Margaret Double Bay Reviews from The Last Year
Up to expectations
Great Restaurant, good casual atmosphere, food was good, as expected, service exceptional, plenty of staff to look after you. Good size menu. We both had fish dishes which were wood fire cooked. Decent serve but need to order sides. We had Wentworth potatoes and peas with anchovies (tasted much better than it sounds). Both were good size servings, would order both again. Good wine list but limited by glass list which was a bit pricey. Noticed a number of other diners were sharing mains and Entrees. We had a main each, bread, two side dishes, 1 glass of Champagne, 1 glass of wine and a coffee each which came to around $240 . Well worth the cost. Will go again.
Lunch at DB
The service was exemplary starting with being shown to our table and the attentive wait staff. We shared tuna tartare, potato rosti with salmon roe and chargrilled zucchini. For mains we shared the roast chicken with eggplant puree with chargrilled corn and bell peppers. It was probably a little too much but it was so delicious we kept eating. However next time we will leave room for dessert.
Book a table, it’s worth the wait.
Lucky to get a table here. This is my new favourite Sydney restaurant! Very good vibe buzzing with conversation. The food is outstanding. Seafood and fish in abundance. A great selection of raw and cooked entrees and wood grilled mains , steaks and other non piscine options available for the meat eaters. We three shared dishes off pipis, prawns, Thai sausages and ceviche of gold spot trevally. Main course: grilled King George whiting with sides of slow cooked peas and crisp and creamy potatoes. Very smart fish and chips. Some great desserts on offer, my wife chose a crème caramel, not quite the right texture (perhaps some cornflour added). This was the only negative in an otherwise exceptionally good meal.
Honesty is essential
Given the widespread prevalence of food allergies, it’s essential that diners can be certain that the waiter will give honest answers to their questions. I have no allergies, but I do enjoy cutting into a thick, juicy steak. Accordingly, when ordering, I asked the waiter: “Does the steak come sliced?” The answer I received was a firm “No.” When my steak arrived, I pointed out to the waiter that it had been sliced. Clearly, the answer to my question should’ve been, “Yes, the steak comes sliced, but I’ll ask the chef not to slice yours.” The sliced steak was duly replaced, with apologies. But that isn’t the issue. Unless waiters give scrupulously honest answers to diners' questions, it’s only a matter of time before a diner has a dangerous allergic reaction.
Upgraded
All I can say is they improved so much and we enjoyed greatly with their new menu. Neil Perry got his mojo back, the food is delicious and the flavor is well balanced. The only downside, actually for most of restaurants in Sydney is a bit noisy.
A special dining experience
This is an exceptional family run restaurant, and right up there with the very best in Sydney. The staff are incredible, always happy, friendly and accommodating, the food is superb, and it just has a lovely relaxed and classy atmosphere. Importantly the wine list is great for those that really appreciate a cellar with great variety and depth. Top marks from us, we have been a number of times and its always a special treat, congratulations to Neil and Samantha and family.
Does not live up to expectations
Work needs to be done on size of the desserts and the plating. Very non inspirational particularly for a hatted restaurant. Would fail Masterchef.
Delicious food
We had a birthday voucher and went for lunch. Entrees albacore tuna and burrata with extras were excellent as werethe prawns and squid. Restaurant was full approx 80-100 people and we counted 30 staff. Will be back
Top Notch!
This is a great place to eat. The service was friendly and top notch - and the food was so delicious. They chatted with us and got to know us through the night.
The entire experience was first class.
My wife and I both looked forward to the venue in view of its recent award. We found the food and service was perfect and not overbearing. The time between servings perfect. My only comment would be I liked my steak Tartare (entree) a little spicier, but I enjoyed it all the same. My wife had the Albacore entree and Beef filet (Bleu). I had the Coral trout as my main. All were served exactly as we desired. Our sweet service being a crumble and a trifle were delicious. Wine selection by the glass was available to match the food courses. The food quantity was adequate - quality is paramount with an adequate serve when three courses are desired. That’s what we got. It was crowded but the noise level was acceptable - we could talk across the table. We spent just over two hours enjoying our meal and at no time were we rushed. Neil Perry was seen organising the open kitchen and he was anything but a Gordon Ramsay. A fine group producing fine food. Is it the best restaurant in Australia ? It’s exceptionally good but there are others that can equal the food - maybe the ambience and service get ‘Margaret’ over the line. We have eaten around the world and Margaret is certainly at the top end. Thank you for an enjoyable experience and the cup cake recognising MY Margaret’s birthday.

I have some reservations coming up tomorrow that have gotten lots of views but haven’t sold yet. I haven’t made a sale yet since I just joined this week. I keep lowering the price, but am worried they won’t sell. How long did it take you to sell your first reservations? And did you have success being reimbursed by AT for no-show or cancellation fees? Just looking for a little reassurance. Thanks!

You should probably cancel prior to the cancellation date per the cancellation policy. I would imagine you would only get reimbursed for a sold listing if you happen to be charged?

My first sale took about a week. But as the other commenter said stay ontop of your cancellation windows. There’s no reimbursement for those so make sure you cancel in time then just try again.
