Pleasant exception with a few too many waits
Branch of the two-starred Steirerei, it offers Heinz Reitbauer designer cuisine at affordable prices in the restful garden of the Stadtpark. The menu has few dishes but it is a pleasant escape from the tiring Austrian routine of cutlets and boiled meats. The fabulous assortment of cheeses is worth mentioning, although it requires a long wait to prepare them (we waited more than half an hour). But the service is still kind. About 45 per head without drinks.

My girlfriend and I were looking forward to a leisurely morning at the Meierei. Unfortunately, the coffee was sour, the service was "okay", the sourdough bread was not baked through and much too sour (inedible). The warm cheese bread was good, the fish tartare OK. And all of that for €40! What a pity!

Unfortunately a free table was occupied! When I questioned this, the waiter said it was my problem. I find that inappropriate and cheeky. The waiter called after me - I was cheeky. That may be true, but is that a way to interact in front of the guests who just had a table??? Not good advertising for the noble dairy

Dear Mrs Reitbauer, yesterday we spontaneously walked into the Meierei for breakfast, we hadn't made a reservation, the young waiter was great and immediately prepared an uncovered table for us, and off we went with one of the best coffees in the city and a wonderful bacon & eggs, it was nice to be in this wonderful location again, and a big thank you to the wonderful team

I found the quality and presentation of the food to be very good. The price/performance ratio is top notch. The atmosphere was pleasant. Tap water costs EUR 4.50. I think that's OK. The service was friendly but not always there. No salt or pastries with the food, water was not refilled and no other drinks were offered. When the black tea was served I didn't know how long it had been brewing. All small things that are easy to fix.
Be the first to ReplyWell - once upon a time!
"Pheasant haxle with fried onions, chervil and braised pointed cabbage" is what the menu says. I think that's pretty clear. A haxle is a haxle, and we know that there isn't much meat on a pheasant. But what you get are three small cabbage rolls - no braised cabbage, just briefly scalded, so indigestible - filled with pearl wheat and minimal traces of tasteless meat. And a sour sauce that drowns out the last bit of taste. Neither the dish nor the description on the menu fits here.
Be the first to ReplyFriendly service in a nice ambience and with a good breakfast
When we're in Vienna, we love going to the Meierei for breakfast: we really like the lavish combinations of the selectable ingredients and the nice presentation with the tiered stands. Of course, you should definitely try some of the numerous types of cheese. Reserving a table was always easy and the service was impeccable. We're already looking forward to the next time.
Be the first to ReplyVery nice restaurant with unfortunately often very unpleasant guests
Oh, how much people complain about the Meierei - but we found a very well-kept and wonderful restaurant in every respect. Attentive service, the breakfast ingredients very fresh and tasty, the price reasonable. However, the standard of many visitors seems to have suffered badly. They brought dogs, celebrated and were loud and disruptive. What a pity. The Meierei deserves better guests.
Be the first to ReplyDon't go
We went there with expectations after having been to the two-star restaurant owned by the same management, which we really liked. Instead, big disappointment. Normal dishes, cutlet without infamy and without praise. Terrible service both at the reception and at the table. Bad location, also because you enter where the bathrooms are. In short, don't go.
Be the first to ReplyUnacceptable wait!
The restaurant is beautiful in a very nice position in the park. The staff is very kind. BUT: we all ordered the same signature dish, goulash. My mother order the lighter portion so that she’d have room for dessert. We waited exactly one whole hour to be served. And only three of us were served. After 15 minutes, my mother’s smaller dish (in size exactly the same as ours?…) arrived. It was delicious. Ordered our dessert but kitchen was closed. We were seated at 8:30 pm. An hour and a half earlier than kitchen closure. So left restaurant, hungry and very unsatisfied. A real pity, not advisable experience!
Be the first to ReplyFood and ambiance ok, service mediocre
First the positive: the food was good and the ambiance is decent. What really spoiled the experience was the inattentive and rude service. I had better service at a fast food joint. At the end I told the waiter to round up the check to 157 Euros (adding 10 Euros tip) and he put in 175 Euros at the terminal. Luckily I noticed it and he blamed it not hearing me correctly. Left a bad taste. Will definitely not return.
Be the first to ReplyA bit Pretentious
Overall, I didn't like the taste of my food much. Combining unusual items seemingly at random (aubergine with chanterelle mushrooms and nectarine/ quinoa salad with melon/ chick peas with pickles) don't yet constitute modern cuisine. The stuffing of the quail was too massive both in texture and quantity; it turned the quail into the size of a pigeon. Apparently the beef tartar, the deer and the 2 fish dishes which my colleagues chose were more satisfying.
Be the first to ReplyA bit of a disappointment for a Michelin-affiliated bistro
We were visited by a two Michelin-star chef from out-of-town who had heard positive reviews in his circles re: the Wiener Schnitzel here. Much to our disappointment, the Wiener Schnitzel did not impress any of us (at this point, we've already had many others in Vienna to compare). Actually, neither did any of the other dishes and starters we tried (very mayo-heavy which entirelly covered up a lot of the otherwise potentially-interesting flavours). The service was great, as you'd expect, and so were the views from the Bistro overlooking the Stadpark. However, the food itself was nothing spectacular in our experience. The atmosphere was also nothing to write home about. Overall a fine place, but not worth its price and renoma in our view.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing, Slipping
We have been to the Meierei quite a few times—basically, whenever we have come to Vienna, we have gone there. For a long time, I would have said that Vienna's best schnitzel can be got there.
I am not sure I would still say that. In recent weeks, I have been there twice. The first time, the schnitzel was so-so. The pieces were not uniformly thin, and one of the schnitzels was watery. The second time was better, but the variability left me worried.
The potatoe salad is still fine, but I found if disappointing to see the traditional lamb's lettuce replaced with just regular lettuce. This looks like a cost saving measure.
During one of my visits, we ended up waiting almost an hour for dessert—allegedly the kitchen was too busy (I guess with food for the Steirereck restaurant, which is done in the same kitchen if I am not wrong). Even though we received a free serving of assorted ice cream to compensate us for the wait, this is not acceptable. We eventually threw in the towel and left without dessert. I cannot recall anything of this sort in any restaurant, ever.
