Unique dining experience.
Very unique experience.
Food and drinks were excellent. Ambience was like a hipster coffee shop mixed with a thrift store.
Service was eclectic as we ordered via our phones and it was a bit hard to get attention otherwise.
Portions larger than anticipated.
Great food, trendy spot
We enjoyed excellent food - good dumplings and buns, delicious fried chicken and vegetables dishes. Staff are friendly and ambiance is relaxed, albeit a bit noisy. Our waiter apologized for slow service which he attributed to larger than usual crowds because of Restaurant Week.
Be the first to ReplySmall trendy place with limited menu but tasty food
Maketto is one of these places a friend of mine has described as being "too trendy". It's fast casual in a boxy 2 story industrial space. The ground floor has a few tables and a store selling t-shirts etc, second floor is the main dining room with a small bar, rows of white two tops and a counter facing the front window and overlooking parts of the lower floor. Decor is minimalist, mostly white with grey floors. On this late afternoon, the upper room is about a quarter full with just about everyone busy on their laptops and not really eating or drinking anything. It felt more like a work space than a dining room (what with outlets all over). You order at the counter and food will be brought to you when ready. We had the beef and basil chicken bowls and both were sufficiently spiced and very good. Only thing with the basil chicken is there was an abundance of sauce completely drowning the rice underneath. Would be better if the chicken and rice could be separate so that you could mix to taste. The portions were quite big, so I ended up taking half home and had the leftover for dinner (speaking of good value!). Trendy or not, this is a very reasonable place for a quick bite and obviously a peasant environment to just hang out get work done.

We tried four dishes, based on reviews online--Pork Steamed Bao buns, Crystal Shrimp Dumplings, Eggplant dip, and Spicy Lamb Noodles. We found everything surprisingly bland.

Really small space (even when including the outdoor seating) but the food is amazing. Love the friend chicken and all of the dishes we tried were a good blend of Taiwanese, Thai, Cambodian, and American flavors.

Had a decent time at Maketto. The food was ok except for the amazing spring rolls! I wouldn’t go back though because we saw what we thought was a rat scurry across the restaurant. The waitress tried to convince us that it was a mouse which I’m not sure is any better. Any way we hightailed it out of there real quick. Didn’t even get an apology from management or anything. Clearly its pretty normal for there to be small animals around based on their reaction.

Place is alright. Food was somewhat suspect. I mean it was affordable but none of what I tried came close to being what I expected. Call it too much fusion-creep I guess. Service was excellent. But I think I disappointed my guest.
Be the first to ReplyVery enjoyable.
Very good meal at this Thai-Taiwanese fusion place. Creative takes on familiar dishes. Especially liked the cauliflower laap, bao, spicy lamb noodles, and, for dessert, banana fosters sticky rice.
Be the first to ReplyWorth The Hype!
After being on our bucket list for quite awhile, we finally had dinner at Maketto last night and it did not disappoint. The menu was different from the one we had reviewed online so we asked our waiter for some input on our choices. He was very personable and extremely helpful. while explaining that the dishes are meant to be shared and come as they are ready from the kitchen. He also helped us with how much food to order. I was concerned that all of the food would come at one time but the three dishes came out one at a time at a nice pace so as not to rush or overwhelm us. We started with the cauliflower that was a symphony of flavors and textures. The Strange Flavor Eggplant may have a weird name but it was delicious and the toasts on the side were great for dipping. The fried chicken lived up to the hype of the reviews online. We left very content, anxious to return, and too full to consider dessert.

First of, this place has an identity crisis...is it a coffee bar, t-shirt/sneaker shop, or a restaurant??? The clothing store on the first floor is a total waste of floor space where more dining tables can be placed. Now the food....heard a ton about this place and the reviews appear to suggest great food. However, I was underwhelmed. Service was extremely slow, pricing was high considering you were served on cheap Chinese take out plates...the fired chicken was too sweet and over fried, the fish had way too much fish sauce and was overpowering the fish itself. Overall, this is a gimmicky place that attracts young trendy kids of DC...not really true foodies. I found the food having very little Taiwanese influence.....
