Unfortunately, it's nowhere near what it promises and deserves! We had already reserved a table for 4 people several weeks ago to celebrate our son's birthday in comfort. We didn't want a party or any special treatment, we just ordered a small chocolate cake. That was it! Of course, we had previously looked at the menu online on the Matsuhisa homepage and were looking forward to it. The first thing we had to do after arriving was to scan the menu as a QR code, as was the case during the Corona period, which was a bit disturbing in a restaurant of this class and after such a long time after Corona, but not a disadvantage. We immediately noticed that some of the chairs had worn backs and some of the tables were scratched. There were no tables set, at least our table didn't have a tablecloth. Not a bad thing either. We also noticed that the scanned menu didn't have some dishes, especially from the starter, which we could see online. The tacos and mini Wagyu burgers, etc. were missing. When we politely asked our very cool and distant waiter, he simply replied that this was a Japanese restaurant. Of course, he forgot that Matsuhisa is dedicated to Japanese-Peruvian cuisine. So there were no starters for our two children, who just don't like fish. When we asked if there was an alternative starter, the answer was again that this was a Japanese restaurant. We finally understood! Fabio, our waiter, was also not very talkative, which could be due to his lack of German, but we could have spoken English if he had asked! So we started ordering a few starters that we liked: shrimp, tempura, edamame spicy and crispy rice with tuna. Since we were already there at 7:20 p.m. and the children didn't have any starters either, we ordered the main courses straight away. When I wanted to order beef fillet skewers, our waiter said that they were small portions. So, problem solved and we ordered 2x beef fillet skewers (30 €/portion) as a starter for the kids. Then 3x beef fillet and a portion of chicken as a main course. When we asked for side dishes and asked for side dishes to fill us up, our waiter repeated again, this time in a more derogatory way, that this was a Japanese restaurant. OK, got it! Suddenly it occurred to him that they had a raw spinach salad that you could eat as a side dish, and we were immediately happy that there was any positive recommendation at all and ordered it. The drinks arrived one by one over the next 15 minutes. That's when we noticed that there was no coordination in the serving. First, of course, water was served, which our waiter had right there at the service counter. Then the other drinks, such as wine, cocktails and soft drinks (wrong twice!) really arrived at 5 minute intervals. By then the first soft drinks (0.2 l Coke) had of course already been drunk. The starters were brought in the same way, but at 10-minute intervals. First prawn tempura, then crispy rice and finally, after 20 minutes, the beef fillet skewers. Edamame was not brought at all. When we pointed out the missing edamame to the waiter, he said we hadn't ordered it. So we ordered again and finally 5 minutes later the edamame arrived. The highlight was the main courses, they tasted very good and the portions were sufficient. The chicken was very good and tasted juicy and tender and the sliced beef fillet was good in portion and tasted good. There were various sauces to choose from and they were good too. HOWEVER: first only the chicken dish was brought! Without any indication that the rest was coming. A little embarrassed, we didn't know what would happen next, would the rest come or not! We waited about 10 minutes and then asked the waiter whether the rest was coming too. Of course we wanted to eat together and not each of us on our own. Again the waiter took the liberty of telling me with a disparaging smile that this was a Japanese restaurant. I told him that I had been to Japan, Tokyo, before and that I took his constant references to "Japanese" restaurants as an insult. I asked if he had ever been to Japan, which he did not understand. We called the restaurant manager and he apologized, saying that they had a full house today, which is no excuse for us. So we returned the chicken and 20 minutes later, at around 9:10 p.m., we finally received the main courses together. When we then went to collect the cake we had ordered for dessert and had even confirmed in the afternoon when we called, a chocolate mousse in the shape of a ring, the size of a palm, with a Happy Birthday chocolate border suddenly appeared. For 4 people!!!!!! We are completely disappointed and cannot recommend this restaurant at all. It is not enough to just be in the Mandarin Oriental hotel and think that all guests put up with this and walk past it unscathed. As in previous years, this restaurant never lasted long. It constantly changed its motto and direction due to a lack of good management. Unfortunately, one star too many!
