This place used to be the absolute best.
Then Lucien retired and left his incompetent son in charge to destroy the place, and destroyed it is. The food and the vibe were the best in the city if you wanted excellent French food with a cool downtown vibe. Now, you get horrible and horribly overpriced food with the overcrowded ambiance of a Gen Z pickup joint, as the son's friends crowd in for free drinks. I guess it's fun if you're them but it's a shame that the food quality and ambiance for anyone over 22 had to go straight to Hell because of it. I guess nepo babies ruin restaurants too. If you used to go to this place for the 15 or so years where it was as good as downtown had to offer then you know exactly why what it has devolved into is so heartbreaking. Lucien, we miss you!!! Oh well, there's still the vestiges of Raoul's, if you can block out the investment bros blathering, for a bit of a reminder of what downtown used to be about.

Four thinly-measly sliced tuna slices for a Nicoise Salad ($38). Usually, the raw tuna-slices are thicker cut like steak. The salad itself barely had any dressing. I had to ask a waitress for a side of dressing. This French bistro is extremely overpriced. At best, this Nicoise salad as presented should have costed $20. Maybe their overhead is too high? Anyway, I won't be returning. A glass of wine French wine ($17). $38 + $17 = $55 * 8.875 NYC sales tax = $59.81 Total: $60 + $10 tip equals to $70 for one person, and you're still hungry. If you're hungry, I do not recommend. You'll go broke here, and the Niçoise salad didn't taste amazing, and the temperature of the salad was quite cold. Shouldn't the salad be room temperature? I'd rather dine at Balthazar in SoHo. I would come here for the vibe and a few drinks. The waitresses are cute but who cares.
Be the first to ReplyI want to be a regular here.
Fresh off my RAF's lunch I came to Lucien. I haven't dined here in decades but like Balthazar it serves food so reliably good in a magical room. Bread is fresh and plentiful & the most expensive red wine by the glass was $16. I felt immediately unrushed and welcome so I ordered a wine. $16 which was very good. Ate: Mesculin salad $11 Qual $28 The salad was generous and tasty. And my qual was a home run- wow. Cooked in a cherry sauce if was delectable. Old school is the best school.

Beautiful beautiful restaurant great ambience, however, very "whatever food" We started with the sardines which were nice, and the escargot that lacked a little bit of flavor. I had the steak frites which was nice, large portion and my partner had the duck confit which he said it's the worst duck confit to ever come out of the kitchen. The skin was soggy, and it was completely under seasoned, and the sauce was underwhelming. Sorry martini were OK espresso martinis were OK service was good. Would come back for drinks and the ambience and maybe a few fries. Or potentially try other items off the menu.

*This review is for my experience with the owner's mother* I've been going to Lucien ever for many years, and I never in my life have been treated so disgustingly by a human being. I was having drinks with a friend at the bar tonight, and this older woman (the owner Zach's mom) comes up to us, screaming about my dog, and how we need to leave. She keeps accusing me that my dog is not a service dog and tells me that he's not trained and I as the owner I'm not trained either. She is screaming at me telling me that he's not a service dog and he can't be here which is ILLEGAL. This woman got in my face, was Violent and nasty and causing a scene in her own restaurant. I, as a patron was extremely calm. I did not deserve to be treated this way. I wouldn't be surprised if this had something to do with race either. I will never be coming back to this establishment again, and I am traumatized by this woman's behavior.
Be the first to ReplyThe ambience is very lovely, but oh too crowded.
We were sat at a table close to the entry way and when people were coming in for their reservations their coats were brushing our table. It was also a bit rainy that night and my date had mentioned rain was getting on his back as the door opened. Very tight and not very organized, we waited about 35 min for our table and not much room to stand and have a drink while waiting. Tuna tartare was ok, bread service was below average. However the cod and steak au poivre was very enjoyable.
Be the first to ReplyLucien is a vibe.
If you come here you know you are coming for the ambiance more than the food. The food is good, but its not as good as you would expect for the price point. Its a restaurant filled with the posh Soho-ish (although its in the east village) scene of NYC, including models, attractive stylish people, a celeb or two, and people in the industry. If you are there for drinks at the bar then you are in the perfect place. The bar is small, and is usually full, but if you can grab a seat and just hangout then you won't be disappointed you did. Its a cozy spot, and cozy in NYC means very small, so you will be on top of others whether its at the bar, or dining in the restaurant, but in a weird way it is the right amount of people. There is a high price point on most drinks and food, so if you are looking for a really great french restaurant then I would come here for the drinks, and dine somewhere else.
Be the first to ReplyNice atmosphere, tables are kind of low though.
We came just for dessert and the profiteroles were pretty good. Some people at our table didn't like them (they are filled with ice cream here). I thought the chocolate was delicious, it's a matter of preference though as sometimes they are made with cream/more like a cream puff.

I am a lover of fine French dining and Lucien has mastered the recipe. Such delicious food served in such a sophisticated way, Lucien is a favorite in my family.

Be the first to ReplyLucien was one of my favorite places in Manhattan for years.
Then the original owner retired and his son took over. His son who wants to spend all his time hanging out in the restaurant with his friends. I'm pretty sure it's not a coincidence that right around that time the quality and serving size of the dishes went downhill. This was the coziest, classiest, most wonderful restaurant. Now it's cheap (quality, not price), loud, and unappealing on multiple levels. It used to feel like you were in Paris; now it feels like you're on Ave D.

I really like this place and the food is delicious, however, my partner felt incredibly uncomfortable when the waitress gave us the bill. We are generally great tippers, and leave gratuity based on service. Our waitress wasn't amazing, and not terrible, therefore in my eyes 18% is good. When she handed us the machine, I watched her in the mirror hovering over my partner who paid the bill. I knew he felt pressured and uncomfortable. I ended up taking the machine from his hand and clicking 18% for him. The waitress looked visibly upset that it wasn't 22% (the percentage that was already highlighted). Passively ripping the receipt and throwing it on the table, not even saying thank you. I'm a server myself, and I've never hovered over guests when they chose gratuity and always say thank you. I was here a weekend prior to this visit with other family. We were not treated this way by another waitress, who was kinder to us. Just odd our waitress did this, and I was upset that she didn't think 18% was good. All she did was take our orders. Not even clean the table or pick up plates. Entitlement at its finest.

This place was packed, likely due to the small size of the place and the people standing around waiting. I felt like we were just on top of each other. The food was fine - it wasn't bad but nothing special.

My partner and I went to Lucien when we were last in New York, and our only regret is that we didn't come sooner. Reservations are limited and by phone only. I recommend calling a few weeks ahead of time. When we arrived, they were still getting the table ready, so we ordered a couple white Negronis at the bar. Before the bartender could finish our drinks, our table was ready. It is a small space, so you will be directly next to someone and hear their conversation, but that's to be expected in New York and is part of the experience. Our server was wonderful and recommended a bottle of red which we ended up loving. For dinner got the escargot, octopus, and the steak frites. All were exceptional, although the steak was a tad undercooked. The highlight of the meal was the profiteroles dessert. DO NOT skip dessert! We grabbed the host's number when leaving so we can make a reservation next time we're back!
Be the first to ReplyLove this place.
My favorite steak in NYC. The staff is very accommodating and the service is fast. It's hard to get a reservation, but if you walk up to the bar and grab a seat you can eat there.

Be the first to ReplyI reluctantly came to dinner here.
I read past reviews about the hostesses being rude but they were quite nice. The servers judge you if you block the bar area among faces at people. In addition, our server asked us 11 times if we wanted more food when we were completely content. She was mad that we didn't want more food so she told her manager to basically kick us out right at 9pm even though we had a 7:30pm reservation. Who kicks people out like that. They don't speculate that in their reservation policy - which there is no reservation policy FYI. Oh yes and also as many other people mentioned, glasses were breaking and hit my girlfriend on the back. DO NOT GO HERE. So many better places in NYC. Heed this warning.
Be the first to ReplyAmbience and service was nice.
Food, however, was overpriced and not good - food poisoning next day.
Be the first to ReplyMy boyfriend and I came here for dinner.
We had a 9pm reservation that we made 2 months in advance. At 10pm we still had not been seated. After 1.5 hours of waiting, we finally left. If you don't personally know the staff, would highly recommend going somewhere else for dinner, or else you will likely also wait over 1.5 hours for your table that is smushed next to another couple.

Got the steak au poivre frites, moule frites, pate, mesclun salad, asparagus salad, dozen oysters, merguez, octopus and the chocolate cake. All good and the scene wasn't as annoying as I thought it would be. Would go back for the steak or mussels. Good portions on the mussels.
Be the first to ReplyThe reviews are mostly right about this place.
It's very overhyped and truly seems like a place where people go for the scene more than anything else, but not everything was bad. As others mentioned, they make you wait even when you have a reservation. This worked out well for me because I'm always late, and once I arrived, everyone was seated. In terms of the food, we ordered the escargot, mussels in white wine sauce, rabbit over pappardelle pasta, filet mignon with peppercorn sauce, and the duck. My favorites were the escargot and filet mignon. The escargot had this delicious garlic and herbs sauce, and the filet mignon was cooked perfectly medium rare. The fries were nice and crispy, and I loved the peppercorn sauce. I also loved their warm, crusty bread,I think we went through 5 different bread baskets. The desserts were nothing special, we had the chocolate cake and creme brulee. With the alcohol our bill came out to around $900. Just as others mentioned, they definitely did something to make you over tip with their tricky calculations so you need to pay close attention. The service was mostly ok but this one man would just come and try to away our food without even asking if we were done eating which was quite rude. The rudest person was a very pale waitress with short black hair. I'm glad I tried it out, but this is not a place that I need to repeat.

I don't really have words but this has been on my list for a while since it's such a popular restaurant, but wow. This place is awful I don't understand what the hype is about. Service was insanely awful, so rude. The food was equally as bad- my friend and I didn't eat our food and the waitress didn't say a word. They put our wine bottle next to us and put the table to next to us' bread plate ON TOP OF THE WINE GLASS to save fucking space as my friend is gluten free. This place sucks. End of story do not go here.

I wasn't going to say anything because despite not having a manager on duty (on a FRIDAY NIGHT?!), someone removed my entree from the check after I pleaded, however my bf is sleeping after violent stomach cramping and you know what, about 18 hours later! Thank you for seating us sans reservation on a early Friday evening, but that is the last good thing. We sat down in the cramped front (that is ok at nicer restaurants where people know how to use their "inside voice") and after a few minutes a waitress took our order. Most important thing to know: wine comes in PORT GLASSES (intended for after dinner drinks) here! Be prepared to spend $15 for a "glass" of Cotes du Rhone. I asked the waitress for her opinion (I inquired about the chicken and short rib only) and she promptly told me the best dish in the house was the au poivre (which just so happens to be the most expensive individual entree). If that is truly the best thing there, then they should close. "Cracked" pepper sauce is supposed to have large chunks of peppercorns...It does not have ground pepper. I gladly often eat steak coated in ACTUAL crushed peppercorns (made by myself or French-trained chefs) and topped with the sauce one should ACTUALLY use if they are titling the dish "au poivre". I asked for medium, but it came out practically raw in the center and had no flavor of char on it. Sending it back would not do anything because it defied what was said on the menu: Lucien's "cracked" pepper sauce and au poivre, and the fried were also blah (turn up the heat on the oil!). I told the waitress I was sorry, but honestly her recommendation was not good at all and she let me sit there with an uneaten plate the whole time. Meanwhile my bf ate his "eggplant Napoleon". There were 2 pieces of eggplant not even lovingly layering in between a sauce or anything, on a pile of barley, and more zucchini was on the dish than eggplant. The menu description mentioned mixed vegetables (like on the side). It was a sad looking dish that he ate only half of. He paid $38 for a VEGETARIAN dish using the cheapest vegetable there is (with a touch of eggplant added). I asked to speak with a manager only to discuss MY DISH and how I should not have to pay for it if I literally did not eat more than ONE BITE. I never got the opportunity. I now would like to add that for those prices, you do not even give bread, you serve warm tap water on a hot day and have unhelpful, greedy waitstaff. In France serving is taken seriously, not as a contest to make people unhappy and spend more. I should have never let her sway me from my intended dishes and not have tipped on the original check amount. She did not deserve it! I served for 20 years in better establishments. Shame on this restaurant and shame on the rich trendies who keep it in business. One entree and a sip of wine cost $59 dollars!!! Add the 20 tip and I feel like I got some lube-free, loveless backdoor action.P.S. A little menu-description editing could go a long way, but you'd still be a hot mess (literally, fix the A/C).

Made a reservation over the phone, got there and they claimed they didn't have it. Made for an extremely inconvenient birthday dinner
Be the first to ReplyI was surprised the rating is so low for this restaurant.
I found the food delicious just quite expensive (even with inflation). The tart tatin was delicious just very small given the price. I will go back but it's not a place I go too often given the price (plenty of more comfortable places for about same cost). Also as other commented here, I'm surprised so many 20 something's can afford this restaurant as it's always filled with them.
