L'Avant-Garde Washington Reviews from The Last Year
Went into this meal very excited due to the Washingtonian
Went into this meal very excited due to the Washingtonian ranking and menu but my friends and I left disappointed. The common theme for what we ordered was lack of flavor. I had foie gras to start and while the presentation was great, it really didn't taste like much. When combined with the cherries and sorbet on the plate, I couldn't taste the foie gras at all. Same was true of the steak tartare and tuna tartare that my friends ordered. I had the duck breast as my main and it tasted more like overcooked brisket. A friend has the cassoulet and indicated it was bland. The cocktails, wine, ambiance and service were all great but for being #9 on the Washingtonian Top 100 list, we were all disappointed with the food.
We returned to what we had perceived to be our favorite
We returned to what we had perceived to be our favorite restaurant in DC and my, oh my have things changed. Blue jeans were present all of sudden, but the lovely and elegant sommelier was still there. We were not seated at our usual table, we were seated under the exhaust for the kitchen and the aroma was a distinct smell of grease. We noticed constant pomme frittes emerging. The menu was suddenly not en francaise and resembled one more like a brassarie. Our appetizer of foie gras featured still frozen cherries and cherries soaked in liqour. Even the bread was newly simple, a very lonely itty bitty baggutte and a lump of buerre. My husband had difficulty breathing due to the exhaust and could not finish his skewered lamb. Our entrees were held up so we were given an additional dessert. We were served a peach melba that looked like something from how I remember as a teenager, from Friendlys, mile high whipped cream too sweet and a mess. Sorry, we won't be back. Looking for a new favorite restaurant. The elegance est disparu. Tant pis. In comparison the food at Diplomat is far better.
Cocktails were impressive.
Super creative and delicious! Lunch prix fixe menu was delicious.

We have now dined 3 times for good reason! Our last visit was excellent. The ambiance and service was warm and welcoming! The food was fabulous and the portions were big. Nobody left hungry to say the least. Some highlights were the Iberico ham and beef tartar to start as well as the duck breast and filet rossini for main courses! Definitely do not skip dessert, the strawberry macaron is not to be missed. We will definitely be back to try the rest of the menu!

The ambiance and greeting could not be nicer -- inside! We made the mistake of booking on the "terrace" (or La Terrasse" as it is listed on the website) and were shown to an unset table outside jutting into M Street with buses and trucks whizzing by. Even though the night was a rare clear and cool Washington summer evening and normally would beg for an outside table, we were happy that they had a table inside for us. (I was seated under a powerful a/c vent and was freezing all night alas.). The prices are among the highest in DC, save for a reasonable bottle of Bordeaux, and that would be OK if the food justified it. But the food disappointed overall. The green salad was delightful. The Bouillabaisse was a mess. Way too much saffron and garlic, and the lobster and mussels were way overcooked and tough. The piece of branzino was the saving grace -- delicious. The vegetarian plate looked hopeful (leeks wrapped in nori) but the leeks weren't seasoned at all and the nori was too thick and tough. The person in our party who ordered the chicken rated it highly. Given our poor overall experience with the mains, we skipped dessert. The service was gracious and efficient. We had high hopes for the place but they were not fulfilled. We are unlikely to return.

This tops the list of my favorite restaurants in DC! Came for an early Mother's Day celebration and the experience was nothing short of spectacular. The service is incredible and all the staff go above and beyond to make you feel welcome. There was not a single dish that wasn't a hit. I ordered the duck as my entree and it's a dish I will be going back for! The mama at the table order the filet mignon and she said it was the best she'd ever had--and she's had her fair share of filets so that's high praise. The ambiance is perfect for any occasion, whether date night or a family celebration, so I look forward to coming back with different groups of people to share this experience with them!
Chef Sebastian's grandmother's recipe soup was delicious.
Eggplant salad, drinks and desserts all great. However we were disappointed with lobster fettuccine dish. It was very average. Service is attentive. I would return to this restaurant to try other dishes.
Loved the ambiance.
Very interesting decor. Wish I had sat near the fireplace. Service was awesome and attentive Food made us all happy but you have to get the bouillabaisse and the duck fat old fashioned were my favorites. Great presentation

This fine dining restaurant in DC is serving up some of the best French cuisine in the area. Started off with their Octopus, Foie Gras, and La Bouillabisse de Pierrette (seafood soup). For the main course we got the Sea Bass, Duck Breast, and Filet Mignon Rossini. For dessert I got the Macaron with a poached pear and caramel. Everything was absolutely amazing. I don't eat French food often, but this has been the best French food I have had. The only thing I was not a fan of was the Foie Gras. It was so rich that it almost made it unenjoyable. Aside from that, it was great food! Service was also top notch as well. Great spot for an anniversary or special date night.

Walked into this beautiful restaurant with an open mind and left with a highly satisfied palette and an experience to remember. L'Avant Garde has top tier ambiance. I walked in and was met with great service, attitudes and a roaring fireplace. The table settings, decor and art all were the perfect starters to a delicious evening. Even though I was 19 minutes late (with a warning), the hostess greeted me with kindly and brought me to my table next to the fire place. Louis, my server, was prompt, talked highly of the dishes, and made sure everything was up to standard. Thank you for your professionalism and help. Drinks: Un Bordeaux Sour- Top three cocktail I have ever had. Strong, flavorful, and refreshing. If anything, it was art in a glass. Food: Baguette and Butter- I've never been to France, but this opening bread item was more satisfying than I anticipated. Beef Tartare- This is a large serving of beef tartare. A little more than I was expecting. I'd recommend it for a group, because it was hard for me to finish on my own. Diver Sea Scallops- gorgeous presentation, perfectly cooked, and is the best scallop dish I have ever had. Le Filet Mignon- Simple, tender, perfectly cooked, and is probably top 2-3 steaks I have ever had. (Do you see a trend?) Duck Breast- The duck dish probably had the most explosion of flavors. It was fun and colorful. The duck was just mouth watering. I didn't love a lot of the extra components in the dish. The gala apples are better for show and something else wasn't very appetizing, but cabbage and sauce was amazing. Overall, this establishment was amazing. I'd be interested to see if they will have daily specials or change the menu. 9.5/10
We visited L'Avant Garde to celebrate our anniversary.
It's in a nice location. The service was great, greeted by several staff upon walking in and our server Eric took good care of us. We enjoyed all of our food and drinks. I really liked the sauces that came with the steak and also my first drink, Visiting the Neighbors (not pictured). The vibe/decor is cool, each section of the place has a different feel. Yes, it was pricey, but we went for a special occasion. Would recommend for a romantic date night.
This used to be undisputedly my FAVORITE French restaurant
This used to be undisputedly my FAVORITE French restaurant in the DMV area. I was happy when they temporarily closed down to do a renovation (back room would be freezing cold and could use a remodel). I went back as soon as they reopened to find out the entire menu has changed and worse the chef had left. I was so disappointed with every dish we ordered that I did not finish a single course. Grilled octopus app was overcooked and crunchy. Sea bass tasted like it was just boiled; very bland. Cocktails were also nowhere near as good as the past. Did not care for the strawberry dessert either (bring back the macaroon and soufflé). New chef clearly is not up to par. Will not be returning anymore sadly. Service was also very poor. Go to Marcels for a much better dining experience.
Very excellent.
Polished, friendly and professional service. Great food. The chicken entree particularly noteworthy. Looking forward to returning.
This place by no means is bad, I do not think anything on
This place by no means is bad, I do not think anything on their menu could be classified as bad, well, maybe their foie gras over celery, but the dishes are good, but for the hype and the prices they are extremely underwhelming. People who say they have had their best meal in life here clearly have not traveled to France I'm afraid. First the good, the service was phenomenal. We had a party of four and our server (do not remember his name) was outstanding. Nothing bad to say about our service. The cocktails are very good as well, although extremely overpriced, but so is everything now in DC so just roll with the punches. The ambience is nice, very romantic setting, this place is perfect for a nice date, you're just gonna spend more than you should and there are better places in DC. Now the dishes: octopus, very nice, risotto (from the main section) very tasty, foie gras, absolutely tasteless and instantly forgettable. I think there is better foie gras at a grocery store than the one here, it is that sad, and none of the flavors compliment each other. For these prices I want something that makes me say, "damn, this is some good ass foie gras, pricey but worth it. The scallops were delicious, the filet mignons were good but not outstanding, and the pommes frites and the pommes puree were so flavorless considering they are supposedly fried in some delicious ingredient that I forget what it is now because McDonalds fries have more flavor, and maybe that's an unfair comparison, but any seasoning would have been nice. Before you judge me as an average pain in the ass American, my family is from France and I expect perfection from a place like this if you are charging perfect Recession-minimum-wage taxation-without-representation DC prices. The only thing that I can say that blew us away and is worth every penny is the Chocolate suffle, that is worth whatever the hell it cost. If you charge $50 for that it's worth it, I don't mind paying $50 per dish if it tastes good as hell. Sadly, this place is not it. There are at least two other spots in the vicinity that are better. It costs us after tip over $650 for four to have a nice meal, spend a nice time, with less than memorable food except for that dessert. From others reviews it looks like that dessert is from another spot, which would make sense unfortunately. Oh, and I was still hungry , did I forget to add that part? Go somewhere else.

Divine from door to dessert!!! Great location and a lovely, intimate vibe inside. The staff are really attentive and so very professional. Samantha, their ever charming sommelier, was a superb guide throughout. And then there's the food!!! We took friends for a milestone birthday celebration last night and we were all just dazzled by our dining experience! Chef Gilles Epie is simply masterful and even came by our table to wish our friend a happy birthday--such a class act! His amuse bouche of a red pepper mousse was unexpected and wonderful. And then we had the cured salmon with the potato & carrot slices with juniper berries that was just sublime. Even the green salad was special and actually an incredible presentation--I mean when do you hear that?! Our entrées (poulet rôti, the branzino, & the turbot) were each perfectly cooked and presented. And the piping hot, crisp yet tender side of pommes frites was oh mon dieu! The raspberry macaron with vanilla mascarpone cream and the butter salted caramel soufflé were both ahhhhhhmazing. If you enjoy fine dining and a sophisticated night out, L'Avant Garde should be at the top of your list!

Arguably one of the best meals of my life! Food and service were extraordinary! We had a party of 8 and were seated in the semi-private room. All of this added to a spectacular night!
L'Avant Garde live up to its reputation as a great French
L'Avant Garde live up to its reputation as a great French restaurant in Georgetown. Seamless service, enticing food presentation, delicious, authentic French cooking. Upscale decor and ambiance; music just right (French music even), not too loud. Their Bee French cocktail not only comes with a funny name but also contains calvados, a Normandy pear wine. The other cocktail that's great is called Les plaines d'Oaxaca (fruity and smooth). For the appetizer (called entree in French), I recommend their grilled octopus. Tender and perfectly paired with potato. The sea scallops as a main is one of the highlights. Truly a masterpiece.
L'Avant Garde is giving French Excellence! Their French
L'Avant Garde is giving French Excellence! Their French food is next level and it's going to have you begging for more. The cocktails and desserts were my absolute favorite, but you really can't go wrong with anything here. Smoke and Bubbles - Smokey strawberry perfection Old Fashioned Au Canard - loved the orange marmalade I Said Enough - the best espresso martini I've ever had! Scrambled Eggs & Caviar - bougie and delicious Bouillabaisse- loved the puff pastry and soup flavors Dry Aged Chateubrand - beautiful steak and the sauce is fantastic Branzino & Foie Gras - my new favorite interpretation of surf and turf! Salted Caramel Soufflé - executed to a tee! Lemon Panna Cotta - perfect consistency and flavor This is the perfect spot to impress your date or client. The bar is a great option if you're just looking to grab cocktails and small bites.

It depends how far out in the future your reservation is. If you posted a reservation hat was 2 months out, it’s unlikely many people will view your reservation. It could also be that your reservation is just not desirable.
