine earlier than in the later hours of the evening. Who can sleep well on a full stomach? The path to "early bird special" dining will be an easy one for me!We enjoyed a 6 course tasting menu and we decided to partake in the wine paring:* Caviar course - the maple egg mousse and brioche for smearing was a wonder balance. And the brioche was warm!* Celery Root - white sauce along with delicate celery root* Halibut - brown butter roasted, shitake mushrooms and a smidge of trout roe* Quail - caramelized onions, rice, and a hint of truffle* Dry aged beef - radish, pickled beans, and vinegar for balance* Chocolate Cremeaux - perfect end to the meal. Smooth and creamy! The wines were carefully paired, and we were thankful for the lack of chardonnay. Word! Philadelphia continues to impress!

I think the uniqueness to Laurel is that, there aren't many places in the city that truly give you a Michelin Star type of experience...but Laurel is there. From service, to creativity in the dishes, to the innovative plating...they capitalize on the experience. It comes at a Michelin price, but I would say if you value good food, quality service, and a fine-dining atmosphere, then it is worth the visit. They have a wine pairing to compliment their 6 course pre-fixe menu. I also want to call out that they are great at accommodating vegetarians. They provided my wife with her own meal that matched the main menu. Below is what we had to eat, with some pictures to go along with it. I can say upfront, I thought the quail was the most interesting dish. It was a tender piece of meat, with some oily factors similar to duck, and just totally elevated with the truffle and caramelized onion. Really nice combination of sweet and savory. Surprisingly, I thought the dessert stole the show, which was a Pomelo-Yuzu Curd with Olive Oil, Rose, and Coconut. While it was a fantastic way to cap the evening on such a refreshing disk...it does leave me wondering this question of how good was the food really...if the dessert is what ultimately stood out as the "WOW" dish? Course 1: Bowfin Caviar, Egg L'Arpege, Brown Butter Maple Egg Mousse, BriocheCourse 2: Bay Scallops, Roasted Parsnip Dashi, Kumquat, Pickled Spruce Tip, Coconut Course 3: Brown Butter ROasted Striped Bass, Sunchoke Shiitake Mushroom, Trout Roem Fig LeafCourse 4: Black Tea-Brined Quail, Caramelized Onion, Black & Tan Rice, Date, Truffle Course 5: Dry Aged Beef, Preserved Berries, Parsley Root, Salsify Course 6: Pomelo-Yuzu Curd, Olive Oil, Rose, Coconut Now I have to share the mistake we made, to hopefully save others from doubling down, but we started with drinks and small plates at In The Valley (ITV), which is their sister restaurant & bar right next door. I have a separate review for this location, but the small plates at ITV mimicked what was offered at Laurel. So that was a bit of a let down...since we didn't know what was being served at Laurel. Especially considering the cost as is, it would have been nice to know to just get drinks at ITV and save the food for Laurel.

Acceptionally seasoned. Absolute perfection. And I never mentioned the old fashioned. I have zero negative comments. Awesome.

The tasting menu features really fresh ingredients that have clean, strong flavors. I liked the farm to table aspect of the restaurant. The only option is a tasting menu for $140, and I was a little disappointed in the portions and the length of the meal for this price point. We were there for about an hour, and unlike other tasting menus at similar prices, portions seemed smaller and a bit hurried. The food itself was excellent, but I believe that there are better special occasion tasting menu options in Philly than Laurel.

Fantastic place, food, and service! We opted for the tasting menu which was 7 courses. A few of my favs were the quail, the caviar, and the yuzu curd dessert (seriously did not expect to love this!!) .. just exquisite food with fantastic presentation. There is an option for wine pairing but we did not choose it this time. Overall, great experience - a bit pricey but worth it especially for a celebration or special event.

An excellent tasting menu with attentive service, intimate lighting and excellent dishes. Tasting Menu for 2 for my Birthday Celebration. Reservations made about 1 month in advance. We did add in an additional truffle pasta dish, which was totally worthwhile.Ambience: Darker lighting and decor is darker, plates/dishes are beautifully plated, service is attentive and friendlyMenu: 1 - Coconut custard, English pea, Bowfin caviar, salty fingers - a great start to the meal bursting with flavors2 - Hiromasa, Strawberry ponzu, salted green almond, frozen sorrel3 - Lobster-crusted scallop, blue moon acres rice, sweet corn, garlic scapeOne of my favorite and best cooked scallops I've hadTruffle pasta - one of the best gnocchi dishes I've had, so light and fluffy4 - Truffle-stuffed skate, stinging nettles, puffed brown rice, chicken jus The fish was cooked quite nicely and had a really strong flavor5 - Hudson Valley Duck, Knotweed, bluefoot chanterelle, milkweed capers, mulberryUnlisted- this dish had bee pollen, which gave me an unpleasant bitter globus sensation with ear tinglingMy partner enjoyed the dish a lot though, the duck was cooked beautifully6 - Vanilla-rose panna cotta, fresh & pickled strawberry, white chocolate - This finishing dish really packed an excellent punch of flavor, the pickling was an interesting technique to accentuate the strawberry flavor with a soft and creamy textureTips/Takeaways: I actually ended up having an allergic reaction, and it took me about two months worth of testing to identify the culprit (stinging nettles and bee pollen, go figure), but the restaurant staff were accommodating in getting me a samples of ingredients to bring to my doctor for further testing, and were prompt in their email replies.Really great menu and interesting combinations of ingredients. I enjoyed the meal and think it's a great restaurant.

Honestly, I was really looking forward to it, but it didn't taste good. And there was a male employee, who was racist . We were the only Asians, but he was unfriendly to us. The same goes for the male chef here! And I was disgusted by the smell of dessert plates. I don't think I washed the dishes properly. I really didn't want to eat the dessert on the plate, but I took two bites because of the chef's sincerity. I felt uncomfortable. It was my birthday, but there was nothing special. Please don't waste your money and time!
Be the first to ReplyExtremely underwhelming.
This was my 2nd time at Laurel & it was unfortunately a big disappointment. The service is great, the wine & cocktails are amazing, & the ambiance is very pleasant however with that said, every single dish was a disappointment. There was never a wow moment, there were no memorable dishes, & while I kept thinking " the next one is going to be good" I kept getting let down. I ordered their add ons for premium wine pairing & the A5 wagyu & they couldn't salvage the evening's underwhelming food. While I do think the restaurant has a lot of potential, after multiple visits, I can't say it lives up to the hype or is comparable to other restaurants in the city with a similar offering. With that said, if you want amazing cocktails, their adjacent bar next door, ITV, is great!
