Shocked to see some of these low-starred reviews.
Yes, the portions are small, though not as small as Michelin-star restaurants, don't expect a huge salad or entree. If you're ordering ravioli, expect it to be smaller than a spaghetti pasta dish. I'd suggest that if you come here hungry, order a salad and another appetizer to start before your entree. The food is actually incredible. My second time here - in January I got the spaghetti vongole, and last night, I got the spaghetti tutto mare (seafood pasta) which was exceptional. The calamari was tender, the flavors were there, and the portion was perfect imo. It's a fine dining restaurant so you shouldn't expect to stuff your face. If you're expecting a family-style Italian restaurant, this isn't it. I recommend their Ceasar salad with polenta croutons (they taste like crispy potatoes). I gave the restaurant four stars because our dinner was at 730pm for a party of nine in the wine cellar room, the service was nearly absent so a lot of waiting around. But in my first experience in the main dining room, the service was excellent.

This was the worst Italian food I have had and especially at the wallet gouging price. We were four of us yesterday and none of the entrees were flavorful. Almost all of the food seemed like they were shlopped on the plate like we see in movies during prison scenes, served to prisoners. The prices were exorbitant. Let's just say the return on investment (ROI) was negative. BTW they don't tell you this that the tiny bread basket costs $4 each. They bring it to you, you believe it's complimentary as in every restaurant, you eat it and they bring more bread baskets. At the end you are left with your eyes rolling for being gouged for mediocre bread and awful food.

The ambiance and food was generally really good, and a nice warm, quiet find on a Sunday evening is always a pleasure. However, the price point felt a bit higher than the quality and inattentive service warranted. Vegetarian dishes were notably overpriced-- there was very little differentiation and the creativity in the meatless dishes was fairly lacking. The wine list was good and overall, the food didn't disappoint, it just didn't quite hit the mark for the higher price point, compared to similar Italian offerings in the Santa Monica and Venice neighborhoods.
Be the first to ReplyThis is most overrated restaurant.
Four of us agree: dismal. The pasta dishes were mush. They were swimming in overloaded tomato sauce..all of them ...even though the dishes were not so described. The porcini mushrooms would not be see dead in their ravioli (even if they were even there as advertised). The appertisers and deserts were flavorless. The BREAD was the best--from a third party supplier- no doubt. Save yourselves the embarrassment.
Be the first to ReplyThe food is very good, but overpriced.
Same with the wines. I saw a bottle of wine that looked like it would be decent, based on the $175 price tag. When it came, I thought it was rather bland. I felt maybe is had to wait until it opened up. It didn't. Then I googled the wine (A 2019 Chateau La Paz). It retails for $45. The price charged was almost 4 times retail. Really? Give your clients more than they expect, not less. It is not appropriate to charge $175 for a $45 bottle of wine. The food was good, but also overpriced. I know Montana is known for higher prices, but also give your clients higher experiences.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious authentic pastas.
Authentic and handsome Italian owner and chef! Mamma Mia! it's a small restaurant. Very intimate and romantic! You can taste the love and the quality that goes into the dish!!

Be the first to ReplyI had just moved to Santa Monica and was so excited to try
I had just moved to Santa Monica and was so excited to try all the great restaurants on Montana Ave! So many wonderful, delicious options ... I had such high expectations for this charming-looking place, and actually recommended we go there for a business lunch. Now I know why it was so easy to get a reservation. To summarize - the wait staff is snobbish and was downright rude; ignored our table for over 20 minutes without so much as a glass of water to cater to guests who arrived after we were seated but they were obviously repeat customers and looked wealthier than we did, I suppose; perhaps sexism played a role as we were three (well-dressed professional) women and the other guests (who were fawned over) were all male. The food was delicious - but as others have said, portions were tiny and prices were outrageously high. Add the mandatory tip into the equation - along with the hundreds of fabulous, warm, inviting, welcoming Italian restaurants in the area - ensures I'll never be back, even though it's only a block away.
Be the first to Replywe had dinner with 2 other couples there.
The service was so slow and trouble. our Italian waiter was so rude with a trouble sense of humor. The food was overpriced and nothing special, kind of so so. The portion was a joke. We were actually joking about it saying this is the sample, so if we like it we can order it. My husband asked the waiter if he could have angel hair instead of spaghetti for his pasta. he said yes but he brought the spaghetti. My husband said but I asked for angel hair. The waiter just threw the plate on the table in a very rude manor and said, ok, free. Don't pay for it. We were all shocked. my husband said, I don't want it free, I just want what I asked for. The waiter picked up the plate and threw it to the other side of our table and said, ok, don't eat it. I bring you the Angel hair. His behavior was unbelievable. I agree with the other review from Wendy Z. maybe we were not the typical white crowd that they are used to because there was no other reason for being so rude. On top of that, the portions were so small and way overpriced. I should have taken a picture of the salad, literally 2 piece of lettuce and a few piece of tomatoes. Don't they have any shame to bring that to your table? I will never ever go back to that restaurant even if it is the last and the only restaurant on earth. I had never been this angry about my dining experience. If I could I would give it a zero star.
Be the first to ReplyHands down the best Italian restaurant in Los Angeles.
Truly authentic Italian, the pasta dishes are a must. They have the original penne vodka, best! Spaghetti portofino, and the speciality Botarga pasta and uni pasta are unbelievable. The breaded veal with capers also to die for! Best appetizers are the provolo Al forno melted cheese with mushrooms and tomatoes, and put prosciutto.

Everything was delicious and the place looked very charming. 10 starts for the customer service!
Be the first to ReplyTruly upset with this place and I was really looking
Truly upset with this place and I was really looking forward to eating here. Started off badly with a rude waiter was very cold and unpleasant (should not be working in costumer service) The food was way to salty and it over powered the pasta couldn't taste anything other than salt, what made me give this place a 1 star and a review like this is that before we left we left the waiter a 12% tip (cash) which is fair enough and walked out he ran after us to say "our change" and we told him keep it and he said "standard is 15%" and was just standing there waiting for more money. You should not be demanding more money when we left a 12% tip. Truly disappointed. Wont be back.
Be the first to ReplyAn absolute gem on Montana ave.
Incredible pasta. Incredible Milanese. Incredible service. The staff really make you feel welcomed. I highly recommend this eatery.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent quality Italian food.
Made and served by competent Italian staff. Nice setting in Santa Monica. One of the most traditional Italian restaurants in the LA area.
Be the first to ReplyI used to love this place until I encountered rude service
I used to love this place until I encountered rude service on January 26, 2022. I asked for a sample of wine before buying a glass and the waiter said they don't do samples due to COVID and it wasn't true because I just had lunch at this place a week or so ago and another nice waiter gave me samples and helped me decide on a wine. Worse, he insisted on the no sample even after I told him I dined there a few days ago and had a sample. To top off the bad experience, he was upset I only ordered a baked Parmesan and didn't order a main dish. He kept pushing that this dish is small and I had to order something else. Just rude.

This hyped up Italian establishment apparently has the reputation of being one of the finer Italian restaurants in Santa Monica. I beg to differ, the food is over priced, the portions are small, and the taste is nothing to write home about. If you are hungry don't come here. (The penne vodka does the job of a Starbucks cake pop in terms of filling u up). If you think that you will have a nice dining experience don't come here. (It took 30 minutes for a waiter to realize we were here, and after this poor service we were surprised with an unexpected 20% service charge). Can you believe it? I cannot. This restaurants is meant for people who have nothing better to do with their money than waste it on a greedy owners idea of a fine Italian dining experience. I can tell you from first hand that my experience was quite the opposite.
Be the first to ReplyWaited 15 minutes for any acknowledgement and had to ask
Waited 15 minutes for any acknowledgement and had to ask for water. Our actual server didn't come to the table after being seated for 30 minutes. Then with that they added a 20% service charge which equates to a 11 dollar tip for 5 people, which the food and service was not worth.
Be the first to Reply4 of us had a late lunch at this restaurant on Christmas
4 of us had a late lunch at this restaurant on Christmas Day. The outdoor dining area was nicely decorated and 'cozy' With enough heaters to warm the space on that chilly day. But, that's where the kudos end. The service was pleasant and just okay, the maitre d' was nice but curt, and the food was marginal at best. We understand it was a holiday, but the prices were truly outrageous. We don't mind spending $$ for good food, but we do take offense to eating mediocre food and paying double what it's worth. In addition, everything was an additional cost: a basket with 4 very small pieces of baguette bread was $3.00; 3 anchovies that weren't even whole, added to a very small and pricey Caesar Salad, cost $5.00; one of our party asked for a side of spaghetti and was told that you had to order a whole dish at $27.00. We we're disappointed and will not be returning to Locanda Portofino.
Be the first to ReplySo the main reason this place isn't getting a full 5 stars
So the main reason this place isn't getting a full 5 stars is because of the slow wait staff. When it comes to the food, it is excellent exclamation poan! I personally like the meatballs, eggplant appetizer, and the veal milaneze. It's a cute little Scott and has bluff outdoor and indoor dining. I suggest that you call in advance to ensure your spot for reservation. Enjoy
