Great concept and great service, food falls flat
Service is great, unfortunately the food is not. This place bills itself as Japanese yakitori joint with a French twist, and also a French bistro with Japanese twists. Unfortunately the few available yakitori does not have that charcoal-y flavors you would expect, and you can't really taste any of the flavor twists in any of the food (shisho in escargot, wasabi in rillette, nicoise in octopus, even the orange in duck l'orange, were all non-existent). When there were flavors, it was a one note domination (extreme tartness in the tongue sando, or salt in the pot de creme).
It also doesn't help that portions are tiny, and really expensive for a neighborhood spot with really blah food. You will also be sitting real close to the tables around you, which is a bit iffy these days.
Don't waste your money
New spot, with some inbuilt gravitas because it is run by the people behind Brooklyn's beloved Olmsted. But don't be fooled by these glowing reviews, the plates are not small they are tiny and expensive and service sucks. AVOID.

All small plates & skewers. Skewers are two bites worth. Flavors are intense. We shared everything & ordered what seemed like most of the menu. Lamb, beef tongue, escargot, lobster, ribeye, mussels, potato puffs, string beans, pickled legumes, artichoke custard, bread - everything was delicious. Each had distinct flavor. Highly recommended. Most of the tables are high tops with stools with no backs. Can get a bit tiring on the back after a while.

As the name suggests, this intriguing, and already highly popular spot, provides hybrid dishes from French/European and Japanese ingredients and styles. Combining that with a small plates presentation, super-friendly service, and surprising low prices (nothing on the menu, including drinks, is priced higher than $9), it's no wonder that Maison Yaki will likely continue to excel in much the same vein as its sister restaurant across the street, Olmsted.
I have one small complaint. All portions, including the drinks, are on the small side. The photos on the restaurant's website typically show what are actually double orders of the various dishes. That's misleading, although likely unintentionally so on their part. But ultimately, you get what you pay for, and this is still quite a bargain for a gourmet quality meal.
My wife and I especially enjoyed the Cauliflower Okinomiyake and Hazlelnut, Pommes Dauphine, and Scallops and Sauce Maltaise. I also highly recommend getting an order, or two, of the Baguette with Yukuosho Butter to help savor every last bit of the various delicious sauces.
Flavorful Bites at a Great Price
What they do, they do it right..! Fantastic, Creative and Flavorfull Yakitori version of classic such as duck a la orange, rib eye w. bordalaise, tuna nicoise, tempura frog legs, lobster w. americana.
Great service and the price for quality its amazing. Cant wait to visit again.
A Wonderful New Spot
We absolutely loved Maison Yaki. Be sure to make a reservation because this is a new and very popular spot.
Everything here is tapas style, so be prepared to order a bunch of things to make a full meal.
The atmosphere here is charming, old school and intimate, without feeling overcrowded. There is also an outdoor seating area. This is the perfect spot for dinner or just grabbing a drink and appetizers.
Service was friendly and quick and our waiter was really helpful with questions and food allergies. Many of the menu items were able to be altered to be gluten free and gluten free crackers as well as bread were available to be swapped into some dishes.
The drink menu includes beer, wine and cocktails. The Ginger French 75 was lovely.
We tried many skewers and apps-overall here are my top recommendations from what we ate:
1-Duck Rillettes & Wasabi-I would come back here just for this alone. One of the most delicious things iโve eaten in some time. This came with toast and a foamy delightful top. Donโt miss this dish.
2-Pork Belly Dijonaise- This was my favorite skewer. Perfectly cooked with just the right balance of crispy pork belly goodness.
3-Escargot in Shiso Butter-This put other escargot I have had to shame. The shiso butter is beyond amazing. Youโll want to drink it.
4-Carrots & Parsley-(this is a side)-These carrots were another incredible dish. Served over another savory sauce that is so good youโll want to drink it.
5-Salmon Mimosa Tartare-A wonderful Summery dish which comes deconstructed to be mixed up. Light, refreshing, tasty and memorable.
6-Lamb Leg & Herbes de Provence-Another scrumptious skewer. Wonderfully crispy on the outside and rare on the inside.
My least favorites were the scallops and king trumpet mushrooms-they were still very good but just a bit lacking the impressive flavors of some not the others. My husband had the lobster and duck, which I didnโt try-but he said they were outstanding.
Be sure to check out this gem!
A Very Delicious New Neighborhood Spot from Creators of Olmsted
My husband and I just dropped by Maison Yaki before a BAM performance last night. This is a cute, comfortable, casual neighborhood spot serving some truly delicious food for reasonable prices!
It's small, and in keeping with wanting it to be a neighborhood spot where folks can drop in, a portion of the tables and the bar are for walk-ins. Menu items, including cocktails, are purposely priced below $10 each.
Menu items consist of small cold plates, small warm plates, and a number of yakitori-like sticks featuring vegetables (trumpet mushroom, leeks, and asparagus were on the menu last night), poultry (wings, chicken breast and duck), meats (lamb, beef, and pork belly), and seafood (scallops, lobster, and a fish). Each consists of around 2 oz of protein/veg, served with a most-delicious french-based sauce made specifically for each item.
Dishes consistently surprised us in a most pleasant way; some are a fresh take on classics - duck a l'orange skewers consisted of a ground duck patty with the lightest, yummiest sauce with just a hint of orange, instead of the cloyingly sweet orange sauce that one imagines for a menu item of this name.
Our server was very friendly and advised us very well. We particularly enjoyed the salmon mimosa tartare, the duck rillettes, and for the sticks - the asparugus, duck, pork belly, and scallops were our favorites. We couldn't stop ordering more to try the various offerings. In the end we ordered two small cold plates, one small warm plate, 3 vegetable skewers, and 4 skewers with animal protein. For dessert the profiteroles with ginger and matcha were pretty amazing! The total bill, with a generous tip, 3 glasses of wine and two cocktails was just over $150!
Can hardly wait to return! This spot is a real gem!
