Come for the food, leave with an experience
OK, yes - this is a celebrity chef restaurant (whether Pier 17 or East Village). If you read the menu and the prices before going, you might think you're going to leave broke and hungry, but it could not be more the opposite. In the Pier 17 Momofuku location upstairs, the tables are equipped with grills and the very friendly and knowledgable staff will grill and serve but don't expect a Benihana show - the servers could all probably open and run their own restaurants. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming from the minute you walk inside, and the food will be some of the best dishes you might have ever tried. Just a tip from this reviewer: we went with a group of seven and found ordering a la carte gave us all the chance to try out a lot of items on the menu rather than a prix fixe for everyone at the table. Either way, you will get a great dining experience but don't necessary rule anything out on the menu.

Was excited to try out David Chiang’s ssam bar. We were comfortably seated at the patio with heating on a cold night. We ordered a nice variety of appetizers plus 2 mains to be shared amongst the 5 of us. All the appetizers were extremely delicious. Hamachi with avocado squash, raw oysters with kombu vinaigrette, roasted corn, mixed green salad, bao with pork belly, crispy fingerling potatoes and cacio e Pepe rice cakes with truffle. Our fav was the rice cakes which is a marriage between East n west. The bao was exceptionally good too. For mains we had the fish and pork shoulder. The appetizers were definitely better and there is simply too few selection of mains.
Be the first to ReplyJust another celebrity restaurant/bar
Decided to try a celebrity chef’s establishment as we happen to be at Pier 17. The ambience was nice and we chose to sit by the bar so that it’s quieter as it’s indoors while everyone chose to sit outdoors as the weather was nice. Service was great compared to most New York restaurants, maybe because the bar was owned by an Asian American. The menu was very limited at lunch so we only had the hamachi and pork belly buns with drinks. The drinks were innovative but have had better ones in Bali. Food was a little disappointing. Plating looks great but portions and flavors are a little lacking.
Be the first to ReplyTerrible Fried Fish Sandwich!
We were quite surprised to find that the lunch menu was quite small and there are not a lot of options for non-meat eaters. I ended up ordering the fish sandwich and the batter was so hard it was uneatable. The French fries were just average, I ended up having to return it. My partner got a fried chicken sandwich that was just OK. Unjustifiable high prices and not a lot of healthy choices. Overall a BIG disappointment. There are much better restaurants at Pier 17 if you are looking to dine on the water.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful space, excellent service, fantastic food
We enjoyed every aspect of our visit. The host who greeted us was friendly and genuine as were every other member of the staff we spoke to. They were well versed in anything I could eat on the menu (gluten free) and took a menu and marked it up to provide me excellent guidance on what I could order. The food is so well balanced. We had the off menu special which was a spicy pork rice cake. The “rice cakes” were like rice dumpling gnocchi and so soft and delicious. The spicy pork was quite spicy which we enjoyed - Spicy food is best when there is a balance of salt/sweet/heat and this was perfect. The crème brûlée had a sprinkle of salt which added to the flavours across the palate. The patio is great for people watching or enjoying the view of the water. A great place to eat before heading upstairs to the roof for concerts. We left very happy and satisfied.
Be the first to ReplyStay away..
First, the drinks were not good. Then the food.... fatty and slimy meat, so much meat. It was like eating at a Brazilian steakhouse but the quality was awful, especially the short ribs. Looks like the reviews for this place were good back in 2019. My guess is the quality has gone down a ton since COVID. The view was nice.
Be the first to ReplySummer Dinner Vibes
I came with my partner for anniversary. The food was as good as I remembered, the waitstaff all very knowledgeable about the menu, and all in all had a lovely meal. The meal was paced very well once the food started arriving on the table, the naan was a heavenly fluffy texture and the unique butter paired well with almost every dish. I wish the sides were more bite-size foods heavy instead of sauces, but you get quality meat for the prices and it's cooked to a delightful texture with lard by the staff over the grill. The only complaints I had were that the upstairs bathrooms are far too dimly lit, lending to a moody creepy abandoned house feeling that did not fit with the rest of the restaurant and that the AC was far too hot. The view is spectacular and the restaurant is a good fit with a younger crowd wanting to spend more time outside in the summer.

Every dish was totally unique and an original like nothing I’ve had before. Every serving was incredibly flavorful without being stuffy or pretentious. Fast paced and attentive staff despite being slammed
Be the first to ReplyReally great food but some points they need improvement
I booked as was there last week and need to remain at the patio with reduced menu. In any case it was wonderful. Had a shrimp toast and a cocktail, both delicious. Then I book again to ensure a table at the dinning room. Good receiving and ambience. Marvelous food!!! But…. No paper for hands in both bathrooms. Not enough light. When we ask for the second bottle Of same wine, the “sommelier “ open it and pour it on the remaining wine from the previous bottle without asking to taste first in a clean glass, as it is the protocol in Europe. This two errors caused my not full stars of the visit. You need to review procedures…
Be the first to ReplyA Wonderful Birthday Dinner
My friends surprised me with a birthday dinner here. The waitstaff was very helpful and knowledgeable about the menu, the food was good (but portions could be a bit large given how heavy some dishes were), and I would absolutely consider coming again. I loved the rice and red meat dishes, especially when paired with the sauces. My one complaint about the food is that the deconstructed cheesecake looked far too much like pasta, and as a result was a very confusing dish to eat. It wasn't a bad cheesecake, but I don't recommend it to those where presentation greatly impacts the taste experience.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious and fun
The food and wines were delicious. We found the staff to be knowledgeable, efficient and a lot of fun. Located on the water, the view added to the atmosphere.
Be the first to ReplyNice Restaurant, but
We had a good recommendation, so we had very high expectative. There were 2 great plates, but the rest was nothing to remember. The service was very good and the place is very nice.
Be the first to ReplyYummmmmmmyy , Fabulous foodie adventure.
The most unique, and delicious, food I tasted all year. Really unique fusion of Korean and American Southern comfort food.
Be the first to ReplyGreat pork buns
Had a meal here while visiting from London and very glad we booked. Cocktails and wine choice good, service v good and food excellent. Particularly the pork bao buns.
Be the first to ReplyPork. End of.
Go the pork. All of the pork. The buns, the steak...and the fish tartare was freaking awesome. Lovely staff. A little pricey but great.
Be the first to ReplyOh What a Duck!
It’s always a risk when you order duck. You can end up so disappointed but that is certainly not the case at Momofuku Ssäm Bar. We were celebrating a double birthday and decided to splurge on the rotisserie duck meal. Was a bit worried that it may not be enough for our party of 7 but we’re delightfully surprised with the generous serving. First the duck is presented and then brought back to the kitchen where it is expertly cut into perfect slices, served with rice, chive pancakes and garnished with cilantro & watercress. There is also crispy shallot, barbecue sauce and ginger scallion sauce that you can add to your duck and wrap it all up in a piece of bib lettuce. The perfectly cooked duck stuffed with sausage was tender and juicy. We were all happy including members of the party who rarely eat duck. It’s worth the $175 price tag.
