*** ARROGANT AND BAD SERVICE *** Called to book and while asking questions was abruptly told to walk in and hung up. As we were close by we decided to just walk in, only to be greeted by the same rude waiter who did not at all interested, when I asked to be seated inside he turned his back and walked off. All whilst the owner/chef looked on. WHAT IS WRONG with this snobbish restaurant?
Be the first to ReplyWent to Lulu La Delizia on a Friday night and it was packed.
Our booking was for 8pm and the reservation required us to leave at 9:30, which seemed odd. We ordered entrees, mains and shared a dessert and there was no way the service was fast enough for the restaurant to turn the table over that quickly. Our table wasn't ready when we arrived so we were shown to the barrel tables outside to wait with a drink. It was a little too cold to be comfortable sitting outside. The tables inside are really close together so it has a gregarious, lovely feel. We ordered bread, stracciatella burratta and meatballs with polenta for entree. All were delicious. The burratta was light and the beans on top were crunchy and a wonderful contrast to the soft wet cheese. The meatballs were rich and piping hot so the perfect comfort food for a cold night. We ordered wine by the glass and this is where the experience started to be less wonderful. All glasses are at least $15 each, going up to $29 each. This has the benefit of allowing the diner to taste a fancy bottle without committing to spending $200+ but the wines are mostly Italian and unknown to Perth diners. The main pasta arrived and the pear ravioli was amazing but the bolognese type pasta was just good. Portion sizes aren't huge but there is a lot of oil and salt in the food so it is quite rich and filling. It also took 45 mins to arrive. We preferred a tiramisu for dessert, which was a generous serving but appeared to have grappa in it, which I didn't love. Overall I enjoyed the meal but it was expensive for what it was and inconsistent. I had better meals at Lalla Rookh previously. I would not rush back.
Be the first to ReplyNot a fan.
The food was nice but way too salty. I also object to restaurants that decide to offer wine lists where the cheapest option for a bottle of red is $47 which is of the weak Italian variety. Finding nothing on the list I would prefer to drink I suggested I would go and buy a bottle and happily pay corkage. How much, I hear you ask? With an absolutely straight face the waiter said $100. Thinking he was joking I laughed. He was not joking. Suffice it to say I will not be returning. It will be interesting to see how long this place lasts. If you are looking for Italian in this area I suggest you try Piccolo Trattoria. Delicious rustic food, friendly and efficient staff and BYO with a $4 corkage.

We went to Lulu La Deliza after a few attempts to postpone the meal. I would say I have the best pasta in Perth town! The last best pasta place I went to was in New York! This restaurant is located in Subiaco. We ordered their today's special pasta which was a tobacco smoked pasta with pate cooked in prune and duck which was $32 dish. The dish itself is very tasty, the duck and the prune was well balanced the texture of the pasta was al dente. The serving is considered a bit small for the price that they were charging, the meat nor the prune wasn't a lot on the plate that we got. I was a bit disappointed but it's one of the tastier dish that we had. We had the meatballs with polenta as the entrรฉe, it was good! I might return if they charge less for their today's special. There are so many options out there for me to try next!
Be the first to ReplyFantastic food.
Went with the chefs choice menu and want disappointed. Great wine, attentive service. Best pasta in Perth
Be the first to ReplyWe all had the Chef's menu.
Each course was fantastic. Eating with some very savvy restauranters, only compliments were heard. An essentially faultless meal. Great service Even the tiny details - still or sparkling - both free. Just go

I've been dying to try Lulu La Delizia since it opened a few months ago and finally got around to it a few Friday evenings ago. Reservations are necessary! We had an early one at 6:30 and the place was still pretty packed, and later had a line out the door. The restaurant is small but very cosy, feels a bit like Nonna's old dining room but with nice modern touches. Great selection of wine here too. We decided to let the chef take charge so we ordered the chef's menu which is pretty good value at $62 per person for the huge amount of food you get. Our waitress was great, even though she was obviously very busy, when she was at your table she made conversation and was very relaxed. We had the pan e sugo to start, which was very tasty with nice cultured butter and a roasted veggie spread. Next up was the kingfish, which was pretty much a ceviche with the raw kingfish and diced up nectarine. It was a nice balanced dish (although not very Italian!). I loved the next dish for its simplicity - ripe figs with chunks of nutty parmigiano reggiano and olive oil - a true ode to showcasing fresh ingredients. Our last appetiser was the stracciatella di burrata. I love burrata for its soft and creamy texture but unfortunately this one was a bit watery and tasteless and the pickled veggies on top were not a good flavour combination with something so creamy. Our first pasta dish was not on the menu - a ricotta ravioli with sage, fig sauce, and softened apples and walnuts. It was a very interesting combination I wouldn't have thought of, but it worked. The fig sauce was a bit sweet, and I'm picky with my sweet and salty combos but I liked this one though it probably wouldn't have been my first choice. The last pasta dish was the special of the night - pigs blood spaghetti and prawns. Though it sounded a bit scary with the pigs blood, and prawns seems like a strange combo, it was actually pretty tasty though also not my pasta of choice. The waitress knew my husband was not much of a prawn fan but I guess wasn't able to get the chef to swap it out for a different dish. We didn't make a special request not to include prawns so we couldn't blame anyone. The dish itself was just too big, we could barely make a dent in it, and it was extremely rich. It could have used some different textures or flavours, after a few bites it felt a little blah (maybe also because at this stage we were extremely full!) The dessert was a burnt orange panna cotta. It was very tasty and not overly sweet, and it had a nice textural thing going on with cacao nibs, dried fruits and nuts crumbled off to the side. They were so thoughtful to also bring out 2 little spiced donuts with a candle in them as we told them it was my late birthday celebration. All in all, a nice spot with a clever menu. Though I didn't particularly love some of the dishes, I would still love to come and try a few more things on the menu as they change it up to align with seasonal ingredients.
Be the first to ReplyFormer chef at Lalla Rookh Joel Valvasori- Pereza recently
Former chef at Lalla Rookh Joel Valvasori- Pereza recently set up his own restaurant in Forrest Walk, Subiaco, and Lady FWO and I stopped in for lunch during the week. Styled a pasta and wine bar, this is a place where bookings seem to be essential and even more so at night. It was packed when we went and from all reports getting in for dinner is even harder - so make sure you book, and even more importantly make sure you go! Now anyone who has eaten at Lalla Rookh would know the delights of chef Valvasori's pasta dishes and in his new venture - named for his grandmother - he continues to jump the high bar he set. The pasta, all made in in-house, is sublime. The wine list is beautifully put together, with a great selection of Italian and Australian wines, including many of the funky new wave of wine makers who are shaking up the scene both here and abroad. Obviously the menu is built around pasta dishes - and unlike many spots the pasta rather than the sauce is centre stage - no pasta drowning in a flood of sauce - but perfectly judged flavour combinations designed to let the pasta shine. A complementary parmesan crust scattered with mushroom dust set the scene for what turned out to be a wonderful experience. Then we began with one of the best dishes we have had this year - stracciatella di burrata with nectarine. The creamy, milky, silky, slightly salty cheese oozing and slithering across the plate, topped with crunchy sweet chopped nectarine, a splash of chardonnay vinegar, a slurp of lemon oil, and a scatter of aromatic, peppery basil leaves. The flavour and textural combination was marvellous. Creaminess, sweet crunch, subtle grapiness, zesty citrus zip and the headiness of the basil. Not to be missed. Well, that was a fantastic beginning, so on to the pasta. Tagliatelle della delizia - slippery, glossy pasta strands, cooked to al dente perfection, twirled and swirled and heaped on the plate, with a rich, meaty, luxurious ragu of pork, veal, vegetables and red wine - ticked every box you could want. Beautiful. And then ricotta gnocchi, shining like a silken tofu, sat in a puddle of blue swimmer crab, tomato, chilli and basil sugo - bursting with fresh flavours, salty sweet crab meat, zip from the chilli and sharp/sweet tones of the tomato pimped and perked by the basil. And on the tables here a shaker of chilli available if more of a zip is required. With our meal we enjoyed a bottle of rosรฉ from one of the aforementioned new wave producers, and one of the best, Berry Blossom from Unico Zelo - made from Nebbiolo from the Clare and Adelaide Hills - crushed rose petals and strawberry aromas, juicy fruit, a tad of mid palate sweetness, but long and crisp finish to round it out. Lulu La Delizia is a welcome addition to the Subiaco dining scene which has tailed off in recent years - with Lulu hopefully leading a renaissance. It has a buzzing, noisy, exuberant atmosphere, sensational pasta, brilliant sauces, cleverly and creatively designed dishes, wonderful waiters, spot on wine list. You gotta go.
Be the first to ReplyLulu La Delizia was the first restaurant we enjoyed as part
Lulu La Delizia was the first restaurant we enjoyed as part of my month long birthday celebration (tee hee!). We had been waiting for the osteria to open, especially because we missed all the delicious pasta dishes that Chef Valvasori did at Lalla Rookh. The restaurant was quite small and the lace curtains on the windows made us feel homey. We were seated at the round table for two, I think it was the only round one seeing the rest were all rectangular. There were some seats available in front of the windows which the restaurant used to seat some walk-in customers. I ordered a serving of smoked garganelli, minced pork salsiccia, broccoli, chili, garlic and white wine. The combination of all ingredients made this dish savoury, light and fresh at the same time. Each bite had a punch of deliciousness running through my mouth. Hubby ordered the special pasta of the day which was the gnocchi with heaps of blue swimmer crab. He really loved his dish especially because his gnocchi was soft but not overly soft. The flavour was tasty but enough that it didn't make him sick of it by the end of the dish. Portions were exactly the right amount, not too much and not too little. We finished off the night with a slice of beautiful tiramisu made with espresso corretto. It was so easy to eat, had a great coffee flavour and I really love how each ingredient seemed to be really balanced. PS: The tiramisu didn't come with the scrabble tiles, those were mine ;-) More customers poured into the restaurant by the time we finished our dinner at 7:30 PM. It was really good to see and we believed Lulu La Delizia will find a lot of loyal customers in no time. I love the simple menu that Lulu La Delizia offered, not only it made it easier to choose but at the end of the night they also proven that less is more ;-).
