The concluding dinner of my three-night business trip to Parker Palm Springs was at Mister Parker's, which was (and still is) closed to the public until later this year. They opened the restaurant to us for our private event. The decor is interesting. As I said in my review of the resort itself, everything has a mid-century bent with a bordering-on-tacky eccentricity. The art in Mister Parker's is kind of cool, with pop art, pinups, and more covering nearly every inch of open wall space. The mirrored ceilings reflect the dark furniture, carpeting, and dim lighting to create a warm ambiance. This was definitely a cocktail dress and jacket and tie sort of place. We weren't told what we would be eating before dinner, so the entire meal was a surprise (this also means I can't tell you exactly what I had and will have to describe it in detail). The appetizer was a savory tart with a base of some sort of cheese (possibly goat), topped with frisée, tomatoes, and balsamic vinegar. The crust was buttery and flakey, and overall it was a success, though the amount of cheese was almost a bit overwhelming due to its thick texture. The main course was an extremely tender, boneless hunk of beef. I'm tempted to just call it elevated pot roast, because that's pretty much what it was. A big chunk of beef in the middle of the plate on top of a sauce, smothered in gravy, served with root vegetables. While the meat was cooked perfectly and really good, it was also somewhat of a bland dish that really would've benefitted from a starch, like mashed potatoes. Just serving a chunk of meat and a handful of vegetables isn't very interesting.Dessert was way too sweet. It was a cake with an ice cream shell, shaped like a candy bar. Chocolate on chocolate. It was just overwhelming in its sweetness and I couldn't get beyond one bite. This was really disappointing because I'm a huge dessert person and love sweets, but even I have my limits. The waiters and waitresses were kind of sullen, silently gliding in to bring food and then disappearing, never saying a word. Never came back around except to clear plates when it was time to bring out the next course. Since it was a private event, the staff were operating a little differently than if we were dining during normal service, but it was kind of bizarre and felt almost like the restaurant told them they needed to blend into the background and couldn't dare bring attention to themselves.Overall, just an ok meal. Nothing very memorable, unique, or anything I'd be dying to go back to try.
