Matsuhisa Beverly Hills Reviews from The Last Year
Wasn't as good as Nobu- but same price.
They also didn't have liquor. Pretty disappointed.
Amazing food, vibe, service.
Beautiful ambiance, fresh sea food. A true artistic masterpiece for every dish

If you can afford to eat here, you need to come enjoy the excellent sushi and cooked dishes here. An unassuming restaurant considering it's Beverly Hills, with fast (though brusque) service and a very diverse menu. The elevated Japanese food you would get at Nobu (same owner) but in a much less pretentious space. Every bite was super high quality from the perfectly crisped crispy rice and spicy tuna (best version of this dish I've ever had), the baked crab hand roll (ugly presentation but very tasty), nicely grilled A5 wagyu (get it with NO SAUCE, the miso did not work and I am so glad I asked for it on the side even if the server was skeptical, lol), yummy black miso cod, buttery uni donburi ($$$$$), and rock shrimp tempura that was a big hit. I would recommend skipping the tempura as it is no better than your neighborhood Japanese spot and there are more fun things to try on the menu. The oysters are also a skip.

STAY AWAY! I called a last minute reservation here for a Saturday night at 8 pm. The manager, Ron, picked up and said he has us booked with a table. We arrived at the restaurant at 8 pm and were bombarded with customers and terrible service. The host at the front informed us that no reservation was made, and they informed us of a 1.5 hour wait to be seated. My Saturday night was ruined due to the poor service and information provided by Ron.
Nobu dishes and quality with a more lowkey ambiance.
Photos are from takeout but have enjoyed going in-person as well a couple times and it never disappoints ! I enjoy sitting at the sushi bar. It's casual. The food is excellent and consistent, always fresh. Takeout order: 2 squid pasta, 1 yellowtail scallion roll, 1 tuna asparagus roll, and 1 daily special roll :-)
The original NOBU restaurant.
What an incredible place. EXTREMELY PRICY but the food is very flavorful. My wife who I love more than anyone except my 2 sons G-D bless them, loves this place but oddly not for the sushi. My wife doesn't even like sushi I think the price for food is outrageously expensive but these are the things that are incredible. Artichoke salad incredible Spinach salad(same as artichoke but just with spinach) Spicy tuna crispy rice is great but make sure they put the tuna on the rice. Spicy miso soup is good. It's salt water with tofu and seaweed. The eggplant miso is very under rated. We get the corn tempura and my wife being picky, was very skeptical about this one but it was AMAZING. so we get 2 of these so we don't have to share. The beef tepanyaki on a mushroom medley is amazing as well. If your server is a tall Asian woman, you are lucky. She's great but the only problem with this place is sometimes they might rush you to get out so they can have a faster turn over. I think that the service is quicker because people like being served quicker so I'm not opposed to quicker service. I actually prefer it because I can eat and get out asap The restaurant inside is actually a very nice authentic feel to a sushi restaurant. It's a little cramped in there which makes it all the more fun. I truly enjoyed this place and will continue to go back even though it cost one of my paychecks of 2 weeks of work. Thank you
Stepping into Matsuhisa, the hype and ambiance whispered
Stepping into Matsuhisa, the hype and ambiance whispered promises of an extraordinary sushi experience. Unfortunately, those promises fell short of reality. While the staff was friendly and attentive, the food itself proved underwhelming. The sushi lacked the delicate precision and freshness I expect at this price point. Some pieces were overly chewy, others oddly bland. Even the signature dishes didn't quite live up to their reputation, feeling more ordinary than innovative. The overall experience felt somewhat disjointed. While elements were individually fine, they didn't coalesce into a harmonious dining experience. The high price tag only amplified the disappointment. Matsuhisa Beverly Hills holds an undeniable reputation, but in my case, it failed to deliver on its culinary promises. Perhaps it was an off night, but ultimately, the experience fell short of the expectations set by both price and prestige.

Was expecting a lot for the prices here but the corn kakiage left much to be desired and the baked crab handrolls were not as good as Katsuya's.
30 min late for our reservation.
Guy at front desk was unabashedly unapologetic. Food was average. Toro sushi which was expensive fell apart before it was touched. See picture. Aisles were way too narrow and people kept bumping into our table. Way too overpriced for average sushi. Our bill was $250+ without any alcohol. We skipped dessert because we couldn't stand the place for another minute.

Why was this place so packed for a Thursday night ? Maybe
Why was this place so packed for a Thursday night ? Maybe because this is the OG spot or Nobu and what created the Nobu brand and culinary powerhouse. This is the first original Nobu restaurant and the taste and flavors of the food prove it right. I always love sitting at the sushi bar when going out for sushi but they have both an inside and outdoors seating. I started off with the red snapper and the chef was quick to remind me "no sauce" cause it would just kill the delicious butter taste of salt and snapper mixed into one melting in your mouth. I followed that up with an uni shooter and half shell of oysters. Delicious. I continued with some rice crispy tuna twist, where they serve the rice on a stick and give you the side of tuna to put on top yourself. I finished that off with a seared tuna sushi and a crab hand roll. I washed all of this down with the matsuhisa martini which I was not a fan of, but hey, when in Rome. Gotta try the new stuff when you can. All of it was delicious! This place clearly has a lot of regulars, obviously based on how busy they were and the chefs familiarity with their guests. It's a must try and you can't go wrong with any of the food they have on their extensive (and I mean extensive) diverse menu.
Big disappointment after high expectations. Wouldn't recommend.
We booked this months ago, knowing the history of the restaurant and having eaten in a few Nobus and many other Japanese restaurants before so we were expecting something great and memorable! We were very surprised and, whilst it may sound harsh, underwhelmed and disappointed. We were seated outside, under a canopy/tent, in the extension of the restaurant. I stress 'outside', with only two heaters for about 20 tables. It was freezing! We were very cold and the staff kindly moved us to a table closer to a heater, but it was still cold. The 'decor' in the tent was almost non-existent and to say the least we felt overdressed. The atmosphere was good, with lots of other diners. Staff were friendly, polite and helpful. Food-wise: the chicken udon broth was delicious; the king crab fried rice was virtually tasteless and 50$?!; both the salmon teriyaki and black cod were tasty but all fish was overcooked, and thankfully the sushi was good, but not special. Overall... I appreciate the significance of the place and its history, but the food didn't taste amazing, wasn't special, was over-priced, and the whole set-up/dining environment was... uncomfortable! I feel it was a disservice to Chef Nobu's talent and reputation!
